    Updates You While Driving

GPS owners ask for a lot these days, and I feel that the TomTom holds up to some important minimum requirements. My commute is on an interstate between Lincoln, NE and a nearby town (I-80). The highway's in my area can get pretty tricky. That's where the split screen popping up - showing which lane I need to be in - helps a bunch. The TomTom 1525 gives directions via adjustable volume voice unlike my old Garmin nuvi, and gives notice for upcoming tricky navigation steps on the route. Sometimes the GPS can give useful ahead of time directions: If there's two turns coming up in quick succession, you see not one but two turn arrows, showing that. That's great! However, the route progress indicator to the right (The "route bar" according to the manual), has route icons on the way to the destination that talk about where to find gas and lodging, and they need improvement. They overlap each other sometimes though where there are multiple features coming up, and become useless quickly. I want to instead be able to tap the map screen, and see a 2-D overview of the area I'm driving in. Can't do that with TomTom. Can do it with Garmin nuvi. This GPS works. I bought it from Best Buy in store for cheap, and it works. It's not the greatest it could be though - the driver features available while driving need to be more streamlined.

So I purchased this TomTom via 1525M 1 week ago. TomTom no longer would give me map updates for my XL340 with lifetime maps which worked perfectly. So after using this "new and improved" version driving through Louisiana and Texas in the last week, I discovered I did not like it. For one thing it is not accurate. Directions were sometimes off by 1/4 mile. Also, when you are coming up on interstate exchanges, it is not that clear which lane you are supposed to be in or which exit you are to take, and we are towing a travel trailer! I never had this problem with my trusty XL340. It had gotten us through 48 states with our travel trailer in the last 2 years since I retired. So after much investigation I took back the new TomTom and bought a Garmin Drive 52 and have not looked back. The Garmin Drive 52 gives you real time directions with street names. It is wonderful!!! It always shows your next exit or turn with mileage at the top of the screen. It is fantastic! And when you come up to your next exit, it goes to split screen and shows you which lane you should be in. It is idiot proof I tell you! And it has lifetime maps as well, even though it doesn't have LM on the box. I called Garmin to make sure. Goodbye TomTom, it was a great ride with the XL340.

I have had Tom toms before but not in a while. Decided to give them a try and I am really disappointed. This unit lags, interface is clumsy and slow. Bought it for my Miata and used the sticky pad on the dash and found the unit on the floor the next day. Moved it to my work vehicle and tried to get used to it but it's slow. You enter a letter and it takes two to three seconds for it to register. Has good sound but tries to send me down one way streets the wrong direction. The biggest gripe is I have to enter the city or zip code every time i want to input a destination. With all the small towns around here this is a hassle compounded by the lag it's really frustrating. By the time I get the address into the thing I could have driven there. Going back to Best Buy and exchange for a Garmin. This is why I love Best Buy!

Not as user friendly as some Garmin GPSs, but has free map updates. Not a GPS for those who like to find restaurants, etc. on trips - you need to put a lot more up front effort into the searches. This is really more of an item to use before you set out on a trip and can plan out exactly what you want to do, then input your route. It does not help you much once you get going. This is because it is harder to make changes to routes or to "look" around you for places like restaurants. It definitely sits in my glove box much more than my Garmin. But, this item has lifetime free map updates, which is important. Also, Garmin has absolutely horrible customer service related to their for purchase map updates. In spite of the inferiority of this product, I still prefer buying it over a Garmin.

    Great Gps, but lacks traffic

Hello, first I would like to start off by stating that this listing is INCORRECT. This Gps does NOT support traffic, nor will receive and traffic information. This gps only has lifetime maps but no traffic. The model that does have both lifetime maps and traffic is the 1525TM model. I very disappointed once I had found out that it did not have traffic. But, other than that this is a fantastic gps. It is very clear and the voice navigation is loud. The screen also doesn't stutter like other gps. Great GPS if you don't mind having traffic.

