Customers are impressed with the picture quality, calling it excellent and clear. They also appreciate the easy setup and competitive price. The Fire TV platform is considered user-friendly, with Alexa voice control being a popular feature. However, some customers have concerns about the remote control, sound quality, durability, color settings, and short lifespan of the TV.

Great picture and sound. We live between 2 cities and as a cord cutter use antennas to receive over the air local channels. Fire TV does not support channel numbers in their guide so all we see are 2 CBS's and 2 NBC's, etc. in alphebetic order with no way of telling which city we are tuning to. This is a deal breaker for us and plan on swapping it back in for something else. Contacted both Amazon and Toshiba. Apparently, all Fire TV and Amazon Fire devices have this issue and Amazon has not fixed it.

Toshiba Hits a Triple... lacks some basic needs

Toshiba is not currently a huge player in the TV market, but they have done a pretty good job with this TV... but not with some shortcomings. Lack of features that a basic user would want need to be added, even at this price point. The package comes with the TV, 2 detachable legs, Fire TV remote marketed for this setup, 2 AAA batteries, power cable, and user instructions.
Rather than go over ALL the specs which you can already find on this Bestbuy.com page, I'll try to give more observations of those specs instead. In addition, my pictures show the positioning of how the ports on the back of the TV are laid out.
PROS:
-----------
* Initial setup was simple and user-friendly. The TV automatically updates itself once connected to your network.
* Extremely great picture for this price point. At $400, one of the best I've seen for a 50" TV. Watching HDR via Netflix premiere package looks phenomenal. I watched "Thor Ragnarok" and "Guardians of the Galaxy V2" and picture clarity was stunning.
* With access to hundreds of apps in the Play Store, this makes for a great Smart TV option having Fire TV built-in; however, see "CONS" #4 below for possible setback.
* Responsive remote, buttons solid, don't have to be aimed at TV (works via BT).
* With lack of good sound via TV speakers, they can be turned off so that a sound bar or audio system can be used. It's a huge plus that both optical audio and headphone (analog) jack are available. If optical audio port is used, the speaker control (+/- button) on the Toshiba remote cannot be used; however if the headphone jack is used instead, you can use the TV speaker controls in addition to your other external speaker/system volume.
* The TV uses a standard detachable TV cord instead of having a block/transformer combo (like most laptops have).
* The TV includes both wi-fi and ethernet connection availability. You should generally use wired whenever possible as wi-fi antennas can degraded over time.
CONS:
-----------
* There is NO TV support via phone call (only phone support for their PC computers is available). Upon calling their customer support line, this was stated on the recording, and they said for support you can go to http://go.toshiba.com/tv That is NOT a preferred option for most people. The website had a knowledge base and some general support topics.
* There is NO regular TV remote control (with numbers, input, settings). All settings and input controls are done via the Fire TV remote in the Settings menu from the Home page. You can use voice...but suppose you are in bed with someone that is sleeping and you want to change the channel (via antenna TV), there is no convenient way to do so without speaking and possibly waking up the other person. Was it not possible to create a full but simple regular TV remote with the Fire TV functions included?
* After the TV is setup with your Amazon account, it goes to the Fire TV home page. However, if you go to HDMI 1 or 2 and decide to use another device or watch TV via cable provider...and THEN power off the TV, the next time you power on, it won't start where it left off. It will start you out on Fire TV regardless (not on HDMI 1 or 2). So if you have a cable box hooked up and use that function more than anything, you'll have to change to the HDMI input each time you power up the TV. There is no option that will keep your current input as the input used on a power off/on sequence. Toshiba should offer a firmware update to add this option. This is a big problem IMO.
* Though many apps are available in the Play Store, this TV only has slightly over 4GB of internal storage. That is not good. However, the TV does have a USB port which can be used for External Storage options. I had a spare 32GB thumb drive which I plugged in... the TV asked to format the drive, so I did... and it does work as extra space. But a possible problem you now have is the fact that you can't use your USB drive for an optional power source for other USB devices if those should be used. It's workable, but having more internal memory would have been a better option.
* TV offers Composite (Y/WR) input but no Component (GBR/WR) input (or combo of the two which some TVs have).
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
------------------------------------
* This TV appears to be more for the cord cutters out there as using HDMI or other inputs regularly could be a slight nuisance each time you power on the TV.
* Onkyo 10W speakers offer as good a sound as most other TVs if you decide not to use a sound bar or audio system. It's not great, but definitely doable. Great sound from a base TV speaker system is rarely expected.
* The edge of the TV is black plastic that doesn't offer a lot of visual appeal. This is minor as the main focus should be on the picture which is very good.
* Because it has legs on each end instead of having a center stand, the TV cannot swivel and has to remain stationary.
* TV is a bit thick (depth) so mounting may be a bit tedious. It's not very light to be mounted either at ~30 lbs.
* TV is BT-capable but only connects to other Amazon Fire TV remotes, Fire TV game controllers, and other BT devices such as "other" remotes, keyboards, and mice. I was unable to pair up my phone (Samsung Note 8) with the TV in any way for Casting or other functions.
* TV has the ability to connect with Alexa and be connected via Amazon Echo. I don't have an Echo so was unable to try this feature.
* In addition to this TV taking updates, the remote also has to take updates. But you will only know if your remote needs to be updated if you go into the Fire TV settings and check where it states the version remote that you have. It will state there if it's up-to-date or if it needs updating. The process takes about a minute or two to update.
CONCLUSION:
=================
Though this is a TV with Fire TV built-in, a "regular" TV remote setup would be a great addition to the device. That's what most people are accustomed to. I'm not sure why a bigger remote with the same functions and number pad, etc couldn't have been designed for this unit. That's my biggest complaint along with the last-used input not being active after the TV is powered OFF/ON. Toshiba - can this be corrected with a simple Firmware update? If users can get around some of the inconveniences of the TV, the end result isn't very bad. Some of these flaws can be expected at this price, but given the price point, it's still a good buy. A few minor changes would make this an exceptional product.

