Even large chunks of fruit get ripped apart in no time. I think the extra settings are nice, but not at all necessary to make anything you want. had other lower cost units and just not worth it for us. We use it everyday! We have one in our house overseas and now one here.

That's what I like about Vitamix products - a 10-year warranty.
