A lot for a little - with some caveats

First off, for anyone who doesn't know, Toshiba has not made TVs for the US market since 2015. Instead, they have licensed their name to Compal Electronics, a Taiwanese manufacturer known for producing computers for major brands including Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and, of course, Toshiba. For this reason, you will not find this model on Toshiba's corporate website. If your goal is to get a TV made by a major name brand company with a well-established customer support network, this may not be the TV for you. But if this is not a concern, read on. The Toshiba 55L711U18 is a budget 4K TV that, when it is on sale, is about the least expensive 55" TV available at the time of this review. It has a pleasingly thin bezel and minimalistic curved support legs made out of brushed metal that combine to make the make the TV look much more expensive than it's price would indicate. The fact that the stand is centered also allows the TV to be placed on furniture narrower than the TV itself. Picture quality is quite decent with good contrast and average black levels. Clouding is present, but not distracting and there was no evidence of flashlighting on the set I purchased. As long as you're not watching space battles in a pitch-black room, you're unlikely to be annoyed. Viewing angle is a different story. I purchased this set because I often watch from off-angle seating positions and it is promoted as having "178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles". For this reason, I believed the TV had to have an IPS panel. It does not. This is merely marketing jargon. The set actually has a VA panel. Most budget and midrange TVs have VA panels because they offer superior contrast and black levels to IPS panels. But they also have poor viewing angles. If you sit in front of this TV, it'll look great. But while it is indeed possible to see the Toshiba's picture from virtually any angle, colors will lose saturation and brightness when you don't view the TV from straight on. Motion blur is present and is about average for a TV with a 60hz panel. Upscaling on the Toshiba is poor. Clean 1080p video is sharp and upscales well. But lower resolution and compressed videos were grainy, with significant color noise and artifacting. If you stream a variety of content from the around the Internet, this is not the set for you. Sound quality is superior compared to similar TVs. While none of today's thin TVs have adequate space to house large speakers and won't provide any meaningful bass, the Toshiba produces pleasingly clear sound and volume levels for most small to mid-sized rooms. The inclusion of both digital audio and headphone jacks also provide great flexibility should you desire to route the sound to something else. The Toshiba 55L711U18 has an adequate number of inputs: 3 HDMI, and one composite, coax, ethernet and USB port. All are recessed on the back so mounting the set flush to the wall won't be a problem. However, the Ethernet, composite and coax inputs are mounted downward in a slot that will be quite difficult to access after the TV has been mounted. Input lag is slight, but just noticeable, so twitchy hardcore gamers may have an issue. But casual gameplay was acceptable. The remote for the Toshiba 55L711U18 provides the necessary buttons to access all the TV's functions, but has the significant flaw of not having any number buttons. As a result, channels can only be changed by scrolling up or down through them. The Toshiba 55L711U18 is not a smart TV, so there are no apps to watch things like Netflix. However, it does have Google's Chromecast, which allows you to streams apps like Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, etc. from a smartphone to the TV. The Toshiba 55L711U18 is a budget set that offers a very large display and high-end looks for a very small price. It provides good movie and average TV picture quality, though TV viewing is hampered by the subpar remote and off-angle viewing is not what the marketing copy implies. Input lag might annoy some hardcore gamers, but is acceptable for casual gameplay. Built-in sound quality is very good. A decent assortment of inputs and the inclusion of Chromecast provide the TV a useful variety of viewing sources. Heavy Internet viewers who watch videos of varying quality, hardcore gamers, and anyone who often watches off-angle may want to consider other options. But those looking for the biggest screen for the least amount of money, will be hard-pressed to find an alternative with better picture and quality.

11/21/17 I just purchase this TV 2 months ago and its the worst thing I have ever done. The picture started sticking to the TV and when I turn it off the TV goes blank but stays on unresponsive. The only way to completly turn it off is disconnecting it from the power source. I also have tried everything from different outputs to reseting the TV. Im supposed to have 1 year warranty through Toshiba and when I try to register the product it says this TV is not found. I sent a couple of emails to them and nobody has gotten back to me at all. I called and they said they can't help me because they don't trouble shoot through the phone its only online, they couldn't even help me to register the TV. Its been 4 days and nobody has gotten back to me, I have been trying and trying. I give this TV a 1 start but if I could I wouldn't even give it a star at all. Stay away from this company and this TV its waste of your money. I got this cause the guy at Best Buy said it's a better brand than the one I wanted to get. I should had stuck to the other TV. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. LIKE I SAID IT HAS BEEN 2 MONTHS WHY IS A BRAND NEW TV GIVING ME PROBLEMS?