Hello,
Thank you very much for your review of our Toshiba Amazon Fire TV Edition TV. Following up on your comments around TV channel tuning, there are several features available to help find and tune to your favorite channels.
1. From the Home Screen the "Recent" row will show the channel that you last watched.
2. Also from the Home Screen, the "On Now" row will show the last several channels that you watched. Similar to that, when you are watching a TV show, pressing the menu down key will show a channel guide which also shows the last several channels you watched.
3. Additionally, the remote control includes a "Channel Guide" button, which lists all the available TV channels. When you are in the channel guide, pressing the Menu button on the remote will give you options to save stations to a Favorite Channel list, and also to show the Favorite Channel list or All channels.
UPDATE 07/18/18: We take customer's feedback very much into consideration so we have recently enabled a software update that provides a new feature that allows the TV to power up directly to the last input you were watching. This software will be automatically downloaded to the TV when your TV is connected to your home network. You can also check for new software updates from the Settings menu: from that menu navigate to Device & Software -> About -> Check for System Update. If new software is available it will then update.
To change the TV to power up directly to the last input setting, press the Home button on your remote control and select the Settings menu. Then select the Display & Sounds menu and change the Power On setting to Recent row. With this new setting, the TV will power up to the last input that was watched. Keep enjoying your new TV!

VERY Nice 4K HDR TV at a Great Price!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Now this may sound stupid, because it probably is, but I already had a nice 4K TV that was less than 2 years old but didn't have HDR. It was beautiful and did a great job as my 'man cave' TV for movies and Xbox gaming. Since I purchased that TV I have upgraded my Xbox to the One X with HDR and I have a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray player so I have been itching to see how much of a difference the HDR thing really makes. I can now definitively say that, to me, the upgrade to HDR is worth it. It is especially worth it when you can get this in a $400 TV!
I used to own a lot of Toshiba stuff back in the day but for some reason they seemed to never be on my short list for the longest time. I know the TV market has gotten saturated with a lot of new players and perhaps they just weren't getting the shelf space that they used to. Well, this price point and these features should definitely put it on the map for you if you had kind of forgotten about them like I had.
I have run several 4K Ultra HD movies through this TV and they look stunning though to tell you the truth these I had a hard time actually seeing the HDR effect even with both TVs side by side. Perhaps it is my selection of movies/TV shows (lots of sci-fi) but if that was all it was I would have been pretty disappointed. Looked awesome, but not worth getting a new TV over. Now when I started playing some of my Xbox One games that have been optimized for 4K and HDR, THEN I could tell the difference. Perhaps it is because a movie or a TV show is short compared with the time spent in a game. Some of these games I have been playing for an unfortunate number of hours and I know them extremely well so the differences really popped. Areas that previously had been a tad dark and almost muddy now had detail in them. Colors seem more 'correct' or perhaps more lifelike. Also, in some games I would have to boost the brightness to even really play it (or play in the dark) to get enough contrast (and this was on a really high-rated big name 4K TV). Now the plain Game mode is just perfect because and I don't have to wash out the colors with increased brightness. BTW, that had nothing to do with the 'realness' of the colors, that is actually most pronounced in well-lit parts of the game.
The Amazon Fire being built in is nice, though my other TV also had a great selection of apps as well (to include Prime Video). I don't have much use for Alexa, so that is neither a positive or a negative for me. The homepage feature when you turn on the TV is also helpful but if you don't agree you can turn that feature off.
So what are the drawbacks that are obviously there for a $400 4K HDR TV. The big one is that it is big, or actually it is thick. While the 50' only weighs a little over 40lbs, I'n not sure this would look as great hanging on a wall as some other TVs. Fortunately I have a TV stand for this anyway that holds all the players and the TV and leaves wall space for movie posters and an 'I Love Me' wall. This is not a sleek bezel-less design that 'disappears' while viewing. It is a lot of plastic and more plastic. Toshiba put the money into this for the screen and I'm happy with that. Again, perhaps not your show TV that you have for all to see but for a game room or bedroom TV, this is a winner.
If you have been waiting for a good TV at a great price with HDR support, you won't be disappointed in the picture that the Toshiba Fire TV Edition gives you. If you have been waiting even for a 4K upgrade, then this is a no-brainer and is an awesome TV at a great price.

