I purchased this external drive to add more storage to my Xbox one X, and my console stopped working after the download. I never had an issue with my console until I tried to install this drive. Now my console doesn’t work anymore.

So you got the hottest new release pre-ordered... digital download (Which is pretty much the only way to go)... and well you need 150-200gb for the game, and that stock storage... is full.
What do you do? Delete your brothers games? What about Mom's high records? nah... Add an external storage drive. No need to void the warranty of your xbox, or go through some complicated upgrade process... or give it to your friends cousin who knows how to do it.
This WD External USB drive, is pretty much fool proof to get going.
- No Power Supply, just the included usb cable is all is needed.
- Connect one end to the drive, and then one to the xbox and Microsoft leads you the rest of the way.
- Slick compact outer case, looks great right next to the xbox.
Just taking it out of the box, you know this drive is solid made. no moving parts, just a great feeling metallic case (important for cooling), in an XBOX styled shell, doesn't make this look bulky but that it is belongs.
The process on the XBOX changes with software upgrades, so refer to the XBOX FAQ or Microsoft's site on how to utilize the drive. But in general the process is as such:
- Approve for the storage to be added to your XBOX
- Move content that is already on the internal drive (or another External device), to the new drive
- Choose if you want the external or the internal to be the destination for new content.
And that is it, after some time to move the files... you are good to go.
I personally feel, that I have seen an improvement in load time on some of my larger games. But I have no way to actually test that objectively, as there is so many factors.
But what I can tell you, is that I don't need to pick and choose now what stays and what goes. It's going to be a while till I fill up this new drive, so good to go.
So if you don't have the space for that next DLC, and Season Pack... don't get a new Xbox... just add this external drive

Compact storage solution

Compact, black, speedy performance. I have this drive connected to my Xbox Series X and use it to store extra games. Setup was very easy. After plugging it in for the first time you will be prompted to format the drive for your console but this process is completed quickly, within a couple minutes. You will also be asked if you want to use the external drive as the primary drive, which I did. After that you are good to go. Since it is SSD the performance is fast. I must note that on a couple random occasions a window would pop up on the screen saying the drive is ready to use, as it had just been plugged in, which is unusual. I hope this is not indicative of future problems. All in all I happy with the product. It's always nice to have extra storage that accesses your information quickly.

Drive seems fairly quick and have seen different load times for the games placed on it. Test mainly COD Black Ops IV and noticed a difference right away. Battlefield did play very similarly to how it did when directly on my box. Overall, the drive is very cool looking, reminds me of a pelican case a bit. It is missing a common cable used more widely in today’s industry, USB-C interface. Not sure how expensive would be to purchase. Tested with OEM cables from the package. Would like to have a larger size. Recommended for those with smaller gaming libraries, but if you already know you will want the space, op…maybe opt for a larger drive as 2TB does fill rather quickly these days.

Great Xbox One games or Series X archive

Summary: A great little hard drive to expand your storage options while looking cool! Easy to use, set up and stylish.
Pros:
Looks awesome!
Easy to set up
No external power needed
Compact
Stays cool, little heat
Cons:
Not an SSD, stuck as mechanical hard drive speeds
Not good for games that need SSD speeds
Unboxing:
The unit comes in a compact package. Inside you will find the hard drive, a USB 3.2 connector (USB A to USB Micro B), some documentation (including a Xbox game pass trial).
Installation:
After plugging it into a Xbox One Series X, the prompt to format the hard drive appears and asks if you want to make it the primary installation drive. I kept it as a secondary but it was nice to get the prompt.
Use:
Using the drive is very straightforward, after it is set up, any use is mainly in the background if it is the primary device. If it is your secondary hard drive, you might need to manage your storage on the Xbox to move games back and forth as needed. I recommend using older games on the external hard drives and using newer games on the internal SSD since it is faster.
The external hard drive is rated for 130 MB/s which is greatly different from the internal drive at 2.4 GB/s (uncompressed) so if you are looking to fast load times and more modern games that require faster data streaming this might pose an issue. Some Xbox One Series X games might require an SSD so be aware. If you are looking to hold older Xbox One games or have a place to move games back and forth (archive) so you don’t need to redownload, this is a great solution.
The drive has a solid metallic build and looks like it will last. There is a white indicator light for hard drive activity that is very bright. The two tone finish which is mostly black with white accents looks very cool.

