The WD_BLACKTM 3.5-inch internal desktop drive is a very reliable and high performance (7200rpm) Gaming and Video editing hard drive that runs unobtrusively in my i9 64gb ram system.
Tip – make sure you have a 3.5inch compatible drive bay or other mounting system available along with a SATA III cable and power supply connector.
The WD_BLACK™ provides a lot of performance, storage and speed for ultra-heavy computing tasks such as gaming or video editing – I use it for both. The 256 MB of DRAM cache on the 10TB drive is optimized for drive performance giving perceived load times similar to those of an SSD. Combine the drive with an SSD for a dual drive configuration, allowing you to benefit from the additional caching of your operating system onto the SSD or use several WD_BLACKTM drives in a RAID configuration for increased performance.
It comes with an exceptional 5-year limited warranty (I have not had to use the service on a WD_BLACK drive) but it is nice to know it is there.

I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
WD’s Black series (FZBX) 10TB hard drive is a beast of a storage drive for not just gaming PCs, but PCs capable of using it in general. Reads and writes are relatively fast for spinning rust. Just keep in mind that if your computer doesn’t support UEFI, you’ll only be able to access the first 2.25 TB of this drive.
Setup is simple - pop the drive in like any other 3.5 inch hard drive, boot your computer, and partition and format it using the disk management tools built into your Operating System. Then use it like any other drive.
Large file reads and writes are incredibly fast for a hard drive. Every system I tested with showed reads of over 270 megabytes per second with 1 megabyte files. Even small 4 kilobyte reads and writes were decent for a hard drive, though nowhere near as fast as even a SATA SSD. This is a drive that can handle some video editing tasks in 4k on its own. (Just for comparison, the 2006 Mac Pro would read and write at 285 MBps to its SSD while the other systems average between 490 and 535 to SATA SSDs.)
It’s also a good place to keep apps and games you don’t use on a regular basis so you’re not eating up all your SSD storage space.
Where it shines, however, is online backups and storage. Since it’s able to read and write quickly, it’s a good place to keep a large media collection or files you don’t want tying up your SSD but may need to quickly access. It also runs cool, so I’m not concerned about it running for extended periods like I would be for an external drive.
The only drawback is for those of us with older PC systems dating back to about a decade ago. Until Intel’s 3rd generation Core processors came out, properly implemented UEFI wasn’t common. Many systems from that time may be configured to not use UEFI booting, however, so Windows may need reinstallation. Computers without UEFI won’t properly recognize this drive at all.
All in all, the WD Black 10TB hard drive (FZBX) is a solid choice for augmenting the storage of your SSD.
Notes on my testing:
I tested with a 2006 Apple Mac Pro (flashed with 2007 Mac Pro firmware) running OS X 10.7 Lion, a 2009 Mac Pro (flashed with 2012 firmware) running macOS 11 Big Sur, a Dell Optiplex 780 running Windows 10, a HP EliteDesk 800 G1 running Windows 10, a system I put together with an Asus H81i-Plus motherboard running Windows 10, and a system I put together with an Aorus B550 Pro AX motherboard running Windows 11 Preview. The Macs, the HP, and the self-built systems recognized the drive as 10TB while the Dell recognized the hard drive as 2.25 TB in its BIOS setup.
Not wanting to risk damage to this drive, I stopped testing with the Dell at that point. Just know that if you connect this drive to a non-UEFI compliant PC (or one not in UEFI boot mode) or a PPC Mac, you risk damaging this drive.
The Macs reported the drives at 9.97TB formatted and available for use while the Windows machines mentioned here reported 9.09 TB available; this is due to how the different operating systems report hard drive space (Apple used base-10 while Windows uses a base-2 system). I did confirm that both OSes reported identical byte counts, however. (10,000,308,438,400 bytes exactly).

With 10TB of space, this SATA III 3.5” drive has more than enough space to fit quite an array of regular games. I was able to load all of my main games onto the drive with no issues, and still have plenty of space leftover for the back catalog. Not only that, but as someone who also uses their PC as a media player, it is nice to be able to load some movies onto the drive as well, and in this case I also had no playback issues whatsoever. In terms of set-up, really you just need the machine screws to put this in your respective desktop, the SATA and power cables, and then you are good to go. The drive itself is fairly quite for being an HDD, and unless you have a near silent PC, you likely are not to notice the drive spinning, particularly while gaming.
At 7200 rpm and with a quoted data transfer speed of up to 6 Gbps, you will have minimal waiting to get your catalogue loaded up on the drive. I didn’t do a formal benchmark, but I was able to move about 20 games of varying size to the drive in just a few hours, will no real transfer rate bottlenecks to speak of.
One of the things I worry about with HDD drives are mechanical failures, but this drive comes with a 5-year warranty which helps put my mind at ease for future use. Likewise, the drive itself is clearly well constructed, which again gives me confidence to the durability of the drive in the case.
All-in-all, if you are looking for large “slower” storage for gaming, I really recommend this drive. Yes, it won’t near a top of the line SSD in terms of transfer rates or in-game load times, but for 90% of the games I play, I don’t feel bottlenecked at all. Likewise, with the higher transfer speeds, I can easily offload my primary games to my SSD for that extra speed, and then easily push them back to my main storage solution with little effort. Honestly, it has been a great product for me!

