Need $5 phone that works, not $500 that doesn't

Lost my great $15 LG phone, similar $20 LG replacement back-ordered so I got this off the shelf; can't hurt to have two, right? Downloaded the manual, so I'm not flying blind here. ...The L/R/up/down ring is recessed instead of raised, very subtle to operate. Must use the icon menu by arrowing around instead of with the keyboard, though after you get to a text submenu that does work. ...Of all possible status icons the only ones that ever displayed were battery (luckily, since even standby is days short of what they claim and the phone just shuts off w/o beeping or anything#, vibrate mode, and "3g network available" but not a hint about bars. ...NOW THE TOTAL FAILS: Others here wonder why it always vibrates when a call connects. More to the point, it kept reverting to "ring plus vibrate" and finally vibrate only. You can accidentally set vibrate-only with one touch of the keypad, but #immediately calling from another phone# it quickly became impossible to menu-set to anything else. ...Thought I might retire it to my daily "check on the old folks" call, but it's clearly worthless even for that. Could leave it on the charger in the truck for emergency outbound calls, but 1) I'm virtually never w/o my main phone, and 2) I wouldn't trust this phone if my life did depend on it. Just going to run out the 60-minute card and recycle it. ...BUT - It does games, internet, conference calls & so much stuff I'm forgetting that even many smartphone users probably never use. Look, geniuses, nobody outside the Third World is buying a $5 phone for the camera etc #some questions here whether you can even upload video from a phone without a data plan#. ...I don't care if you do all this because you CAN, just put bombproof 2001 technology into a $5 phone that does the 5 or 6 things a real phone needs to do instead of turning into a flimsy paperweight in a few weeks.

muddy sound, weak spkr, otherwise ok

Flipphone updated from Motorola V176 to this one. Navigation and features are better, but basic sound (listening to incoming call) is muddy / muffled. switching on spkr phone makes sound sharper, better, but oddly does not boost volume at all. i.e. it doesn't really have a spkr phone. It's more like a "sharpness" button. Clock/Calendar cannot be set manually, only auto-set by carrier. So if you were thinking "Hey, a $5 alarm clock, sounds good!" Forget it. Or pull / reinstall battery at midnight to get the time set and forget the rest. This is an improvement over the basic Motorola V176 for many functions / navigation / features, etc., but the phone isn't as solid. The V176 definitely seems higher quality materially; I'm keeping it for backup, since this LG 440G may soon break. LG440G has no memory slot, so you are stuck with the small amt in the phone, which is like 150MB. So you might get 40 short songs onto it. So again, if you were thinking, "mp3 player!" ... Don't be too excited. and there's not data cable function in the phone. Maybe the bluetooth feature allows song transfer from PC. *Maybe.* Haven't tried it yet, but USB cable connection is *charging only*. They want you to buy / download songs. I would recommend this to a friend only if they wanted a cheap basic flipphone, and didn't already have one. All the updates may not be worth the downside of the poor basic sound. No jack for corded headset (The Motoral V176 has one....), haven't tried the bluetooth....

    Lemon in Black

I bought this phone to replace the damaged Motorola I'd had for over a year. The size and feature(clamshell) were exactly wanted in a phone. Setting it up was not difficult, only difficult part was getting used to how to go about personalizing the phone. If the volume for the incoming call was turned all the way up the audio distorted so bad that I could not clearly understand what the person was saying, setting the volume lower made the audio clearer but if the person did not speak loud enough I could not hear them. There were several times while holding the phone it never showed an incoming call but minutes to hours later I would get a notification that there was voice mail, one of those calls was an emergency. More than once I would not have a signal even though I am in the coverage area, most of the time there would be only one signal bar and I would have to hold the phone up in the air just to get one or two more bars. I was at a friends house and 300 yards behind his house sits a cell tower and I would not have a signal, his phone had full signal strength and his service was the same as mine. Lightweight and flimsy these phones do not handle accidental damage well. Now perhaps the phone I had was a lemon or perhaps it's that Tracfone's service is of very poor quality.

    Bad phone from LG

So I lost my trusty Motorola flip phone on a trip and had to get a new Tracfone. Couldn't find that model and the only thing other than an expensive Android phone at Best Buy was this model. It's from LG so I figured it would be good. Wow, was I wrong. The voice quality is bad, even with 4 bars. I hear static and dropouts on the call, from everywhere. Even my voicemail is hard to make out. The texting is good, but there's no option to set the subject line. My old Motorola had that. The phone is set to make a noise for literally everything when you get it. And some of them you just can't shut off. Really annoying when you pick up a call and you get a buzz like another call is coming in, but nope it just buzzed to let you know the call connected. Gee, I'd never guess that. I've thought of replacing it, but given other complaints about this phone I may just eat the cost and find a better model at another store.

