    Best Universal Gaming Headset

After having to deal with a cheap headset pair I bought earlier this week I eventually decided to take a leap of faith by actually allowing myself to spend over $50 for a pair of gaming headphones for the first time and not only that but I picked up a pair that was 3xtimes that amount. I've never imagined that I'd ever pay that much for headphones before I'd go out to get a next gen iPod Touch and Monster Beats Studio first but I did. And amazingly enough I don't regret it in the least. As an owner of a gaming PC, Xbox360, and PS3, I ultimately didn't want to spend $200 or more for a pair of headphones that would require me to have $50+ adapters to get them to work for all 3 platforms. And with everyone I know and all the reviews I've read I eventually began reading up on all Turtle Beach's products and comparing my options. Leading me to one choice the Ear Force DPX21 being the only headset that was right out of the box compatible with all my consoles and PC and without me having to order additional parts to work properly on either system. Not only that but also including the DSS which is an adapter that can give my pair dolby ditigal 5.1/7.1 surround sound, giving me the most complete headset bundle possible! Pros: -Amazing sound and a huge advantage in gaming. -Extremely comfortable, I often find myself forgetting I have them on when my family tries to speak to me from in the same room. -Mic is great and extremely clear for my teammates. -Ease to set up to all 3 gaming systems once you've already adjusted each system's sound and video settings for the first time. -Wired*** (Yes I said wired.... less interference problems) -Clear and concise User's Guide to help you with configuring the headset for each system for the first time. Cons: -Even with the wonderful User's Guide I still had trail and errors with sound options and settings to work out (leaving game about 3 times to fix sound or mic on my PS3) until eventually I got it right. -Wired***(Yea..... well it's really long and that's both kinda good and kinda bad) ***Good if you had your gaming console in a huge living room and need your cable to connect further from TV/Console to sofa I guess. ***Bad if you're like me playing in your bedroom and only about 6 feet away from the TV and have 10feet of extra slack at your toes. Even though I would say the price is pretty steep after spending 2-3days reading reviews and comparing features it just all leads to the lack of options if you want gaming headphones you gotta pay and the prices are pretty locked in throughout all brands so it just can't be helped.

    Hands Down! Best Available Headset

I've read reviews and gotten some from several friends. There is no real way of knowing which headset is the best until you personally try it out for yourself. It's true and there is no arguing that a gaming headset greatly improves anyone's gaming experience. With a personal interest, I purchased all the available headsets by Turtle Beach including the X11, DX11, X31, X41, PX21 and the DPX21. Not many are aware that the DX11 and DPX21 are exclusive only to Best Buy. Below are some personal opinions while experimenting with the Xbox: X11-positive:comfortable, great starter headset and for those who don't want to spend a lot negative: wired, utilizes stereo audio>not very convenient if you're using an HDMIconnection DX11- positive: same comfort as the X11's with True Digital Surround Sound with an audio optical connection (better sound play) negative: I guess you can say the only negative thing is that it's wired X31-positive: wireless-no wire mess, comfortable negative: can experience static interference as with any wireless headset, utliizesa stereo audio connection-not HDMI friendly, requires batteries (recommend rechargeables) X41-positive: the best comfort out of the X-series, wireless, dolby digital sound (better sound play), wireless negative: battery consumption (recommend rechargeables), some static interference (expected from wireless sets) PX21-positive: great comfort, individual controls for game/chat volume (chat boostalso) negative: wired? The deciding factors are sound quality and comfort. The wired headsets seemed to fair better compared to the wireless ones. Unless wires are an issue>I would recommend a wired one. The X41's sounded great but the audio interference, battery usage and price point were deterrents. The X31 were convenient like the X41's but in my personal opinion, the X11 sounded better compared to the X31's. The DX11's were like the X11's but with better sound quality because of the Ear Force DSS. The PX21's were just as comfortable but the variable/chat boost made all the difference. Adding the Ear Force DSS was the icing on top. The DPX21 has all the qualities in a true gaming headset and it's PC, PS3 compatible. If you're against wires, the X41's will perform similarly. *note the XLC's were not reviewed due to poor quality and chat/voice issues> an inexpensive headset that fairs better than the stock XBOX ones

Lacks clarity among other issues. . .

