I grabbed this for work - I'm a BCBA and we use iPads for data collection and notes; not having a keyboard is not an option, and the fact that I work with kids means I need something that will protect the iPad from sticky fingers and angry hands. This seems to fit the bill! Pros: - trackpad: holy cow, I don't know how many times I've gone from my iPad to my old folio case with a bluetooth keyboard, caught myself trying to use the trackpad, and realizing I didn't have one. Super handy! The only thing I DON'T like about the trackpad is there's no way to use it to close/switch between apps, at least that I've figured out. Minor inconvenience, but worth noting. - battery life: I have been using it all (work) week this week, didn't even charge it out of the box, and it is not showing any signs of a drained battery. It comes with a charging cable, but not a wall charger, just an FYI, but nowadays that's pretty standard. - set up: it took like 10 seconds to sync and set up the keyboard - suuuper easy to figure out without even reading the directions! Cons: - Price: my co-workers were quite jealous of my new toy when I brought it in, but when I told them what the MSRP was, they weren't quite as jealous. Yeah, it's a great case and seems very durable, but it still seems a bit steep for what it does. - Flap: it definitely took me several minutes to figure out how to prop up the iPad - the whole thing was really awkward at first. Once I figured it out, it made sense and is now super easy, but the way to prop up the iPad isn't that intuitive, and the instructions aren't super clear. - Stability: not really a con specific to this particular case/folio (more to the style overall - I've had this issue with pretty much every folio case), but unless the iPad is sitting on a sturdy, flat surface, it is very hard to keep the flap in place to keep the iPad propped up. That being said, most people probably aren't trying to type while it is sitting in their lap, so most people won't have this issue.

    Protection, Functionality, Convenience

The UAG Rugged Bluetooth Keyboard Folio case for iPad adds very useful keyboard and trackpad functionality, and provides heavy-duty protection. It’s not inexpensive or lightweight, but it is rugged, convenient, and versatile. The keyboard features comfortably-spaced keys and a spacebar that is compact but not too small. The dedicated function keys (media play/pause, volume, home screen, lock, Siri, etc.) are convenient and intuitive. The trackpad is responsive, supports multi-touch gestures, and has a satisfying click to it. For use in darker rooms, the backlighting is helpful, and the ability to change the color or brightness is a nice touch. This product is two separate pieces – the protective case that snaps onto the iPad, and the folio that includes the keyboard and cover (which doubles as a stand). Magnets hold the two together, and also secure the stand in place during use. It took a little bit of getting used to, but the connections feel secure, and it’s very convenient to open, close, separate, and change viewing angles. Plus, when I don’t need a keyboard, I can easily pop the iPad and case out of the folio and still have some protection around the edges. UAG certainly took “rugged” seriously when designing this product. The whole thing feels very well-built, and when snapped closed with the magnet flap, seems like it will protect my iPad (and itself) from a moderate fall or bump. The flip side of that is that this is not a lightweight product. It weighs about two pounds, which doesn’t sound like a lot on paper, but the 10.2” iPad only weighs about a pound, so you’re tripling the overall carry weight. It also more than doubles the thickness. Still, I find the overhead to be worth it considering all of the added functionality and protection. I will note that this keyboard does NOT draw power from the iPad like other products on the market that utilize the Smart Connector. That’s good for not draining the iPad battery, but does mean you need to charge it separately, via USB-C connector. Nowadays, that’s common enough that I don’t ever travel without a USB-C cable. However, if you’re used packing only a Lightning cable, you might be surprised. I’ll also mention that the stand is best used on a flat, sturdy surface. I’ve gotten it to balance on my lap for a few minutes of quick use, but that’s not really how it’s intended to work, and feels pretty unstable when used that way. Overall, I’m very happy with the UAG Rugged Bluetooth Keyboard Folio case for iPad. It allows me to do a more with my iPad, provides a lot of protection, and the design is convenient and easy to use.

