    DISASTER CLASSIC

Your typical dumb disaster flick, produced by the king of the genre, Irwin Allen, made notable by the presence of Steve McQueen and Paul Newman who finally agreed to share the screen as equals, something they almost did in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." The ever-competitive McQueen made his film debut with a bit part in "Somebody Up There Likes Me" in which Newman starred, and one of his ambitions was to finally get top billing over his number one rival. Even with the so-called "diagonal billing" employed in the film and its advertising (with Newman's name elevated slightly above McQueen's), those of us who read from left to right can see that McQueen got his wish. He also got the best role. He's the firefighter, a tight jawed man of action, while Newman is saddled with the less sympathetic role of the architect. But the real star is the burning building. It burns, and impressively at that, but there's something very claustrophobic about this situation which results in less action than Allen's previous smash, "The Poseidon Adventure." But the acting is better. In addition to McQueen and Newman, the cast includes Richard Chamberlain (particularly good), William Holden, Faye Dunaway, and Fred Astaire. That's an improvement over Carol Lynley and Eric Shea, both of whom Gene Hackman had the misfortune of emoting with two years earlier. Whatever one thinks of this particular genre, "The Towering Inferno" is probably the best of the buncH.

Anyone who's a fan of disaster movies or Steve McQueen should have this in their collection! The Towering Inferno follows an all star ensemble cast as they deal with a massive fire at the debut of the most advanced skyscraper yet. There's lots of thrills, daring escapes and unexpected deaths in this film. You get get the feeling that nobody really is safe from the fire or the building. Also and excellent film score by a John Williams young in his career. For $5, getting this film in Blu Ray with all the bonus feature goodies is hard to beat!

Best of the 70's Disaster Films

This is an excellent Irwin Allen movie. Yes, there is some over the top scenes and over acting by some of the cast and probably too many side stories. It can come across as a little cheesy at times. It helps that John Williams scored this film. That alone helps any film. His score for Jaws 2 made that a much better film. Paul Newman and Steve McQueen performances are top notch and help drive the film. The special effects hold up pretty good today. Never dull for 2 hours, 45 minutes.

From the The Poseidon Adventure to Earthquake, disaster movies were all the rage in the '70s. And thanks to this awesome blu-ray I can re-watch my personal favorite - The Towering Inferno. The all-star cast, the harrowing action, the dazzling special effects are looking better than ever thanks to this incredible blu-ray release. The bonus features really make this one a must-have edition that I couldn't wait to add to my collection. Such a great movie!

Towering Inferno is another of the 70's epic disaster movies that showcase a huge problem that needs to be handled by a legion of the era's big name stars. The plot in this film unfolds at the dedication of a new skyscraper built by hidden corruption. A massive fire breaks out that brings every rescue and relief organization into play to try to save the hundreds of lives of the people inside and out. Great thrills and excitement!

There is something about older movies that are so simplistic at times. When directors didn't have to rely on special effects and had to focus on the actual story movies sometimes came out better. The Towering Inferno is a prime example. This debuted more than 10 years before I was even born but I was captivated by it. I truly recommend watching it if you have never seen it.

I saw this movie on TV a few times on TV long time ago and wanted to see it in full without the editing and cuts. I fully enjoyed this movie despite the length of 2 hours and 45 minutes. If you have a Saturday or Sunday afternoon with nothing to do either borrow it from the library or buy it if you could find it at a discount somewhere. I enjoyed it very much.

Most of people today would be dismissed this movie by saying "this is such old movie and CIF sucks.... Bra bra bra.... But seeing Steve Mcqueen and Paul newman, and rest of the all star casts is something new technology of CIF can not replace. This is great addition for my bluray movie collection.

There's a staggering amount of bonus features which is really nice since this movie is such a technical marvel, so being able to hear from the cast and production crew about the making movie is cool. The picture quality is great but the sound won't blow you away, it's just fine.

The Towering inferno, one of Irwin Allen's best efforts as movie Producer, actually probably his best effort considering the other Disaster film that came after in the late 70's Irwin Allen who was producer of the film also Directed some scenes aswell even thou John Guillerman was credited as Director for the film John Directed the action/Disaster scenes, Irwin Directed other scenes everytime i see this film i cannot get over the performances Great performances all round, William Holden, Steve McQueen, Paul newman, Faye dunaway, Richard chamberlain susan Blakely, Robert Vaughn and many others the new HD transfer from 20TH century fox does look incredible century fox made the effort for this film no Doubt about it the picture quality looks very sharp & clear in 2:35:1 widescreen, no Grain or Dirt plus a new 5.1 Master audio mix & 5.0 surround sound mix which make a big Difference in the sound quality plus all the special features and i mean every single extra from the 2 Disc dvd set has been carried over to this new blu-ray all the retrospect interviews have been seperated into mini featurettes that can be played together or individually duration about 2 hours worth the casting, the filming, the special effects, the editing, the sound, the music score etc mainly the production crew of the film have been interviewed thou Irwin Allen, John Guillerman died years and years ago but some of the cast from the film have also been interviewed, only some Susan blakely, Robert Vaughn, Richard chamberlain and few others Faye Dunaway is not interviewed for some reason maybe she declined William Holden died back in 1980, so did Steve McQueen, and Paul newman passed away some years ago there's also behind the scenes TV promo of the film and a TV Backstory of the Towering inferno goes for 30mins the film runs for 165 mins, there's also Deleted scenes added to this blu-ray about 30mins of them some of the scenes are interesting and some are pointless all this on 1 blu-ray Disc incredible if you love the towering inferno get the blu-ray version, sharp & clear picture quality with the blu-ray version plus over an hour's worth of extras 5 stars for the film, 5 stars for this new blu-ray

I wasn't expecting much but the bluray came through. Crisp, sharp picture and the 4.0 sound was fantastic. Also came with a lot of great featurettes on the making of the film. Worthy addition to bluray library.
