First off, I love the field of view on this doorbell camera, the clarity, and the fact that you have the option for local storage. With that said, I don't like the fact that you can only see triggered events in history and not just back to anytime of the day to see the view with either the cloud storage or local storage options. The first week we had this we had zero false alerts. Now we are in week 3 and we are getting 30-50 false alerts a day which is super annoying. We hardwired ours and it unfortunately will not work with our existing chime which is one of the main reasons I purchased this brand because I was wanting to use the existing chime so that was disappointing. I'm also disappointed that this doesn't integrate with automations in coordination with Lutron smart switches. Was hoping motion from the doorbell could be automated to turn on the porch light.

      Hi Kat1,

Thank you for your review. We appreciate you sharing your experience with our Tapo Dual-Power Video Doorbell and are happy to hear you're enjoying its local storage option, field of view, and image clarity.

We appreciate your feedback regarding alerts, viewing/recording options, and compatibility with an existing chime(s), and we will send it to our Tapo team for future consideration.

Lutron is not part of the Tapo ecosystem, and is not advertised as an integration option. If you are ever unsure about Tapo product features or compatibility with third-party or existing hardware in your home, feel free to contact our support team using the support portal on our website, and an agent will gladly help, or join our TP-Link Community Forum, and our community members will be happy to discuss products and features with you.

Excellent Image Quality with Software Bugs

Image quality of doorbell is excellent with the exception of an artifact that I noticed after a few months of use (a circular region in horizontal center above vertical center that is blemished). The doorbell is incredibly frustrating to use with software bugs. Every two weeks or so the doorbell stops notifying events and the live view in the app stops working. The recordings are in black and white instead of color (yes, b&w, not infrared). The only way I’ve found to fix this is reboot the doorbell. When the memory card is full with loop recordings turned on the doorbell does not loop recordings. Instead the doorbell just stops recording and does not allow you to view, download, or delete any recordings that were already made. The only way I’ve been able to fix this is reformat the memory card.

      Hello Austin,

These bugs sound more like defects. I would recommend contacting support to troubleshoot and potential replace the existing doorbell through the product warranty. Some troubleshooting with support will be required before an RMA can be approved. Support can be reached via email, chat or phone 24/7 by going to our official website, clicking on support and then contact technical support. tplink

Setting up is easy. I chose to stick it on glass with the 3m tape. I found out that I could choose the spoken language. If I remember correctly, it goes; English, Korean, French, and Spanish. A good way to confuse people at the door. And you can change the ring color.

If you have existing Doorbell wiring I would recommend the D130. It a silmer design and allows for image distortion so that you can view the doorbell as a full screen instead of a fish eye. tplink

Pro: Great video and voice quality Almost all features are free Wide camera angles Various installation methods and bases Local storage on SD Card Con: Rare connection problems Need small screwdriver for tiny screws The Tapo Smart Doorbell is a well built, feature rich video doorbell. It’s easy to set up, and the app is user friendly, offering many features for free without needing a monthly subscription. The video recordings are high resolution, looking clear and detailed. Subscription adds cloud storage, but not much else that makes it a necessity. The doorbell can be installed in a few different ways. There’s the option to hardwire it or use it wireless with the battery. It also comes with two angled mounting plates. I opted for the wireless install and used the included 3M tape. Installation was simple, regardless of whichever method. Simply screw the doorbell to the mounting plates with the tiny screws. Small negative is that you’ll need a small screwdriver, which not everyone may have. The video and voice quality is very good. The camera has a wide angle, being able to see 180 degrees in all directions, which is great to see if something is left at the doorstep. The video, in 2k mode, looks clear and detailed, but choppy at 15 fps. The frame rate can be increased to 20 fps at the cost of storage and battery life. The video quality can also be dropped to 960p to extend battery life. The audio call quality is about as good as a phone on speaker call. A bit muffled but clear enough to understand speech. A negative is that sometimes there’s a connection error, saying the network is unstable despite having a strong WiFi signal. Closing the app and retrying fixes it most of the time. Not a big issue if the recording is saved, but can be annoying when trying to see the live view. The Tapo Doorbell has a lot of useful features and the UI in the app is really user friendly. Probably one of the best reasons to get this doorbell is that, unlike some of the other brands, most features of the Tapo Smart Doorbell are available without needing to pay for the monthly subscription. The features include motion, person, pet, vehicle and package detection. Detection zones can be set per mentioned categories. Footage can be saved locally on the SD card (not included). The video can be viewed in either 2k or 960p. Privacy mode can be toggled to shut off recording and live viewing. Even small features like a quick automated voice response at a touch of a button are really nice to have. The subscription, which has a 30 day trial, offers 30 day cloud storage, rich notifications, and video summary and weekly report of activities. Rich notifications just adds a snapshot of the video in the alerts. Video summary will compile activities in the last 30 days as a quick video and weekly reports will show activities at the end of each week. Cloud storage is really the only big benefit, but not necessary. Battery life seems good, but I haven’t had it long enough to fully test it. So far, it went down to 97% after a week. So far, I’m satisfied with the performance of the Tapo Doorbell. It’s well made, has good video quality, and most of the features are free. Local storage is a big plus, and monthly subscription is not too expensive if one decides to use it.
