Expensive for a plug, but smart

This product is an example of a simple product that has limited cost effective uses. It is a single plug that uses a single existing port, so it can be used to effectively turns one plug into a "smart plug." I used this to add "smarts" to my Christmas tree lights, and I found telling Google to turn on my Christmas tree and remotely turning it on and off when away from home to be entertaining. The TP-Link products do not require a hub, and their products work with Google Home (Alexa too probably, but not tested). The app has been reliable so far, and adding the plug to its ecosystem is relatively easy. Once set up, porting the plug to Google Home was also easy, and the plug can be assigned to a room just like their wall switches. If the assigned name of the item plugged in includes "light," Google will turn this item on and off when the "turn on the lights" command is used. Unfortunately, i am not sure what uses a smart plug might have to justify the costs. It is less expensive to replace the bulb in a table lamp with a smart bulb, and the smart bulb has more options even it is not a color bulb. I have had a hard time justifying turning on a kitchen appliance remotely for safety reasons, and starting a coffee maker in the morning presumes it was set up the night before. Someone could theoretically use it to control power to systems remotely, such as powering down a TV in a child's room to control TV time at night, though even a young child would be able to quickly work around the locks by removing the plug as an interface. Overall, the plug works, but it needs to be much cheaper to be worth adding to a smart house in large quantities. A smart replacement wall duplex plug at closer to this price would be better since it would not stick out from the wall and would at least include two plugs.

Wi-fi Range extender with buildt-in Smartplug func

There are two parts to this product. It is a wireless Wi-Fi extended and it is also a smart plug. The electric plug is managed through wifi. TP-LINK Kasa App available in all the app stores allows you to remotely (not physical interaction) manage any device (on/off) attached to this plug. I setup the app in about 2 minutes. Probably 2 or 3 taps in the app is that is required, rest of the time is taken by the app to basically discover the devices, connect to them and setting up themselves to manage those devices. Really simple, intuitive and fairly quick. There is also a "scene" functionality. This is quite interesting. Basically, you can create a customs scene, say a "Movie watching" scene. In this scene you can set all light adapters to off and only one ambient light adapter to be on. So if you tap that scene, all lights turn on/off appropriately in one tap. This is pretty cool. I can only visualize the idea behind it as I had just one adapter to check the functionality. You can also set the app in away mode which will allow you to operate the plug even when you are away. For example you could turn the lights on in your house during night time when you are away to simulate presence in the house. The app also integrates with Alexa which means that Alexa can learn to use the app to manage the devices. So, you can talk to alexa which talks to Kasa and manages the devices. The second part of this device is the Wi-Fi extender. This is similar to the AC2600 Wi-Fi extender available with TP-Link. I have used this product and I can tell you that they have fixed a bunch of issues on the AC2600 with the AC1200 range extender with smart plug. I could setup the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies in one pass (the AC2600 has many issues in setup). There are quite a few controls such as a access controls that you can set regarding which devices can access the extender. However, one big con is that performance through the extender drops like a stone in water. In my house, I could get only 50% of the performance with an extender as compared to direct Wi-Fi. That is some serious performance overhead there in this device. But then, the purpose of this device is to provide better performance than a connection with just a single band of signal. The KASA app also allows you to control the extender functionality completely over the cloud when you are away from home or using local Wi-Fi when you are in. Everything works like a charm. I would recommend this product where you are looking to make your home smart and at the same time trying to get some wifi extensions going in your backyard or something like that. Submitted as part of a free sample program There is another major con. There is a significant reduction in performance when you compare to connecting to an extended vs direct Wi-Fi. In the case of the AC1200

Installation a bit tedious, but so far works well

I so far have three of these, controlled by an Amazon Echo Dot 2nd generation. Installation requires that you first download an app to your phone (called Kasa) and create an account with TP-Link. Then you connect the plug to an outlet and set your phone to use the Wi-Fi signal coming from the plug. Then you set the plug to use your own Wi-Fi connection, switch your phone back to your own Wi-Fi connection, and then you should see the plug in your list of devices under Kasa. In my experience, the Kasa application would keep asking to reconnect after this last step, but if you close and restart the app it sees the plugs fine. On the Echo Dot side, you have to add the Kasa skill and then provide access to the TP-Link account used when configuring the plug through the Kasa app. Note that when you add another TP-Link device (like another plug), or rename one you already have, you have to go back into the Alexa app and rescan for devices - they're not automatically added to Alexa even after the skill has been configured. The only other thing to note is that the plugs do make a switching sound when being turned on or off, like a light switch might do. So the plugs are not silent when changing state. Other than that, they are unobtrusive and their connectivity light only turns on when they are switched on. When they are off the light is off so no night-light effect.