UAG rugged Bluetooth ipad case with keyboard is awesome, soft touch keys makes it nice to be on my ipad & not make noise late at night, comfortable & back lit it has changeable color options. You can connect up to two devices which has come in handy in my house. The keyboard also water proof liquids can’t get under the keys. The case that houses the iPad has a black bumper with a clear backing & has a spot to hold your Apple Pencil, the cover is a strong magnetic that closes onto the case the keyboard folds over onto the front of the iPad. Keyboard has a full size trackpad like on a laptop. Cover folds over like a triangle that is adjustable so your iPad leans against the keypad no worries about it sliding makes it feels like you using a laptop. The case is slim nice for travel fits perfect in backpack & side pack it is a little heavier then I expected but not overwhelming. Very durable I did actually drop my iPad for the first time ever so glad it was in the case I did panic but nothing happen to my iPad I did scratch the case but no damage to the keyboard. It is quick & easy set up it also comes with usb-c charging cable. For the keyboard it must be charged the battery life has lasted me about a week so far I haven’t had to recharge it, has sleep mode if not used after a few mins. The Bluetooth set up was fast to both of our iPads. Couldn’t be happier with my new case

I have owned a couple of Bluetooth keyboards. This by far exceed every expectation I’ve come to build over numerous amounts of keyboards I’ve worn down. This keyboard has a trackpad which works great with your iPad. Usually you’d have to stop, hold your screen, and press on the desired area with your finger. The trackpad eliminates this and it feels more like a laptop after that which initially, they aimed to replace. The battery lasts a couple of days of heavy use. Speaking of heavy use, it’s rugged as can be for being a wireless keyboard. I’m actually writing the review with this and highly enjoy the feel of the keys. You can control the volume and lock your iPad with the buttons located on the uppermost part of the keyboard. What’s really cool is you can separate the keyboard from the iPad and it’s protected with the case. It snaps on magnetically which makes it a breeze to move back and forth. It eliminates the need for an extra cover like I used to used when I’d switch back and forth from keyboard to just my regular iPad. It charges via USB Type-C. It’s simple yet elegant and that’s a big deal when paring with a product like the Apple iPad. Apple being a company who focuses on simplicity and cutting out the clutter. This adds to that simplicity and elegance all while adding that very thick layer of protection that is its rugged case. Highly recommend this workhorse of a keyboard!

This case is very rugged, there is a hard plastic inner case that easily slides over the iPad that will indeed protect it from accidental drops. The outer case is stylish and looks modern. That being said, the case is a little bulky, but not overly bulky. The case is tough without making my iPad look like a “work” or tough case. The hard case is detachable so it does not interfere with the camera. The inner case is held on by a magnetic pad that holds the iPad in place when it is attached to the outer closure. The keyboard is responsive and connected to my iPad quite easily. The touchpad is also responsive and works really well. The keyboard connected to the iPad quickly via bluetooth with minimal setup and it makes my iPad feel like a laptop. It is a good looking case! Overall, this case is really nice. It is rugged and protects the iPad without getting in the way of the camera, volume buttons, and the power button. I like this case a lot, and will definitely recommend it to friends and family.

If you're looking for something to help turn your iPad into a "laptop" to get some work done, this keyboard case will certainly get you there...at the cost of being a tank. Seriously...this thing is bulky. Getting your iPad into the case is dead simple - the part the iPad fits into is its own separate piece which magnetizes to the rest of the folio. I appreciate this; there are definitely times and places that I want to use my iPad as a tablet without the keyboard attached (reading a book, browsing YouTube in bed, etc.). The way the tablet magnetizes to the rest of the case takes some getting used to, though. The folding mechanism is unlike any other case I've used, and it still takes me 2 or 3 tries to get everything to stick as I like it. The keyboard and trackpad are fantastic. The keys have good travel and spacing, making it pretty easy to type on, despite everything being smaller than a standard keyboard to fit the iPad's dimensions. I have no complaints about the trackpad either; the iPad recognizes it instantly and it responds to all of the standard gestures. I also appreciate the backlighting and the fact that it has multiple colors and stages. Another thing I find handy is the Apple Pencil holder - it's been nice always having it at the ready when I need it, instead of having to dig around in my bag. The downside, though? It's bulky. So, so bulky. The case itself feels heavier than the iPad, and when everything is put together, the combination of the case and iPad is heavier than a few of the laptops I have around the house. You definitely feel it in your bag, too. I imagine this bulkiness provides ample protection for drops and dings if you routinely use your iPad for things where this is an issue...but as someone who only uses it in the office, at the coffee shop, or at home, I'm not all that concerned about protection. In summary: performance is great. Build quality is bulky. If protection matters to you more than portability, this is a fit. If you value portability more, you might want to skip this one.

