    Great storage for Gaming

Storage is everything. I remember when I had to use multiple floppy disks just to save a document and now we have portable hard drives that are the size of a deck of cards that can store terabytes of data. Last fall, I was lucky enough to snag an Xbox Series X console system and I just recently subscribed to the Game Pass system that Microsoft provides for users. I found several older games that I’ve always enjoyed and even though I invested in a larger hard drive in my console, I was concerned about running out of system space with all of these downloads. That’s why this WD_Black P10 hard drive comes in handy. This hard drive is designed specifically with gamers in mind. The hard drive can reach speeds up to 130 MB/s read/write. It’s a mechanical 2.5-inch hard drive and works through a USB 3.2 G 1 interface. The hard drive comes with a cable and instruction manual for operation. It also comes with a promo code for 2 months of Xbox Game Pass, which does come in handy. WD includes a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty for parts and labor. The hard drive is black with white trim and it looks great with the Xbox Series X console. It is offered in different capacity sizes up to 5TB, but I chose the 4TB version. The hard drive is a 5400RPM drive, but performs quite well for a mechanical drive. When you plug the hard drive into your console, a message will pop up automatically to ask if you would like to format the hard drive. You have the option to use it for media or for game backups. It you want to use it for game backups, you will need to format it. As a word of warning, once you format it, the hard drive won’t be readable by other computer systems. When the drive is connected, you can manage it later through System Settings. The drive seems to load games pretty fast and with a 4TB HDD, it will certainly have plenty of space to store saved games. It’s very easy to operate and other than the special compatibility with console systems, it’s not much different from a standard HDD when it comes to function. The speeds won’t be as fast as the internal storage on the console simply because the WD_Black isn’t an SSD. Overall, it’s a good hard drive though and I’ve trusted WD for years with data storage. I love that I have this as an option for additional storage for gaming.

Great little drive, but only 5400rpm speed

Great little drive, but a little disappointed it is only a 5400 rpm drive. Before connecting to my actual Xbox Series X - I connected it to a windows 10 computer and ran it thru it’s paces in CrystalDiskMark, a hard drive benchmarking software. The drive was already formatted as a NTFS formatted windows drive. CrystalDiskMark revealed the drive to actually be a slower speed 5400 RPM drive. This for general game storage is not too bad, and read and write speeds were actually very good on both Windows 10 and also when tested further on my Xbox Series X - moving games over from the Series X internal SSD. The drive did hit about 39 degrees celsius when connected to my Windows 10 machine for benchmarking, via copying around 3.5 terabytes of game data to it. CrystalDiskMark information: Enclosure : WD Game Drive USB Device (V=1058, P=2638, sa1) - wd Model : WDC WD40NMZW-59A8NS1 Firmware : 01.01A01 Disk Size : 4000.7 GB (8.4/137.4/4000.7/4000.7) Buffer Size : Unknown Queue Depth : 32 # of Sectors : 7813971632 Rotation Rate : 5400 RPM Interface : USB (Serial ATA) Major Version : ACS-3 Minor Version : ACS-3 Revision 4 Transfer Mode : SATA/600 | SATA/600 Power On Hours : 12 hours Power On Count : 4 count Temperature : 28 C (82 F) Health Status : Good Features : S.M.A.R.T., APM, 48bit LBA, NCQ, TRIM APM Level : 0080h [ON] Now... on to my Xbox Series X part of review. it loads most old games pretty fast for a mechanical 5400rpm drive. However, this drive will absolutely fit the bill holding tons of those older generation games, particularly for those that have access to Xbox Game Pass. The drive itself also comes with a 2 month free game pass Ultimate code in the box. Ultimate, is the version of Xbox Game Pass that also gives Windows 10 gamers access to Windows games. I was already a Game Pass Ultimate member for about a year now, and this is an added bonus, and great way to get your feet wet, with tons of games, on both Xbox consoles, and Windows 10 gaming computers. I recommend you get this drive if you need to really hold that many games on your xbox library. Even if you just use it to temporarily move games from your Xbox Series X or S, from the SSD, so that you don’t have to re-download huge games. This is a big deal for those in parts of the United States that are on monthly data caps with their internet service provider. It is also just no fun to have to redownload some of these huge games in recent years.

