Ample size and speed from Western Digital Black

This Western Digital Black NVME hard drive is blazing fast and offers ample disk space in one of the easiest PC upgrades out there. If you are stuck with a laptop that only comes with 256GB hard drive, which most sub-$700 laptops come with, this is a cheap way to increase size and have blazing speed opening games, apps, multitask, and video editing. Doing a clean install of Windows 10 on this NVME disk is super easy. Windows 10 will install based on your computer serial numbers. Installation was simple. Absolutely saw no lag or delays in opening up games such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Valorant was not a problem. Creating 4K videos for upload onto Youtube is great now that you don't have to find a secondary space to store your raw videos while you edit it. You can edit it straight on the main C: drive with this installed. If you have the luxury of having a spare PCIe slot for a secondary NVME SSD, than this is a no brainer. Will be much smaller than a 1TB spinning disk drive. Overall, definitely either upgrade your small hard drive or add to expand your storage with his super fast hard drive from WD Black.

Nice budget drive. Not for PS5

Pro:
-Price
-Performance
Con:
-Doesn’t meet spec for PS5
This NVMe is a good choice for someone looking at a more budget friendly drive. Even though it’s at a lower price, it’s still fast as expected, and should meet the needs for all but the heaviest of tasks. The specs don't meet the requirements for the PS5 so it’s not recommended to be used for that.
I didn’t have any issues with the initial installation. It was recognized right away and all it needed was to be initialized. Nitpicking, but it doesn’t look like the clean black labeled back like it is on the package, but rather a black bare pcb. It doesn’t really matter since it’ll likely be covered up by the heatsink anyway. A heatsink should be used for Gen 4, since it can get hot, especially under heavy usage.
Performance wise, it doesn’t have the fastest speeds, but for gaming or light content creation, this should be fine. I can play games while recording a video in OBS without any encoding errors. Editing video shouldn’t be a problem with smooth playback and didn’t have any stuttering or hitch in the rendering.

Thus far a very positive experience with the WD_Black SN770 SSD. Installation was very easy and no compatibility issues with any of the existing hardware as we added it to an existing desktop computer. The 1TB storage is great and allows for more than enough space, with room to grow for future games or work files. The SN770 in terms of speed and size comes in so handy for so many applications for content creators. Speeds are very fast for transferring items to and from the drive and very quick to access items on the drive. Editing content is facilitated by the NVMe technology that has thus far met its promise in terms of speed, responsiveness and power. Game play with this drive has also been great. Speeds surely will vary based on user hardware, but WD quotes speeds up to 5150MB/sec read and 4900MB/sec write.
It's nice that the drive comes with a five year warranty and is a great value with very nice specs. As with other experiences we've had with DRAM-less drives this one has been positive and we'd highly recommend the WD_Black SN770 SSD.

Review for
WD - WD_BLACK SN770 1TB Internal PCIe Gen 4 x4 Solid State Drive
“Blazingly fast” may be overused to describe new tech, but in this case, it’s right on the nose! Its Gen4 architecture is designed for fast game loading and improved gameplay, but it’s a great choice for content production, too.
I’m in video production and moving big video files around is sometimes tedious and slow. Not with the WD_BLACK SN770. It’s eased my workflow by letting me import and export massive files in seconds. The speed of the WD_Black SN770 lets me get my work done faster as the video files build in record time! One terabyte of storage allows me create and store hours of video on the drive.
It was a breeze to install - popped open my PC, inserted the drive, and fastened it with a screw. Done! (Note: my PC came with the fastening screw in place but not all machines do. So be sure to have the correct screw before you begin. If I could ding my review with a half star, it would be that WD doesn’t include a screw with drive.)