There are many keyboard case options available for iPad, so what does the new UAG Metropolis Keyboard Folio bring to the party? I’ll share my experience with this new case/keyboard combo, in hopes that it will help you decided if it’s right for you. My previous experience with iPad cases includes case-only options, which are only for the purpose of providing protection, and case/keyboard combos like the Metropolis. I’ve also tried the keyboard-only option, which doesn’t provide any protection for the iPad. The first thing you encounter with the Metropolis is the case that goes around the back of the iPad. It’s a hard shell plastic case, similar to those provided by Otterbox and other companies. The Metropolis adds a slide-in clip at the top of the case for your Apple Pencil. Other cases have featured a stretchy cloth loop for this purpose, but those inevitably fail when you need them most. The plastic clip on the Metropolis is grippy and feels very secure. It’s a very good design. Putting the iPad inside the case is easy, and it’s also easy to get it back out of the case. This is important to me because there are times when I want the iPad to be as thin and light as possible, so I don’t always want to carry around the extra bulk and weight of a case. After all, isn’t that part of the reason we buy iPads? The rest of the case is made of a rubber-like material, with a ribbed texture on the outside. This provides a really good grip that feels secure in your hand. The keyboard folds up to cover the face of the iPad, while another flap wraps around the back of the iPad, attaching with the use of magnets. There is also a flap that goes over the top, where the Apple Pencil is held, and this then attaches to the front of the case using another magnet. In total, it provides a very secure package to protect the iPad. In my opinion, protection is what the Metropolis Keyboard Case does best. While I wouldn’t want to drop my iPad, I feel confident that if I did so while it was in this case, it would be very well protected. Let’s talk about the keyboard itself. Pairing is easy, and the Metropolis adds the convenience of pairing with 2 devices at the same time. On a road trip, this would allow you to switch back and forth between your phone and iPad, if you needed to do that. Once connected, you’re ready to start using the keyboard. The keyboard isn’t full-sized, since this would exceed the width of the iPad, but the keys are nicely spaced so that it doesn’t feel too cramped. The keys provide a nice level of tactile feedback and typing feels really good. In spite of how thin the keyboard part is, it still gives a nice typing experience. I typed this review on the keyboard, and it was a good experience. UAG did not use hinges on this one, instead using the back part of the cover to form a wedge that props up the iPad. Magnets hold it in place, and also allow 4 different viewing angles. This requires a little more space on a desk or on your lap, but it also allows the keyboard to be folded back out of the way if you want to use the iPad without pulling the whole case apart and needing to stow it somewhere. This is like the whole “kickstand” approach, so keep that in mind when deciding. It’s nice to have access to a trackpad with the keyboard, but unfortunately this is where the Metropolis keyboard still needs to improve. The trackpad is a nice size, but it is not smooth when scrolling. It was difficult to get a web page to scroll smoothly using gestures on the trackpad. That could be partly due to the materials used, or it could be the trackpad itself. I’m not sure, but it did make for a less than pleasant experience and made me want to just scroll by touching the screen itself. One characteristic that I’ve noticed with other third-party trackpads, and which I found on the Metropolis as well, is the fact that it is too responsive to taps. Repeatedly while typing, an inadvertent tap would send my cursor to another part of the document, where my keystrokes then landed, messing up the text. Even worse, sometimes the cursor goes off into the ether, and my keystrokes go nowhere. I assume this is also due to the sensitive trackpad, but in this case the cursor must be somewhere off screen. I also have the Brydge Max keyboard case, and that one allows me to turn off taps, which greatly improved the overall experience, even if it made things a little less convenient. UAG needs to add the ability to do this, as it’s maddening to have to continually undo typing and get the cursor back to where it should be. The keyboard is backlit, but UAG has gone to the next level here. You can choose the intensity of the backlight, but you can also choose from 7 different colors. This is by no means important, but it’s a fun touch that makes it a little more interesting. Support is sparse at best. There is a “manual” that does include instructions for pairing and a key listing, which is good. I suppose that’s all you really need, but they don’t even mention the settings that are available within the general settings area, which would have been nice. There’s also not an app or any way to receive a firmware update that I can tell, so hopefully that won’t be necessary. If you’re looking for a keyboard case that provides great protection, this is a good option. It’s a little bulkier than I liked, but the rugged case really feels good. The word “rugged” is in their marketing, so it’s safe to say that’s what they were going for. I really like this case, but I’m not sure I can recommend spending $140 on it. The keyboard itself and the rest of the case are very good, but the trackpad ruins what is otherwise a solid offering. The plastic Brydge Max+ case has an equally good keyboard, but the trackpad is great, and I can turn off the annoying “tap to click”. It’s also a bit less bulky, if that’s important to you. I don’t feel like that one would provide the protection that the Metropolis would, so if that’s most important to you, I think you’d prefer this one. For me, this is a nice keyboard case that isn’t quite there yet. In my opinion, this is a 3-star case that would easily gain another star if UAG can fix the issues with the trackpad. I would give it a conditional recommendation, but Best Buy doesn’t offer that option, so for now I have to go with a “no”.

