This radar detector is absolutely worth every penny. It’s not about speeding, it’s about being aware of your surroundings and knowing what lays ahead or behind you. This has paid for itself time and time again. This detection has many options but can be customized to your specific area and driving style. Sure Waze is good, but it’s not going to tell you when there is active radar driving behind you at night on the highway far enough where you can’t see them. Or actively detect when radar is being driving towards you before you even see them. It alerts you to speed cameras and if you’re exceeding the speed camera limit, red light cameras, Gatso/RT4 and MRCD and more. It also alerts you to laser and the type of gun being used (though it’s not a laser hammer so if you get hit with laser it’s too late but you at least have the type of gun that was used to challenge its accuracy). It has a speed limit alert that you set that will remind you if you’re over your pre-set speed. It has memory functions and alerts and so much more. Yes it legal to own in all 50 states (laser jammers not so much). Highly recommend this device. I also recommend watching videos on YouTube to be able to learn all the different features this unit has to offer and how to program it. There’s a learning curve but much easier when you watch the videos. Check out vortexradar videos as he is a great resource.

Best radar detector I ever owned.

This radar detector is amazing. It replaced my old Uniden R3. It has lightning-fast response and incredible range. The display is easy to see day or night and has directional arrows that point towards the cop.
It does get a few false alerts but within acceptable limits. I could eliminate those very few false alerts by adjusting the settings in the menu, but I don't want to lower the detectors sensitivity or tighten the filters too much that it will lock out a legitimate alert. As said the few Falses I do get are not much.
With a radar detector this advanced, it gets easier with time to distinguish between false alerts and real ones. This detector displays the frequency and band of the alert and in time you can tell based on that information provided what is real and what isn't and much of the Falses will eventually be cleaned up with the auto lockouts.
The R8 also has such fast reaction time that it even can save you from instant on sometimes.
An example of that is there is a certain cop in my area who likes to sit at the bottom several hills in my area in the evening. When coming up the hill and approaching the cop who sits on the bottom of the hill on the opposite side from your approach, he can see your headlights coming before you come over the top of the hill and he flips on his instant on radar. He has targeted me several times and every time, my R8 detected him in time for me to react. He thinks he is sneaky, but my R8 got him every time.
The R8 also has great rear detection and with the arrows it is good to know if he is in back or if you are approaching an ambush ahead.
If there is one con to this detector it would be the build quality. It is not terrible, but I hope I never accidently drop the R8 as I am not sure it could take it. As a precaution, I took a small piece of string and made a safety line and suspended the string to my sun visor and the other end to the suction mount, so if the suction cup ever loses its grip, the whole detector won't come crashing to the dash or the floor of my car.
All in all, I have had many detectors but the R8 is the best one I ever had.

Longest range. Detects actual radar signals from new Gatso based traffic and speed cams. Trustworthy. I still have my previous generation R7 in my other car and original radar detector from Uniden that's 15 years old in another. Only dislike is the front is too big and boxy. Wish the boxiness was below the top of the detector not above like the R7 so it can be placed closer to rearview mirror.

I have owned the R7 and it was a good one. The R8 takes it to the next level with a caveat; it’s ugly. Frankly it looks like a detector from the 90s, or from a Mad Max movie. Having owned also the Escort Redline 360c, which is nice to look at, the R8 is the opposite. Yet look past the outdated design and what it does; wow. Today i got a Ka announcement and when I finally got to the police it was over 3 miles. That is better than the 360c Redline and R7. The display is easy to read, and the detector announced what type of radar or lasar it has encountered. Overall it isn’t beautiful, but it is a beast! You buy a detector to avoid tickets, and the R8 does it very well.

The arrows take this you didn't think you needed it until you needed it idea to the next level people on a budget just get the R7 for the arrows because they are that much of a game changer . Finally, I recommend the R4 because it has the exact same internals as the R8 a smaller footprint and costs less than half the price? It's even on sale right now. Finally there is the R3, which I would only recommend if you can find it refurbished for 150. The R8 is the king of kings when it comes to its competitors, but you're paying a hefty price tag with the R7 coming in at $500 you are probably better off if you happen to not live in an incredibly hilly area with difficult hills and other obstructions and with the sale going on for the R4 at 300. It's the best entry-level radar on the market and frankly just as good as the R8, but it's simply lacking that directional arrow feature the new unit in our a companion app is also very helpful and no matter your purchase. You will be happy without a doubt.