Fast, quiet platter drive with tons of space
THE GOOD
~ Quiet
~ Fast for platter drive
~ Easy install--but required a slight change
~ Tons of space
~ Heavy enough to be used as a weapon (LOL)
THE BAD
~ No issues so far
THE MEH (Could go either way)
~ not SSD
OVERALL
This is a fairly heavy drive, but that was expected. I am currently running a Sabrent nvme drive as C: as well has a Samsung evo 850 and 3 other platter drives ranging from 1TB to 6TB, including a WD Black 1TB I have used for about 4 years. I've had WD Black drives before and have never had an issue with any of them losing data or freezing up.
When I first installed this, my bios picked it up, but Windows didn't. Windows doesn't recognize drives over 2TB. It needs to be initialized and formatted to NTFS so it recognizes all the space available. This should only take a minute.
Because I game a lot and this disk is geared toward gamers, I moved World of Tanks over to the drive. It took roughly 4 minutes to move 56 GB of data. I honestly do not see any difference in game load time between this or the nvme drive. If there is a difference, it isn't much.
For now, I give this hard drive 5 stars for the reasons listed under the good above. I do not hear it spinning up or clicking. I have no problem accessing files or anything else. With hard drives, though, it is always dicey. Anyone who has had a computer (or especially built one) knows that sometimes after just a few months or a year or 2, the drive fails. If that happens, I will definitely update this.
As someone who has lost date in the past, I am reluctant to have just one drive or one copy of important info (which is why I have a 6TB drive, too). This drive will make an excellent backup to the backup. LOL. I should probably try it in a RAID array, but I am too lazy at the moment.

The Western Digital Black series drives are always rated in the top 3 for reliability in most trade mags! I've used these drives for 20 years since the "special edition" drives were released and have never been disappointed and now they have a 5-year warranty! This is a bare drive with no cables, screws, rails or other hardware included. The stated speed is 6 Gb/s with 256 MB Cache. The drive does runs “cool” even during large data transfers, and the benchmark performance is about 30% faster than my old drive. Of course, this doesn’t match the performance of an SSD drive, but it has much better response and access times than any “standard” PC drive. I’m not including a list of benchmarks since all systems vary, and the high level of performance for these drives is well known and is what gamers expect! This is a great drive for gaming in general or your Steam library!

The BEST ‘traditional’ Hard Drive you can buy…PERI

First, I must disclose that I did NOT install this inside a computer. The case my current computer is enclosed in…the NZXT H1 (please, No comments about it being a “fire hazard”, as I replaced the original riser cable with a high-quality, 3rd-party cable many, many months ago)…only has enough internal space for a single 3.5” drive, or two 2.5” drives, and I have two 2.5” SSDs in a RAID configuration. So, how did I go about installing/using this drive? Simple…I installed it into an external case with USB-C connection. Truth-be-told, when WD designed this drive, they designed it to not only go inside a computer case, they also designed it for enclosing inside an external case, as proven by them offering Xbox & PlayStation variants.
To test the drive, I compared it against two other external drives…a 2TB Seagate Backup, and a 4TB WD My Book (which contains a WD Red). Obviously, the more accurate comparison was to be against the WD My Book, not only because both are WD, but also because the My Book was newer. In short, the Seagate was somewhat close to the My Book in read/write speeds, but the My Book was still much faster. However, in comparing the 4GB My Book against the 10GB Black, the difference was noticeable…even though the Black was in an external case. Both may have been connected to a USB-A 3.2 Gen2 port, but the faster rotational speed (7200rpm vs 5400rpm), as well as the larger cache (256MB vs 128MB) gave the WD Black a considerable advantage. I’m not going to bother posting actual transfer speeds, as I, honestly, don’t know what they were. What I CAN tell you is that, in regards to transfer times, the WD My Book was about 25-40% faster than the Seagate Backup, and the WD Black was approx 50% faster than the WD My Book. That, alone, should convince those reading this that the WD Black is the best (only?) option you should be considering. Add the 5-year warranty, and it’s all the better.
There’s always the “Would you recommend this?” question…and, in many reviews, I’ve given “yes & no” answers. This is because, for some, it would be “no”, and, for others, it would be “yes. I am, once again, going to give a ‘dual’ answer…but, for entirely different reasons. For those who want/need the faster data transfer rates, I will say “no”…but, ONLY because, what you want/need is as SSD, not a traditional hard drive with spinning platters. On the other hand, for those wanting/needing the fastest traditional hard drive, the ONLY drives you should be looking at are the Black drives from WD. I have used WD Black drives in several computers (I custom build computers…mostly gaming systems…for others in my spare time, and occasionally build myself a new system. Rest assured, this Black drive WILL be staying with me. If that last sentence doesn’t answer the question that started this paragraph, nothing will.

