Great smart plus, but received used item

I own several TP-Link smart plugs already, bought this mini plus with Echo dot bundle during the Black Friday sales, the plug works fine out of the box, but what I have received maybe used or refurbished product. Even the box is sealed like new but there are some small scratches on the front face plate of the plug; when I try to set up the plug, the app told me it has been set up before, I need do a clean reset on this plug which also indicates this plug I have received in a sealed box is either repackaged or used. Bestbuy need look into this.

This was sold as an Alexa compatible outlet. To set it up requires another online account that then has to be linked to Alexa.... I stopped at that point as I did not want to create another online account. So, my review is lack of ease, and the need to maintain multiple accounts rather than having the devise work through the existing account.

      Hi Jimp,

For Alexa to control the smart device, and to control the device when you're away, you'll need to create a free Kasa account, which can be done using the steps outlined in our FAQ here: http://www.tp-link.com/us/faq-948.html

Once the smart device is added to your network and account you can then add the skill to Alexa as shown here: http://www.tp-link.com/en/faq-944.html

If you’d like assistance with any of these steps, please send an e-mail with your contact information and a link to this review to Kasa.Support@TP-Link.com and we'll gladly have a Support Agent follow up with you directly.

I've been using this device for a week now and I must say it isn't the best out there. 9 out 10 times the device is unavailable for even the Kasa application (TP-Link's device management software), forget it being available for my voice assistants. The only reason I haven't flipped my lid is I didn't buy it for the for full $34.99 original price. Now I know why Best Buy offered a discount on the bundle pack.

      Hi,

We always recommend ensuring your router’s Wi-Fi signal is adequately strong in the smart device’s location. Within the Kasa app there's a feature that allows you to measure Wi-Fi signal strength of your smart devices. When the app is connected, please check the signal strength in the Device Settings menu. Ideally, the reading should be >-70 dBm.

If the signal is within the ideal range and you’re still experiencing these symptoms, please ensure your Kasa app is up to date, then update your smart device’s firmware using the steps in our FAQ: http://www.tp-link.com/us/faq-1256.html

If you’d like assistance with any of these steps, please send an e-mail with your contact information and a copy of this review to Kasa.Support@TP-Link.com and we'll gladly have a Support Agent follow up with you directly.

Hard time setting up with Amazon Echo

Trying fo set it up with Amazon Echo hasn't worked yet. Kasa doesn't recognize the plug and the instructions for using the app are extremely difficult. Not a user friendly app. The model of plug that it shows on the app isn't even the model being used. It should not be this difficult to set up, especially when the manufacturer states it works with Echo.

Set up is easy and connected to my WiFi quickly. Set on and off time and it does it accurately everyday. However cannot stay connected and drops connection after a few hours. So cannot remotely turn on and off with the Kasa app. Just an expensive accurate electronic timer.

Every time I used my google home to turn on my lights this plug was never available and I gave it a try over a long weekend and I got it to work a couple of time but, it had to be physically turned on to work and that defeats the whole purpose of a smart plug and a mobile app.

I am confused as to why TP needs me to have an account with them just to be able to use Alexa voice control. The WEMO devices do not require you to have an account then give access to Alexa. I think it's ridiculous that TP also wants your information and habits.