The Uniden R8 Radar Detector is perfect for staying ahead on the road. As someone who loves road trips, this radar has been a lifesaver. It picks up radar signals from crazy far away, so you know what’s coming before you even get close. It’s easy to use—just plug it in, and you’re good to go. It even learns where the false alerts are (like from store alarms), so you're not jumping at every beep. It’s like having a reliable lookout in the car with you, helping avoid surprises from the cops.

The R8 is the 1st radar detector I've bought in about 10 years.
The last being an Escort- that I believe was the first advertised undetectable radar detector. Driver STi, I think was the model name
It was a GREAT detector for it's time, but over the years it became nearly unusable with all the false alarms it gave.
Flash forward to this last week. It arrived on a Tuesday, it's Saturday morning now. 3 days of commuting to and from work in use.
At the end of day 2 it had the GPS lockouts set. Perfectly. It's a 20 mile drive each way. About 4 miles are street traffic driving, the rest is interstate.
Some YouTube reviews observed issues with the GPS lockouts feature. Maybe the firmware was updated for mine? IDK. But no issues with that whatsoever.
Until I got the R8, I was - and still am- using the WAZE GPS navigation app.. WAZE is a fantastic app to notify drivers of road hazards and police presence in moderate to heavily trafficked streets and highways. But it's not that great in more remote areas or the wee morning hours for police alerts- or what if YOU are the 1at person to come across a freshly set radar trap? It's virtually useless then. That's where the R8 is worth it's weight 8n gold. UBIDEN engineered the R8 to have future Bluetooth connectivity to work with 3rd party app developers AND they are also working on a laser jammer add on device for the R8 as well.. Laser jammers aren't legal in all states. Do your homework on your area before you let that feature become a purchasing factor.
In my area, X Band isn't used, so I turned that band off. I have it sweeping the entire K and Ka bands, including POP alerts. I keep it on the HIGHWAY mode. False alerts are very minimal and very shortlived. I suspect that the falses are coming from other cars using those bands for their own driver safety assistance features. There's filters for those band segments, but those alerts are weak and shortlived, I would rather have a hundred of those unobtrusive alerts than miss 1 real alert.
I highly recommend watching the YouTube set up videos on the R8 and check out the recommended settings links that explain all the different settings use caaes to optimize your R8 experience.
It really is a fantastic detector. I bought it through Amazon with the optional 3 year warranty. I don't expect problems with it, but you know the saying - Is rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Again, check out the YouTube reviews, they're spot on, but now with excellent GPS lockout performance, where that has apparently been an issue before.
If you can afford it, get it. It's really all you need. Plug and play with a few minor tweaks, set it up once or twice and forget it. The highway radar Android app works great with this unit when paired through Bluetooth.

Excellent Radar Detector- Outdated Look

Love, love, love this radar detector. Sure it’s a bit bulky and the styling is outdated. But it works great and if you set it up to be selective about the radar frequencies used in areas you travel within, there are minimal false alerts. (There will always be some false alerts) The feature that remembers and automatically eliminates false alerts detected repeatedly at the same GPS coordinates doesn’t work all that well. And I really wish it had an AP similar to Escort’s or Valentine’s. But if you are looking for a great radar detector that detects threats well before you see them, and isn’t quite as chatty as the Valentine, and doesn’t cost $800 like like the top of the line Escort, then this is it.

this is the best radar on the market. I've had many others such as the escort, the r3, the r4 and now this. I love having the app to use, the directional radars, and the overall modern look. I travel a lot for work, and love having fun on backroads on the weekends, and this has saved me numerous times and will continue doing so.

This has been a very good purchase. It was on the expensive side, but it has paid for itself several times. The long distance notifications has saved our butts a couple of times. The auto mute is cool once it gets a source in the same spot multiple times. It was a good buy, i would definitely recommend this product. No complaints yet.