I enjoy gaming and one of the biggest changes in the past 2 years has been the size of game files. Most AAA games are starting to require over 100GB of space per game and there are even some going over 200GB.
The days of only needing 1TB are gone. 10TB will be the new standard. However, please understand that having 10TB of space isn't about hoarding every video game you own. Its about the peace of mind knowing you can download the newest game without having to sacrifice the space of another game (or file) that you may not be ready to offload from your computer just yet.
Personally, I do a lot of photo editing and printing from my gaming PC and this new 10TB space allows me to do both the things I love without compromise on storage.
Keep in mind that you do not need a SSD to have an "ultimate" gaming experience. This WD Hard drive is a 7200rpm. That is all you need to play even the most graphically intense games. When it comes to processing the latest gamees, it comes down to RAM speed, graphics cards and computer processors.
Ideally you should want a 128-256 SSD system drive for booting your computer. Then a beautiful reliable 10TB WD_Black hard drive for all your games. However, even in 2021, this drive can also be the sole hard drive in your computer and you will still have lightening fast speeds even on boot-up.

Great Extra Storage

The WD Black Gaming 10TB Internal SATA Hard Drive for Desktops is a terrific addition to any gaming rig.
When you run games from your PC, there are three things you really want: speed, storage, and video power. This drive addresses two of those three concerns.
For a conventional HD, the WD is fast. It is rated at 7200rpm with a transfer rate of up to 263Mbps. That's very quick for a conventional HD and you don't have to worry about lag when accessing the drive. R/w speeds are very good.
The 10TB of storage is impressive and an extremely welcome addition to any desk top computer, but especially for a gaming rig. IMO, it is best used as your long-term IG data storage while you run your games directly from an SSD.
On top of that, this is a pretty quiet drive.
All in all, I'm very pleased with this WD drive and highly recommend it.

Western Digital has been raising the bar for disc drives with these new Black Gaming drives over the past few years. I use them on all builds for personal and customer streaming/race machines.
The racing games we setup for need fast and reliable hardware and the drives have to be solid to give the constant data needed all while also running streaming platforms.
The best part about this drive is the 10TB size. This will cover all this build for my next racing rig with includes a full articulating race rig.
For install, it's is no different than any other drive and starts up immediately once booted. I did 2 5TB partitions on this drive so one partition is for saving streas and the rest is for the racing games and profiles.
Do not be afraid of these drives, out of the many 100s I have used I have yet to have a failure, they are great!

I used this hard drive to replace an old WD Red drive not expecting much difference in performance but man was I wrong. This drive is actually fairly quick so much so that for a lot of the games I play I can run them off this drive instead of taking up space on my smaller SSD. Transfers to the drive where fairly quick without any real hassle and I've not experienced any performance hits from it being a larger drive. Also somewhat unexpectedly this drive seems to be quieter than my old WD Red. I would have assumed that a faster drive would be somewhat louder but that is not the case at all I can't really hear this drive at all when in use so that is also a nice surprise. I've not had the drive long enough to talk about longevity but for now its working great.

How can you not love a 10TB drive?

This is what any gaming PC, or any desktop, should have. I have an HP Omen 30L with i9 chip and RTX 3090 graphics card. It's a pretty stout machine to say the least and perfect for high end gaming. Hard drive wise, I have a 1TB NVME and 2TB SSD as the main/secondary drives. Still though, with games these days pushing upwards of 100GB in size, you run out of room pretty fast with these smaller speedy drives. Enter this WD 10TB drive and, voila, problems solved.
Speed wise, this WD drive is the slowest of all my drives. Can't really compare a spindle drive to a NVME/SSD honestly. That said, the 7200RPM drive is speedy enough for my games. I installed Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 on this drive as well as some older games and there was no issue with speeds. For such a large capacity drive, it functions quite well in terms of speed so that's really nice for this drive.
All in all, it's just really pleasant to look at in Explorer and see 10TB for my drive size. In addition to game, I also plan on moving all my media/music on this drive as well. Having been used to smaller drives, and with use of the occasional external drive, its really nice to have all my data consolidated in my desktop. Only issue/concern is longevity so we'll see how this drive holds up over time. But, in all honesty, just get the drive.