I purchased these after returning a pair of defective Tritton AX Pros just to test the water. . . needless to say I will be picking up a new pair of Pros in sometime today. The DPX21's just lack overall clarity as everything sounds somewhat 'muffled' and garbled. I struggle to hear directional sounds (gun fire, footsteps and other ambient noises). Just seems as if the volume isn't high enough and when You turn it up it's VERY overwhelming! The biggest differences between these and the Pros ($20 price difference) are Build Quality, Sound Quality and True Dolby Digital 5.1 SS all of which are superior on the AX Pros and or non-existent on the DPX21's Tritton AX Pros use 8 drivers (speakers) total (4 in each ear cup) to give You true 5.1 Surround Sound (SS). The TB DPX21 uses a 5.1 SIMULATION technique (meaning fake 5.1/7.1 sound) they use one speaker in each ear cup (stereo headset) and use the decoder box to trick Your ears. To make along story short the Trittons sound and Bass blow them out of the water! Before I forget the DPX21 has a cheap looking headband (similar to what You'd find on an late 90's pair of headphones) and looks easily breakable as does the rest of the headset The constant 'Hiss' was an issue with Me as well (sounds like an old record player and also has a nice faint BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP noise) I'd also like to note that those BOTH bleed into gameplay etc. The clarity of the Trittons is 2nd to none and has NO HISS or any other random unneeded noise! Turtle Beach DPX21: Pros: 1. Comfort and weight (really really light does hurt ears after while) 2. Ease of use (Set-up was really snappy and simple) 3. Includes all necessary cables to hook up (Unlike Pricey Astros) 4. Music sounds good, then again these are 'Gaming' headsets right? Cons: 1. Gaming (Call of Duty) just really lacks clarity overall (Plus 'Hiss' interferes with game sound and voice chat) 2. As said above can hurt Your ears after awhile 3. Bass is lacking 4. Not loud enough to hear sounds You should be hearing! 5. Footsteps in COD forget about it all You hear is Your muffled gun! 6. Not True Dobly digital sound (it's SIMULATED FAKE SS!!!) 7. You can take ANY pair of headphones and get the same sound quality while hooked up to the decoder (as they are all stereo to!) 8. Hiss Hiss Hiss Hiss Hiss 9. Decoder box lacks extra USB ports and other audio connections 10. Other players complained of My Mic echoing 11. Build quality looks/feels and is very cheap (Wire splitting is very VERY common on this model. . . get a warranty) 12. Overpriced! To summarize get $20 more dollars and get the Tritton AX Pro YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! I'm trying to not be biased but the AX Pro really is that much better. . . seriously just try it

VERY NICE headphones - a little spendy.

There are few headphones in the $100-$150 range with the capabilities and overall quality of Turtle Beach's DPX21. When I started shopping - I thought a $40 bluetooth handsfree device (like the new Jawbone) would work just fine.. Well.. That query morphed - into a high quality gaming headset search. I suddenly wanted EVERYTHING - Dolby 7.1, bluetooth wireless, 50mm drivers, etc. And I wanted to spend $100. ..or less.. and I wanted them NOW.. (who doesn't??) My 5+ hour internet search pointed to the same options you'll see - Sennheiser, Bose, Sony, Turtle Beach, Creative labs, Tritton, Razer, etc. - and all are "good" options. Most were significantly MORE than $100, though. I decided to head down to my local Best Buy and see what was on the shelf, as I REALLY wanted a set that day. At the suggestion of the salesman (who also owned a PS3, and a set of DPX21's) - I decided to bite the bullet and give the DPX's a shot. I was thinking $150 is a lot of money, esp. for a wired headphone. (BTW, you get about 15 feet of cable, so if you like to sit "away" from your TV while gaming, you'll have plenty of cable length to help keep a comfortable distance..) The first thing to consider - when you set up your PS3 to run a secondary audio option, the BEST signal you'll get is Dolby 5.1 - it simply cannot process Dolby 7.1 on the USB channel . Score one for the DPX21 - it manipulates the 5.1 signal it to give "virtual" 7.1. And it is impressive.! When I put the headphones on for the first time (C.O.D / Black Ops) - the soundstage was HUGE. I pulled one ear away to make sure my home theater system wasn't on!! Directionality was superb, detail was outstanding, bass was good. All in all, YES - these are expensive (for wired headphones), but you do get a superb product. No disappointment!!

