    Tom Hardy Steals The Show

enom is the latest comic book character to grace in the big screen, in Columbia Pictures’ Venom directed by Ruben Fleischer. The film opens up introducing us to investigative reporter and golden boy Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy). Blessed with an alluring fiancée Anne (Michelle Williams), his own TV show and a spacious apartment, Eddie appears to have it all. Eddie’s inquisitive natures allows him to get on the bad side of Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), Eddie loses everything. Months later, Eddie gets an offer he cannot refuse by one of Drake’s scientists who has grown weary of Drake’s motives. Through a series of circumstances, Eddie becomes the host of an alien symbiote that gives him a violent super alter ego: Venom. Soon, he must rely on his newfound powers to protect the world from a shadowy organization looking for a symbiote of their own evil deeds. Since making his first appearance in a 1986 issue of the “Web of Spider-Man” series Venom has remained a fan favorite. The character made an ill-received appearance in 2007’s Spider Man 3, so a reboot was in order. The screenwriters make the wise choice to adopt “Lethal Protector” (Venom becomes a vigilante guardian hero for San Francisco) and “Planet of the Symbiotes” (Earth is invaded by an army of symbiotes) for the film’s central plot. In the lead role, Tom Hardy does his usual solid work by fully committing to the role. To portray the role properly, Hardy made the wise to provide the voice and physical stand-in for several scenes of Venom. While the CGI may be a distraction for some, I was quite impressed with the CGI. The rest of the cast also does their fair share in their roles; however, Venom truly is the Tom Hardy show. Director Ruben Fleischer makes a welcome return to features after spending the last five years, directing shows for various comedic television series. Fleisher still has a natural eye for impressive action sequences. One of the sequences involving a chase through the streets of San Francisco is worth the price of admission alone. Despite solid direction though, Venom does have its share of problems. One of the main issues with Venom is the film’s tone. Rumors initially swirled of star Tom Hardy and director Ruben Fleischer clashing on set and it is apparent through the film. Watching the film, it comes off that Ruben Fleischer wanted to have a darker mainstream approach, while Tom Hardy wanted to stay true to the character and his comic book origins while adding his own twist. Another problem I had with Venom concerns the final fight between Venom and the big bad, as it is too brief and confusing due to the heavy CGI usage. Despite these two issues, I can still recommend Venom solely on the risks it takes. Instead of being a straightforward superhero origin story, at its core Venom is a good old-fashioned buddy comedy. While this approach will not work for everyone’s tastes, I genuinely enjoyed Venom and walked out with a smile on my face. Superhero origin films are not usually the sign of what is to come in a potential franchise. Based on the post-credit scenes I have a feeling Venom will truly find its footing in the sequel. While Venom is nowhere near as good as the other superhero films released this year Venom is a fine start to a franchise.

I had hesitancy buying this film blind, as I hadn't had a chance to catch it during its theatrical run. It looked kind of bland in the previews, and that transformation scene in the trailers that quickly became a meme giving Venom giant googly-eyes was something that just looked "off". Still, my 5 year old really wanted to see this, and yes, I could have rented it, but it's a superhero film, I'm a sucker for exclusive steelbook art, AND it included early access to watch it via Vudu with the preorder, so, armed with a friend's recommendation, I took the plunge. Happily, this removed my worries. It's probably more of a 4 1/2star film for me, but the enjoyment my son has gotten from it is worth rounding up. (As well as the hours of laughs afterwards as my son would imitate Venom's deep-voiced growl of "HUNGRY!" whenever he was... well, hungry). Venom is a Sony film, and without the Marvel cooperation found in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it does suffer *slightly* in just missing the mark of the "loftier" MCU standards in their films. Yes, it still has plenty of action, humor, and a top-tier actor in the lead (as well as an excellent performance by the "big bad" whose name/ actor escapes me at the moment,) but there's a certain "aura" missing here that I can't quite place: maybe it has something to do with Venom's scenes largely, if not exclusively, playing out at night, which IS a bit against the film's favor. Still, whatever downgrade there is between the more "mainstream" Marvel movies and Venom may go completely unnoticed by you. It's still a heck of a lot of fun, with some of the best laugh out loud moments, (not just in quality, but quantity, as well,) with plenty of action and wonderful setpieces that holds up with ANY recent superhero films. The FX are mostly excellent, but there's a few that don't always look as great as others, as well as the aforementioned love of making much of the film take place at night, which does take away from some impressive effects. Venom fighting the Big Bad, when both suits are being pulled away from their hosts, filling the screen with alien liquid and the respective actors, could have been even more impressive had there been better definition between the night sky and two dark/ black aliens. Even in 4K HDR, this scene could have "popped" even further had it not been (yet ANOTHER) nighttime action scene. I will add that Venom also avoids the oft-boring "origins" first film story. Its pacing for a superhero first film seems tighter, with as much, if not more, action taking place. Venom has some minor issues, but as a whole, it's an enjoyable romp that bodes well for the future of the franchise!

