HDHomeRun Connect is the Best OTA Tuner

Best Buy had this on sale for $79.99, so I finally decided to purchase it after much research. As a cordcutter, I'm always looking for a better way to view TV and save money. This device is worth the price and is very easy to install and setup. I was able to scan 39 crystal clear channels using only a flat digital antenna in a window. I suppose if I had a good roof mounted antenna, I would likely get more channels. This is so much simpler than using a TV tuner. You just open the app on your streaming device and scroll through the channel guide for programs to watch. My family likes this very much which makes my life good. The only thing I do not like is the HDHomeRun app, which has a very poor channel guide. I used the following workaround for my specific streaming devices: 1. For my 4K TV, I installed the Live Channels app for Android TV on my Nvidia Shield. This app is nice because it also picks up streaming channels from several other installed apps, so I'm getting about 170 channels. The channel guide in this app is also very good. 2. For my HDTV, I purchased the Channels app from iTunes and installed it on my Apple TV 4. This app is also very nice with an excellent channel guide. I haven't setup the DVR functionality yet on either device, but I don't expect any problems. I will connect a 1TB HD to my Nvidia Shield and I will probably use my iCloud drive for the Apple TV 4. So far I am very satisfied with my purchase.

The setup is not overly difficult but the overall usability is frustrating. Also, there is not good technical support. You can only leave a voice mail or send an email for them to return. It took nearly 24 hours for them to return my questions.

Sorry that we did not meet your expectations in support. We normally beat the industry standard of 48 - 72 hours in returning ticket requests. It also depends on the day of the week as around weekends there can be heavy volumes of questions. I hope all is working well now and we welcome you to the family

My antenna worked better without it. When I attached it, some channels were blocked because of some legal stuff that I couldn't understand.

The HDHomeRun does not block any over the air channels for any reason, legal or otherwise. There are rare situations where a TV can get slightly different channels than an HDHomeRun device, but that's almost entirely due to how far away the transmitting tower is. If you are experiencing some channels being dropped, please contact [email protected], so we can help figure out what's happening.

This didn't work as I expected. It needs to be hard wired to your router which doesn't suit my use case. Also, when it was wired to my router I couldn't cast to my TV

We're sorry to hear the device didn't work as you'd hoped. It definitely requires an ethernet connection to your router, because we want to avoid as many wifi complications as possible. And the HDHomeRun app does not support casting, because the Chromecast does not support MPEG2 video. It is still possible to use an app like Plex or Emby to convert the stream and send it to the Chromecast that way, if that is your preference!

We decided to become cord cutters and purchased the connect duo to go with the antenna to be able to pick up on the local channels in the area but unfortunately, it did not work for us in the least bit. We didn't even get any channels. So needless to say, we ended up returning it. If you live in the Palmdale area, we do not recommend this product.

Just to be clear, this device also requires an antenna to use. If you don't plug an antenna into it, it will not be able to gather in channels to send throughout your connected home.

One of the great things about any HDHomeRun device is that you have a great deal of choice in how you use it. While the official HDHomeRun app does not provide access outside the home, and does cost a small yearly fee to pay for accessing guide data, users are always welcome to use other software that can partly get around these issues, if they like. For example, Plex or Emby or Channels all provide access outside the home. And you are always welcome to use TVHeadEnd or MythTV if you want a totally free service. These 3rd party services may be a bit more work to set up, but the choice is always yours.

Simple to Hookup and work for Shield, Mac/PC, iPad

    Posted .

This is an easy to use device. Simply hook up an OTA antenna, ethernet to router, power cable and download the software to the pc/mac to scan/save the OTA channels. I use it mainly to view live HD OTA channels on the Nvidia Shield, Mac/PC, and/or iPad. To view on the iPad there is the free VLC app that does work but some shows give an error and won't display- likely due to DRM protection. Overall, it's a solid device and works beautifully with Nvidia shield and PC/Mac. It can also be used as Plex DVR but requires the plex pass that cost extra.

Hi Cozie, we're sorry to hear you have had issues getting channels. The number and quality of channels you get is very much dependent on the type and reception of antenna you are using. Before laying down any money, it's always a great idea to check local reception and signal strength using a group like AntennaWeb. https://antennaweb.org/Address

"Additional" channels? We stream "available" channels in your area based on what is available in your specific area - and how / where you have your antenna set up. We always suggest that users go to www.tvfool.com to check specifically at your own home address to see what channels you may receive and it helps you properly set your antenna in your own configuration.