    Great Phone, Great Price

This is a great phone. Very simple, and if you activate it online (FREE, tracfone.com), you get a FREE 20 minutes of talk time, which makes this a great phone to keep in your car for emergencies. It can browse the web and text as well. And only $5! This phone also takes photos and videos, acts as an MP3 player (transfer music to it over Bluetooth), gets email, and many other things! Even if this phone didn't make calls or text, I'd still like it for the extra features. And yes, as I mentioned, it has Bluetooth. This is great because you can send the photos and videos you took to your computer, and you can send photos, videos and music to the phone from your computer. The only thing I don't like is that when web browsing, it takes extra minutes from the time you bought. I was once checking something online that took 1 minute, and it took 4 of my minutes! But overall, this is a really, really great phone, and I totally recommend you get this!

Basic cell phone with decent features

This Tracfone was a great deal, especially since Best Buy price matched another retailer who had the phone on sale. Features include a 1.3MP camera/video recorder, bluetooth wireless technology, internet access, MP3 player, text/picture messaging, alarm clock, hands-free speaker, voice/sound recorder/voice dialing, external caller ID, phonebook that can hold up to 1000 entries, and long battery life (talk time up to 3.52 hours/standby time up to 7-10 days.) It allows you to buy a 90-day plan for $19.99, which is less than most plans. The only less expensive plan I have found is offered by T-mobile ($3/month), but you only get 30 minutes with the T-mobile plan included in that price, so the best plan really depends upon how many minutes you plan to use per month. For the features, I think this is a great basic phone for someone who has decided to use Tracfone phone service.

I purchased this phone as an upgrade for my parents who are definitely not ready for a smartphone. This feature phone features better call quality than their previous Motorola flip phone, and includes the addition of a camera, something they thought would be nice to have. The design of the phone is nice, though the button layout is a little more challenging for those less dexterous. It is slim and sleek, offering a good hand feel and a nice hinge. The screen is acceptable, certainly good enough for this phone, but not particularly sharp or bright. The phone works well - calls are crisp and sound is clean. The camera is what you would expect out of a phone at this pricepoint - an absolutely no thrills picture taker. However, it does work and pictures range from fair to good, but don't expect to immortalize anyone with this camera. Overall, I think this is a good upgrade for those that need a feature phone, like the flip phone design, and can handle sub-par camera performance (compared to peers).

This is an excellent basic phone. Even has Bluetooth to connect externally for talk and transfers to other devices. It is a very evolved implementation of a flip-phone, so it is quite reliable, and physically solid, able to take abuse. Battery life and standby time is very very long, measuring several days at least. It takes ok pictures for texting selfies to your friends, but it is not a smart phone. Address book can be backed up into yours or any sim card, for safekeeping, or transferred via bluetooth to another phone. It has an external display that shows the time, who is calling or texting you. Though it comes with ability to get online, the code hasn't been updated lately, so it is not good at getting to email. If you are considering this phone, then you don't want a smart phone anyway, so it is a great choice.

Phone had an invalid SIM card and would not activate. Spent several frustrating hours on the phone trying to explain this problem to Tracfone customer service reps who spoke limited English and were unable to fix things. I also purchased a minute card for use with the phone. Since I was returning the phone, the minute card was never activated, the PIN not scratched off. Best Buy would not let me return the minute card, even though it was unused and had been bought for a phone that was defective. It took a call to my credit card company to finally get my money back. Tracfone is the cheapest way to go, but their customer service sucks. I ended up purchasing a Samsung phone and switching to another cell phone provider.

I bought this phone for my parents that have never owned a cell phone in their life! They both have really bad eyesight and hearing but can see the screen and hear this phone very well! Neither one of them wanted a phone but I insisted that they needed one in case of an emergency. They finally accepted this and now they wont put it down! They still don't know how to really work all the options on it, but they figured out the basic answer and hang up on a phone call! (Considering that they are in their 70's and are quite new to technology, they really like this little phone)! Bottom line... it is a very basic phone, but it's perfect for them and what they are using it for! I would definitely recommend this if you need a phone for very little use and don't need the bells and whistles!

This is my third Tracfone and is my favorite so far. The screen is larger than my LG420 and is much easier to read for us older folks. The buttons are large and you have a definite sense of when you've pressed them. Sound quality is good and clear and the phone fits the hand nicely. There is ample memory for contacts, photos, and music. The selection of ringtones stored on the phone is adequate, but more can be downloaded. I did not care for the photos available for wallpaper as they made seeing some of the text of he screen difficult to read. I chose a solid color background, but photos can be imported that would work better as wallpaper. I have never had a problem with Tracfone connections or signals. The cost per minute is low, text costs are even lower.