Storage... you need it
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
So plain and simple... this is a great replacement or addition to the storage solution in your gaming PC.
So this is an INTERNAL 3.5" SATA based hard driving. Meaning, it won't work inside your laptop or a micro-compact PC. This needs to be inside a case (either a full computer case, or an external case).
The basics: It is a SATA drive, the current standard connectivity in any computer built in the last 5 years. And has all the standard mounting screws for a drive of this type. It is also full size, so it will use the full 3.5" slot in that case.
Setup: there are three main ways to set this up.
a) As an extra drive in your system, where you can set it up as a new drive letter or volume, or with some tricks you can assign it to a folder.
b) As a full replacement for an existing drive. This is what I did, using software readily available... it clones my current drive, to this drive... and then expands out my partition to use the rest of the space.
c) As a new drive for a fresh install. You would connect as the drive in the system and install.
The physical drive itself, correctly reports to the system. The performance of the drive, isn't dictated by which of the 3 methods you use, but you need to know that it is close to plug and play, but you need to configure your system on using this drive.
As for performance: First the space is massive. 10TB in a single drive is big, there are very few single drives bigger. (As a side note, just 25 years ago... I purchased from Best Buy a 200MB (megabyte) hard drive, for a steal of a price. That is 0.002% the size of this new drive. But with current computing and gaming it is needed.
Modern games are using MASSIVE space, and you don't want to have to delete your games and files, just to get the newst stuff.
After install and setup, this increased the performance of my system. My load time for Microsoft Flight Simulator increased. For our Oculus Rift games, we were able to re-download some of our favorites that we had to delete for space reason.
I am still only maybe using 40% of this drive right now, so plenty of space to go. With some big releases coming, space available is great.
So if you are tight on space, snag that drive... upgrade now. As when you need the space, you will be glad you did.

It was getting close to time where I would need to free up some space on my backup/media drive on my gaming setup. Things have definitely changed since I bought my old one, and I was thrilled to see a 10TB drive with the faster speed is now available at an affordable price.
The installation and setup were a breeze, as you should expect. Drive performance has been stellar so far, nothing bad to report at all. I'm very happy with a drive that should keep me backed up and offloading media for a decade or so. Fingers crossed!

With this 10TB entry to the "black" series of performance mechanical hard drives, WD has created a product which combines outstanding capacity and quietness with solid performance.
Installation is easy with a standard SATA cable setup and I had no issues setting up the disk. Performance benchmarks (and my own 50GB file copy tests) reveal read and write speed of about 240 MB/s - almost enough to saturate a SATA2 link, but only about half as quick as my Samsung EVO 860 SSD drives when run on SATA3. That said, I won't complain about 240MB/s of sustained read or write speed for a 7200 rpm mechanical hard drive, especially one this quiet. WD has also invested in processing speed and this drive performs about 3/4 as many I/O operations per second as those Samsung SSDs. These are solid numbers and they yield quick game and level load times that are, in practice, usually not that different to loading from a SATA SSD. Obviously none of these options compare to the latest NVMe drives, but we're also in a different league in terms of cost/TB. For a mechanical hard drive, performance is exemplary.
Bottom line: If you need large amounts of storage for your games and want quick load times but aren't willing to pay the premium for ultra large solid state drives, this is a great choice.

TONS of Space

This review is going to be relatively straightforward, because really, what is there to say about a drive like this. It's Huge. I'm an avid gamer and routinely have way more installed than I could possibly play at any one time but that also means I need a ton of hard drive space.
Unfortunately I'm not so blessed as to have gone entirely solid-state yet, and even so, you can't find solid state drives of this size in the consumer market. This drive is exactly what you'd expect it to be of the WD_Black branding. It's huge and it's basically as fast as a drive of this size and this interface is expected to be. It'll hold just about anything you could possibly throw at it and more. I've essentially installed everything I have any chance of possibly playing from my steam library and probably a few I may never get to.
I have no issues recommending this drive to anyone that's just in need of a large amount of space with decent performance from a spinning hard disk. So if you're in the market for a ton of space, this is an easy choice.
