Customers regard the R7 Radar Detector highly for its impressive range and accurate radar detection capabilities, praising its ease of use and the helpful directional arrows. However, some users experienced a high number of false alerts and found the device to be bulky and expensive. The K band detection, while effective for some, also proved problematic for others due to false positives.

With the latest update it matches up to the hype. Easy compete to the Valentine and Escort. Updating firmware was a bit more involved but nothing 15min didn’t fix. Great value, great looking and pair it up with a BlendMount and it is the Perfect detector.

I will give this product three stars for now. I got this radar detector yesterday. And since then I have driven about 200 miles. I have not picked up a single cop, however, I have not seen any cops stationary looking for people speeding. The detector has only picked up car sensors, especially my girlfriends lol. it goes insane when her car is near. So I cannot say yet whether this detector is effective in detecting cops. I have seen 2 cops driving near me, but it didn’t pick them up due to driving and probably didn’t have their radar on. I’ll write a review when it actually does or doesn’t work

First things, first…
Know your local laws regarding radar detectors! If you get caught with one of these and you are in a place where it is illegal, they will confiscate it and ticket you. In short, VA and DC are the only states where radar detectors are completely illegal. If you are a commercial vehicle, it is always illegal. Know your laws as I would hate to have someone lose such a great device to a police officer. This doesn't tell you where police are… it tells you where police who are running radar are so you can be aware. This does not give you a license to drive like an idiot either. Combine this with Waze and you will be the ultimate road warrior.
I own the Uniden R3 and many other radars out there in this same price range over the years, but we are here to talk about the R7. The legendary "R3 with arrows". I loved a LOT of things about the R3 and adding arrows to it is all I ever wanted. A larger screen with dual antennas and a future with auto GPS lockouts make this worth the upgrade FOR ME. Since Uniden is great with firmware updates and database refreshes, I expect this detector to only get better with time!
My favorite improvements:
-Arrows
-Screen
-BSM Filtering
-Ambient Light Sensor
-Future Auto GPS Lockout Update
-Power Cord Relocated to Right Side and Micro USB
-Suction Cup Mount
This detector is built on the Uniden R3 platform, which is already a top performer in the space. Uniden was listening to us when we asked for upgrades under the hood and we got faster signal processing, better visuals, and dual antennas. I find BSM is better than the R3 and it runs quieter to me running them both side by side. I find the R7 to be a bit more rangy and first to alert vs the R3 in my testing. The redesign and relocation of the physical buttons will take me some getting used to but nothing I can't adjust to.
Build quality is good but isn't that great. If you drop this thing you are probably screwed. It creaks and squeaks when you press on joints and the body itself is super susceptible to scratching and scuffing. This maybe why they included a neoprene sleeve along with the hard case. The front faceplate seems unfinished as it moves too easily when pressure is applied. Size is definitely on the larger side and more comparable to the V1. If you are looking for a discrete detector, this one isn't for you. The power cord has been moved to the right side now so you don't have to worry about it when mounted near a visor. The speaker seems lower than the R3 but it does sound better.
The mount has been improved significantly. No more wobbling and bouncing while driving and the angles have been increased. Feels really solid and more secure. There is only play when you try to wiggle left and right which isn't a real problem. I am reaching here for something to nit-pick on the mount. It is almost too good to be true for something so big.
Arrows are helpful but not necessary for most. The R3 is more than adequate for most. There are two camps… "if it beeps just slow down" and the "where is it coming from" teams. If you are looking at this… this was something you have always been waiting for… an R3 with arrows. It is a nice to have so you can be more aware of the road and surroundings.
The screen isn't better than the R3 to me (brightness-wise). It can be difficult to see for some people and the colors are not accurate, just like the R3. I do love the size of the display which makes it easier to gather intel. R1 and R3 power cords are interchangeable and compatible with the R7. All function is there to mute/mark. BSM filtering seems to be slightly improved on Hondas/Acuras. 24.199 and 24.200 can be blocked in the options. Auto GPS lockouts will be added upon patent expiration via a software update. This will make the detector smarter around town and quiet known false alerts using GPS automatically. Basically teaching your radar to ignore things just by driving around town.
My recommendations:
-Create an app
-Add Bluetooth to update wirelessly
-Add Remote Screen for this price point
.: The Verdict :.
Why would I buy? A larger screen with dual antennas and a future with auto GPS lockouts make this worth the upgrade FOR ME. Since Uniden is great with firmware updates and database refreshes so I expect this detector to only get better with time! This isn't for everyone at this price point. This is for someone who wants the best!