Great concept plagued with design flaws.

I'm going to try to make this as brief as possible. The DPX21 headsets are a great design concept with some inherent issues that require rectifying to make this an excellent product. Purchased the headset around November 2010, buy the end of February I was in the market for a new set due to structural and sound issues. The sound imaging and control functions associated with the headset are outstanding, and the sound quality is fairly good as well. However; with that said, the headset coupled with the amplifier adapter produces a fairly high amount of bass response. With the headphones and amplifier adjusted to minimal bass settings, the bass response was still very noticeable while playing games with a great deal of explosions, i.e. Battlefield BC2. IMO, this lead to my first issue with the headset, a failing driver in the left ear cup. The driver cuts out intermittently, and requires a stiff pop of the cup to restore sound. Doesn't make for enjoyable gaming. Shortly after having issues with the driver, I was simply removing the headset after gaming, and the left cup caught on my ear lobe (not kidding) and the plastic spindle attaching the cup to the chassis snapped. if you read many reviews you will find this a common occurrence with these headphones. I rectified the problem with a little 5 minute epoxy, however was not overly impressed by the structural failure. Comfort of wear was also sometimes an issues for long gaming sessions. Overall, I would have to say the headphones have potential, however are plagued by a few issues in overall concept and design. Since this time, I have purchased a set of Tritton AX720's for about $25 less and have been nothing but pleased. While I will say the DPX-21's have a slight advantage in the area of sound control specifically bass adjustment, the Trittons are simply a much better built, ultra comfortable set of headphones with excellent sound quality where the bass is metered at an acceptable level. If you're looking for a set of headphones in this price range, I suggest doing yourself a favor and giving the Trittons a strong consideration before purchasing the Turtle Beach models.

I got these for christmas and they are amazing. I've used them to listen to music and played a lot of Halo: Reach. You can actually use them on any optical audio source or stereo, not just the 360 or the PS3. The detail of the sound is next to none. The 5.1/7.1 surround sound works like a charm, i can hear all sorts of details that i never could before! The bass on these things is killer! I actually feel like my whole body is shaking from the bass, even though i'm really not; you just get that sort of felling and gratification with the DPX21. In game chat works excellent, especially with the Chat Boost feature. These also allow you to hear yourself talk so you don't shout loud since you can't actually hear your voice with the headset on. I was skeptical about this feature at first but found it was very natural and works extremely well. I have used other less expensive headsets before but they just can't hold a candle to these. If you are trying to justify the extra price over a cheaper pair, go for these... you will NOT regret it! BTW these felt great while you wear them, they arn't too heavy. Also the cords they come with are plenty long so you can sit a good distance from your audio source, which is nice.

This is my first set of headphones so I have nothing to compare these with. I got these in mid December and I think they are fantastic hooked to the PS3, the sound is awesome. I actually use them the most on my PC where I spend most of my time. They work well over the Steam network playing games and in Skype, however there is some sort of weird noise that follows any mouse movement though that might be system related. The headphones comes with plenty of wire and allows you to sit anywhere in the living room. The wire is excessive if your like me and going to use them on the PC, it gets all bunched up. My only complaint about these headphones is with something in the padding material will leave a nasty purple oil stain on anything paper related so watch what you sit the headphones down on, any important papers or magazines will be ruined within 15 minutes. I've used these headphone everyday since 12/13/2010 and have even knocked them off my desk a few times and they are very stable. Everyone else with durability issues must have been extremely rough with them or threw them getting mad at COD while unloading an entire clip in someones face and they don't die just walk up to you and knife you 1x lol

