Great Computer for an Even Better Price!

    |
    Posted .

Let me start by saying that this is my first non Sony Vaio laptop. I usually spend more money on higher end technology, but for the first time I was really on a budget making a significant computer purchase. There were several Acers in the running with this Satellite (as well as another) as far as price and specs went. At the end of the day, pound for pound this was the one that had the most bang for the buck! I must admit, I wasn't sure what I'd get when I fired it up. Since the moment I did, this laptop has been pretty freaking awesome! If you're a gamer or use high end graphics, this computer isn't for you. But for everyone else, particularly students on a budget...this IS the affordable, reliable, high-quality, lightweight, and aesthetically pleasing machine you are looking for. Seriously. At the risk of sounding cliche...this is truly a BEST BUY!!

    DOA

    Posted .

I bought this laptop for my daughter so that it would be here in time for me to give to her while she's home from nursing school. Her old laptop, which she'd been awarded by her high school, was a dinosaur. We charged the system up, turned it on and DOA!!! The screen appears to have been cracked would be my guess, as it appears to have a large burn spot on the screen, with the rest of the screen complete garbage. No new laptop for my daughter for a while. Thanks for ruining my surprise gift for my daughter Best Buy and Toshiba. I won't be using either to replace this unit.

    Near Perfect Midrange Hardware

    Posted .

The case is a solid black looks beautiful.Could have been different colors however.5 The memory being 6GB is standard. That is good considering this uses onboard graphics.Great use of system resources.However.This does not allow you to adjust how much memory you want to allocate to use for your video. The BIOS is not great. But still very useable.5 Sound quality is Excellent. You can hook up Surround sound speakers an get full audio an DTS sound.Very important 5 Resolution being 1600x900p Excellent! That is what i want. That or 1920x1080p.Close Enough! 5 CON: The OS or Operating System. Is a complete frailer! it was unresponsive an out right refused to do what i the user demanded of it.Not that it could not.IT REFUSED!!It said NO! I WONT do that! Then asked can this share my personal information with companies.NO!Can we send your information to advertisers?NO!The system will not even start up unless you give them your Email address. Here is the problem with that.Your Email is connected to your Location, phone number, mailing address and where on the map you are located. Not to mention your games personal and private account information that business find you and send you alerts comes from there.Anyone can hack or steal your email account.Having your email as the ONLY WAY to log into Windows 8.1 is the single worst possible form of security. It gets even worse about Windows 8.1.I disable Windows updates,Security Center and Windows Defender. Why?Because they turn themselves on an start installing things into my system that causes crashes mouse freezes,Jittery mouse movements an so on.They are the main reason i do not like Windows at all.Windows 8.1 REFUSES to allow any change to these functions!Says NO! You may not change or disable spyware. You may not change what you payed for.So to that.I tried to uninstall it by installing a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD.It says I go into changes updates an to DvD player.Yes i literally had to find the function to run DvDs other wise it would not run them. Then when i get there. It says " OK restart your computer an I will run the DvD. " It restarts . . . . . . It did not run the DvD. . . . . I have NEVER run into a more user HOSTILE Operating System in my entire life! What good is a OS if it wont let you do anything on it?!So i had to use my other computer to check YouTube videos on how to get a DvD TO JUST OPERATE on a Windows 8.1. Apparently you go through a lot of trouble. Then i removed it get this.By tapping F2+FN at the same time.An had to disable some functions in BIOS just to have control over the computer.See YouTube for details. Now Because of the Operating system i would give this system 0 Stars out of 5.Literally You Should be paying ME to use this OS!There is NOTHING Attractive about it!NOTHING! There is the average. Then there is the Below average. Then there is Negative. That is THIS Operating System. This system was $399.99.For the OS alone. This system should be $149.99.This is a Honest Review.NOTHING Would have been better than this.It took hours to get into the BIOS once in Linux i was able to see what was going on.It had 5 Partitions on one drive. One for Media one for Recovery (Yes No recovery DvD Way to go!You lost points for that Well no.)Another one for Services. Then you. Then a blank one Which give direct data to the NSA of what your doing.Well isn't that a invasion of privacy. The OS to be removed immediately. After that With Windows 7. AMAZING performance Smooth performance in games and with Video rendering.Near Perfect Build I would Highly recommend this Hardware.... Not the software. But definitely the Hardware! I Would recommend this to a friend or user IF you have a completely different Operating System.Never give out your Email to Anyone!

    Excellent Laptop for the Money

    Posted .

The Toshiba 17.3 laptop is an excellent buy for the money and I am very pleased with it with a few minor exceptions. First, I found that the shift key will not work unless you hold it down. Second, as someone already mentioned, the speakers leave a lot to be desired. I played a movie DVD on it and, I could not hear the dialogue. I used some cheap external speakers and the sound was still low even with the speakers turned way up. Also, the computer internal voice is a little disconcerting and I had to turn it off because it is very distracting. However, I do believe that, for the money, the laptop is an excellent buy and operates fairly fast. It takes a little bit of time to get everything set up but, once that is done, everything seems to work fine. I am a writer and I needed a laptop to take with me on my signing tours. This laptop fills the bill adequately. This is my second Toshiba and I have been satisfied with both of them.