    First 4K tv

The picture quality is fantastic! This the first 4k tv I've ever owned. It's one thing to see them in stores and yeah they look amazing, but you never know for sure what it's like until you actually watch the content YOU enjoy in your own home. The sound coming out of it is surprisingly balanced and full. It gets decently loud without much distortion. By no means will it be better then having a actual decent sound system obviously, but it holds up for now. The built in chromecast is one of the main reasons I chose this tv and it worked great when I first set it up. Recently however, I'm having problems with using it on my iPhone 8 plus and apps like youtube, netflix, and crunchyrooll. It will connect when I launch the app but not play what I select. Or sometimes it will work on say, a youtube video and when I want to switch to netflix or even just play another video on youtube, the screen is stuck on the splash screen for youtube. I can't disconnect and go back to the home screen and rebooting the tv to get it to work is hit or miss.. Not sure if it's my phone or the tv. I've tried setting up from new after defaulting the tv but I'm still seeing the same problem. All in all a great tv in terms of picture quality, but this chromecast issue is weird.

    Solid TV, few quirks

I bought this tv on black friday, so the deal I got on this TV was amazing and I cannot complain about pretty much anything at that price. However, there are a few quirks that have been a little irritating. 1. When plugging in headphones into the 3.5mm out port works as expected, however when I take them out and want it to switch back to the optical audio out it for some reason doesn't auto switch. I had to either turn the tv off and back on again for it to work or go into the sound settings and turn speakers off and back on again, then the soundbar attached to my optical audio worked great. Small thing, but not sure why that happens. 2. Chromecast kept disconnecting from my phone and I would have to recast to the tv, this could been fault to the tv and possibly just the apps I was using but, still annoying. Still wish apple had built in support for chrome cast on iOS but Obviously that is wishful thinking and won't ever happen because they want you to buy an apple tv. Another thing I wish I could do is run this tv 4k@60hz through my MacBook pro. The tv itself doesn't have many options but I assume this is also an apple issue, because they don't support that refresh rate to this tv when connected over hdmi, maybe if this tv had display port it would be possible. Overall great Picture, and games through my xbox one s look incredible.

So far I enjoy it, though I've only spent about an hour watching it since mounting it on my wall. The tv itself is nice, and the built in Chromecast works great. It was nice that accessibility was defaulted to have a voice tell me what menu I was on, etc. but it was annoying since I don't need that feature and I immediately turned it off. The one downfall was with mounting the tv. The mount I bought from Rocketfish came with a bunch of screws of various sizes to accommodate the tv, but one of the screw holes had misaligned treads in it, thus I had to go to the hardware store to purchase screws of the correct length. To describe the issue further, there were four holes for mounting screws. The top two holes the treads weren't at the edge of the hole (the screw didn't have to screw in until it was in the hole a bit). One of those top holes the tread was misaligned, and the screw wouldn't reach the tread at all. Not sure why the screw treads couldn't all be at the same depth of the screw holes. For those mounting the tv, you might run into the hassle I noted, which was the reason for the lack of star on my rating.

Black Friday Doorbuster Reviewer : On Thanksgiving Day, I went to wait in line on Best Buy for the SHARP 50” 4K TV for $180. That was a deal of a lifetime. Unfortunately, they were already sold out by the time I went into the store. Feeling defeated, I vowed to come back early on Friday & go for the Toshiba 55” 4K TV for $280. So, I drove to BB at 5:30am, waited in the car until 6am and then got on line. Waited 2 hours in the cold but it was so worth it because when I brought that baby back home, I fell in love with it. Like actually seeing my baby for the first time. (which I don’t have yet) Every night I turn it on just to stare at how gorgeous it looks. I thought the 5 inches wouldn’t make a difference and it’s true. The 55” is amazing especially the 4K. I play my XBOX ONE & PS4 games on here & the quality is just amazing. The details that this TV provides. It’s also very thin so it fits anywhere very nicely oh, and also it comes with CHROMECAST built in. Now, I can just cast my NETFLIX, SPOTIFY, YOUTUBE or HBO anytime. This TV is a great model and so far, no problems so hopefully it’ll stay that way. Other than that, I am very satisfied and can’t wait to go home to see my baby.