This Western Digital NVMe SSD is excellent. I installed it as a second hard drive in a HP all-in-one PC. Installation was a breeze, it fits right into an M2 format slot. Fired up the computer, went to Disk Management in Windows 11, and initialized and formatted the drive. That's all there was to it.
The drive is super fast and in my computer it runs very cool. I expect it to continue to perform well for many years.
I use the drive as a data storage drive since my PC also has a NVMe SSD for the operating system. I run lots of games using the Steam platform, and have configured it to store downloaded content on this drive. Loading and saving games from the drive is lighting fast. With 1 TB, there is plenty of space to store my stuff.
Overall, I highly recommend this SSD

Fantastic desktop upgrade!

The WD Black SN770 is an excellent choice to upgrade an older/smaller solid state drive or a hard drive. Write speeds are great for storing and accessing data like photos and videos. Performance wise, this drive is well suited for nearly all storage cases but seems to perform especially well for video editing and accessing applications from. I used this to upgrade my boot drive from a smaller 256 GB drive (gen 3) to this. Even if your motherboard only supports gen 3 this drive still is blazing fast and will still work with it and the write speeds are definitely improved over the last generation of drives.
Upgrading yourself is not too difficult in most desktops and laptops. First check to see if your motherboard has an NVME slot and if it has a drive. If it does, and you only have one slot, there's an easy way to deal with that by either cloning the drive to a hard drive (which requires a lot more steps) or grab an NVME USB adapter. With the adapter simply boot in to windows and clone the existing NVME drive to the new on mounted with the USB adapter, then swap the drives once completed. There are plenty of guides on how to do it on YouTube and Best Buy's geek squad can also do this for you and probably not for much more than buying the adapter with a lot less effort!
For me, once the upgrade was complete, loading programs like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator seem to load slightly faster than they did before and skipping through videos in preview was noticeably faster on 4k videos recorded with my phone. I'd definitely recommend this upgrade, especially if you have a hard drive or a smaller boot drive and you do a lot of media editing or consumption.

Speed and Reliability in Mind

So m.2 SSDs are some of the fastest solid state drives that exist on the market today. Western Digital has always been a reliable company in regards to manufacturing hard drives and solid-state drives. When I received the SSD the packaging was just as expected with the solid-state drive protected well from the elements damage and electrostatic issues. Installation in my laptop with seamless with no issues as expected. Once I initialized the drive, I immediately installed different types of media onto the drive including video games, 4K video, and editing software. First thing I wanted to test is transfer speed so I moved some files around and using a large 4K video file I tested the speed of the SSD. It did not disappoint out performing most of the SSDs that I currently own. I then booted up my editing software while using the same 4K footage and I experienced almost instantaneous responses while editing with no lag or delay. Finally when I booted up a very common FPS game the game was able to keep up with the many changes and variables that come with first person shooter games. Although my graphics card was what held the load on the graphics side, the loading and processing of the game itself was almost instantaneous. Without a doubt a must have for anyone who wants fast and reliable performance in their computing machine!

Works Good In Single Drive Mode But In Raid 0 they Fall back to PCIE 3 mode not the controller Using the amd raidxpert2 Controller on the Asus ProArt X670E-CREATOR and it don't do it with Samsung. The 980 Pro gets full PCIE4 speeds in Raid 0 the WD Does Not. Was Black Friday Deal so not going to bother return I may find use at later date.

Affordable Speed & Gaming Performance!

The SN770 comes in at an amazing price but still offers fantastic speed in my gaming rig! It took me about 15 minutes to get it installed into my available M.2 slot, get my PC closed up, and get back to it. I migrated all of my Steam Library and several other games onto this drive and they are performing much better than they were previously on my 7200RPM Hard Drive. I actually removed those drives altogether at this point so I don’t have the extra noise they generate and save some power. Now my games are loading in a fraction of the time that they did before, and even in game performance is higher as new maps and areas load SO MUCH quicker than they did on my old drive. The file transfers on this drive are also insane! I moved some backups I had from a flash drive onto this SSD and the files moved in seconds, before on my old drive these transfers took much much longer to complete. Overall if you are looking for an affordable way to speed up your PC and increase your gaming performance, and just get a better experience overall this drive is what you are looking for!

FAST READ SPEEDS, AMAZING BOOT-UP SPEEDS!