    Lemon speakers?

    Posted .

Ok, so I buy this Toshiba Satellite17.3 Laptop. AMD A-8 Series with 6GB Mem. and 750 GB Hard Dr. Everything on it works wonderfully EXCEPT the speakers. I said no to recommend to friends only until I find out if all of these are the same or just this laptop in particular. Very strange, music sounds great when I plug into external speakers or even the TV. But, when it comes to the voice you cannot hear it. No matter how loud you put them. I am hoping only a speaker issue with this laptop not all of this make and model. Bringing this back, will try another of the same model but will be checked before I leave the store.. To be cont......

    Good for the price

    Posted .

Overall this is a good computer. The integrated speakers are not the best, but at home I use it with speakers, and with a headphone while travelling, so it doesn't bother me at all. It comes with Windows 8.1 and it is not the best, but if you pick the personal setup while setting up your windows, you can turn off all the useless features, and only allow the important updates, which helps. The only reason I dont give 5 stars, is the noise the HDD makes. It is normal after 1 year of usage but it is not righ after unboxing the laptop. It also runs some games I like, which I didn't really expect because of the processor. (World of Warcraft runs on Ultra quality, World of Tanks runs on low) The touchpad and the keyboard feels really nice, and the picture what the display provides, is beautiful. Overall I am really satisfied.

    Good laptop for the price!

I purchased this laptop due to price/performance point. The screen on this laptop is HUGE. Very nice, vibrant colors. Boots up pretty quickly and can run most applications and games (if you're a gamer like I am). A couple drawbacks though - actual performance could be a little better. It does take a little while to load certain applications and games, but once they're loaded things run relatively seamless. You WILL need to adjust the color/screen options when you first use it. Blacks were washed out, colors were too bright, etc. but nothing that some tweaking fixed. Overall - a good laptop for the price/performance.

    Solid Midrange Laptop

    Posted .

I am by no means a "techy", and this laptop was easy to set-up right out of the box. With 6GB memory and 750GB hard drive, this laptop competes with others that go for almost twice the price. There are no bells or whistles on this laptop (i.e., backlit keyboard) and it comes with Windows 8.1 (not impressed with the Microsoft upgrade). But it has a clear screen and a nice, full-size keyboard; it's not too heavy and powers-up quickly. As I'm sure most will mention, the internal speakers on this model are less than adequate; you have the option to connect external if you wish. All-in-all, extremely satisfied with this Toshiba and its performance!

Good computer that can do everything you need.

This computer is a great deal for the price. I didn't want or need top of the line, just something to get the job done at a reasonable price. This is it. A good buy for anyone doing work, or school work on computer daily with a few games and it runs great. Only gave 4 stars because windows 8 can be difficult to use until you get familiar with it. Might want to get 15.6" screen if you need it be compact but I mainly keep it at home.

Starts up fast, no sound problems on this one. Good processor speed for web surfing, email, and running Office. Lots of pop up ads that you can easily get rid of with a pop up blocker. Don't like the fact that Windows 8 needs your microsoft mail account to log in. Big screen great for reading.

Bought this for temporarily working from home for a few months. Screen is gigantic. You won't find this much memory in another laptop wit this screen size and at this cost. If it had a fancier case it would probably cost 300 dollars more. If you don't care about looks this is a great laptop. As for sound, there's no value priced laptop that's going to have good sound, buy some cheap speakers if it's that big a deal.

    Surprising good workhorse

    Posted .

My main laptop gave out, and I needed a quick replacement, until I could afford "a good quality" laptop. ie, I was intending this to be a 'tide me over" laptop, but it has turned out to a 1st quality, major workhorse laptop. Best incidental purchase I've made in a long time. It's fast, has plenty of storage space, and goes through all the paces, I put on it without a hiccup. . Great little machine, and the price is very unbelievable for such a workhorse machine......You won't go wrong.

I couldn't beat the price. I use a laptop as my primary PC at home, and I mostly use for web browsing and email. Because it's my primary, I prefer the larger screen. It was also important to me that I could put in a DVD. It seems like the mouse tracker has already stopped working, but I always plug in a mouse anyway. I had lot of trouble with the Windows 8 start screen and the apps. I finally gave up trouble shooting, and I just work with the traditional desktop, and it seems fine. It's very lightweight, so I wouldn't mind traveling with it, even though it is 17 inches.

I needed a new laptop and this model is nice looking and easy to use. The new format takes getting used to windows instead of icons. It definitely has more features than my old laptop and I'm still finding new functions.

The laptop runs well and can plays games like swtor and sims 3 in decent graphic setting without a problem. Only negative is that it won't stay in sleep mode and when I open the lid I will have to hard boot to get the screen on. I have alot of posts on toshiba site of the same problem. My fix is to just shut it down. I returned the first one and the second one did the same thing.
