Customers consistently note the excellent picture quality, with many praising the vibrant colors and value for the price. However, some users experienced issues with screen mirroring and reported slow navigation within the smart TV interface. A few also mentioned problems with screen brightness and occasional flickering. Overall, the positive feedback on picture quality is prominent, but potential drawbacks related to screen performance and responsiveness should be considered.

A Cost Efficient Upgrade

Our old Toshiba TV 50" (lasted 10 years and was not a Smart TV) started to have brightness issues with one of the main LED panels. Found this as a replacement and when comparing the price and the specs to other options, this was what I felt was the best deal to replace our other TV. So far it's been a sound upgrade. No issues with watching TV or playing games (PS5). We did need to order a new mounting screw set to convert this TV to what we were previously using with our older Toshiba model.

This TV is excellent in both picture quality and sound. No need for sound bar unless you want surround sound. I have purchased an LG and Samsung which only lasted 2 years respectively. Neither had the picture and sound quality of the Toshiba. I highly recommend this TV.

Choose the Toshiba - 55" Class M550 Series QLED 4K UHD Smart Fire TV if better picture technology is more important to you. Its QLED panel, Full Array Local Dimming, and 120Hz native refresh rate provide superior contrast, more vibrant colors, and smoother motion for gaming and sports, features typically found in higher-priced TVs. The Toshiba also has a superior built-in sound system with a subwoofer.

If this Toshiba unit lasts as long as the 46” Toshiba I bought 14 years ago, I’ll be one very satisfied customer. I only bought a new TV because my old 46”one was just beginning to show its age. As you can see from the photo, It still had a good picture. I just wanted one a bit bigger, smarter and 4K.

It works and looks great, especially with 4K. Streaming is good. Plenty of imputs. Optical output for audio. Voice remote. Stand is a little different but metal and sturdy

Great picture quality and sound. Replaced Samsung 50” that was showing those bad large white circles. This TV is perfect for our needs. Everything looks sharp and natural.

Got on sale. It was a good value for the price. I do not believe it compares well to OLED tvs, but it is less than 1/2 the price. Much better than my old "dumb" 1080p TV.

This thing is a lot of bang for your buck, superior 4k picture and nice out of the box sound.
I’ve had more expensive sets with built in subwoofers that sound like tin cans, this thing fills the room with all the frequencies even at low volume, turn it up and it's home theatre sound without the hassle of bars and satellites and subs to set up.
The picture is excellent with very vibrant colors and great blacks, it does have a lot of residual bloom when you get something very bright against a dark black but that is the only negative of the tv. If I had found this before I bought my more expensive sets I wouldn’t have bought them, great picture and sound at a great price.

The Toshiba 55" M550 QLED TV is a value for the price — sharp 4K picture, good brightness, and Dolby Vision support. However, the experience is held back by a sluggish and limited Fire OS, underwhelming color accuracy, very few calibration options, and outdated USB 2.0 ports.

Great value but software lag

The picture is good and the installation is easy. The value-to-cost is very good on this television. However, this required a factory-reset right out of the box because the default settings would not play audio from any of the plugged in HDMI sources without the factory reset and nearly a dozen software update installations. The motion smoothing/"soap-opera" mode is an absolute nuisance to try to find and turn off in order to make action movies watchable. And all of these updates and setting changes have to be accomplished with a significant lag between the controller input and response on the tv. I am sure that this is fantastic for live sports (not my preferred pastime) and I do not regret buying it. But you should be prepared for a lengthy negotiation through software and lag to turn it into your daily media device.

For the price this is a great TV. Viewing content such as YouTube videos and movies is a great experience. Picture is bright and vivid. HDR content is pretty good as well. Haven’t gamed on it as I bought it for the living room so can’t address gaming performance in this review. The speakers are very good for TV speakers but you’ll obviously want a soundbar for solid bass and better sound for movies. If you’re looking for a step above the cheapest TV option this is a good choice!

I purchased this TV based on my personal history with Toshiba TVs. From my perspective, Toshiba has always made TVs that punch above their weight class in terms of picture quality. This is my first smart Toshiba TV though, and I will be sadly returning it.
I will start by saying that after some adjustments, the picture quality is great. I found that the "PC" preset provided the best picture for my tastes and environment. There's a lot of additional picture quality settings to tweak if desired as well. I always turn of the dynamic features and motion control. local dimming is a nice feature for a TV of this price.
Sound is good too with a built-in subwoofer.
The picture quality and sound are the only good things about this TV. The software in the TV is less than stellar for everything else though. first off it is pretty slow to respond when pulling up the input menu. It also does not allow for manual wireless network configuration (IP, gateway, etc.). It is running the Amazon Vega OS so you can't use developer options either if you wanted to integrate into a home automation platform.
My absolute biggest gripe is that I can't reliably use a universal remote with this device. I use my Xbox One as the media center for my TV, and have always been able to control TV power with my Xbox using the IR blaster on the Xbox. First of all, the TV is manufactured by Hisense and rebranded as Toshiba, so I had to use a Hisense remote code for any interaction at all. I didn't find a Toshiba code that worked. When on, remote functions as expected but if TV is powered off for an extended period of time you apparently can't use IR to wake the TV. So you have to use the provided remote for the sole purpose of turning the TV on. I don't want to keep two remotes. Toshiba phone support was less than helpful, saying they don't support universal remotes.
So yeah, if you want this TV for the Amazon account integration and do not plan to use any universal remotes or home assistant with it. I'd say it represents a decent value for the price (at $249). I wouldn't pay much more for it though, and it doesn't work for me.

May be the best TV for the money ($250 discounted)

I chose this for the advertized full array local dimming. This was the only option that offered it below 250usd. Blacks are certainly better than comparable non FALD TVs. The sound is also above average. As for the fire tv, it is what it is. TV feels sluggish sometimes and you may feel lack of options if you are coming from a google tv.
Overall very colorful, contrasty, clean image. Good sound for the money. Sub 250 this is the best option I found.

“Thank you for sharing such a detailed review. We’re glad to hear the full‑array local dimming and improved black levels met your expectations, especially at this price point. It’s great to know the sound quality and overall picture performance stood out as well. We appreciate your honest notes about the Fire TV experience and occasional sluggishness—feedback like this helps others make informed decisions. We’re happy you found strong value under $250 and hope the TV continues to serve you well.”
