It's good once you get it hooked up

Setting this up was a challenge - I'm not a techno-nerd but I'm also not completely clueless when it comes to electronics. First, it only came with one set of a/v cords (red, yellow, white) - you need two. You also need a video cable - which depends on your tv type. The manual is terrible - I figured it out via trial and error. Once I got it up on the screen I went thru the manual to follow the instructions to set it up. I followed to the letter and got a blank blue screen that I couldn't get rid of. I cleared it back to the defaults and didn't make any of the adjustments the manual suggested. I read it and the toubleshooting part several times. I set the date and time and it works fine - programming is super easy. I don't have High Def and my picture is good. It's a good value for the price but be aware you'll have to spend another $10-25 on cables. Also, when recording you can't just whip a DVD in or out quickly. The first time the DVD goes in it spends a bout 45-60 seconds formatting and then when you stop, it writes to the DVD and then when insert a disk that's already formatted, you still have to wait about 30-45 seconds for it to load. So, there's a little delay when inserting and removing DVDs - plan for it if you're recording something long and continuous because you'll miss a few minutes of your show while the DVD prepares itself. It's not a bad DVD-R for the price and not sure if the more expensive models have the same issues but now that it's set up I like it.

    LOVE IT!!!!

OK, I usually don't like to review an item until I've owned it for a while, but I am so happy with this DVD recorder I just had to do it now. I love it! It was so easy to set up. The picture is awesome. It is so easy to record onto a DVD and the recorded DVD's are beautiful. It also reads other DVD's recorded on older machines. And when you compare the quality of other recorded DVD's there is just no comparision. I've spent the last year with this TERRIBLE Sharp DVD recorder/VCR unit. It would only record on 1 in 10 discs and the quality was not so good. I can not count the many wasted hours I've spent trying to get my Sharp recorder to record. So having this Toshiba is great. I have made multiple DVD's in the last few days and they all look great. I don't even have it set up through the HDMI yet and I love it. I am using Conponent Video cables until my HDMI cable comes in. The picture is so nice now I can't wait to see what happens with the HDMI cable.

This is a great DVD player for the price. It has a very nice playback picture. The picture and digital sound conversion from my old VHS(home movie and unprotected movie) tapes to DVD with the up conversion was stunning. Easy to use with simple functions. The record feature is slick. This unit is best suited for recording movies, programs and television to DVD if you don't have TIVO (or similar DVR receivers) or simply want your TIVO programs on DVD. It WILL NOT burn copyrighted VHS tapes. If you are looking for something to convert your old VHS movie collection to DVD this unit is not for you. That's what I was looking to do and I need to continue my search. Other than that it is a great unit for what it was meant to do. I would recommend this unit for what it was intended to do.

Nice DVD Recorder for the price.

I bought this DVD recorder the other day for the advertised price, brought it home set it up, and it worked perfectly. For recordings, I am running a RCA feed into it from my HD cable box ( 480p feed ) and runnning that out to my HDTV via component cables so that I can record and watch things at the same time. I have not hooked up the HDMI output to my TV yet, but I do not anticipate any upconvert problems there. This is a nice little unit for the price and my only legitimate gripe is the recorder's titling interface. My old recorder allowed you to grab stills of what you had recorded and use them for your title screens, this was so convienent and awesome and was the only way I ever titled ANYTHING. Ultimately, for the price, this is a good buy.

    Good Value vs Cost

Reviews of products are of limited use when you have only had the product for 2 or 3 weeks. Of course it's going to work well. It goes without saying this player works well. I have seen other reviews that claim the player has very poor picture quality in longer record time settings. I have not found that to be the case. Picture quality is good enough in 4 hr record lengths, which is the longest I have done so far. Records on any type DVD except RAM DVDs. This is the first DVD recorder I have ever owned and it was easy to setup and install. For a first time owner, it seems to have a lot of features. But on the other hand, I have nothing else to compare it to. If this product continues to perform as it is now, I'd buy another one.

I have only made a few recordings, comparing LP and SP modes -SP is much better with high quality input. LP does have signficant loss. There is no 3 hr recording mode: choices are 1 hr, 2 hr, 4hr, 6 hr. 4hr - LP would be OK for TV shows you don't care to save, but SP better for DVD's you want to save and watch on another machine. Play back including purchased DVD's is good. Occasional HDMI output locks up when starting a movie and need to reload it, but usually fine.

I have had this several months. I think it is a really a great value. It works really well; records well, plays well, easy to set up and use, etc. I play regular DVD's to my high def TV and they come out sparkling! I really like the remote which is much better than my old one; it is not backlit, but it is big and has a lot of nice features.

I bought this DVDR yesterday and have just successfully burned a DVD-R with 5 one-hour TV programs, transferring from the DVR provided by the cable company and skipping all the commercials. The 100 page manual is easy to read and follow. I was able to name each show with titles I created. Now, as soon as the DVD is loaded, a menu with the name of the 5 programs appears. The machine is very user friendly. I bought the machine primarily to archive TV programs. Every time I finished recording one program, the DVDR display shows the remaining recording time, a great feature.

I have never take time to write reviews--until now. I was so pleased with this Toshiba DVD recorder I had to comment. Outstanding value, with wide range of features for such a reasonable price. Despite my reservations, having never operated a DVD recorder, and needing to integrate this one into an aging audio-video system with some outdated analog equipment, I discovered it was simple to accomplish all the functions I was looking for in my first attempt! Great features for viewing JPEG files as well as creating DVDs on multiple formats. The simple one-touch recording made the task of video transfer to DVD easier than I even expected -- why did I wait so long to tackle this task? Exceptional quality in my opinion. Cannot speak for durability (only operated it for one day now), but so far, no complaints whatsoever!