Bought this to use as my home monitor for reading PDF blueprints.
Sat in the box for a week, then when I finally started using it I fired it up one evening to find a solid vertical line.
Returned and bought a 50in Vizio for 30 bucks more.
I've used a Vizio 43 smart TV at my office computer all day every day for at least 3 or 4 years and never any issues.

Impressive and affordable 4K TV fire TV edition

We’ve had this TV for 3 weeks already and it has been positioned as our main TV replacing our aging Sony HD 42’ flat screen TV in the living room. This is our first time owning a Toshiba and my whole family has been satisfied enjoying 4K and HD content.
Initial Setup: initial setup was a breeze, except for the fact that it needed your Amazon account in order to get Apps installed (I am not really fond of having Amazon snooping on what we consume). I also have a Roku 4K that I bought from BestBuy, so I was not initially much comfortable adding my Amazon account, but I decided to configure it with my Amazon Prime account to try some of the Apps. Setup was easy, I had the TV running after a few minutes (after upgrades). Initial home screen reminds me a little of the Xbox One home screen, but well, this one has access to the different HDMI ports and settings for display and audio. I also added PIN protection to disable buying content automatically. YouTube, Netflix and other Apps installed just fine. Roku 4k seems like a redundant device, but I decided to have it connected permanently, mainly because we have gotten used to it on the other TVs.
Display (settings): I was not really bought into the 4K frenzy. Yes going to BestBuy and Costco, one could tell that 4K seemed more enjoyable; however, a few feet behind, HD and 4K wouldn’t be that different I would say, but I was wrong, 4K is just awesome. Colors are vibrant (well other TVs may be comparable provided settings are adjusted accordingly) and out of the box, I only had to do minor adjustments (e.g. decrease brightness for the Cable TV HDMI connection).
Interestingly, the display settings are per HDMI port. One HDMI port for Cable TV, other for Xbox One, and the last one for Roku 4K, and each one has its own (slightly different) settings. There is a vast series of parameters to configure which I assume can satisfy the most demanding videophiles. Also, there is automatic preconfigured settings that can be used if you don’t want to spend much time paying with the settings.
We have content in SD, HD and 4K. 4K no doubt brings the best, HD doesn’t disappoint, but SD is just not very enjoyable, it might be also because of the size of the screen, at 50” the coarse “pixels” are clearly noticeable and some odd colors may result as well (I would have expected for the TV to make some adjustments to the quality but I think it doesn’t, I might be wrong). For example, watching the Soccer World Cup in SD was not vey enjoyable, one game in which the goalkeeper had a yellow outfit when focused closely, suddenly it turned orange from the distance with a halo yellowish effect. Other SD content was more enjoyable though. I would recommend this TV for HD and 4K content consumption.
Audio: I was having issues connecting my 5.1 Sony audio system with the TV, so I decided to just give it a try to the built-in speakers, this one is really 5 points, sound is excellent (at least when compared to other devices with Audio that we have at home), it is so good that it feels like we don’t need our Audio system to be hooked up (well we will have the Audio system hooked up :) at some point). I am planning on setting up my Sony receiver with this TV (this will eat one of the HDMI ports leaving only two if I want a direct connection to the TV, though).
Connectivity: glad there is still at least one old composite Audio/video port available, so I can use my classic PS2 console to play some old school games. I am disappointed that there are only 3 HDMI ports! My old Sony has 5, plus other old school connections.
Software: So far, the fire TV edition hasn’t disappointed, navigation and the like feels easy enough. Besides easy access to all Amazon content, Alexa is being sold as one of the prominent features. We don’t like digital assistants, or for that matter, a disruptive agent that learns what we do and the like, so we haven’t used Alexa at all. I assume we could be happier telling orders to it, but I don’t mind using the remote(s) to access what I want. If at some point the “espionage” level of Alexa and Amazon levels down, then I might consider it. Lastly on this matter, to be fair, the software feels well crafted, so a compliment to Amazon.
Others:
- Remote control felt very over simplified at first and I suspected it was that way to entice people to interact with Alexa. We don’t use Alexa, and so far we’ve had no real issues with the remote control except for having to type the PIN whenever we are making some configuration change or accessing the Apps.
- I got the feeling that this TV was too heavy and it seemed to be thicker to other similar devices (other brands such as Vizio). I needed help to place it on top our TV stand. I shouldn’t complain though, at least the construction of this device feels solid when compared to others.
- Finally, this is our first 4K TV and we may be biased to give it a 5 start rating, but given the range of settings for Video for this TV, I can tell one can definitely configure it to be at par with other more high end 4K TVs, so a 5 is well deserved.

