Customers are saying

Customers recognize the HYPERBOOM's exceptional sound quality, encompassing rich bass and impressive volume, even at high levels. Its long battery life and portability are also frequently praised, making it ideal for various settings. However, some find the speaker's weight and price to be drawbacks. The positive feedback on sound quality and battery life significantly outweighs concerns about weight and cost.

The UA Hyperboom is UA latest entrance into the portable USB speaker market. This monster sports dual 4.5” woofers, dual 3.5”x7.5” radiators, and dual 1” dome tweeters crammed into a 14”x7.5”x7.5” cubiod. Inside this monolith is a rechargeable battery that claims up to 24 hours of music. There’s no blinky lights, flashy trim or gimmicky features to be found, but rather a simple, unobtrusive aesthetic all in black. The relatively large bluetooth speaker is a somewhat ‘new’ market. Compact bluetooth speakers really caught on years ago, and adding batteries to them made total sense, to offer the same portability as the devices they connect to. It makes sense to see the evolution of this segment into both smaller, but in this case much larger speakers. The larger size sacrifices the portability for larger sound, battery life, and expanded features. Some manufacturers have started intruding on the public address (PA) speaker space with some of their offerings. Ultimate Ears however seems to embrace the modern minimalistic style, keeping with a device you could throw in the trunk, tote to the beach, or carry to a neighbors party without the need for strength training. In fact, the Hyperboom’s carry strap is not only effective, but quite comfortable, and blends in right with the device when not in use. Overall it’s still heavy, coming in at 13lbs, but not too heavy. In the box you find the speaker, a 90w power (brick) supply, and the getting started guide. The guide covers all the now relatively intuitive interface covers. In fact, on first boot, the speaker uses a voice prompt to tell you what to do, including to download the BOOM app. Luckily, once you pair with it, which was as simple as going to bluetooth settings and selecting ‘HYPERBOOM’, it prompts you and links you to the app store to download the app (at least on iPhone). The app is useful, insomuch that it allows you to adjust a simple 5 band equalizer, switch sources (between the available bluetooth 1, 2, optical, and auxiliary), and enable the adaptive EQ. Also - due to the magic of bluetooth LE, you can remotely power on the speaker with the app. This is my favorite feature, as it means you don’t need to turn it on manually. The remote app is unobtrusive and functional. You can even setup the app to launch either Amazon Music, Apple Music, or Deezer to play predefined playlists with a touch of a button - either in the app or on the speaker. All in all, the software is well executed. As for the adaptive eq, this uses a microphone (found towards the back near the lift strap) to listen to the environment and adjust the EQ to optimize the sound for the environment. This seems to be a relatively low impact feature, as either in the garage, outdoors, or indoors any adjustments made were minimal. Turning it off exhibited some minor changes in quality, but I felt like leaving it on most of the time was the right call. So this feature in general seems to work as advertised, slightly improving the sound based on the environment. The physical design as previously mentioned is a cuboid of 14” tall and 7.5” length and width. This adds up to less than a cubic ft of space, but packs in a lot of tech. The double tall design makes this an easy device to tuck away, or slip into a vehicle. The outer structure is a covered in a fabric backed by a plastic honeycomb structure. Underneath that drivers are mounted on a rigid composite surface about a half in from the outer layer. On the top of the device are 8 buttons, one of which is an oversized power button. Flanking that button on the other side of the device is a 5 button circle that selects the active source via the outer buttons. The inner button is a ‘magic’ button that plays, pauses, and selects the next track. It can also be used to start playlists and has other capabilities depending on how long you hold it down. In UA form, the volume up and down buttons are extremely oversized, and are represented as + and - on the top of the speaker. These are both hard to miss and iconic for UA. The back of the device has a white plastic appendage where the rubber carry strap is located. Below that is the rubber covering for the inputs/charging area. Here are a service port, usb charging port, optical audio in port, and a 3.5mm auxiliary input. The optical input surprises me, as I don’t know how many people will be hooking up their digital audio out to this thing, but it's a nice option. I suppose you could make an excuse to hook an Xbox or Playstation up to an outdoor projector and then use this as audio. Obviously there is no need to support multi-channel decoding, so my assumption is that it only accepts 2 channel PCM. On the bottom, there are rubber feet that keep vibrations during playback to a minimum to both reduce unwanted noise and avoid the speaker vibrating its way into a pool or off a table. Battery life seems excellent. After several hours with my kids, listening at near 75% + volume, I was surprised to see 80% left on the battery. There is no listed size of battery, but I would have to guess it's quite big. Chances are this speaker will power through any sane party, and probably some insane ones. The included power adapter is rated at 90w, and charge time is 2.4 hours. I’d estimate given those figures somewhere around 10000mah in size, but I could be way off. Either way, I wouldn’t be too afraid to keep your phone topped off on the 1amp USB port. Now, of course the real question is, does it deliver in the sound department? The marketing material suggests extreme bass, which I can attest that it punches above its size in that department. The key to any speaker is moving air. The larger a speaker is, the more air it can displace, and thus the louder it can sound. The bigger wavelengths - in other words, the deeper tones - require larger speaker elements. Try as smaller bluetooth speakers might, it all breaks down to the fact there is no replacement for displacement. And the Hyperboom lives up to displacing air. The 4.5” dual woofer drivers might not be large on their own, but they make maximum effectiveness through the pairing of dual 3.5”x7.5” passive radiators - the effective surface area for bass to over 180 sq in. That’s a lot of surface area for vibrating, and is about equivalent to an 8” single woofer. This means the speaker can produce some tight deep bass without distortion. This makes for one of the loudest portable speakers I’ve heard. The equalizer allows you to dial in audio quality, but throw on the predefined bass boost, and enjoy some party music. If you aren’t a bass head, you’ll still find the speaker capable of producing a powerful presence, and mid-range without sacrificing clarity in the highs. I listened to a bunch of music, both my picks, and my kids favorite songs, and I was never disappointed in the quality. In fact, you may find that you turn it up louder than you think, as the sound fills the room, but lacks distortion, or clipping found in other speakers. Overall I found the sound quality excellent. The biggest pause a device like this brings is price. And of course the Hyperboom has a hyper price to go along with it. Stomaching a $400 MSRP for any speaker that doesn’t have a certain pedigree associated with it is a hard choice. But of course, this isn’t a normal speaker, but one with a slick set of technologies, well executed, and delivered in a subtle package. This speaker is for the party goer, the apartment dweller, or anyone who wants bigger sound in a portable package. I highly recommend this to those looking for something compact, but loud.

The speaker sounds great, BUT (and it’s a HUGE freakin’ BUT) the user experience is the MOST INFURIATING I’ve ever had with a product. Sounding great is fantastic, IF you can turn your speaker on, or IF you can pair it with a device, or IF you could put it in stereo when you own two, which I do—but that’s a LAUGHABLE idea! I’d happily pay more for a sub-par system and actually listen to it. You’ve been warned, DO NOT BUY this unless you want to invest in endless frustration!!!!

Love it to play on the basketball court while playing. The one thing that inbound change is the Bluetooth connection that sometimes takes a bit to connect if you have multiple devices around that have been connected before.