I just bought these to play COD Black Ops. I really cannot imagine playing without a surround sound headset anymore. They have saved me several times from dangers sneaking up from behind and they have drastically increased the gaming quality. They fit very well, and are very comfortable for long gaming sessions. The sound quality is extremely good. The sound is so good it really makes you feel immersed in the game. They do block a lot of ambient noise so you can focus on the game, and even with them turned up, they are very quiet to someone sitting right next to you. The only problems I have with them is that they are wired (minor problem) and the microphone boom quickly broke through normal usage in less than a week and doesn't stay where I put it (major problem). Instead it just falls to the lowest position, so it sits below my chin instead of in front of my mouth. I will be exchanging these for an unbroken pair. This is an awesome headset, especially for the price.

I bought this headset so that I can play my playstation with sound and not disturb anyone at night by having the tv too loud. I must say that this headset is awesome. I can crank up the volume on the headset and someone sitting a few feet from me would not hear it. The headset is very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I also lve the surround sound on this thing. I had an explosion go off while playing Battlefield 3 and I actually jumped because I thought something fell over in the room. I also love that the wire is very long so you can comfortably sit a distance away from your tv without having to worry about the cord pulling out of the console. Not a fan of wireless headsets. It seems to be pretty durable as i've dropped it a couple times and haven't had any problems. However, I did purchase the Geek Squad Protection on it so that if it does break within 2 years they will replace it for me and for $20 for the coverage you can't beat that.

I was looking for something with better sound to replace my AX180's and was down to the Tritton AX Pro or the TB DPX21. They're both great headsets, but in the end what sold on the DPX21's was PC compatibility. I primarily use them on the PS3, but having the option to use them on PC was important to me. I tried both, and found them to both sound excellent. The AX Pro's feel a little more solid and from some of the reviews I've read the DPX21's have several reports of breaking and poor headset quality. I haven't experienced any issues, but I am definitely more careful with them because they do feel a little flimsy compared to the Tritton products. To address this, I went ahead and dropped $20 on the replacement plan. This brought the overall price in line with the AX Pro's. I've used them to watch movies on Netflix, and play several different games. The sound quality is amazing. Sounds come from the proper location and they have greatly enhanced my gaming experience. Overall this is a great headset.

    Just a bad headset

To start out this review the turtle beaches dpx 21 are bad in general. My 4th pair just broke today and i am mad. My first pair echoed other gamers chat whenever my mic was turned off so i returned them, and my second pair had a buzzing issue. My third pair actually lasted for a couple months and then when i took them over to my dads house, in a safe spot in my backpack, the left ear piece came detached from the headset. On my fourth pair the same thing happened to my third, just when the headset fell off a foot stool 1 ft tall! They are not durable at all. Also, they are very uncomfortable on your ears ( i have to take them off and rub my ears after a while because they start hurting). There are many wires which is a pain to bundle up at your feet. My friend has trittons that are $20 cheaper and much better than dpx 21s. I have a warranty on my turtle beaches, but i'm going to try to ask for those. I have had a terrible experience with my turtle beaches. DONT GET TURTLE BEACHES (at least ps3 ones, i have a xbox pair that are awesome)

    PS3 gaming performance

After initial setup - the sound is amazing. I bought them for use with my PS3. Quality sound while playing my PS3: excellent. I am able to control game sound, bass volume, and chat volume from the clip on very easily. Playing first person shooters using a headset is so much better now (previous setup was using surround sound speakers and an open mic). I can hear footsteps, grenade pins pulling - and i'm not disturbing my neighbors by the loud sound. Ease of use: You have to read the directions if you're not familiar with setup of audio equipment. The optical cord is taped underneath the plastic casing (in case you miss it when you pour out the box), and the DSS is on the plastic case. After you've setup all the cords, flip the ON switch below the DSS. It is USB powered, so the device you're trying to listen to needs to be on. Durability: No rating yet because I've just bought them, and haven't been able to test it properly. After paying $150 for them, I plan on taking good care of them.