All the review about how great the picture quality is lead me to buy this TV. The picture quality is not that great. I don't see how it got all these great reviews. There a cloudiness to the picture and has poor 4k upscale and the colors is off doesn't matter what i do in the settings.. My 1080p TV looks better than this toshiba 4k TV. The toshiba does show a bit more details than my 1080p but the color is off, the HDR on this tv is not any good and i don't know how to turn it off, its not in the settings that i can see. Hard to read when letters show up on a white background. The best thing about this TV is the sound, now the sound works great on this TV. I had high expectations for this tv and was totally let down. Of course i wasn't expecting the quality to be comparable to the $1000+ 4k TVs, i was expecting more out of this Toshiba then what i got. Its going back to the store.

Great for first time 4K tv

I do not regret buying this tv, caught it on a Black Friday sale. However it is somewhat of a nuisance. Firstly, the hdmi poets have two settings, 2.2 being for 4K capability. However, I am unable to hear sound with my cable box when I use it. Secondly, when you try to turn off tv it freezes, content disappears but tv remains on. Only way to fix it is to unplug tv. Thirdly, I can not register this tv with toshiba, it says no product found. I’m not sure how I have a one year manufacture warranty if the manufacturer does not even acknowledge it as their product. Which leads to my final annoyance which is trouble shooting. Since they do not recognize the product I don’t know where exactly to get product specific info or help. Other then those I am happy with the picture quality it has when I use my roku and PS4, and the sound is amazing. I can listen to it on level 5 volume and hear everything clear. Great for a first time 4K user like myself but if you are use to this tv quality and looking to replace or purchase a secondary set, you may want to look elsewhere.

Good price. As I use the google ecosystem the chrome cast built in is a plus. The 4K is great. The assembly was easy. You do want a second person to help you lift the "tv bag" out of the box and for final placement. It is a light tv but I wanted to be careful with the new purchase. I have cast YouTube from my phone to the tv and from a chrome browser window to the tv. Works well. The chrome cast is its own "channel" when you cycle inputs on the tv. the tv is connected to my wifi and I get good 4K with it. Right now this is the only way to get 4K for me because the XboxOne doesn't support 4K so we cast from a stream to the tv. The majority of content we display for now is 1080 and it looks fine on this tv.

We purchased this TV during Black Friday on a fantastic deal, so we weren't going into this with very high expectations. We were excited to be getting a larger TV than we had before, and VERY excited about the built-in Chromecast (as this would open an HDMI slot for us). We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of picture and numerous options for getting coloring how we like it. I took off 1 star because of an issue we had a few weeks after using the TV. We started to notice that the red power light was blinking anytime the TV was on. We did research and found out that the blinking light is like an error code of sorts, but couldn't find any information about WHAT error our TV was having. Out of no where our TV started doing an update to the firmware, which solved the issue... but it was frustrating to know we had an error but no way of disciphering what the error was. The issue seems to be resolved and we're enjoying the TV now, but we are keeping an eye on the light.

If you grew up poor and can't mentally justify spending a month of rent in urban California on a single television, if you're poor as heck right now but could conceivably afford this television, if you've never owned a 4k TV, if you've never owned an especially large TV, you will not be disappointed by this gigantic freaking monstrosity of a display. It nicely upscales 1080p content, it has a nice frame rate, it has passable speakers you can hear the bass on, and as someone who is picky about delay to the point of 25ms being effectively unusable for music-based games I am very happy with the "game mode" option that removes the delay typically associated with HDMI displays. It is a good TV and everyone in my family, which includes two audio people and a visual artist, is extremely happy with it.

This TV sucks!! The color, clarity & sound are great. However, it cannot pair to the DirecTV remote for volume and channels. It's nice that if you turn on your box or firestick the tv will automatic change to that input but the sound periodically goes out and makes you change the channel (cable) or restart your system (firestick). Also, it's one button power/input sucks!! There aren't any volume or channel buttons. This TV does NOT come with a manual and surprisingly for being a well-known brand isn't comparable to many other cheaper models such as Insignia, Sylvania, etc. I feel like a bought a no-name, low-budget television. It took me 3 months to figure out the sound issue because at first it was only happening while watching DirecTV thus making me think it was my cable but the problem only exists on this TV.

I'm pretty disappointed in the product now. It's a smart enabled tv, but there is no way to download smart apps to the tv. Sites I look up keep telling me to hit a "Setup" button that doesn't exist on the remote or to go into "Network", which also doesn't exist in settings. Toshiba support is terrible to get through, like many support methods these days, as you go to the website and are forced to jump through hoops of answering a pop quiz about your scenario only to have them tell you options that include not talking to their support personnel. The Chromecast works fine, but I was hoping to stream Netflix or Amazon Prime straight from the tv since it's a smart tv. Very disappointed with this tv, as it seems I can only use it to Chromecast and not stream directly from the tv itself. Why the heck doesn't Best Buy allow members to edit a review?!