Huge leap in radar detector performance

My family has used many radar detector models since the 80's, from the original boxy Escorts and Passports to the more recent 8500-9500 models, Redlines and Valentine V-1. The Redline had incredible range and the V-1 was very scienced out and intuitive. The quantum leap in performance and customization with this R-7 is real and can't be understated! This truly lives up to the hype and is one purchase I am 100% glad I made. One drive with this and my son and I were on the way back to Best Buy and he purchased one for himself....it is truly that good! Get off the fence because this is as close to a sure thing that you can get.

No BS Radar Detector

If you want a no BS radar detector, then this is the unit to purchase. I was looking for a detector that had 360 degree protection, it's own internal GPS and blind spot filtering. I did not want a detector that I had to pair with my phone. I put 40,000 miles on my vehicle a year with my commute to work. The R7 keeps me situationally aware at all times. False alerts are minimal. I have detected bogey's over 2 miles away. I had to contact Uniden Customer Support when I downloaded the latest firmware and I actually got a real human on the phone. I was a huge fan of the detector that marketed itself as "the last detector you will ever have to buy". I owned a couple of them and I was excited when the new model was announced. I was disappointed when it came out with no internal GPS, no "quiet ride" unless you pair it with your phone. The R7 is what that detector should have been all along. The only thing about this detector that I wish was different, is the all plastic housing. I would love it if it was reinforced with a metal housing. Other than that, its the perfect radar detector for me. Do your research, there are a lot of models out there. If you purchase this unit, you will be pleased.

After owning the original uniden R1 and R3 (both impressive radar detectors) the arrows are amazing. It’s so helpful knowing a direction that the threat is coming from to assist in planning accordingly. However, this very useful feature appears to come at a price. After running the previously mentioned R1 and R3, the range of the R7 seems to have been compromised in comparison. Im not basing this off of any actual scientific data or anything but in real world experience it doesn’t seem to have the absure amount of detection range of its cheaper sibilings. It does still provide ample warning of radar in the area and I suppose it still surpasses the ability of many cheaper detectors but not the unbelievable range ive come to expect from a detector. Its also massive compared to the R1 and R3. The size difference is not as noticeable from the driver seat but i have to believe its more noticeable to anyone else on the road. All in all, the R7 is a good detector. Arrows are awesome (obviously the only reason to spend the extra money for this detector) and they are generally accurate from my experiences so far. The range is “good enough” and plenty sufficient for driving onthe freeway but not the miles of warning I sometimes got from other uniden detectors. The window mounts are great and stay in place VERY well. The power cord is the standard uniden cord with a usb port built in and the mute button on the plug. And the case it comes with is very well constructed and nice but it should almost have a shoulder strap if they think people are going to carry that thing around anyway. Maybe a woman could fit it in a large purse or something but it’s definitely substantial in size. It also comes with a much more convenient and less protective pouch to put it in. Its a nice option to have as ore the multiple windshield mount options. If I could do it over again, i think I would have spent the little extra money to get the R8 with the hopes of the range inproving a little. Good detector though and id recommend it to anyone.

Still a good long range detector. My first time using it and it alerted to an officer using constant on ka band from the oncoming lane from at least half a mile away )probably further). One of the best plug in and go detectors on the market, gps lockouts, arrows, and full color display. And you can update this unit at home with your computer instead of having to mail it back for updates like other brands.

It is the best radar detector on the market, but it's a bit pricey.
I was surprised how far and accurate it was in picking up Ka band. Using this detector and Waze make a good combination.
You will need to tweak the settings a little to get it to behave the way you want and prevent K band false alarms. There are plenty of resources on the forums to help you.
I never travel on the highway without this now.

Been out of the radar detector game for awhile and thought I would try another one. First I bought an Escort Max3, like it's performance but wanted something with a little more range and front and rear coverage. Traded it in for the R7 and very happy so far. The R7 is a very sensitive detector, biggest drawback is the false alarms from blind spot monitors on today's new vehicles. I have a 2019 Jeep Cherokee and they are among the worst for emitting falses from the blind spot monitors. I had to switch to advanced mode and set my K band to 40% and the rear sensitivity to 60% to silence all the false alarms from my Jeep. Even at these reduced settings the R7 still has more sensitivity than most detectors on the market. Very nice and east to read screen, like the fact it is angled towards you while driving. I bought a blendmount which attaches to your mirror stem which makes a nice clean install. The case seems kind of cheap feeling but it is light weight and seems to be holding up well. Another nice feature is they include a nice hard case and a soft fitted case if you want to carry the detector with you. This has a ton of settings to choose from, you can dial it in to your personal preference. If you're on the fence, don't be afraid to give this a try, you will be very pleased with it's performance and features.