I was a little skeptical about buying another DVD recorder. My first one was Sony Combo DVD-VCR player recorder. The picture quality was horrible, I returned the player and decided to go back to the old reliable VCR. After reading the customer reviews on this product, I decided to give it another try. I was astounded at the quality of the recording, and the ease of setting up the recorder. It calls for a tuner but if you have a digital cable box you can hook up directly from the VCR archive output on the cable box to the DVD player using the DVR recordings. I used monster cables for the hook up which only took about 20 minutes. The only problem I’m now having is that I am unable to hook up and record live shows. I’m sure there’s a way…I just haven’t figured it out yet.

    Great DVD Recorder

This DVD player/recorder works great and has all the features that it claims to have. Not only does this player record DVDs from whatever it sees on the screen but it also plays DVDs. The picture quality is amazing, looks just like HD. It does take some time to learn how to use the record feature but it is still relatively simple, just like recording onto a VHS tape. I usually consult the quick reference guide they include in the box just to be sure I don't miss a step. The nice thing is that the player has different quality settings when recording, so you can choose between a bunch depending on whether you want to record a shorter or longer program or movie. Overall, this is a great value for the money and is a good investment for any home theater system.

I use this with my U-Verse set top to record live TV and shows stored on the DVR. Also use this to record home movies from the MiniDV camcorder. Have recorded numerous times without fail. The DVD's play in all my machines. NOTE: Will not record copyrighted channels, i.e the major network TV stations. You'll get an error message. (Maybe this is just a U-Verse thing). So if you want to record (to DVD) the "Big Game" or your favorite network TV shows, it will not allow it. Thus, those shows stay on my DVR until it runs out of space or I figure a way to burn them to DVD.

If you have owned and operated a VCR this DVD recorder will be a no brainer for you. I had it up and running in about 10 minutes without looking at the manual. Very simple to operate and program. The unit looks good and the menu system is easy to navigate. On the down side it is a bit loud when it spins up a DVD disc. The only other downside I found is finalizing a disc takes a bit of time. To be honest this is my first DVD recorder so this is only my impression. I would plan on about five minutes for this function. All in all this is an excellent value. I am still impressed at how well the unit performs, it's ease of operation, good looks, and low price. If you are an average user like myself I can't see you being unhappy with this unit.

To me Toshiba has always been very reliable when it comes to DVD players. This is my second Toshiba and I still have the first one and that one still works perfect and I bought it in 2002. I have the this particular one hook up to my Directv receiver and can record anything off it that I want. Very nice sleek design and the hook up was very easy. So far every DVD that I have played in it has worked as well as recorded DVD's. The price is the best part of this player/recorder.

    First Impressions: Inexpensive Workhorse

Bought this unit to replace an old Sony that wouldn't recognize 16X DVD's. (A problem that just developed, but is pretty common once I started reading up on it.) I tried a new Sony DVD burner first, but it had problems recording off network TV and premium services with copyguard issues. No problems at all with this Toshiba unit. The new Sony also failed to finalize DVD's if there were too many titles on the disk. I did a test recording 22 10 minute titles at the 4 hour speed and the DVD finalized without any problems with this Toshiba. The menu after finalizing the disk is plain white text on a blue background. Nothing special, but gets the job done. I thought I would have issues with the title entering method. Yes, it is like a cell phone without a text keypad, but its actually much faster than the Sony layout where you have to click over the entire screen to select individual letters. I've had the unit a week, so I cannot say anything about the durabilty issues. I've recorded many programs successfully on a wide variety of DVD brands and haven't run into any problems so far. I am disappointed that there isn't a 3 hour recording speed. This was my 'economical' recording speed with the old Sony. The 2 hour SP speed looks fantastic though If this unit only last a year before dying, I've gotten my money's worth at this great price of $119.

Picked this unit up a couple of weeks ago to replace a different brand that didn't work anymore. I must say it's a great unit. Great picture even at slower recording speeds. The remote is easy to use as far as remotes go. I have not tried the HDMI hookup yet but am anxcious to see how the 1080 upconvert works. I am using it on a 37" flat panel tv right now but I can see no problem hooking it up to a much larger one. Great picture and worth the money. The only problem is it's slow loading a disc but what's a few seconds.

I bought this to replace my old dvd player that played different recorded types of dvds and cds. The upconversion was an added bonus since I just bought a high definition tv. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the picture. It's very nice and the sound is great too. I love being able to record right off the tv (cable) on the fly, just like I did back when I had a vcr. The results are great too. Some other reviewers had problems with dvd types, but I only use DVD+R so it works out for what I need it for.

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this DVD Recorder. When I first got it, I wasn't sure how to hook it up to my directv satellite DVR box and my TV, so I called the Customer Service number and they walked me thru the steps in no time at all! I instantly began burning off of my TV or off of the my Directv DVR and it works GREAT!!! I have 3 different DVD players in my house and after I finalized my discs they worked great in each of them. I originally bought the Recorder to record disney shows or nickjr shows for my 3 yr old to watch, and so far I have tons of great movies for him to watch without having to buy them at walmart. This is a great product and the picture quality is excellent on my tvs, and I don't even have the HD hooked up yet so I am ecstatic about it!! Thanks, I hope this helped someone!! :-)

first of all, i only use this as a simple dvd player. i dont have an elaborate tv set up, i have a 40' 1080p 120hz samsung i use in my dorm room. i got this unit for its upconversion qualities. in anycase it makes my regular dvds look better then they would on a regular dvd player. the unit makes noise when it loads a dvd but is very quiet when it is playing. that is all i use the unit for, and for that, i am happy with the product and what i spent for it.