It's been 2 days. It has great picture and sound quality. But it has got some limitations too. It's a basic 4k TV with no much smart options. Pros: 1.Great picture 2.Great sound 3.Chromecast Cons: 1.I tried connecting my external HDD. Only photos displayed. None of the videos are playing. No where it is mentioned the manual about the video formats it supports. https://tvna.compal-toshiba.com/us/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2017/06/Toshiba_50_55L711U18_M18_17-0044_WEB_V3_EN_Final.pdf 2.And the screen brightness is very low when I connect external HDD and starts playing photos. You can't change this. 3.No app store. 4.No screen mirroring. 5.Very basic remote If you want more smart options, you can buy android tv box which costs you around $50.

      Hi there,

Thank you very much for your detailed review about our 4K Chromecast Built in TV. Regarding your question about supported video formats from a USB device I wanted to let you know that this TV only supports photo viewing, it does not support video playback.

Please also note that Chromecast built-in does support screen mirroring from Android devices and it is very easy to use. Visit this site for more information about this feature:  https://www.google.com/chromecast/built-in/learn/tv/

We got this TV as an open box deal so it was a great purchase (price-wise) for us. At first it was restarting itself and losing our WiFi connection occasionally and randomly, but now it seems to be doing good and it's picture is great! NOTE: We didn't realize this at first but it's not technically a "Smart TV". It has built in chromecast which means you can't just pickup the remote and browse netflix/hulu. You have to use your smart phone and "Cast" your show onto the TV or if you have Google Home, that'll cast Netflix, YouTube and Music to your TV. I still think it's great and it's really not that much of a hassle to use your phone since you basically have it with you all the time anyway!

Picked up this TV knowing the refresh rate was 60htz. However, when you think about it, how often are you watching action sequence anyway. Also, since I'm not a sports fan, the tv works very well for me. I don't use it for games either so, no problem there. The picture is very clear. Could it be better? Of course, but was I willing to pay $3k for a QLED or an OLED. I'm not that picky, I'd rather have a better car or go on a longer vacation than buy a $3 thousand dollar TV. If you are conscious on what you spend, this is,an outstanding TV hands down. If you like living beyond your means, then more power to you, be happy with your choice and don't let anyone pressure you into a different choice.

First the price $399.99. Picture is very good for entry level 4K and has plenty of brightness. Still haven't tuned the settings. I hooked it up by myself, leg mounts. Not to heavy, just bulky for one person. Easy to use remote. No #'s on remote, it is very simple. Decent TV for such a low price. I did not need smart functions for streaming content. Comcast box and DVD player have smart features I use. Now I think I will tune it tonight. Not a $3,000 TV, but a great entry level 4K worth every penny. If your budget is set to a limit highly recommend this TV. My budget was $400, expected less then this unit.

The image is clear and sharp. Nice darks, the HDR is not super strong but very noticeable, way better that my Samsumg 40" which doesn't have it. The "soap opera" effect that plagues cheap 4K TVs is rare, and when it happens it can be easily fixed by disabling the "clearframe" advanced picture option (the name of Toshiba's anti-blur technology). Built-in Chromecast works smoothly, I just miss being able to turn my TV on using the connected Chromecast that is never turned off, but it is not a big deal. Great TV, I already returned a Visio once that was more expensive and have terrible blacks and very annoying "soap opera" effect. Recommended.

This has chrome cast which is nice if you watch a lot of YouTube. It has no apps on it ( the tv makers want you to stream everything from your phone now) . If you have a amazon account to watch movies it isn’t going to happen on this tv without buying a fire stick. It does have a nice picture most of the time , however it gets real blurry from time to time and I have to turn it off and back on again or reset the tv to factory levels which is pain because then you have to redo the chrome cast setup again. If you just want a cheap tv to watch , this will do however if you want more from your tv look at something else.

I picked up this tv as a black Friday doorbuster. It was $279 but I believe regular price is $499. Either way, I think this is an amazing 4k tv for $500. 55" and has chromecast. Now it's not a smart tv per say. The apps aren't built in but you can mirror the apps through your phone so any app works. And in case the app doesn't work with chromecast, chromecast has an option to mirror your phone screen to your tv. So i would say it's better than any smart tv as long as you have a smart phone or a tablet. My only complaint is that its not a chromecast ultra.
