Good balance of price, performance and design

I have owned a Toshiba in the past as well as an Acer, HP and currently a Macbook Pro, and i can say with confidence that when it comes to hardware quality Toshiba is 2nd on my list only after the Mac. Having said that though the actual build quality is not as i expected from toshiba (but still better than most HPs ) the new Acer line up has way better build quality. Overall in terms of price, quality and performance Toshiba was just a tad better for me, that also comes from the fact i like the styling better than most others. Bottom line good value for the price , but do check out the Acers before you make up your mind.

Awesome computer with minor set back

    Posted .

I bought this computer and once I plugged in my headphone speaker jack to connect it to my bose speaker the sound quality was terrible. It was high pitched and mostly treble. No base or acoustics were coming out of the speaker. I tried a different cord for head phones and it was the same issue. I tried the two cords in my other music playing devices and they sounded fine. But once I plugged back in to the new laptob it was back to the bad sound. I'm not sure if this is because they combined the microphone and headphone jacks into one or if I got a dud. I took it back and got aother one and it was the same way. Either I recieved two duds or the headphone speaker jack is not up to standard. Otherwise the computer is great. It is fast, fluid, and easy to use. Great picture on the screen. I really like toshiba laptops. I'm hoping there is a cord out there for it or I just happened to get 2 duds. I really like my music and need that to function properly for me to keep it.

    Very Well Built Notebook

    Posted .

I purchased this computer about a month ago to replace a 4 year old Dell with a first generation Intel Core i3. I was attracted to this computer based upon its specs (I am a computer person, build my own desktops) and value for money. This honestly is the closest you are going to get to a MacBook Pro in a Windows PC. Windows 8.1 is great once you get used to it, but it will be a curve in the beginning from Windows 7 or XP. My one complaint about this computer was the slow hard drive. Hard drives don't do computers justice at all. I ended up putting a Samsung SSD in the machine, and the speed benefits are well worth the extra money. The battery life went up, and the speed is insane. If you are looking for a well built laptop that is very portable and fast, look no further. Highly recommend upgrading to a solid state drive.

Nice Computer, Fan is a bit loud though

    Posted .

This is the second Toshiba I have owned, This is a really nice system but the fan is high pitched. If you don't mind this, the system is really nice, they keyboard is comfortable and the touch screen adds a nice touch. Although I have averaged about 5 hours of battery life, which is fairly good from my perspective. Overall a nice sleek ultra book system. I don't think you could do better for the price.

Still not excited about Windows 8

There are several things about this computer that make it desirable, including the size, the weight, the lighted keyboard, which also seems easier to type on than the previous Toshiba I owned. There are some things that aren't so great though. The sound is kind of 'tinny' even when connected to my desktop speakers. I really don't like the built in keypad. It seems stiff and hard to navigate. Fortunately, I always attach a wireless mouse, so this doesn't generally have much effect on the use of the computer. I wish it had at least one more usb port.

    Would buy this computer again

I'm a senior who wants a decent computer but doesn't need all the extras for gaming, etc. this computer is fairly basic, but super fast. From the time I turn it on to when I am able to use the programs is 8 seconds! It comes wih Windows 8.1 and that put be behind the learning curve, but a book on using the program conquered those problems. I purchased a separate CD/DVD drive to burn files and/or watch DVD's. I would certainly purchase his brand and model again if I had to do it over.

This is a wonderful laptop, capable of many jobs.

This is a wonderful laptop, capable of so many different "Jobs." I love the touchscreen and keypad. It's very modern and "adjusts" to different users and how they prefer to use a laptop. It easily syncs with my printer, phone, and attached DVD player. I didn't think I would like a computer w/o the CD/DVD player, but it makes it so much lighter and I don't use the CD/DVD player as much as I thought I would. The screen tends to get a lot of fingerprints, not sure how to clean it yet. The power cord sometimes becomes disconnected easily, so I need to watch that. I'm glad I purchased Geek Squad. Purchase of Office for home and student is a must.