Slick looking slim external hard drive. Plug and play with you Xbox. Lots of storage, which is a must it’s the size of games these days. Quick transfer from internal to external drive. Was able to play Need for Speed for Xbox One directly off the external hard drive with no problems what so ever. Easy way to increase your storage. Highly recommend

Extra Storage!

Many Xbox models come with limited storage these days, especially if you buy the lower cost versions with small hard drives. These Western Digital external hard drives are the perfect solution for folks that own some of these models and want to expand their storage capacity for games. Games take up A LOT of hard drive space these days with the average game taking about 50 GB. This can limit you to 6 or 7 games installed at a time on the Xbox models with small internal hard drives.
Set-up is extremely easy, just plug your hard drive in and it is recognized automatically by your Xbox. When downloading games you can choose to have them installed on your internal hard drive or the external hard drive and you can set either one as your preferred option in your settings. With the 500 GB hard drive on my older Xbox, I often had to delete games to make room for new ones. With external storage, I can now install dozens of games easily without having to be so picky about what I keep downloaded.
This device comes in 2TB and 5TB sizes. 2 terabytes will be enough for most people, but if you have a huge game library, go for the 5TB. This device comes with a 3 year warranty, which provides nice peace of mind!

Hooked this drive up to my XBox One. Had to use the bottom most USB connection on the back (instructions only show the connection for the newest XBox console). The XBox rebooted and let me know the drive had to be formatted, which took under a minute. After that, my XBox essentially has what I consider 'unlimited' space. I was constantly pushing my space limits on the out of the box drive, which is a real issue since nearly everything nowadays either runs from the harddrive even when you own the disc, or it's digital. I jumped into Game Pass Ultimate and downloaded everything I even considered playing - still PLENTY of room to spare.
I even moved some locally installed games over. It feels to me like they actually load faster from the new drive.
The drive is small, and looks nice (for what it is). No detectable noise. No extra power cord.
I love everything about this. I wish I had one years ago.
The only downside was the the Game Pass 1 month trial does not work for those with an existing account. I think that's a MS issue and not WD however.

Very fast for a non SSD drive.
Transferred a 188GB file at a consistent 118-121 MBPS.
Be advised these need to be properly formatted in an XBOX before first use as the XBOX used a multi format file structure to enable faster game response.
Advise that you put all your games and apps on an external drive so when you need to reset your system you will not lose all your games and apps.
Then load a game or two on your boot drive that needs the extra speed.
These black drives for XBOX have always been a fast, reliable, and cheap solution for extra storage. I have several 1-5 TB sized versions in my stable and they all work as advertised.

I have been using this hard drive as expanded storage for my Xbox Series X. It couldn't possibly be easier to set up as it is very simply plug and play. I also have an Xbox One X in another room I use occasionally and it is very easy to unplug and move to another system for games I frequently play. The transfer speed is very quick if I want to move to the system's internal storage. It should be noted that to take advantage of the Series X speed and frame rate optimizations you will need to have the game stored on your system directly. Games that you play from this drive run very smoothly with no hiccups or stutters.

Inexpensive, Attractive Drive for Xbox storage

This drive does exactly what it’s supposed to do: add external storage for games for your Xbox, but it can also work for PC storage if need be.
There’s nothing more than just plugging this drive in and it adds some extra storage for games. I really like the external design of this drive as it’s definitely more attractive than most standard external HDDs with an industrial, rugged look to it.
The only thing I would note is that this is an HDD and not an SSD so transfer speeds will be around 130MB/s.

