Very Good, but not for Plasma Owners!

After considering most of the options available for gaming headphones with surround, I decided to try the X4s. I am, for the most part, pleased with my purchase. Setup is as simple as it gets--put in the batteries, plug in the base unit, connect the optical audio cable, and off you go. Sound quality is very good for games and movies. The surround effect works very well--not as realistic as my 5.1 home-theater setup, but pretty close. In games, for example, turning your character will cause noticeable shifts in where sounds come from. Very useful in first-person shooters. The effect carries over to DVD and Blu-Ray--it's not the equal of a good separate-speaker HT setup, but then again, you're not disturbing your neighbors (or your spouse sleeping next to you) with late-night fun. The bass-boost switch on the headset is nice to have, and does give noticeable "oomph" to the low end, but I have noticed that it can become overwhelmed and somewhat distorted by extreme low-frequency effects (such as in action films). I have not tried these for critical music listening, but they're not really designed for that. A note on sound quality: there is always a very low background hiss coming through these headphones. During use I don't notice it, but in quiet moments or when there's no sound signal you'll always hear it. It gets worse with plasma TVs (see below). The headset is pretty comfortable. The fuzzy earpiece covering is soft and doesn't get sweaty and sticky like vinyl, which I like. The foam could be a little firmer; I start to feel hard plastic at the back of my ear after extended wear. The wireless system relies on an infrared (IR) beam instead of a radio signal so common in wireless devices these days. The plus side of this is that there won't be any interference from cordless phones, wireless networks, etc. However, this also means that there must be a direct line of sight between the base unit and the headset, so you can't hide it in a cabinet or otherwise make it inconspicuous. The other problem with IR is that plasma televisions WILL interfere with this system somewhat. Evidently plasmas radiate a fair amount of IR. I did a little experimenting with mine and found that the brighter the scene on the display, the worse the interference. For example, my plasma has a "whitewash" function to reduce burn-in that basically turns the entire screen a bright white. This causes significant interference with the headphone signal. Thus, movies or games with a lot of brightness will potentially cause you problems. Moving the base unit away from the TV and closer to the headset helps, but you might need very long cables/cords to do this. Workable, but inconvenient and messy-looking--it defeats the whole purpose of having wireless headphones in the first place. I'd go so far as to discourage anyone from purchasing this headset with a plasma TV, unless it's just for occasional use. My primary setup is a DLP-type set, though, and it works fine. I've not used the microphone for online gaming myself, but my 15-year-old does and reports that it works great. No complaints. The last issue is that this headset is very expensive. Honestly I think it's priced at least $50 too high, all things considered. I got it on sale, and personally I would not consider the X4 at full retail. You can buy a really, really good set of wired stereo headphones for $200 that would be a better value, wireless or not. Do I recommend the X4? For anyone but plasma owners, yes. But only if you can find it on sale or have some gift certificates to burn. I didn't do this myself, but I'd suggest trying the next-step-down X3s to see if the twice-the-price X4s are worth it. YMMV.

Before buying these headphones, I spent a considerable amount of time trying to research the best "bang for the buck". I am a late night gamer and I have to try to play and not disturb anyone. I read hundreds of reviews on multiple headsets. I focused only on the negatives because you look for faults not attributes when making comparisons. I decided on the EarForce X4 because no one could guarantee that their headset would work with my 360. Bottom line, I LOVE THIS HEADSET!!! Since buying the headphones, every game that I own is now a different experience. It's surprising what you miss when you can't hear anything! I am now able to play the games the way they were meant to be played. Companies don't spend that much on sound for the game to be silent! All the negatives that I read about this headset are correct at some point yet need clarification. The "buzz" people complain about is standard background noise on any speaker. Not even BOSE speakers can avoid background noise! Believe me, I own those too! But if the background noise is driving a person nuts...READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!! I had a large amount of noise that was all but eliminated, once I did what I was instructed. Removing the microphone helps as well. The headset is unbelievably comfortable. I was able to play for hours and didn't have a problem. The battery life is great as well. I have owned mine headset for 2 months and just now having to replace the batteries that were included in the package. Overall, totally awesome experience!! The only draw back is the price. Can you get away with a cheaper set...probably. But I would definitely stay with this company over any of the others!! FYI...my best friend bought a set as well after trying mine out. He is more thrilled with his headset than I am!!

