Customers are saying

Customers recognize the Smart Light Tube-Flex 200 RGB LED Gen II as bright, easy to use, and highly customizable, with many praising the app integration for creating unique light patterns. However, some customers found the length of the light strip to be insufficient for their needs and felt the price was too high for the length provided. The vibrant RGB LED colors were a popular feature, though some wished for even more customization options. Concerns were also raised about the inability to extend the light strip's length.

One thing you need to make sure before buying is that you can’t change the pattern as easily as you think. This requires mounting and potentially screws, but for now I’m relying on the 3M stickers provided in the box.

    Cool Controllable Decoration Lights

The Twinkly Flex lights are very cool. They would be great in a dorm room. They look great and you can display some amazing effects. You can change the colors (basically all different colors of the RGB rainbow) and program a wide range of color changing, movement, and strobing effects. The lit strand is 7 feet long, while the power cord with integrated controller (just a push button that skips through the 6 presets) extends an additional 12 feet. The kit comes with several paper patterns to show how to set up shapes such as Xmas tree, cactus, or spelling “love” in cursive or you can shape the flexible led strip into whatever design you want. If you had more than one strip they could be linked through the app to make even bigger designs and effects. The flexible led strip only lights up on one side so it’s really designed to be mounted on a wall. You could attach it to a window with say tape, but you would only see the colors from one side. The kit comes with a small set of brackets, screws, and adhesive squares for mounting on the wall. The downloadable control app (Android and iOS) allows a great deal of options for your light display. The app can connect to the Twinkly Flex lights by Bluetooth or WiFi. Basically, you use your phone to take a picture of the light strip and the app will map the shape of your lights, from there you can make all kinds of adjustments and edit or create your own color or effect patterns. There is also an on/off timer, which is important since the only other way to turn the Flex lights on or off is by unplugging the strip. The app can also sync color patterns with music and control multiple Twinkly brand devices. The flex lights are designed to work with Hey Google and Alexa if you use those services. So, overall the Twinkly Flex lights are pretty cool and fun. But, there are a few negative issues that I have with the Twinkly Flex lights. The included safety warnings in the manual do say that these Twinkly Flex lights are for seasonal use only and are not to be left plugged in when you leave. Maybe this is just a legal statement to protect Twinkly from liability, but it is a bit concerning in regard to the long term durability of the product. Also of concern is the overly intrusive nature of the control app with regard to privacy. The app requires creating an account with password, email address, and requires sharing device location data. The app’s privacy rules do mention some vague use of location data in relation to marketing. I can’t understand why using the app to control the Twinkly Flex lights should require that kind of privacy intrusion and there doesn’t seem to be any way to opt out of it and still use the app. The good news is that you do not absolutely need to use the app in order to use the Flex lights. But, without the app you are limited to about 6 preset patterns and you won’t be able to adjust the colors of those presets either, so still usable but very limited. In summary, I actually really like the Twinkly Flex lights and I like the control app, but why does the app need to be so invasive to my privacy?

Beautiful lights, but temporary usage only

I really wanted to like these lights. I had a spot behind my headboard all planned out, and this was just the right length. The cord was exactly long enough to not need an extension cord. The lights themselves are nice and bright, the colors really pop. The built-in color changing programs are mesmerizing and pleasing to watch as they cycle. I was able to install the app and connect to the lights easily enough. The lights also came with some useful mounting hardware. Everything seemed perfect, until I read the manual where it stated that these lights should only be used in a seasonal way, not meant to be permanently installed, and should be unplugged when not in use. This throws out my use case entirely. So now, I'll break it out maybe on the holidays or for parties, but I can't use it for permanent bedroom ambiance like I was intending. Because nothing spoils the moment like having to say "wait, baby, let me just plug these lights in and then wait a little bit for them to connect to the app so that I can put on the mood lighting." And plugging them in beforehand is just, well, presumptuous.

The rating is IP20 which means it protected from touch, but not from water. I had thought to use this for an outside holiday display, but after a closer reading of the specs, that idea was dashed. It's nice that the setup can be done with bluetooth, but further customization requires that you either give up your wifi password or you talk only to the controller. Now that's not a bad option (I hate giving up my wifi password to random organizations after having an earlier instance leaked to the dark web which meant changing the password of dozens of IOT devices), but it's very cumbersome in practice. If, knowing these drawbacks, you still want a very nice, bright, and independently controllable light tube that can be bent and twisted, this is the product for you. I still plan to use this on our Christmas tree as an alternative to the normal light strands.