I had high hopes for the Uniden R7, especially after reading all the glowing reviews about its range and detection accuracy. For the first week, it lived up to the hype. It was super sensitive, gave plenty of warning on Ka-band signals, and the customizable alerts and arrows were actually really useful. I thought I had finally found the radar detector that justified the premium price.
But then the problems started. Out of nowhere, the unit began randomly shutting off and turning back on while I was driving. At first I thought maybe it was the power cord or the cigarette lighter socket, but after testing it in multiple vehicles with different power sources, the same issue kept happening. Sometimes it would power down and restart three or four times in the span of a short drive. Other times, it would just cut out completely until I unplugged and re-plugged it.
This isn’t just a minor inconvenience but it defeats the whole purpose of having a radar detector. If I can’t rely on it to stay powered on, then it’s useless when I actually need it. On top of that, the constant on/off cycle is distracting and makes you lose confidence in the device.

I've been following vortex radar on YouTube for a few years now and have been on and off about buying a radar detector. I decided on either the r7 or v1 gen 2 and don't regret it. I came to the conclusion that the r7 is more user friendly and you don't need any 3rd party apps to run it. The r7 also has slightly further range detection in tests and scenarios.
I mainly got the r7 for long trips and highway use, given that i don't speed that much, but still wanted it for city use and my normal commute. It's impressive just how sensitive it can be and how far out it picks up a cop down the road blasting radar. There are a lot of settings I haven't messed with yet and just run it on city mode out of the box, although i would suggest turning down k band some to reduce the false warnings. If you're in the market for a high end detector, then I'd suggest the r7.

Top Of The Line - Great Detection

The choice came down to the Uniden R7 or the Escort Max 360. I chose the Uniden for its superior range detection. Living in Nevada, with lots of lonely, long distance highways, I wanted a device with maximum detection and protection, and the Uniden provides that. I had originally planned to order from Amazon but stopped into Best Buy and was pleased to find the unit at a surprisingly good price. Would recommend and would purchase again. This is a sophisticated device that can be tweaked and fine tuned. I've chosen to leave the settings at factory defaults for simplicity, and I put up with the extra chatter and occasional false signals that the detector produces, particularly in populated areas. But a person who really wants to fine tune the performance of this detector has the settings capability to do so.

This is an upgrade from an escort passport. GPS is a great feature, range is mine blowing, and it stays fairly quiet (bsm filtering). It’s a tad bulky and the smaller suction cup isn’t sturdy, but it comes with two mounts, the other one is perfect.

Does everything I need for it to do and then some. I chose this over the similar products because of the range, price, and functions. The R7 is replacing my Escort 9500ix that I had for over 10 years and was beginning to show its age with many false alerts and no more support by the company.
The only gripe I have with the R7 is that I just wish the mute button were in the front. Other than that this thing is amazing and the arrows are very helpful where I don't have to be guessing where the alert is coming from.
One thing that I would recommend doing a Google search for advanced settings to get the most out of this unit.

Great long range detector, excellent display screen with informative arrows. Only issue, after upgrading from the R3, the K falses are way too much, especially in the city (even in city mode and all the filters on). I had to turn K rear mute on, quite ride volume to 0, and up the K quite ride speed to 55mph before it stopped being annoying noisy on city streets. Those settings ensure it doesn't beep for K band signals if you're going under 55mph (most city streets) which are 99.9% of the time traffic sensors, blind spot monitor sensors, door sensors from stores, etc... which are not a threat.

To keep it light the Uniden R7 did what it was born to do, I got my first KA alert immediately after pulling onto the HWY, the source was an unmarked car that had to be at least a mile away. The R7 also did great with BSM rejection and K-Falses. I maybe had one or two false alerts while driving through small towns.
I Was initially having a few more false alerts, these went away with the latest update and selecting the recovery box option. The detector itself doesn’t feel so premium, it’s a very toned down look and feel. I like the large screen and the way it’s offset to the drivers line of sight. I’m not crazy about the button placement but you get use to it. I wish they had an app similar to escorts for setting up but this definitely isn’t a deal breaker. All in all I say Uniden knocked it out of the park!