    Great Sound Quality

The X4's are great for gaming and I wish they had blue-tooth so I can listen to music and stuff on my iPhone. The sound is great, you can hear everything. These headsets are perfect for CALL OF DUTY. You can hear people sneaking up on you, bomb being defused from a few feet away and even flies flying around your head. The headset is real comfortable but after a few hours your ears might be sore a bit and in the summer time you better have an AC or your headset will get real sweaty. People complain about the buzzing noise, I do hear a buzzing noise but once you start playing it gets drowned out with the game play sound. So I'm not complaining about that. But I think the buzzing happens when you plug in the mic. Now the only major problem with the X4's is the MIC. I have bought the radioshack rechargeable batteries and I guess they do not hold a strong enough charge for the mic to not work because when I bought Duracell batteries(not rechargeable) the mic only worked for a few days but there was so much battery life left that i didn't want to waste perfectly good batteries just to get a mic to work. SO IF ANYBODY KNOWS ANY GOOD RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES THAT CAN GET THE MIC TO WORK EVEN FOR A FEW DAYS POST A REVIEW PLEASE. I do recommend these headsets, but I need the mic to work on rechargeable batteries.

So far these headphones have been amazing for me. Easy setup, there are only three wires, and instruction makes is simple. _ As for sound quality, it's great. The Dolby Digital Surround sound makes for an amazing experience. I used these while playing Halo 3 and I heard things that I've never heard before. Not only that, I could tell if people were shooting from either in front of or behind me just by the sound. _ The voice chat feature is easy to use, it's set up in the same way a normal Xbox 360 headset is. The volume is set on the attachment that connects to the controller and is seperate from the in game sound. I can easily adjust either sound to what I like. _ As for comfort, the velvet and cushions on both the ears and headband make it extra comfortable. The only problem is that my neck used to ache very slightly because of the weight, but over time it stopped doing that. Just had to get used to it. _ The hissing noise that I've heard from the previous reviews isn't that noticeable, especially if you turn up the in game sound. It's just the noise cancelling in the headphone at work. I've noticed that if you aim the sensor towards you as you play, it decreases it greatly. _ Overall, a great purchase if you're really into gaming and have the 200 dollars lying around.

The surround sound emulation that comes out of these headphones has to be heard to be appreciated. It really is that good. I have no problem hearing monsters in games:) When listening to music these have a good midrange that usually isn't present in a set of wireless headphones. The optical input and Dolby Digital processing work as advertised. You can even have them hooked up to two sources, one digital and one analog. Battery life seems good too. The IR transmitter is as sensitive as some other reviews have said though. It helps if you can somehow elevate the receiver and keep it away from heat sources. Signal quality once LOS is maintained though is excellent. No interference from other wireless sources is a great plus. RF transmitters are convenient, but I have found that sound/signal quality leaves something to be desired. These IR headphones have none of those problems. I can easily recommend these to anyone looking to get a set of headphones to listen to late night movies and game without waking the neighbors...or spouses:)

This is a great headset. It is more comfortable then any xbox headset offered from microsoft, it removes the necessity for raising the volume late at night only to wake up parents, kids or roommates and its a great alternative to buying a surround sound system. The wireless works very well, my headset works upstairs in my house when the xbox is in the basement. The sound is good and the mic is very sensative. This thing is packed with great features my favorites are the independent communication and game volume and the digital surround sound. I would like to see some improvements though, more bass, less price, wireless from the controller to the headset, maybe a rechargable battery pack that works off of USB ports would be a great start, but thats just me nitpicking(and trying really hard to find something bad about this thing). Overall, not the best bang for your buck, but a great find.

This unit is absolutely one of the best sounding headset's you will hear. If you are not satisfied with the sound quality then you are out of luck cause it doesn't get much better than this! As far as the "buzz" sound I read about from other reviewers, you are going to hear some feedback from headset's, especially wireless. with my particular unit it's only heard when the volume is all the way down. I have had no problems to date but I have only had it for 1 week. It is a bit pricey but then again, sometimes, you get what you pay for! I would recommend this unit to any serious gamer. If you need to keep the cost down go for the "x3" Half the price but you sacrifice surround sound. The unit is also very sharp looking! looks great sitting their next to other components! Unit is a little fragile so just take care while gameing and kinda baby it a lil' and you will have no problems.

I play just about all the online shooter games and some of you just might recognize my nane. I've been thru just about every headset made by far this one is the best quality. You really can hear your enemys sneaking up, and all of those sound effects taken for granted. Great product! Now for some criticism. AAA bateries come on. For $200 bucks and xbox compatible try rechargable battery pack that fits your controllers. Way to go Turtle Beach and squeaze your customers a little more. I do have some buzzing if I get too close to my plazma, so keep your distance. So far after one week of use every night my wife, kids and neighbors thank-you for a product well bought. Hopefully this hepls all you gamers out their and some dumb designer at Turtle Beach who should listen to the the Consumer/Gamer who buys and uses these products.

A little pricy, but well worth it. This headset is perfect for people, like me, who play late at night while the wife is sleeping. The first thing I noticed was sound that I had never heard on the games I play. The sound is very clear and the bass is more than adequate. Set up was very simple, though I switched out the optical cable that came with it. I noticed a hum when I hooked it up, but that went away when I switched to a better optical cable. There is a slight hiss through the headset when there is no sound. Once any sound kicks in the hiss is completely gone. I find the headset comfortable and the controls well placed. It's nice that you can still hear your friends over the sound of the game when you're talking.