    Goodbye Neon Signs..

This is such a pain free way to get a solid accent light setup with a fantastic amount of programing options. You can use anything from pre-programed options like sound input reactions from voice or music inputs to something that can blend in naturally with any custom shape you form it to. You can easily hide it or treat it like it’s a customizable neon sign. And it works perfectly with Razer Synapse to be perfectly in tune with all components, inside and out, of your computer. My only personal complaint is that you can’t add more length to an existing unit. Although I completely understand the safety reasons as to why that would be a bad idea for this. But maybe a pro unit of this with a bigger transformer, specific guidelines on installation, etc., may not be a bad idea?

Great set of lights, but not many use cases

I’m honestly not sure how useful this light string really is. Its only 7 feet, so it can’t even go around most windows, few tvs, not many desks, etc. The lights themselves work well and do everything that is advertised, but as a practical matter, I can’t find a good use for them. The plug is a bit bulky and has both a large adapter and a fairly large controller / button. You really can’t put it discreetly under a shelf for room lighting. Multiple lines can only be connected “virtually”. Basically, they can not be connected at all, but if you have a lighting display you can coordinate multiple lines together. Then again, you would need a separate plug for each line, and again its pretty bulky and you’d need a lot of sequential plugs along a wall or a huge power strip to handle all the plugs. Its nice to be able to use your phone, but without a remote as well, it means you really have to use your phone, which means its really a preprogramed decoration since not everyone who would want to use it as an actual light would have the app. Yes, its connected to google if you want, but the options are fairly limited. If you want to have just actual lighting, a dumb light strip is so much cheaper and you can customize your length a lot easier. The app does let you do some cool things and gives you a pretty good and fairly user-friendly way to make patterns that you might otherwise think would take a lot of in depth programming knowledge. But, for a 7 foot string there really isn’t many patterns you can really make. I can see how a long string with more lights may help you really step up your Christmas decorating game and give you other pretty cool lighting possibilities, but I just don’t see the point in this 7 foot version.

    Blew me away

I've got LED's everywhere in the house. Wifi enabled smart lights in every single socket. In the places I couldn't use a bulb I have a ceiling light or floor lamp. I can voice control everything in every room, change colors, via app or voice. I've got LED strips in different locations that are smart and dumb, remote only for some. I thought I was pretty well versed in LED strips and what to expect. Then Trinkly arrived via the UPS truck. And thus began my education of how COOL and FUN a light strip could be. I had no idea what I was getting into. I simply assumed this, from the cursory look I gave it before ordering it, to be another LED strip, with some kind of app control. It looked to be a smoother light gradient than the normal ones, which was the reason I wanted to give it a try. It allowed, during setup, either direct Wi-Fi control, or to let it connect to the house Wi-Fi and run it that way through the home's wireless network. I opted for that option, and it was fine. Then it wanted me to map the light strip. I had no idea why it wanted to do this, since I still didn't really understand what Twinkly was. So I did it. Then I started playing with the options, and I began to understand the awesome beauty of this device. Since that mapping of the pose you put the light strip in is how the app knows what LED's to cycle in what order for the effects that go top to bottom, or side to side. And it appears to be, so far as all my testing has been, absolutely flawless. It doesn't matter what shape I twist this into, how many loops or how many hills and valleys. When I select effects then to play, they all are perfect, heights all coinciding with each other, valleys all terminating correctly. When something moves from top to bottom it's just a joy to watch since no matter WHAT shape I've put this in, the effect just WORKS. The brightness control at first seems pretty standard, but it is more granular than many lights, and it can do a dimmer level than I expected. Bright is bright, but dim - LED's often don't do well with DIM. They often can't get to a really low light level, and usually is not much darker than just a few percent lower than 50%. Often you can go from 100% down to about 40%, then it just turns off. This gets MUCH closer to the single digits when you drop brightness down. Much more noticeable than the other LED strips I've had. The sound option blew me away. No matter what it was hearing, me talking, coughing, whistling, a TV show, music, the response speed was just amazingly quick. It has a schedule option, which appears to work well. And when it was going, I force quit the app on my iPhone so that I could verify that the programming details were set on the device, not just being relayed from the phone. And nope, it did NOT turn off according to schedule when the app was closed. When I reopened the app for more testing, it asked me for a firmware update, which I ran. After that, I set a schedule, force killed the app, and the lights turned on at the correct time, and turned off at the scheduled time. That was what I was hoping for, so that I could put this in my window over the holidays and have it do something at night whether or not I'm home to control it. The only downside is that it only offers a single schedule option, one on, one off cycle in a day. I would have liked if I could have added additional on/off schedules in a single day, but I'm guessing this is a limitation of the available memory on the unit itself to run itself when the phone app isn't around doing it directly. It's not often I find an actual 5 star product, but this one was, in every respect. I like it so much that I may have to get creative and buy another of these, and a few of the other normal Christmas light strings, and do some unique light displays this coming holiday season.