I was going to give this film 3 stars, but as I am reviewing the blue ray disc specifically I had to bump it to 4. Lots of really cool special features included. First off the good, well the great. Tom Hardy is fantastic in this flick. I mean its Tom hardy, so that's not a surprise, but I think he even exceeded my expectations. Some of the scenes where he is first dealing with having an alien symbiote living within him are about as good as comic book adaptations get IMO. Overall the script feels a bit unpolished. I think this film could of been great if it were given more time in development. The supporting cast is solid. I particularly liked the performance of Michelle Williams as Eddies ex and Reid Scott as her bf. Maybe Im just a sucker for when a failed romantic relationship can be shown as people still caring for each other as friends. Now for the bad. The CGI. When Venom isn't doing anything major he looks pretty great. When he's fighting it's ok. When it's a symbiote without a host or the big final battle the CGI is just horrible by the current standard of modern big budget movies. The symbiotes especially just take me out of the movie when they are creeping around. I swear I have seen videos games look better. If you are going to be as ambitious as this movie is when trying to show CGI alien creatures you have to commit to that and get it right and this movie does not. All in all though its still an enjoyable movie with some really fun and funny scenes. Tom Hardy is spectacular and I am so happy to have him portraying on of my favorite comic book characters. I look forward to seeing where they go with this series in the sequel (Carnage and Tom Hollands Spider Man perhaps?!) as I love how they have imagined the character so far. If they can just clean up the future scripts and CGI, this series could become something special.

First off, I find the steelbook edition to be an upgrade to the standard covers that come with new a new release. Looks great for the better part of ones video disc collection. Now the movie itself. 4k ultra HD blueray is, in itself, a vastly better experience than lower quality formats providing you have the right type flat screen. What I love about this movie is the interaction between Venom and his main host. This is not the typical Marvel flick. Taking one of Marvels seldom used cast of demi-heroes and developing his chatacter as done in this installment brings a refreshing interaction to the viewer. Don't believe the so called "professional" critics. Audience ratings are far better indicators of ratings. The computer generated graphics make Venoms reality believable. Especially in this format. This is one of those movies you want in your video collection.

We are big superhero fans in my family. My son has been raised on the MCU so we will pretty much watch anything that comes out. That said I wasn't too excited for this movie but purchased it anyway as a report card reward. I thought is started out a little rough and there were parts that I questioned the actions of a character but overall I was pleasantly surprised. The banter between Venom and his host was amusing - Venom is snarky from the start and that took me a little by surprise but it works. The effects were great especially the visuals of the parasites and the hosts in the battle scenes. The plot was weak. The villain was not likeable and clearly bad but I'm not sure if he was evil or crazy or misguided. I also found Venom's motivation as the movie progressed poorly explained and not believable. Enjoyable and I'm sure we will watch it again. The parasite/host relationship at the end makes me want to see more of them and their interaction so I hope the character continues on.

I really liked this movie. It was a lot different than the trailers led me to believe, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. The movie started slower than I thought it would, and I expected a lot more action scenes than it had. But that was my own expectations based solely on the trailers I had seen, not a mark against the movie. I had never seen Venom in the comic books before, so I have nothing to base what I thought it would/should be. The actions scenes are really good, the storyline good, and I really like Venom. As a Marvel fan, especially with the Avengers, I am not disappointed in this movie at all. I really liked the comedic parts in the movie, and the fight scenes were awesome! If you like the more unpolished anti-heroes, then Venom is sure to please.

    A Good Release If You’re a Fan

I have to say: this film was fairly disappointing for me. I feel like it was an extremely rushed and cliched story with clunky dialogue, but does have some entertaining bits and pieces. As a blu ray release, it’s pretty good. This is not a true 4K release but is actually an upscale. I would say if you’re looking to save a couple bucks, you could pick up the regular blu ray and get the same experience. The special features are decent and provide some insight into the production. I think if you’re a big fan of the character and the movie, you’ll find a lot of cool factoids you’ll be happy to see. I would say that if you’re a big fan of superhero movies and like having them all in your collection, this would be a good one to add to your collection. But if you’re just a casual fan, I would say you’d be better off to rent it first and then decide if you want to add it to your collection.

Been a huge fan of Venom since the 90s and been waiting for a good live action adaptation of him ever since and it's about time! This film doesn't hold back, it hits fast and hard with top notch action and effects, capturing all the visceral and chaotic energy of the comic book character. Venom is a standout among antiheroes, part lovecraftian nightmare abomination and part twisted mad genius of Todd McFarlane and all awesome! Don't let the critics fool you. They don't like comic characters to start with and their minds are blown and burnt on the runaway success of MCU. This is some of Marvel's best material free of social commentary reveling in it's own excellence!

I have already watched this 3 times, the sound is Atmos works great, sounds are amazing and rich, bass is deep shakes my house. Comedy gold in this flick, action, suspense, bad guys are fun, it has it all. Quality for the 4k experience is top notch too. Some are too dark or too bright, but this one was just right. If you don't have it, another go to movie for when you have friends over to show off your crown jewel SS system. Fantastic! The movie has a feel fun and feel good plot, you really root for the guys on the good side, unless you're a bad guy, you can root for who you want to, that's America the free ViVa la Constitution! Get this movie if you like quality to be on the up and up!