I recently had the pleasure of testing out the Uniden R8 Radar Detector, and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. This radar detector is a game-changer when it comes to on-road safety and awareness. Its outstanding performance and remarkable range truly set it apart from the competition.
One of the standout features of the Uniden R8 is its incredible range. During my testing, I was consistently amazed at how far in advance it detected radar signals. Whether it was a speed trap or a traffic enforcement officer, the Uniden R8 provided ample warning time, allowing me to adjust my speed accordingly. This level of advanced detection is a significant advantage, especially on highways and open roads.
The accuracy of the Uniden R8's alerts is another commendable aspect. False alarms can be a nuisance with some radar detectors, but the Uniden R8's advanced filtering technology ensures that you're only alerted when it truly matters. This not only enhances the driving experience but also prevents unnecessary distractions.
The device's user interface is intuitive and easy to navigate. The clear and informative display provides essential information at a glance, such as signal strength and type of radar detected. Additionally, the voice alerts are clear and concise, ensuring that you stay informed without taking your eyes off the road.
Build quality is another area where the Uniden R8 shines. The device feels solid and well-built, giving you confidence in its durability and longevity. The compact design and easy installation process make it a seamless addition to any vehicle.

After using the Uniden R8 Radar Detector for several months I can say that it is a top-performing device with exceptional range and GPS features. It offers early warning for radar and laser threats and helps me stay aware of red light and speed cameras. I had an older radar detector that gave me false alerts due to anti-collision radars and other things like automatic door openers at various stores. This detector can be set up to recognize these falses and ignore them. Very accurate and easy to use. While a bit pricey, it is an excellent piece of equipment and much cheaper than a ticket in the long run.

Bought thjs r8 for my ither vehicle. I decided to start tinkering with the settings and realized i like this even more. If you ride with this thing and capture the obnoxious k bands that are generating you can virtually make them all disappear from false alerts. I used the vortex settings as a starting point and then after a couple lf drives that gave me a good variance of bands on the road. I was able to adjust the kband settings to about 95% block. One thing i do is filter to "mute" those bands so that they pop up but are full muted, this allows me to get some awareness just in case. If you want to fully block the pop up, set your setting to "max" and that will stop the visual notification regardless of level. Thats how you fully block all false alerts. The KA band is really accurate and i dont consider it false since its the top rated band in use by law enforcement. What i will add just for comparison is i have an R4 and rode them side by side, the r4 is about more sensitive and picked up notification about 20yards before the r8 did when driving. But to me the difference is the r4 doesnt know where the radar is so youd spend 20yards looking for the source anyway. The range on the r4 feels like its 2.1miles for sure and id say the r8 is maybe 1.8mi but its still great. The customization and the Rtach app works good for me. It could use some refinement but im not using my cell phone for much other than getting to the settings in real time. I would say thjs radar is not "novice" friendly, youll have to be willing to make adjustments to it for best use, not just plug it in and go.

I have used this radar detector daily for the last 6 months and am very happy with this product.
I was skeptical whether this radar detector would be worth the money, as it was twice as expensive as the three previous detectors I had owned over the last 15 years. I was also concerned that it would be too bulky since I drive a smaller sedan where windshield space is at a premium.
The increased size of this detector turned out to be no big deal and the increased features are worth the additional bulk and price.
The most important features are: 1) directional arrows; 2) automated GPS-linked mute memory.
1) Directional Arrows:
The directional arrows are a game changer. With a quick glance, you know where the signal is coming from (the arrow is large and visible).
There is peace of mind knowing that you have driven past the source, particularly when driving on major interstates where there is a lot of traffic.
2) Automated GPS-linked Mute Memory:
There are plenty of stationary radar sources that I pass every day that do not come from police radar. The automated GPS-linked mute memory feature acknowledges the incoming radar signals from airport radar or gas stations but will begin to automatically mute the audible alarm if this is a stationary radar signal frequency that you pass every day on that route.
This eliminates the false alarms I used to get all the time with my previous radar detectors. Now, the only audible alarms that I receive are from legitimate radar sources (i.e., police radar signal from a temporary speed trap).
I hope this review helps people who may be on the fence about this product. I normally do not take the time to write reviews, but I think this product is worth the price.

Exactly what I wanted

This ended up being exactly what I wanted and has worked flawlessly for me. I actually try not to speed that much and mostly wanted it for highway/interstate since I take a lot of backroads to help remind me to slow down before I get a ticket (I take a lot of back roads with frequent turns and speed changes). Every speeding ticket I've gotten is in a transition zone I didn't notice and this has already helped me avoid at least 1 or 2 tickets in the month I've owned it! I've also noticed that on the highway it seems like it picks up radars from a mile or two away. The auto mute function is very handy in the city too. Overall I would highly recommend it to anyone if you don't mind the cost!