    Pretty Standard External HD

So I already had an external solid state drive that I was using with my Xbox One X but I do not like to remove games so the 2 TB drive was close to getting full. Rather than by another generic drive I decided to try buying a larger HD that is built specifically for gaming; where the HD is constantly on and actively reading and writing. I picked up this WD drive. I did not notice anything too great about it compared to the generic external HD I was using. I performed a speed test and the WD read/write speeds were actually slightly lower than my old drive. I have not noticed the difference myself when playing games as load time seems identical to me. I am hoping that it lasts and that the failure rate is low but that is something only time will tell.

Increased my xbox one s storage. Connected to xbox and setup came right up, simple to use. The white and black design looks great with my xbox. Doesn't include a usb-c cable, but it's labeled for xbox and that's what I'm using it on,not a problem for me. No power connector or plug to deal with, one cable. Got on sale so got 4gb instead of 5gb.

It works great for what I need it for! Note works for holding all X-Box games but you can not play Series X/S enhanced game from it. You can play X-Box One, 360, and Original X-Box off of it though.

An Inexpensive and Fantastic Storage Solution

The one terabyte drive on my Xbox was pretty full. We were to the point that we were having to delete games when we wanted to install new games, and then having to do the same when we wanted to play the games we had deleted. I had considered getting an external hard drive prior, but most of them want you to have an additional power source and they can be bulky. The P10 bundles a lot of great features into one small package. It is 4 TB, which is a ton of space for even the most memory intensive games. It runs off of the USB port without a need for an additional power source. It is relatively snappy. It is compact and can be taken on the run if you would like to take your games to a different Xbox to play. Plug and play connection made everything easy. I did have to restart the Xbox, as it didn't 'see' the P10 at first, but after reboot it showed up in the device list and allowed me to move several games over to it, freeing up the space on the hard drive. We played The Show 21, NBA 2k21, and Madden 21 off of the hard drive and had no issues with buffering or the game hanging up. The speed was great, and there were no malfunctions. All in all, for the size of the drive (storage), its portability and compactness, and ease of use, I say it is well worth the purchase.

This 4TB drive works great as a replacement/enhancement for your XBOX. With games getting larger in size these days with all the updates, the original drive gets filled up pretty quickly and you're having to play/delete/play/delete games. With this drive, there's considerably much less of that. I'm up to about 1.3TB used on my drive so I got plenty of room left for other games. After formatting, there's about 3.4TB available space. Read/Write speeds are good and I don't experience any lag/delays when loading games. The drive also works well for PC too. Drive is portable and seems beefy so looks like it should hold up if you accidentally drop the drive. Overall, great little item to expand drive space on your console.

I got one of these for my Xbox Series X console. I already owned a previous WD external hard drive but it was meant for PC/MAC. I transferred all my games from my old external to the Xbox to the WD Black hard drive. The speed was great. I transferred Cold War, 205 GB game in less than 30 mins. The hard drive was easy to set up. I just formatted and It was ready to go. I now have all my games on the external hard drive. I did notice though that COD Cold War was not working properly when it was transferred to the external hard drive. I tried restarting the console. Nothing worked. I decided to transfer the game back to the Xbox and it works just fine. I did not like it, that is the reason I deducted one star. Also, the hard drive stays on even when the Xbox is off. You'll see the light blinking at night. I normally disconnected. I do not feel comfortable leaving it on all day and night. I feel the hard drive will wear and tear sooner. Idk just me. I like the external hard drive and recommend it for the price! It's 4 TB!

WD Black are by far the best spinning drive (IMO). But, do not buy this for the 2-months free Xbox Game Pass. I thought it would be a good benefit for me, but the Xbox keys expired 6/21/2021. Insert sad face here.

    Xbox Series S Must-Have

As any owner of a current Gen Xbox knows, the included internal hard drive space is not very big, and that limited space can disappear quickly. This is particularly true of the Series S since the only way to play games on it is to download them. Enter the WD Black External HDD. Setup and drive formatting takes no time at all. And, even though it's an external drive, it performs faily quickly. I had a few games downloaded to the internal HDD prior to getting the WD Black, so I was already familiar with the Series S download speeds on my network. Having configured the Series S to use the WD Black as the primary drive whenever possible, I haven't notice much lag in perfomance, even when downloading games straight to the external drive. Although not every game can be stored and played straight from the external drive, transferring or copying game data from the WD Black to the Series S internal storage is fairly quick. I really can't complain about the time it takes for transfer because it beats having to re-download the game if it's deleted from internal storage. I feel that 4 TB should give me a good amount of space for a fairly sizable library of games. Another great feature is that the drive can be used on other Xbox systems so if I eventually add a Series X to our household, I can share the drive between them.

