NO SCREW
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.FYI TO ANYONE CONSIDERING BUYING THIS HARD DRIVE: It does NOT come with a screw to hold it in place. This renders the hard drive almost useless as over time it will back out of the slot without a screw to hold it in. For 4 months it worked fine and now it's completely useless. Lost everything on it because it now won't stay in and keeps crashing. DO NOT BUY THIS HARD DRIVE.

Fast Drive, Easy Installation
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was my first experience installing an M.2 SDD, and it was incredibly easy. It look less than 10 minutes to install the drive in my laptop, then it took around 10 minutes to entirely install Windows 10. My laptop is blazing fast, and with such a fast and painless install, how can you go wrong? I highly recommend this drive!

Unfortunately, it doesn't work in my laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I planned on using this drive in my Acer Nitro 5 laptop. It has a M2 slot available and I figured it being pretty new that it would accept the NVMe card. I looked online at what it takes to open up the unit since the only two access doors are for the 2.5 drive and memory. It's fairly painless, just 20 screws. Then the slot is visible and tada...so I figured. Turns out the Intel version of this laptop has the bios and/or hardware to run the drive, but the AMD Ryzen cpu doesn't. You can't alter the settings in bios and the card is unrecognizable when you boot up. The slot only accepts sata drives at this time and I'm unsure if an update would fix it. Acer just did a firmware update to the bios to fix the keyboard backlight. Hopefully there's a way they can get the bios to allow the slot to use NVMe drives. Until then, this drive will have to stay boxed up until I can find another use for it. That said, it's not the drives fault. I imagine it runs great, just like my other WD products. I would bet this card is way faster than my SSD drive I installed last month and that thing boots to Windows in about 10 seconds! I wish I could have used this in the laptop. Maybe WD can contact AMD or Acer and help them get the fix rolling. I'm guessing many end users are going to have this issue, since it looks like the slot would accept either card based on looks alone. Bummer, but that tech.

Incredibly Fast SSD
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using SSDs in my PC builds since they were first available. We all know how they improve overall system speed especially disk intensive operation like OS and app loading, file copying, etc... However, this latest generation of high performance NVMe SSDs which are up to 7-8 times faster than the first SSDs I used really up the ante. For games, boot times are much faster than with traditional hard drives (obviously), but even noticeably faster than the early generation SSDs. These WD black brand has always been WDs performance line of storage solutions, and they continue that tradition here. Its performance is right up there with the other big brands in benchmarks and in real life and gaming, it does not disappoint. Initial game loading times are improved by 10% or so over non-NVMe SSDs and by 50% or so over traditional hard drives. This is an easy upgrade choice to make if you are a gamer or power user.

||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Lasted a whole month the failed. Moved it to another pc and it would not detect either so it wasnt just the laptop that I had originally put it in. First time I have an issue with an ssd in a long time. Fast and easy!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Review for WD - Black SN750 NVMe SSD 500GB Internal PCI Express 3.0 x4 (NVMe) Solid State Drive for Laptops Although it says it’s for laptops, I put this nice NVMe into my Dell spiron Desktop (AMD Ryzen 7 1700, 16GB Memory, AMD Radeon RX 580, 1TB Hard Drive) and had no problems with the install. (I had read about the fact that the PC does not include a screw for the NVMe slot and WD does not include any hardware with the drive itself, so I ordered one online for a ridiculous price.) With the right hardware and a static cuff, install was super easy. Access to the Dell motherboard is straightforward and I was done in five minutes. Configuring the drive took about another 3 hours (!) but that’s on Windows 10, not the hardware. The drive itself is beyond fast! It loads games and other programs in a fraction of the time required by the HDD (also a given), but also much faster than a standard SSD.

Fast Boot and Great Performance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This improved my cold boot times significantly on my old machine and made it useable for all but the most demanding games, but installation wasn't as straight forward as I hoped. I ended up doing a clean Windows install and that fixed the problem. If you're looking to play around on an old machine and want to learn, this is a great drive for a great price. I wouldn't use it on my primary machine if you aren't experienced in installation, just because you could end up needing to do a full install.

