    Great starter laptop for kids!

    Posted .

After searching hours among hours on Bestbuy.com I went into my local store looking for a laptop for my daughter as a birthday present that will be turning 7 years old. I walked around checking the hinges on most of the laptops, along with the keyboards, etc.. Most seem they would break with a young child at the helm. I happened to glance over and this laptop caught my eye just by the color scheme. So I walked over and checked it out and found it it was designed just for kids! Spill proof keyboard, very active hard drive sensor, stiffer hinges on the flip open display, more "weather" proof casing. Laptop has all the features of any other laptop in the price range with the added safety feathers. Best part, she loves it! It's a win / win if you are searching for a laptop for a child 13 years or younger. * This is my 4th Toshiba laptop purchase and still very pleased with them!

Not just for kids! This machine screams!

A agree with most of 'Shawn183' remarks, but would add that this is a great notebook for kids AND adults. I did some research on this model and it is actually a Satellite PRO in a Euro designed casing. It has a Dual-Core Celeron w/3 mg cache (putting it above the Pentium Dual Core). The bench testing I did showed impressive scores. I did put in a larger hard drive (after I made the recovery software), and bumped the RAM to 4 gig. This is NOW my new travel computer as it is fast, efficient, sturdy, and fingerprint-proof. It has great software to protect kids from internet garbage, and some good games. But, if you are a grown-up and you want a heavy-duty laptop without paying for a Panasonic Toughbook, then you should give this a look. It has features that will cost you almost double the price on other brands. Also, BestBuy is $250 less than any other retailer selling this item. They are simply the BEST place to purchase a notebook. Enough Said!

    Expensive for not a lot

It's great for what it offers, 2 dvds, 1 game, the free software they bundle like Kidzui. There is a pay option for Kidzui, which is what this include, not much of a difference. The cpu is subpar for the price, the amount of ram is really low, and the graphic adapter isn't all that great. Technically, you could buy a better laptop from bestbuy for like $429, add each of the movies ($15 a piece), the game ($20), be at $479 then use the free version of Kidzui and even use Windows 7 to block programs and set time limits, use K9 (free) to block sites - and even get a free antivirus like Comodo (complete internet suite for free), Avira (great detection rate and fast (free)), Avast! (lots of protective shields, and free), or Microsoft Security Essentials (free and updates through Windows Update).

for working professionsals on the go!

I am a professional in the medical imaging processing field. I travel alot, and I wanted light, cheap, and something that could process the massive datasets i work with. Two months in and I am very happy with this laptop. The wipeable keyboard is wonderful and fun to type on. This laptop was a big hit in the CS department of my university and most commented that all laptops should have this keybaord. The fingerproof shell has the added benefit of being easier to grip, making it more secure when moving around. I upgraded to 8GB ram and have no problems handling the big data sets despite the mediocre processor. I was tempted to give four stars because, like others, i have minor probelms with the sound. Its quiet so i have to use external speakers if watching a movie on it with friends, and occasionally makes a 'zzz' noise if disturbed. I love this laptop and think its benefits (13", wipeable keyboard, light, slots for 8GB ram) outweigh what i would gain going for another laptop of similar size ( at least 14") and price ($400) but with a slightly better processor.

    Even Great for Adults

    Posted .

I had seen from other reviews from adult owners that this computer was also just as nice to use for the adult oriented. They are correct in this assumption. I purchased this for myself and un-installed Net Nanny as soon as I reached home. This laptop is fully functional. I download music on my iTunes, watch Netflix, skype, store/print work documents, and save pictures. Easy to carry and lightweight, perfect for me as I was searching for a smaller screen laptop at an amazing price. Best part has to be when my nephews visit, they use the kid features that came pre-installed. Also a plus, when my sister-in-law's kid uses his grimmy and dirty little hands to play games on this laptop, easily wipeable. Yes, I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone, but specifically for someone who has to share a laptop with a child and only want one computer in the household. Adult and/or kid friendly.

    Great everyday laptop!

    Posted .