    Great Gaming HDD

The WD P10 4GB Hard Drive is the perfect size for anyone who has a lot of games. The hard drive is a beast, it has a hard durable metal shell that keeps it protected if you plan on transporting with you. It cones with a USB 3.2 cable to connect it to your PC or Xbox. Although I’m not quite sure why WD didn’t make it USB-C given how thats the new form factor for the latest systems, but it still works well. It has a fast transfer speed up to 100gb/s. The HDD can be used as either a hard drive for media, documents and music, or it can be used as a drive to store your Xbox games. Choosing which one is very simple, once you plug it into the xbox, it will ask you how you want to use it and then format it for you. I was curious to see if the transfer rate was as accurate as it claims to be, so I tried it out by moving a few games from my internal HDD to the WD. The transfer speeds are up to par, and I was getting fast speeds as advertised. Playing off the HDD is great, as it doesn’t make any noise. It also complements my white Xbox one S, with the black and white trim. Overall, I am really happy with the WD P10. It hold enough storage to hold all my games, it has fast transfer speeds, and it is virtually silent. I would recommend this to anyone looking to more storage to store their games.

    Good drive for backups

I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review. The WD Black P10 Game Drive for Xbox is a fast way to backup games on a Series X or Series S system, and is also fast enough to play games off of on an Xbox One, One S, or One X. Setup on the Xbox is super easy - just plug in and follow the on-screen prompts. Once it's set up, you can use the drive to store games. It's fairly quick, too, especially for a traditional hard drive. I did connect the P10 to a Windows PC and got 125 megabyte per second read speeds and 120 megabyte per second write speeds on large files. For sake of comparison to other hard drives, small files were read between 512 kilobytes (half a megabyte) and 2.5 megabytes per second, and written between 512 kilobytes and 24.5 megabytes per second. Because speed claims are always based on longer file reads and writes, I'll give WD credit on this drive living up to its speed claims. There are a few areas this drive does fall short for me, however. First, it uses the USB Micro B connector instead of USB-C, so if you break the cable or need a longer cable, it's not as readily available. Second, white the white indicator light was a nice touch, the rest of the aesthetics are bad; the drive should have been a solid color (black, white, or Xbox Green). Third, my drive got warm while copying Master Chief Collection (150GB) from the Xbox to the P10; ventilation should have been a thing on this. Finally, and again, why didn't this drive get a USB-C port instead of the USB Micro B port? So as far as recommending this goes, it'll all in what your needs are. Do you need extra space on your Xbox One, One S, or One X device? Go for it. Do you want to be able to quickly move games on and off a backup for when you want to play them on your Series S or Series X? This is perfect for you. Are you not concerned about speed and money's tight? You could save some money with a less expensive external drive at the same capacity. For the performance, however, it's a good value.

When I bought our Xbox, I opted for the 500gb option—big mistake! We quickly ran out of room as we purchased more and more games and expanded our library, especially with the really intense games that take up huge amounts of hard drive space. Enter this product, an external portable hard drive made specifically for the Xbox. It instantly gave us the hard drive space we so desperately needed. We got the 4TB version so we would be set for a long time. We went from having practically no space available (we couldn’t even download any new games!), to now having terabytes of space available. Set up is easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy. Just attach the included cable to the Game Drive, then plug in the other end (a USB-A interface) to your Xbox. The Xbox will walk you through the setup, where you can effortlessly transfer games from the Xbox hard drive to the external Game Drive, and direct the Xbox to download/save games in the future to the external Game Drive from that point on. And bonus—it also comes with 2 FREE months of Xbox Game Pass! But redeem it sooner rather than later because there is an expiration date for redemption. On a side note, this external hard drive will also work for PC gamers, since it connects via a USB-A port.