The improvement is very noticeable, i had a 500GB 3x3 NVME bootup drive and i upgraded to a Gen 4 1TB. The difference is amazing, the bootup load time for windows 10 is very very quick and make startup up very effortless. The load times for my video edit projects using adobe premier show the biggest improvement, loading the project is a breeze now. The load time before took minutes and it would sometimes result in the program freezing up. The speeds and performance i have achieved are also due to having a compatible gen 4 motherboard that will take advantage of this memory. I would also have liked to see a built in heatsink but that can be easily added on for a better performance. The installation is also very painless, just make sure to take the precautions against static charge and be careful when inserting the memory when securing the end with the screw, remember to use the spacer that came with the motherboard so you don't stress the memory. Overall very fast improvement and easy install. A+

Great For Gaming

I recently got a new gaming pc that came with a 512Gb PCIe Gen 3 x4 NVMe Solid state drive installed. I knew this would be inadequate storage so I wanted to upgrade to a larger drive. I also wanted to upgrade to a faster drive when I discovered that my motherboard actually supported a PCIe Gen 4 NVMe. I’ve used Western Digital hard drives for nearly 20 years so I was eager to try the the WD Black SN770 NVMe SSD for this upgrade. Spec wise WD promises 5150MB/sec read speeds and up to 4900MB/sec write speeds. The SN770 is also backward compatible with PCIe Gen 3.
In the box you find the SN770 and some paperwork. I do wish these NVMe drives came with the post screw because you will need one if this is for a secondary NVMe slot. Since I was upgrading my existing drive I opted to just clone my existing drive to the SN770. So I popped the SN770 in my secondary slot temporarily for the cloning process. Western Digital has a free version of Acronis True Image cloning software available at their website which makes this process easy. The most difficult part of the installation process is fumbling with the tiny post screw. I’ve learned that a magnetic screwdriver designed for these screws helps considerably.
Since my secondary slot is PCIe Gen 3 I could benchmark the SN770 in PCIe3 and I got 2680 read and 2460 write speeds. I then moved the SN770 to my PCIe Gen 4 slot. Here I got twice the speed at 5224 read and 4968 write speeds. Fantastic. I was thrilled. Immediately I the speed increase was noticeable with faster boot times and my games loaded far faster than with my PCIe3 drive.
Make sure to get the WD SSD Dashboard software from the WD site. Here you can monitor drive capacity and performance. You can also view drive temperature and drive life remaining. You can also use the dashboard to check for firmware updates and do diagnostic tests. I particularly was interested in the game mode which disables low power mode for the ssd which should reduce latency for gaming while activated. Gameplay just felt perkier with this SN770. That’s what it’s all about. I was pleased. I would recommend.

It's like getting a whole new computer

A few weeks ago, the SSD in my PC went belly up. Luckily I had all my work backed up on another drive but that drive wasn't bootable. I needed a new drive to use as my startup drive. The old one was about 4-5 years old and although it was still faster than a spinning hard drive, it wasn't anywhere as fast as this Western Digital SN770 M.2 SSD. Taking apart the old computer wasn't fun as it sits under my desk and has 8 cables connecting my external drives, Ethernet and power cable coming out the back of it but I disconnected them all and placed the tower on my table.
Removing the old SSD and replacing it with this new one was as simple as anything. Then connecting the computer back with the cables while crawling on the floor was a bit of a chore but I got it done. Then came the formatting and the installing of Windows 10 (the PC is too old to handle Windows 11). It took a fraction of the time I thought it would since the write speed of this drive was much faster than the old one. When I got it up and running, I tested the speed by converting a batch of RAW photos to TIFFS and it whipped through them in nothing flat. I then ran some 3D modeling programs and the objects rendered in a very short time.
If you are still running an old SSD, do yourself a favor and upgrade to this new SSD. If you are still running an old hard drive in your PC (or Mac Pro Tower) you can get a PCIe adapter board for very little money and your computer will be so much faster, you'll think you bought a new PC.