    A poor man's ultrabook

    Posted .

I finally decided to dump my 6-year-old Gateway core-2-duo. Not that it broke down. Quite the contrary, it still works great. But it's just too heavy to carry around. I don't carry my laptop around a lot. But when I do I still would like to avoid the heavy lifting. So my goals were quite clear - something light and fast. I've been looking around way before Black Fri 2013. I was very close to buying a refurbished Acer M5-481. Then I saw this Toshiba. With the specs and $ 100 discount I had little hesitation. It has the latest i5 4th gen chip. What a deal! I'm not a love at first sight, impulse-driven buyer. I was glad that this Toshiba was available at a local BB. So I could take a look and get a feel of it. My company gave me a limited budget. But even when I had to pay an additional $ 100 out of my own pocket I don't have any regret buying this laptop. Btw, this is my first Toshiba. The older generation of Toshiba had the touch pad skewed too much to one side, which in my opinion is very unnatural. But this Toshiba has the touch pad moved more toward the center, which most laptops do. I know Win 8 is something most people love to hate. I am far from a technie and am still learning how to make the best of it. My IT brother keeps telling me that I don't need a touch screen laptop to operate Win 8. I completely disagreed with him. Nowadays you have touch screen smart phones and tablets, so why not laptops too? Minutes after I started the activation process I found myself using the touch screen quite naturally and often. It is so much easier to scroll the page up and down with a swipe and choose an option with a finger tab on the screen. To aid my poor eye-sight I can simply pinch and magnify the fonts and pictures. I love it! The back-lit keyboard may not be that useful to me but it's a cool thing to show off. The ventilation fan is a whole lot quieter than my hand-drier grade Gateway. Most of the time I don't quite hear the fan at all. The lid and the wrist-rest area are made of aluminum, and it is quite chilly to lay my wrist to type on a cold winter morning. Talking about the keyboard it is "crisp" and very responsible. This Toshiba is quite slim and light. I would love to have something as sexy as the Acer Aspire S7, but even a refurbished model is beyond my budget! Yes, it doesn't come with a built-in DVD burner. But for a old-style person like me I bought the external Samsung DVD burner I recommended at a cheap price. (It is basic DVD drive that gets the job done.) After using this Toshiba for about a month (web, general Office docs and watched a movie) I don't have anything negative to say about it but just this: for some reason I often found it awoke from sleep when I use it first thing in the morning. I will call Toshiba to get it resolve. But I don't think it is something hard to fix.

Great ultra book for the money.

    |
    Posted .

The case is lightweight and it's great to have a keyboard that is back-lit . The responsiveness of the screen is good - easy to swipe and pinch to zoom. I don't expect to place a lot of demand upon the system, since I'll mainly use the product for blogging and light business; but the system certainly seems capable of handling much more.

Good speed, sound & screen. Glossy keys.

Great system. It is plenty fast for running all Microsoft Office products while having more than ten Internet screen tabs open simultaneously. Screen display is bright enough for use in bright sunlight conditions, and the touchscreen capability allows you to take full advantage of Windows 8.1 features. Touchpad works well and is large enough to enable full use of touchscreen gestures. The14 inch screen size is large enough, but yet the laptop is still light enough to make it easy to carry around. The only thing I've found that I don't like is the glossy finish of the keys.

    Great laptop at sale price

    Posted .

This is a nice laptop. I really like the design and overall look of the laptop. I'm kinda neutral about the keyboard because while it is really nice, it has slippery keys. I'm getting used to this so this isn't really an issue anymore. The touchpad is a bit annoying though. It's really sensitive and it doesn't have tactile mousepad buttons, instead it uses the "faux" Macbook design with no buttons that I'm seeing on a lot of new PC ultrabooks. I'm also getting used to this, but the mousepad could have been a bit better. It has really good battery life and I haven't experienced many issues. I was considering this or the Lenovo u430 touch. This laptop was on sale for $599 and was cheaper so I bought this one. As I'm writing this review, the price of this laptop is $699 which is $20 more than the Lenovo. While this laptop has more memory and hard drive space, the Lenovo has a higher resolution screen and I would suggest getting that considering the current price. Nonetheless, this is a really nice laptop and I would recommend it, but I do think the $699 price tag is a bit high.