I have been looking around for quite some time for the perfect headset. Some people kept telling me the tritons were better then some told me these were better. So i had to search myself. The tritons had problems with the speakers going out and with the headset breaking, and for those you couldn't get an extended warranty. Plus if you were using HD you had to get a different cable in order to use the triton. I started doing some more research about this product. I read many reviews. I talked to best buy on which one is the best. They told me this is the best sounding, most durable, most comfortable plus you could get an extended warranty. I ended up buying it. I would have to agree. It is the best of everything. And is definetly really easy to set up. I highly recommend you get this. You wont be dissappointed.

A friend and i recently went to best buy to purchase headphones. I got the Turtle Beach DPX21 and he got the Tritton. We both used a 10% off for accessories coupon, you can find it in the coupon app, i think i paid $153.00. Even though his is heavier and the earphones cant turn to the side. You can hear way better, directional which way the sound came from and the clarity is better. These headphones do produce an awesome sound but they hiss even during game play, you have to listen for it but once you know its there you can hear it. With both headphones you have to switch the sound settings to optical, to use it, then switch it back to HDMI if you were going to watch a movie. I originally wanted to headphones so my girl could sleep while i play COD but they have so much leak that it just sound like the tv is on low. And 7.1 i don't think so, its like a 5.1 that trys to sound like a 7.1

Im hearing impaired so I found the surround sound models muffled or not clear enough for me. I literally tried every version they had in the store. The Sony PS3 ones, the TB x41's, the Logitech F540's. These seemed to have clearer sound and made it much easier for me to hear my brother when we played BF3. I found all the surround sound ones to be too difficult for me to hear well enough - smaller & multiple speakers I guess? These were great and at a low price point - I wasn't worried about the cable since I only sit about 5-6ft from the TV. The closest one was the Logitech F540 which I thought were really nice (no surround option on these) they blew away everyone else in terms of overall experience. The F540s are a really nice headset but for the price I decided to go with the TB x21. The TB one seemed the most comfortable for me as well. Props to BB for allowing me to return all the sets until I found one I liked without a hassle.

These are my first Turtle Beach headsets that I own. After my Tritton 720's broke I wanted to actually buy another pair from Tritton. Instead I did research online for a different pair of headsets. A friend recommended Turtle Beach to me but I was skeptical about them considering how much I heard they break often. Yet I looked around to find a pair and ended up with the DPX21's and I'll say that the sound on these are really great. Although on the down side the bass can get over bearing and sometimes I can't really tell where some sounds are coming from like foot steps or gun fire. Over all I really like these headsets and would buy another pair of Turtle Beach headsets when my DPX21's R.I.P. So anyone looking for a good headset to start out with try the DPX21.

All you need is in the box- including wires. Quick to set up and user friendly means little if any reading- streight to gaming. Comfortable for all-nighters. The Headset breathes well so no sweat -litterly. I didn't think true surrond sound was possible in a head set yet it is. I can distinctly hear eight directional sound. Sound is clear, viberant, and intime(unlike some 5.1) Allowing the individual control of bass helps save the ears when cannons, guns, and bombs explode and with the amplification incorporated you need it. There is a slight hiss when using chat when boosted very high. I say get it. you'll love it and play better because the sound clues and direction can be heard.

I needed a replacement for my bluetooth headset and decided to go with a surround sound headset. These are very tunable and work very well for COD. Footsteps are clear when they are available. Those that have been disappointed may have have the stereo expansion turned on. Turn it off for surround sound as mentioned in the directions. The base can also be turned up way too high causing the sound to be muddied. Dial it down and it's perfect. The cables are plenty long and easy to hook up. Just remember the remove the protective tips from the optic cable before installing. Enjoy.

I've always used a Bluetooth headset with my PS3 when playing online (which is not that often) but my brother kept telling me about Turtle Beach headsets. I started checking them out and saw this one on their website. When I saw that it was one sale, I decided to get it and give it a try. I really like the way it sounds, it is very comfortable and you can wear it for long periods of time. Buying this item has enhanced my gaming experience. I now use it, not only for games but, also when watching a movie and do not want to disturb anyone around me. Another thing I liked about this headset is the cross platform compatibility. I can hook this up on my PS3, Xbox 360 and PC without issues. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good quality headset that is affordable too.