Best purchase I have EVER made for anything gaming-related. The X4's are simply awe-inspiring! The Dolby sound is spot-on--I can hear every single sound in the game, which is especially beneficial on Xbox Live. I could not be happier with the overall sound, build quality, easy of use, and all those extra features (such as CHAT BOOST) that Turtle Beach threw into this package. I actually think the price is too low! Oh and, for those who say that they're having problems with a hissing sound, that can easily be remedied by making sure you don't have the X4 transmitter too close to a plasma TV. Also, you have to point the transmitter DIRECTLY at you when you're playing. Gotta read the manual!

Well for all you skeptics out there, The turtle beach X4's Are way better than the Astro 40's. For instance the astros have Over id say 8 cords. And they are 300 BUCKS!! You can ge the X4's that are even better than Astros for 100 bucks cheaper. And the X4s only have 2 cords. The X4's are very Comfortable, have great sourround sound and are even better for movies. Yes you can hook these up to a standard DVD player and experience the Sourround sound experience for a fraction of the cost. Also if you have that Annoying wife or woman that complains to you that the tv is too loud. Get these they are comfortable and Your wife wont Complain. Hope you found this review Helpful.

This headset is Amazing, everything that made the X3's so great is back. Plus it has Dolby Surround, AWSOME....the sound quality on this headset is even better than on the X3's. The bass is deeper, the sound is richer, the comfort on this headset is amazing, I played the other night for 5 hours straight and still had no ear discomfort. When you have this headset you know exactly where everyone is, it is virtually impossible for your enemies to sneek up on you. You will hear everysingle nuance in the game, I can not say it enough this headset is a must buy. Turtle Beach just keeps making great products.

My friend let me try out this headset and i love it waaaayyyy more then my microsoft wireless headset. Its way more comfortable. The sound is so good on Cod WAW you can hear enemies defusing the bomb on search and destroy very clearly and easily. The sound is so good with details you can hear nearby footsteps. This mic is expensive but worth every penny. There is a bass boost option on this headset that allows the wearer to hear the explosions way better and with a more real rumble. I would reccomend this to gamers that want to take their gaming to the next level and focus on their game while talking to friends.

This product I researched on the web. It got great reviews from magazines and the such but I didn't find any actual reviews from people who purchased the product. Everyone said it was mind blowing. They were pretty good, with the exception of a hissing sound. If you have surrond sound hooked up to your system its like that but with earphones. Odds are your surrond blows the headphones away. Oh and the bass boost didn't really boost anything. I think I will keep these because they get the job done. Wish I could find a way to get rid of the hissing but I could get over it.

Bought this for $200 thinking it'd be around the same as an astro mic. Set it up easily, first day it worked fine. The sound was fine and everything else was working, then I was waiting in a lobby and started getting static. Thought it'd go away, it did for a bit then came back. When I talk to people on xbox live, my voice is muffled with this mic but not the Microsoft one. If I put it on mute, it makes a buzzing sound anyway. If you're going to get a mic for gaming, I'd look around for a better mic first.

The Turtle Beach X4 5.1 Surround Sound Headset is perfect for Xbox 360. Combined with the 5.1 Doly Logic II decoder and 50mm deep bass speakers this headset is just what a Pro Gamer would need. Me being oO_OM3GA_R3D_Oo (#3 in the world on COD4 on 360) I need to be able to keep my game up all the time. Averaging around 8-9 hours I need to have Headphones that provide confort at all times. The X4's easily meet this need. I Highly recommend the Turtle Beach X4's to anyone who can afford them.

It took some time to find a good location for the transmitter in relation to my plasma tv. The manual did say that plasma's cause interference. It took some time to find a good location for the transmitter, behind the plasma and off to the side worked well. Once I did, watch out. These sound better than any headset I've ever used. 200 bucks is worth the price if you have anything other than a plasma, but I would still like to pay less!

This thing kicks butt. The bass is rich and the sound is great. I regret not creating the idea of these headphones because I use to take my old headset and place my old over the ear headphone on top of it, connecting the headphones to my receiver, making it easier for me to play at night. Turtle beach has now created this awesome headphone/headset. It uses infrared technology, making it crisp and static free.

Best Headset i've ever used. If you're thinking about the X1, Forget it, i had the X1's and then i upgraded. These are Wireless, EXTREMELY Comfortable, Great sound. Ex: On some of the maps on CoD4 there are dumpsters (IE: Showdown) you can hear flies circling around you) Literally Because of the surround sound. It's like sitting in at the movies and playing you favorite games. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