Very creative & customizable for simpler designs! The Twinkly Tube-Flex really shows off the latest technology in LED strips with a fantastic variety of colors from the LEDs and has almost unlimited customization available from the app. As other reviews have noted, the length of the light strip limits the designs that can be created, so plan to use a design that will work with the limits of the strip. The lighting display itself is very fluid as the light from each LED is diffused by the strip covering – in other words you don’t see individual lights on the strip which makes the lighting effect very smooth and “tube like” instead of showing individual points of light. This is a nice effect and it looks like “fluid light” flowing through the strip – even when using a “sparkle light” effect. Mounting brackets are provided if you want to make a permanent display, but I have settled for a foam backboard to avoid drilling holes in the wall until I have settled on a design for permanent display. The power cord is long enough to allow the light strip to be fairly high on the wall, but the cord is standard size and is clearly visible coming off the light strip. All these are things to keep in mind when planning a display with the Tube-Flex – it is so customizable with pretty much unlimited light patterns that your ideas for designs will always need to consider the length and flexibility of the strand, and your connection to the power supply. The light cable is flexible enough to create a curved design, but “right angle” corners will always have a little curve to them. Build quality seems excellent as the cables and controls seem very durable and should last a long time. Indoor use only for this particular product. Setup took almost no time, and after downloading the app to my phone and turning on the light strip, pairing with my home network was successful and allows full “remote control” of the light strip through the phone app. It even integrated with my Alexa, although now it is only possible to turn the strip on and off, adjust the brightness of the lights, and change to a solid color. Telling Alexa to load a specific pattern (other than a solid color) still does not seem to work, but maybe an upgrade for the app will come along to allow changing patterns with a voice command. Once the light strip is set up and connected to the app, you might end up spending a lot of time “playing around” to see the different patterns and creating your own patterns and colors. The app really shines for this, as you have a “light mapping” function that allows you to control the entire strand down to the individual lights. I found a lot of patterns that can be downloaded, and although they are for all the different Twinkly light products, those that are not specifically for the Tube-Flex still work and can be modified with the app. The Tube-Flex is a lot of fun and a very colorful and customizable light strip. If you can stick with a design that can work with the length of the strip and manage the power cord, you should have a lot of fun trying different patterns or making your own display pattern. Regards from Central Georgia!

The next best thing from twinkly! There are so many things you can do with this flex led tube light. Designs on the wall, under or over cabinet lighting, accent furniture, computer and gaming lighting. Make your own patterns and colors or use the preset ones. The app is great to use to control all the Twinkly lights. It would be nice if they offered longer lengths or the ability to connect multiple ropes together. Also the ability to switch the direction the light flows in would be great. I can't wait to see what they put out next!

My 8 year old is using these lights for fun and for a night light. Since getting them he can't wait to get to bed and turn them on. Its great because the app is able to remotely turn them on and off or set a timer so they aren't on all night. For fun we have made crazy designs and then use the FX Wizard in the app to create our own effects and endless color combinations. The app is very intuitive as it uses your camera to input how you have the lights designed on the wall. Once you have the effect designed you are then able to save it and come back to it over an over. The app also has a Twinkly Effects Store to download several out of the box effects. Overall we have found the app to be very responsive and instant communication with the lights over Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi setup was a little frustrating though. The app seemed to lock up and it took several attempts but once it connected the lights to our Wi-Fi we haven't had any issues. The cord for the lights is plenty long to get to your nearest outlet and the built in hand held controller is also convenient for the kids to change the light effects on their own. Overall I would say this would make a great Christmas gift for your kids.