Good Keyboard Case That Falls Behind Competition

I wanted to love this case, but there are just too many things that keep from being the ultimate Ipad case. Before I get into the negatives let me start with the positives. The case is very well built, when you take the Ipad out of the keyboard the hard case that protects the Ipad is very nice and well built it is not too heavy so it will not make you feel fatigued holding it that way for long. The full size keyboard is great you have access to pretty much everything you need and the trackpad works well. Now let me start with what I did not like, First off their is no way to prop up the ipad without using the flap with the keyboard, which if you using it in bed or on a couch make it hard to use. On a table or hard surface this not a problem. I understand this case is made to work with previous gen Ipads therefore it does not use the ipads connecter and I think this hurts, there were times where I had a bit delay in registering my inputs as it has to connect to the Ipad through bluetooth. The buttons on the keyboard are not the most comfortable feeling they feel a little mushy to me but that is a small complaint. The case is when folded up is also pretty thick I understand this is a rugged case but overall it makes the Ipad pretty heavy. If you have a newer Ipad there are some other keyboard cases that use the connecter and have a kick stand on the case so you can separate the Ipad from the keyboard and still use it. I think these are much better but if you have an older gen Ipad and need a keyboard case this one can serve you well.

Thoughtful design for a protective case + keyboard

My tech hubris caught up with me with the UAG iPad keyboard - I took the shell and keyboard out of the box, slapped them on my iPad, and headed out the door for an extended day at the office. And I hated it. I tried to stand it up and type while at the office, and I couldn't figure it out. At first, I was about to write it off as just a shortcoming. When I got home, I checked the instructions and found that I hadn't been folding up the 'stand' part of the folio correctly. Once I got past my assumptions and read the instructions, I found that the design of the UAG Metropolis is actually pretty nice. The protective shell is not too cumbersome on its own. It feels like it offers substantial drop protection and has magnets built in which mate up to the folding cover. The magnets offer several different points to attach the folding cover and thus different levels of tilt. The keyboard is backlit and the integrated trackpad is 'good enough' without being remarkable in any way. The complete package ends up being a little too bulky for my taste, which is the main reason I can't quite give it a full 5 stars. Still, this is definitely a product I would recommend if you want to get something with solid drop protection for the tablet and have that easily be removable from the keyboard.

UAG is no joke wow. When they say rugged folio and case, they mean rugged. My ipad feels so safe and secure inside of this beast of a folio case. It's so secure and looks so nice. It's definitely a must have in my book. The fit is perfect. Color scheme is nice. Design is great. I like the sleekness of it, especially the vertical lines on the case. The keyboard itself is what you'd expect from a folio keyboard, but it's good, it works. Don't expect a mechanical keyboard by any means, but it does the job. The trackpad works nicely as well. It really makes your ipad act like a laptop which is a nice convenience to have. The main con I have with this is if it's affordable at MSRP for what you get. It's really nice but is it worth the amount it's worth? Overall I say yes, it's just we're used to the really cheap online prices from ebay/Amazon. It feels really nice to use. I like the material a lot and I am pleasantly surprised. I've used this at home so far and it's nice as expected, but even tried using it on the bus and no issues whatsoever. No qualms that I can think of.

This is a great keyboard for your iPad. It works great and the setup was simple. You connect to bluetooth and enter the code like you would with any bluetooth connection and you're typing in right away. It helps turn the iPad into almost a near laptop replacement. The keyboard works exactly as you'd want a keyboard to. The trackpad works like it would on a computer and is intuitive. Putting the iPad into the case and then attaching it to the keyboard, the magnets are extremely strong. It's a very protective case. If I had one complaint it would be that I wish there was a strap or something to hold the case closed when you're not using it. Essentially, the trackpad replaces your finger swiping across the screen. You click the icons or links as you would tap on the screen. If you're like me and most of your time is basic web browsing then this is the keyboard for you. It works as you want it to and you get what you expect. It turns your iPad into a near laptop replacement, which most people might want to use it for. I would recommend it to most people.