    Convenient, easy setup

Greetings, I have had the pleasure of testing a new product from TP-LINK. The Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini HS105. I have to begin to say, it definitely works as designed. The setup was very simple to perform using the Kasa app. I conducted my test by connecting my Christmas tree and programing a schedule to light the tree when at home and away. This little device did a great job in performance. I appreciate the small football enabling the use of the other outlet. I further conducted a test with an array of appliances, for example, coffee maker, my bedroom light to turn on in the morning, and other devices. I tend to fall asleep with my TV on and forget to program the timer, it was limited to a short count down timer, so that did not work for me. I connected to the smart plug, programmed a schedule and it worked perfect. I would like this device to be compatible with My Home app associated with my Apple iPhone. Enabling to build a network of devices working together from my iPhone, which would provide more diversity. This review is submitted as part of a free sample program.

This item was part of a Black Friday promotion where you could purchase it for $5 when you bought an Echo Dot. It was an easy decision to buy it and dip my toe into the smart home world. Like the Echo Dot you have to download and set it up via an app, Kasa in this case. It was easy and straightforward and I also had to update the firmware afterward but that was also straightforward. You do have the ability to manually turn on and off what ever electrical device you have the plug connected to via the button on the sice. I liked the fact that you're able to set a schedule via the Kasa app. I no longer need the manual timer where the time would be off by 10-15 minutes. Would I pay the full price for this? Probably not. The only negative I have it that the plug is kind of bulky so if you're planning on plugging this into an outlet where there is furniture that is flush against the wall then I suggest moving it elsewhere.

I got 2 of these little devices to replace mechanical timers that we used to control our upstairs lights. We have them connected to our Echo Dots and through the Kasa app on our phones. They work great most of the time but, once in a while, one or the other will randomly lose its connection to the wi-fi. When this happens, I have to unplug it, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in. I’ve tried relocating them, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. According to the router diagnostics, they’re getting a strong signal from the router. They both do it so, unless I got 2 defective ones, it’s probably a design flaw. It’s annoying, but easy to fix and they’re not controlling any mission-critical devices, so I just live with it.

Picked these up for $15 each, purchased 2 and went back for 3 more after setting up the first two. Easy to do. I have a 2.5 and 5 Ghz network and just set my phone to the 2.5 while configuring them. It was very straightforward and easy. Justed the for Christmas lights, probably will only use 2 or 3 the other time of the year. Setup a skill with Alexia to turn on and off "Christmas". Would recommend. They do make a clicking sound when turning on and off and sometimes runs a little slow with Alexia. Some reviews noted a high pitch buzzing, I had one doing it, I couldn't hear it but both my wife and daughter did, they said it was painful. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, fixed to problem. Wish I could turn that "feature" on and off.

I had my son integrate this into my home environment. I also purchased a Belkin plug with similar functionality. I purchased this TP Link to test their product vs Belkin. This device does NOT require you download an app to set it up. It was then integrated into my Google Home hub and I use it to turn lamps on automatically at dusk and off at the end of the night. Of course the hub controls it also with voice commands and it works flawlessly. I have not had any issues with it. It was cheaper than the Belkin. I purchased more Belkins only because of the companies reputation but for now there is no functional difference between the TP Link and Belkin. The TP Link works fine and saves you some money compared to the Belkin.

I use this for my floor lamp. I needed this because my lazy self sometimes didn't feel like getting up to turn the switch on and off. Works awesome... I use my phone app to control the on and off switch on the light, and sometimes my google assistance on my phone with my voice ... works perfectly fine for me.. only issue I have is that you do need to have your phone with you... and the app takes a little long to load up... where it would be much faster just hitting the switch if you're already up and going into a dark room. If you already own an Alexa you should be good.. I don't own one though. You can also control the light from ANYWHERE. I test it out 2 miles away.. and it worked. Does a lot more too.. where you can schedule it to turn on or off.... etc

I bought three of these when they were on sale since it was my first smart home adventure. These TP Link WiFi plugs work great, they do what the manufacturer said they would do. Linked up right away without needing additional equipment. In order to use all app options you do need more gear but that is a hook that all manufacturers seem to use. You can use scene function in the app to set quick on off for a certain set of devices so that is a nice feature but the scheduling is off limits without the additional hub. I have not experienced any issues with them so far and that is all I was looking for. On or off. I might look at a hub if I add more devices that warrant a need for the scheduling but these do everything I want right now.