Among the fastest available with bonus heatsink...
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the final chapter in an interesting series of upgrades on a HP Envy laptop. OEM laptop had a 16GB Intel Optane memory chip with 7200 rpm 1TB hard drive. As delivered, the laptop performed well and the Optane chip gave a noticeable boost to boot time and general responsiveness of more frequently used programs. The first upgrade was to deactivate the Optane chip and replace the spinning hard drive with a Samsung 860 QVO 2TB Internal SATA Solid State Drive. No offense to the Optane concept, which certainly improves performance over a spinning drive, but the improvement in boot time and responsiveness was quite noticeable with the SSD upgrade. The second upgrade was to pull the deactivated Optane chip and replace with this WD SN 750 NVMe SSD. Simple enough to clone the Samsung 860 to the WD NVMe drive to switch the boot and OS to the NVMe. Doing some research ahead of time, most seemed to indicate that the improvement in boot time and general OS responsiveness would be pretty much the same comparing the SATA SSD to the M.2 NVMe SSD, and true enough that seemed to be the case, at least with this laptop. There was a slight improvement of a few seconds on the boot time, and perhaps a little snappier response when opening programs or generally using the OS, but not much of a difference. I am staying with the NVMe SSD as the OS drive and for moderately sized games, and using the SATA SSD for large games and media files as the best configuration. With this said, I would suggest that someone looking for a good gaming experience settle on NVMe as first choice, SATA SSD as second choice, Optane and spinning HD as third choice. This is not a fantastic insight as most folks looking at what to buy or how to upgrade for a nicely performing laptop (or desktop) would probably come to the same conclusion without having to try out all the different configurations for themselves. OK with that aside, the gaming performance of this NVMe SSD is to be considered, particularly with the streamlined heatsink that has been added for this newest WD SN750 NVMe SSD model. There is HP Dashboard software to be installed that allows the user to switch to a "gaming mode" that prevents the NVMe SSD from going into a low-power mode to ensure peak performance during game play. Thus, HP added the heat sink "slab" to the NVMe to help keep improve chip cooling. At first I was concerned about being able to fit the NVMe drive into a laptop, considering the extra bulk added by the heatsink, but found "no problem" with installing the drive, as the heatsink has a slim profile. For gaming, there is no question that the NVMe SSD provides better performance than the SATA SSD. After an extended period of game play, or running an extended benchmark, the case of the laptop does not feel any warmer in the area of the NVMe SSD, and checking the thermals on the WD Dashboard show the NVMe staying within the recommended operating temperature range. Running extended benchmarks with gaming mode OFF and then ON does show some differences in performance that favor the gaming mode ON setting, but the observable differences are small. This seems to be one of those improvements that perform well on the specification sheets and benchmark scores, and although not delivering a stunning outcome still keep the machine updated and prepared for the future. With price always a consideration, choosing this NVMe SSD boils down to a few basic decisions: SPEED - if you want the fastest speed, go with the NVMe over a SATA drive. COOLING - the addition of a heatsink for this laptop model NVMe does make a difference, and will help protect the drive from overheating. Really, these days their is really not a "bad choice" to make when deciding between SATA SSD and NVMe SSD - as both are fast performers as long as you are choosing from the top-end models of established companies. NVMe is the newest and fastest, SATA is nothing to sneeze at. I believe for most it will come down to making the best choice that fits in the budget. If purchasing a SSD such as this one as an upgrade for an exisiting laptop - as long as your motherboard will accommodate it's hard to not recommend going for the NVMe to get the best performance.

Good Performance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the new fast WD black PCIe NVMe drive from Western Digital. Trades blows with the 960 Pro and EVO. One of the fastest consumer SSDs you can buy today. If you want great, leading-edge performance for a bit less than the cost of the Samsung 960s, this is your drive. Not to be confused with the previous, slower version of this drive. You can tell the difference by noting that this has 3D nand, not two, and its markings state "Western Digital WD Black" on the label. Don't confuse the cheaper WD Black 500GB with this. You are talking a major difference in performance. This is the first PCIe NVMe to come out to really trade blows with the fastest Samsung parts in some time.