Description error on the 1525M. The 1525M includes Lifetime Maps of North America while its sister product the 1525TM includes Lifetime Traffic and Lifetime Maps of North America. This description showing this product has the traffic feature has been fixed. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused

Have to be very careful and put in ST, Rd, Blvd, or will send you to another town 30 miles away even if you input the correct city in the beginning. Doesn't have an easy to see CANCEL button. Looking for a store in point of interest usually comes up with nothing. I use it alot locally as well so luckily I know when its going in the wrong direction. Brought it back and am using old one until it dies then will buy a Garmin I guess. Go back to old program-much better!.

I purchased this GPS to replace my 1515 model that stopped working. So far I do not care for this unit. The older one was simple and straight forward. Whereas this one is more complicated and lags. It may take several seconds for the unit to respond and it can take even longer for the unit to provide a route. The unit also does not have some of the same views as the 1515 model. Personally, if I did not need a new unit so badly I would have returned this one for another.

All I need is a GPS to get from point A to B - I wasn't interested in additional features. This GPS does the job, with a few additional features that are helpful. It shows you how far it is the the next gas station on your route (which was helpful to me on a recent 5-hr trip), but I did notice that it missed a couple of gas stations that were closer. There aren't a lot of options, but it gets the job done. For the price, I'm super happy with this product.

Bought this to replace an old tom tom that was not being supported anymore with updates. Am I glad I got this, it's got great improvements from the old one and better maps. Only thing to claim that could be a problem is to make sure your route is the one you want before accepting it. Coming back from Chicago and it wanted us to go thru Canada, not along the US side - was the quickest route - needed the US side - but very happy with it.

Needed to upgrade my old TomTom which i bought in 2010, and what a wonderful buy. It is a little difficult with a different interface, so it takes a little usage to get used to. But its great with auto-updates on informing me about road issues. It is NOT for live traffic, but will get you to your destination by the fastest route. Screen is smaller which i was a little disappointed. Overall, very happy with the upgrade.

As someone before mentioned, dont be mislead by the fact that this says lifetime traffic as this does not have traffic at all. The map view is terrible and to boot I put in my work address in Tarzana ca, coming from Gardena an somehow it took me to la city college. I am returning this asap...Dont waste your time, gas , or money...

Had to get this for a trip to Florida across four states to get there and it worked flawlessly. It has a great easy to understand screen and notifies of traffic cams, gas stations, toll roads, speed limits and dims automatically once it starts to get dark out. Easy to use and understand while driving. It gives you plenty of notice before exits and turns. Highly recommend this unit.

I would think that a device who's only purpose was to navigate would do a better job. I am on a trip on route 66 and then on way back Mt Rushmore and Minneapolis. Along the trip there were places it couldn't find. There were times it would reset putting in an address. I am not impressed. I have had to use Google map several times instead if the GPS. Now when it works it navigates well which is why it at least got a 2.

I bought this new TomTom because I left my older one at home while traveling on vacation. The new one is so slow and the maps have not been kept up to date. I was very disappointed in this new unit. I gave it to my daughter when I got home and went back to using the older version. This new one takes forever to locate satellites.

I was traveling and turned off my previous TomTom when stopping for lunch. When I pressed the start button after lunch - it was dead. I beat feet to the local Best Buy and bought literally what they had on the shelf. The unit works fine but is is quite a bit smaller than my dead one. It is a nice unit and I will use until it "dies".

My built in car GPS is painful to update, this I can just plug in to the computer and go. I like have the GPX lower left of the windshoield in the corner of my vison rather in the center of the console where I need to take my eyes off the road

Does not work great at all!, gives wrong directions, (Left or Right) too many steps to take to add address, does not remember previous towns for convenience, only remembers last town entered, lags, drags, and buffers. I wish I never bought it! older tom tom much better!

Slow at everything, way to expensive for what you getting.. finding addresses takes to many steps compared to older version, screen to dark on sunny days. Slow on redirecting. Didn't wow me for the price i expected a better experience

    Life time map update

    Posted
    Andy

"Lifetime" means for the lifetime of the product, not you. The manufacturer will declare the EOL and the updates die with it. That is the only reason I am forced to shop for a new GPS even though I have a perfectly functioning device installed in my car.