I have tried three types of smart plug brands so far. TP-Link has been the most stable and works most of the time. The issues are usually related to the internet and not the device. The main issue with the older plugs is size. These plugs can fit two to a dual outlet which makes them a no brainer. There is an LED on the side, which is bright on some plugs but not on this one. The TP-Links Kasa app is user friendly and has a range of features. They also have a wide variety of products so building on to your smart home is easy. It works with both Alexa and Google Assistant. I wish that the plug had a USB on the side like some company's plugs. It would also be nice if the plugs were a little thinner. In all it's a good buy and I am happy.

Best Buy had a killer deal with a $10.00 off coupon, plus a price reduction on this smart plug. The packaging material provides good protection. On initial setup, it took me several attempts to connect to our wi-fi. Once the connection was finally made, it has worked flawlessly. I would give it five stars, but the experience setting up this plug required significant time, perhaps because of the firmware status. After the setup was finally completed, I updated the firmware. Pairs with Alexa. Not compatible with Apple Home.

Submitted as part of a free sample program These are the plugs I have been waiting for, the size is perfect and they are great little devices packed with lot for the small space. Much like the other smart plugs gone are the days of trying to figure out some old timer plug. Download TP-link’s app, plug it in and follow the simple setup. I now use this to help keep my kids from sneaking TV time. The small size allowed me to fit it in a tight space where the kids cannot reach. Plus it is kind of funny to turn it off when I am away. I picture them watching a show then off it goes. I laugh and laugh to myself. :D This plug so far is perfect small size big features.

Does what it is supposed to. I like the form a lot better than the other plugs out there because you can still use the other outlet. I am not a fan of having to use yet another app (Kasa) to set it up and use with Alexa however it works pretty seamlessly. I have not had any issues whatsoever with it dropping off the network and it's been reliable with Alexa. I just wish these companies would stop using their own app/hubs as they are starting to pile up when you start to automate more items in your house. Between Wink, ST, Hue, Kasa, Lightify and Harmony it starts to get a little crowded.

The TP-Link replaced a different brand bought from a different store. The other device would not work far too often. The previous brand apparently got confused if it received signals from a phone or tablet other than the original setup device. Not helpful. Plus, that other device completely lost all functionality when we made a router firmware update. The TP-Link has been in place now for over a month. It has responded to every signal so far with minimal hesitation. The Kasa App was very simple to configure and works from either my phone or tablet.

The TP-Link - Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini - White is a great little entry level smart product that can quickly transform your home into a smart system. The plug acts as a on/off smart connection point which needs to be paired to an Alexa device or Bluetooth system. The plug requires an app to initially connect the plug device and after any device plugged in will be accessible via the app or through voice with Alexa. Overall this product is solid, no issues, no problems and it was very simple to set up and make work.

It is bulky which is my only complaint so far hogging up the outlet but it works great so far for my LED under-cabinet lighting. Preparing foods and always need more light after your hands get dirty of course. "Alexa lights on" and there is light! My misconception with scheduling through the Alexa app blew my original intended use for the smart plug but that is an Alexa shortfall and this outlet does everything it should. Hopefully technology will soon be available to make it slightly smaller.

Like my Tp link switches. I use them to operate my lights in main areas of the home. Have them timed to go on and off per schedule. Also integrated with my Amazon Echo-Dot to turn on or off a whole room. Have a routine to wake up or say goodnight to command the lights on and off. Seem to be working. Reliably. Had one become non responsive, but unplugged it and reset it. Had been working reliable since.

These are great little smart plugs. I have two of the TP link and two of the Insignia in my house. When ganged together in one room, the TP link respond faster than the Insignia (although they are one year newer as well). They're great for turning on things that are somewhat out of the way or whatever. I use them a lot for christmas lights inside the house and to control power to radios that I then connect a Chromecast audio to. Great for someone who is just starting to get into IoT.

I needed a way for my wife to turn on a lamp on top of a bookcase without getting out a ladder. The Wi-Fi plug was easy to set up and synch with my Echo. Now with just a voice command, the light goes on and off and no need for a ladder! The only disadvantage is the size of the plug and the front receptacle which means placement behind furniture requires you to pull the furniture away from the wall for space. A side receptacle for plugging in the appliance in would be an improvement.