This is the 6th unit we have purchased of this laptop. Our staff uses it for point of use entries into our electronic health record. It is light weight and durable, compact yet has a decent screen size and resolution for viewing. The touch screen is really helpful when scrolling. The only downside we have found so far is that the battery doesn't last a full day so needs to dock for recharging at lunchtime and is not replaceable by users.

This laptop has changed my whole perspective on life. It's crystal clear graphics have brought tears to my eyes, the clarity of the harmon kardon sound system brings the concert right to my ear holes. Never have I felt this connection with an electronic device, let alone any human being. With that said...I'd say this laptop is pretty much the love of my life. My soulmate. I can't wait to fill all 750 GB with our memories.

    serves a purpose

    Posted .

This is a basic model with some up-to-date features. It takes a short while to adjust to Windows 8, but so far, no problems. My only complaint is that, as a laptop, it's not very good on my lap. If I want to type something, it keeps switching between modes. The background apps are always updating themselves, so if I leave it uncharged, it will quickly drain the battery. Overall, it's an adequate machine for one that I replaced, because I dropped my old one.

    Good general-purpose computer

    |
    Posted .

I bought this computer because I needed something portable with decent performance (could handle browsing, a few Office programs running simo) that also had good battery life (7hrs +). I have a Toshiba Satellite that is larger and several years old, that has been and is still my workhorse - but it has a power brick the size of a brick and is big. Not something you want to lug through Airport security or carry around for a day at a FIRST robotics event. This computer has performed admirably - and Win8 is almost tolerable thanks to the touchscreen.

This computer is light weight and easy to navigate through the settings. I did get the computer expecting it to work well for my online courses but found it challenging to view some course work. Aside from that everything about the computer is great, it all works how it is supposed to and I would definitely buy it again.

This laptop is great for school or pleasure I have really enjoyed it. It's a Big Bang for your buck. The touchscreen is a huge plus that sells me. Although I have had a few problems with the mouse icon but nothing to serious. It's fast effective and gets the job done with style. The outter case is very nice to look at.

I purchase 6 weeks ago.Everything don't have problem, lucky for me.But BIOS can't Detect SSD in Defualt Setting. If replace SSD do this: 1-Choose SSD 0.28"(7mm).If over height, won't fit Hard Disk Tray. 2-In BIOS=>Power Management=>Sata Interface Setting.Choose:Battery Life(let HDD/SSD work with battery life mode.If this setting is selected. This cause performance down.It is enough for me.Call Toshiba Support they don't have solution for this issue.Post in Forum is not response. So disappointed to Toshiba.I have had several laptops from different brands, no one has problem with SSD. ATTN: Replace SSD maybe VOID WARRANTY.

    Excellent laptop for the price

    Posted .

There is no such a thing as a perfect laptop, they all have problems. This laptop has the least issues important to me. What I like: 1. It has excellent speakers 2. Keyboard is great 3. Good price 4. Nice display 5. Enough Memory 6. More hard drive space than most laptops: 750 G. 7. Average camera. It is not great, but better than other laptops. I can live with it. My Dell laptop camera was useless. What I do not like: 1. AC cord sticks out on the left, taking 2 to 3 inches of space. It should be on the back and not so thick. 2. Touch pad is not easy to work with. The surface is not smooth, and some important options in the setting are not available. So you can NOT fully customize the touch pad like before. 3. The clicking sound of right and left buttons on the touch pad drives me crazy. Why is it so loud?

    A great home computer

This computer has been a good purchase. In fact, I was going to return it because it lacks a VGA input (which I need for work). I liked its speed, battery life and size so much, however, that I decided to keep it for my daughter and get myself a different computer that I can use at work. I am very impressed with and highly recommend this laptop.