This laptop is phenomenal for $399. I bought it to take to work with me everyday because it was lighter to carry than most with a nice size screen and keyboard. I am a very avid user and collector of computers, and have had many expensive machines. At this price, this laptop is amazing. It is fast, runs quiet and is able to multitask. It also has good video quality as it runs the preloaded Batman game with ease. You can easily remove unnecessary programs like Net Nanny! She did not get in my way. The machine is also built well and I had no issues with set up. Asthetically, I also think that it looks very cool and the keyboard has a great feel. People waste more money on netbooks, which are far less superior than this machine. This laptop is made for everyone, not just kids...great buy!

4 year old can work it

    Posted .

This laptop was bought to replace a Netbook my husband's parents bought our 4 year old(which I think is crazy, but we went with it). It's a great kid's computer. One of the best features is that it's really made to protect your purchase. The non-skid bottom and rubber corners are great at minimizing damage. It has a spill protection keypad that you can take off and clean all in one piece, and the memory automatically protects itself when the computer is jostled. My son absolutely loves the Batman Lego game that came installed on the comp and can play it by himself. We did get a wireless mouse because it's just easier than using a touchpad mouse. The learning games we have for him work well on it as well. Over all this is a really great kid's comp that I think will last quite some time!

    for college and personal use

    Posted .

I bought this mainly becuase of the size and portability. I am able to run several programs at once with no problems, and Civilization 5 runs smoothly on it. I addd 2 gb of RAM,but shipping took about a week and i think most people would be ok without the extra Ram if you stuck to basic games, email, and online streaming. I use this for college as well as personal entertainment. The thing I am most surprised about is how cool it runs, I have not had to use a laptop cooler in the month or so I have had it. I would reccoment this to students and users who want a decent laptop at a good price that is also environmentall freindly( lower wattage processor, the battery uses less cadmium, less packaging, ect). Overall i would reccomend this to most people I know The only con is the battery, but you can't expect perfection for this price.

    Not Bad

    Posted .

I bought this for my daughter to learn on, I love the keyboard (all laptops need the wipe able keyboard), and she loves the kid friendly browser. I got the deal with the backpack, free mouse, free game, and two movies. The price was still a little high but not crazy. The laptop runs smooth and loads fairly quickly, the image on the web cam is horrible and the net nanny is annoying. I get the premise of net nanny but it overrides alot of stuff and becomes a pain. Overall a good package but not a fan of the Net Nanny.

    NIce value after some modifications

    Posted .

I needed a small laptop for when I travel. Nothing fancy just something small and easy to get around with. I'm not using it for gaming or high end business stuff. Just something that's easy to travel with. I wanted a small screen and sadly there aren't alot of options out there unless you want to spend $1000, which I didn't. This laptop fit the bill. The speakers suck ALOT but not a real big deal when you use headphone or buy a pair of small travel speakers. I upped the physical memory from 2gigs to 6gigs and I removed all the child friendly programs and software. This made the laptop super fast for my needs. So far I'm very pleased. Not a great high end laptop but I didn't need a high end laptop. Don't expect to this laptop to replace a high end model. You will be disappointed. If you want something just to knock around with, this is one does the trick.

Good kids laptop if they know what they're doing

    Posted .

I've read some of the reviews that put this unit down, not sure where they are based. I've been in technology for 17 years, from engineer to running large data centers. This unit is perfect, especially for kids. If you are looking for a high end gaming machine or speeding laptop and think you are going to get it for $499, then you are mis-informed. But for kids, it is preloaded for what you need. It has plenty of memory, drive space and processor speed to surf the internet and use most typical programs an 8-13 year old would use. The only thing I would recommend is picking up a wireless mouse if you have a child that has not used a touchpad.

    Good laptop & reliable overall

    Posted .

I love the design of this laptop; the wipeable keyboard is great, and it's a very light weight overall but doesn't lose any of the bells & whistles. 3 USB ports, plus an SD port (awesome!) so we don't have to plug our camera into the computer to organize & transfer photos. The screen is crystal clear, and we have enjoyed watching videos through Netflix and the DVD drive with excellent resolution. For some reason, our wireless internet connection is spotty when the unit is not plugged in but on battery power only. As soon as the power cord is connected, the internet connection is great once again. A little frustrating, though, that it has to be plugged in to work.

An average laptop with a few negatives

    Posted .