I purchased this phone for my elderly father who was looking for a phone with large numbers and that is easy to use. He likes it better that the other touchphones available for Tracfone, since his fingers were too big for the small screens. This phone is ideal for him, and if it breaks, I can always buy him a new one with such a low price. I also purchased a $100 minute card for him, which gives him service for a whole year. For someone who only wants to use a cell phone for talking, this is a very inexpensive choice. I can rest easy that my father has constant, reliable cell service in case of an emergency. I gave the phone 4 stars instead of 5 because the customer service from Tracfone for the set up was a bit of hassle and Best Buy was not willing to do it for us.

I wanted a basic inexpensive flip phone so I could make calls if needed and family can reach me. I wanted something small enough to fit in my pocket. I'm a bit dyslexic and don't text, I have a real camera, I don't need to surf the net. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on the phone or a service plan. This fits the bill admirably. This phone started with inexpensive 3 month cards with a decent amount of minutes, had "Double Minutes for Life" and came with a coupon book inside that gave additional minutes and service time. The screen automatically reads out the number of minutes and days left. It only uses fractional minutes, so quick calls don't even use a full minute.

After paying high monthly charges for hardly any minute use during the month, I finally convinced myself to buy a Tracfone. I'd had been putting off this idea for some time, don't know why, but now that I've done it, I'll be saving myself hundreds of dollars a year. Also, I've never used the texting features until now, and love that I can use it very easily. The only complaint is that the battery life seems to be short, but that's no big deal. Unfortunately, I was not aware of the fact that since I was entitled to get double minutes, my initial purchase of the 800 minutes card did not give me 1,600 minutes. At set up the maximum minutes I could get were 1,200 minutes, so I feel as though I lost 400 minutes. I did get two years on the contract plan instead of 365 days.

I like the flip phone format, very convenient. the 3G Internet and email speeds are great. Sound quality is about average. The speaker phone is distorted at top volume of 7, so just lower it to 5 or 6. This isn't a phone you are going to speak on the speaker phone a lot, just to monitor when someone puts you on hold for a couple of minutes. It has a good camera and video capability. It is also easy to upload small mp3 files to use as free ringtones for people on your contact list. Easy for texting. What do you expect for $10-$15?

This is a great tracfone flip phone for $5 at Best Buy. The phone has large number keys which is great for a person with large fingers, so you don't accidently press the wrong keys. Phone also comes with double minutes for life, which is another great feature of tracfones, a lot less expensive than a big carrier plan. I also like the flip phone part, because it keeps me from accidently calling someone when the phone is in my pocket. This phone has great features, including a great camera, and also has nice, clear sound when talking with someone on it. I would recommend this phone for anyone looking for a flip phone from tracfone, with large, easy to read number keys.

I only paid $5 for this phone. It works just fine (so far) as a basic cell phone to make & receive calls, which is pretty much all I use it for. I've only had it a few weeks & the other day I noticed that the display screen on the outside of the flip-up cover was cracked & is now unreadable. I didn't bang it, I definately didn't drop it & I have no idea how this could have happened. It was fine when I put it in the back pocket of my jeans. In the meantime, I didn't sit on anything hard, just the cushioned seat of my car. For $5 I guess I shouldn't complain too much & as I said, it still functions otherwise. It's a basic cheap phone & you get what you pay for but I'll continue to use it until it's dead.

I bought a Tracfone over ten years ago for security purposes. Didn't want to give up my phone number so I have kept upgrading. Tried a TF smart phone look alike but it was too touch sensitive. I really like this flip phone. It's comparable to my husband's LG phone for which he pays $50 a month on contract. My phone bill is much less and no long distance problems--California and Tennessee to Texas. I had an Android smart phone on a two year contract which I seldom used. Instead I continued using my LG Tracfone and eventually discontinued my contract for the Android smartphone altogether.

I gave up using my smart phone because of its complexity. I just want to make and receive calls easily. I do not text, tweet, do e-mails, etc, as I use the computer for that. Even making and answering calls on the smart phones is to complicated. Accidently touched the smart phone screen and would lose trying to make or receive a call. Don't need a gps, camera, flash light, check prices at a store, etc. or any other apps, other than a PHONE. A simple phone for strictly phone use. Another plus is that it and its use are far cheaper.

My mother's old Tracfone flip-phone wasn't holding much of a charge anymore. This was cheaper than buying a new battery, plus she got 2 free months of service when we activated it. So, it's like we got a new phone for free. It's also better than her old phone, with a larger display. And settings for larger text size make it very easy for her to read. Our only nit-pick is the small buttons crammed around the center navigation button / pad. Have to be careful not to accidentally press the little web / msg / etc. buttons. But that is something which is common to almost any flip phone now. We are very satisfied.