Great 4K LED TV
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
After my last experience with an under-$500 LED TV (a Samsung), I was dubious that I’d find a worthwhile LED TV within this price range. Therefore I was surprised that Toshiba was able to produce a cost conscious LED TV while maintaining fundamental features, such as a great picture and sound.
Setup
The setup was pretty straight forward. I decided to use a wall mount instead of the legs and I had no problem installing it. The TV sticks out about 5 inches from the wall, which is about the same depth as the soundbar.
The initial programming gave step-by-step instructions and choices, which were easily understood. After the setup was complete, I was watching a show, and the TV randomly locked out the screen, requesting I kept the remote within a close distance while it updated (this took about 3 minutes). I’m hoping this isn’t a frequent occurrence.
Picture
Even though I believe the picture quality is better than most of the TVs within this price range, I felt it was not as good as other 4K competitors. I can’t really fault Toshiba for this since they are about half the price.
Sound
I am not a fan of internal speakers, but the quality and volume of sound this TV produces is amazing. I was very impressed with how clear the voices were and how loud the speakers were.
Pros
Rapid startup
Good, clear picture
Little motion blur
Well-balanced speakers
Cons
Remote randomly updated and blocked picture for about 3 minutes after setup was complete
Thicker frame than competitors
I would readily recommend this TV to anyone who has a budget of less than $500 and doesn’t want to sacrifice important features. I believe this is one of the best TVs within its class and price point.

Tv Zion kodi Mobdro

The only reason I bought this tv is because it’s an android platform smart tv and I refuse to give a penny to the mockingbird media or any spirit cooking celebrities. Unlike most smart TVs I can add all my favorite add ons without a firebox. I use kodi for live cable channels some 4K movies (without real debrid) and use Zion tv for 1080 movies and tv shows (fast amazing free) I like how the antenna tv shows up in the amazon tool bar, reminds me of the uverse menu. The picture quality is a little grainy in 1080, not sure the tv does much upscaling and in uhd it’s only impressive when cameras zoomed in on characters. Still looks good for 199.99 43in android tv that does everything i want it to with one remote and 0 hdmi plugs in use. I have access to everything and only pay for a vpn, prime, internet and 100.00 refurbished router. Someone who owns a 3000.00 4K with good upscaling would be disappointed with picture quality but it’s perfect for me.

Having bought one of the high end Sony 4K 65 inch tvs with HDR, you can tell the difference in the picture quality. There is a different level of crispness that the money gets you. But, don't get me wrong...for the price the picture is nice. I got this for my parents who are not tech savvy and previously had a 1080P 42 inch Insignia...you could tell this was an upgrade in picture quality. I don't have some of the gripes others have posted about. The remote is pretty much useless unless you are streaming tv. That's ok...they had a universal cable remote...no biggie there. And it looks like when you initially get it out of the box, it always brings up the home menu and you have to select your inbox to watch live tv. But, Toshiba has upgraded there firmware and can select in your options to always power on to live tv. Those were the two biggest gripes I read about and none issues for me. Outside of that, if you are looking for a basic smart 4K tv at a cheap price, the toshiba seems to be a good pick. We will see how long it lasts...

This TV has great picture quality, vibrant colors and deep black. The capabilities that are inherent in the TV with its SMART links is wonderful to allow us more options for our viewing and listening choices. The price added to the value proposition when we purchased, had the TV delivered and professionally installed. All went well. The team was prompt and work was accomplished perfectly. Had multiple reminders from Best Buy regarding the delivery time which was also beneficial. Great service and product.