Nice little spinning platter - Strange in 2021

THis WD BLACK gaming drive has good performance on my XBOX and on my Gaming PC, which both seem to handle it well enough - At what point are spinning platter drives (even 7200RPM ones) just good enough? It works. Its nothing special, so I'm not sure I understand the pricing or the hype around these new drives. Here are a few things that could change my mind:
Please stop using the USB-Micro-B 3,0 interface. That "1.5 Micro B" interface is ugly, only inserts in one direction, and has those little claw-pins that make USB MIcro B one of the worst interfaces ever. This drive in 2021 should have come with a Type C connector and A-C cable for the price.
The cool metallic/dark top case is great for both aestetics and heat dissipation, but why use the el-cheapo white polycarb plastic bottom? Make the whole thing metal like you do the WD BLACK SSDs? Or at least use black plastic on the bottom. Terrible look considering the crate/container vibe they're going for is offset terribly by the start CLEAN WHITE bottom. Just a visual thing.
I love the thin-ness of the drive, especially considering its a 2.5mm 7200RPM drive that will need some heat dissipated. It doesn't get too warm, fits in entertainment shelves nicely, and is WHISPER quiet... Good device, but strange design choices for 2021. Get your brand house in order WD! WOuld reccomend if it was a cheaper option.

I love these expandable storage drives for my consoles. I have two of the 3TB models connected to the Xbox Series S for my boys and I now have this 2TB on my Xbox Series X.
It's convenient to add all of your non X|S enhanced games to the external storage, installation is simple enough plug the drive in using the provided USB cable, no additional power needed with this form factor, and format using the console itself. You can set it for additional game storage or saving your game clips you record through the capture feature on your Xbox.(which I have never done but it is an option).
I would recommend anyone looking to expand their storage for Xbox One, 360 or Original Xbox on their Series or One consoles. The varied storage options make it a great choice for anyone looking to expand their base storage.

There isn't much to say when reviewing a hard drive or other storage device. It's a solid block of tech that holds your stuff (digitally speaking). Whatever its storage capacity is in Gigabytes or Terabytes determines how much stuff you can cram into it, and whatever its connection type is (USB 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, . . . etc.) determines how quickly you can move files to and from it.
It either holds enough of your stuff or it doesn't, and it's either fast enough for your needs or it isn't.
What ultimately differentiates a "good" storage device from a "bad" storage device is how well it's designed and how well that design fits your individual needs.
This WD gaming drive is relatively thin, fast, solidly built, and aesthetically "meh." My only real complaints about it is that I wouldn't have minded a slightly longer cable, and I would have preferred a different color scheme.
I was a little surprised to see that the drive has a micro-USB 3.0 (3.1?) port instead of USB type-C. This could make it a little difficult to find a replacement cord should something happen to the cord that came with it.
I say that the design is "meh" because I'm not all that keen on the whole "corrugated metal" look it has going on. It reminds me of a shipping container. I will give WD brownie points though for using a metal shell instead of plastic.
I'm also not all that keen on the current trend of black and white tech. I'd have preferred black and traditional Xbox Green or maybe black and red.
The drive is formatted as NTFS out of the box and is also compatible with Windows computers.
2TB is a pretty good amount of storage space. If you figure that an average game is around 50GB, then this drive should be able to hold around 30-40 games (assuming that's all you put on it).
The drive seems fairly fast. It's not the fastest hard drive that I've ever seen, but it doesn't take years to transfer files on and off of it either.
The drive is fairly small, and it won't take up a lot of shelf space. It looks like it's about the same size as a 2.5" SATA, laptop hard drive; but it's a little thinner.
I think that this is a solid drive for your gaming setup, and I would recommend picking one up.

WD_BLACK P10 2TB Game Drive for Xbox External USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5GB/s) Portable Hard Drive USB Type-A to Micro-B cable. This is of course an HDD not an SDD. The read speed on the box says up to 140 MB/s while on the web page it says 130 MB/s. While the drive is fast enough for me it might not be for others. What I have seen stated though it is not fast enough for XBOX Series S/X exclusive or optimized games. So this drive is perfect for either backing up your games and taking with you or storing older games while leaving space on your internal drive for newer games. Drive is 2.5 " thin and white on bottom and edges and black on top with XBOX logo. Looks cool and matches well with either series. Can't find what the case is made of but appears to be plastic and feels like it could survive some falls. Cable supplied is 19 inches and long enough to sit next to your XBOX. Drive is quiet and comes already formated for PC. When I plugged it into my XBOX it asks if I want to use it as a media drive or for installing games. When I chose installing games it took less than a second to format. Overall this is a good drive to have for transporting games to friends homes but not good for playing XBOX Series S/X exclusive or optimized games.