My wife and I bought this for our youngest son so he could use it for school work and to video chat with his grandparents in Florida. It's an OK laptop although the keyboard takes a little getting used to. The rubbery feel, for some reason, simply leaves a touch typist second guessing. Not sure why. At least it should help from crumbs and spills ruining the laptop. Of the included software, I was particularly annoyed with NetNanny. It is forced upon you (I prefer K9, which is free and just as effective). Netnanny seems to require complete installation before you can do much of anything (it will nag you until you do), including uninstalling it. When I did finally get it uninstalled, it complained about not being able to find a file and then trashed the internet connection which led to the problem of having to reinstall all the system from my recovery DVD. Oh yes, DO make Recovery DVDs before you do ANYTHING with this laptop - Toshiba even recommends it in the quick start guide. Be warned, there are no system restoration CDs included (I suppose that's how Toshiba keeps the price so low). It took 5 DVDs to make a system recovery set for this laptop. It takes a long time to make them --- even longer to restore the basic system from them. Yes, I would recommend this to a friend but with the warnings I have stated.

    Great deal for the $

    Posted .

Overall, i am very happy with this computer. I needed a small laptop that is easy to travel with. I use mostly for writing and surfing. I upgraded the RAM on my own, and it made a big difference, but it was acceptable before the upgrade. Only two drawbacks: the speakers are really, really bad. Not even usable. And the SW to protect the kids on the internet should be made as an option, not a default feature. it was very hard to remove it, and it took 5 emails and 2 calls to the SW maker. Once I got rid of that SW, the computer has worked very well. I certainly recomend it.

    Great for kids

    Posted .

Bought 2 of them for christmas. The laptop is sturdy and well designed. We've already had a nice spill on the keyboard and the cleanup was easy. I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of Net Nanny for a kid software tool. I expected it to be more transparent. But it comes up for an update nearly every day and so having it record in the background is totally out. Overall, perfect computer for its design age group.

    Not just for kids

    Posted .

I travel in my business and lugging around a 17" computer was getting to be a hassel. I loved the size, the power for the size, the built in camera and the price! It's light weight, easy to use on a plane (it actually fits on the seat back tray) and will do everything I need. I was especially drawn to it's ruggedness and the wipeable keyboard because of the potential damage of travel. I've heard better speakers, but really, isn't that what earphones are for? This is the best hybrid between a full sized laptop and a net book. Don't even think this is a kids toy.

    AWESOME LITTLE MACHINE!!

    Posted .

I recently purchased aToshiba Satellite Laptop 13.3" for my partner (who is extremely clumsy, mind you) and it is amazing! The first day she had it she spilled salsa on it while Skyping...:/ It cleaned up with no problems! The keyboard has a wipeable cover! The "Great Salsa Spill of 2011" was nothing more than a mild inconvenience that involved a damp sponge and a dry paper towel. The next testament to it's durability is our outrageous number of cats who LOVE to play with cords and pull things down off of high places. One of the cats decided to pull this machine down of the pub table in our kitchen on to the ceramic tile floor. It's still in one piece and didn't even turn off! It was still on her facebook window! The moral of the story is this...if you have clumsey kids, pets, partners, spouses, friends, roommates, parents, neighbors, or anyone that is going to be around your home, this laptop is amazingly durable. Not to mentiont it's a fast machice and perfect for doing most anything, even watching movies! The only downside is that it's not very loud, but you can always hook up speakers to it, which is what we do for moveis.

    Good for kids 10-16 yrs

My 6 yr old has a hard time figuring out how to use some of the components. But it has enough speed for my older child. May not be fast enough for major gaming.

    My Son Loves It!

    Posted .

I bought this for my 7 year old son for Christmas. He really enjoys using it and feels like he has the independence. The kids browser is user friendly and emails the parent what sites their child has been to on a weekly basis. The browser also will not let the child access sites that are inappropriate. I would recommend this to any parent seeking a creative outlet for their child.

    Great Laptop for the price

    Posted .

This is laptop is performing as advertised. It is mainly geared for kids and there is some parental software that has to be removed or configured before you can use the internet. The battery life is good and the overall performance is good. The laptop would greatly benifit from some extra memory, and according to the Toshiba website this model has an empty slot.
