Customers frequently mention the ample storage capacity and excellent performance of the BLACK SN850 2TB Internal Gaming SSD PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe. Many also praise its ease of installation and fast load times, leading to an overall positive user experience. However, some users point out the need to purchase a heatsink separately, citing concerns about heat generation. The relatively high price point is another factor mentioned by some customers.

I have been using Western Digital drives for 20 years. I have never had any issues with them; HDDs or SDDs.
I currently have a Gigabyte X570 xtreme motherboard with the PCIe 4.0 protocol on it. I have one of the Gigabyte PCIe 4.0 2TB SSDs as my boot drive, a Western Digital Blue 2TB SATA M.2 drive, and now this WD Black drive all plugged into my board.
Transferring to and from this drive to the other 4.o drive from Gigabyte has been AMAZING. I am getting almost 5gb a second transfer speed consistently between the two drives. Faster speeds are something I need as I do a lot with large video files for editing.
So far, so good with this drive. No complaints. I plan on putting this drive through quite the tests. One task I have already started doing is large files from analog tape captures. The captures are in AVI format with 1gig a space per minuet of video. I can capture these files on this drive while simultaneously editing/rendering other videos to it, and recording WAV files from an audio production DAW. No dropped frames on the captures, no issues with the audio files!
The Western Digital SSD dashboard software makes it easy for me to maintain WD SSD drives I have installed, as well as the WD HDDs I have installed (5 of those). It helps keep tabs on all the drives.

Purchased for my PS5, works great, no overheating issues when paired with a heatsink. 2tb is more than enough for most people. I would say pick up a 2tb and you won't need another one ever again. Great performance, i had a 1tb SN850 but needed another TB so i upgraded to the 2tb. Highly recommend it for PS5 users.

Bought it for the PS5. This is the only 2TB option from a major brand so far that is expected to be compatible with the console, until Samsung’s 980 Pro offers the same capacity. The price is the only downside so far. If you plan to use on PC, then you can buy a SN750/970 Evo Plus for half the price and still get virtually the same performance.

Been waiting a long time to get this and finally got it! It’s very fast, and I got it just for extra storage on the PS5. It was a SUPER easy install, and if you need help installing it or removing the PS5 side plates, you could watch a simple YouTube video just as I did. I paired this SSD with the Sabrent Heatsink and I couldn’t be happier.

I've been running the WD Black SN850 2TB since the beta phase of for the PlayStation 5. I haven't had any issues and with a 2TB at hand there is a lot of space for PS4/PS5 games.
I currently have about 48 games downloaded to my SN850 and I still have about another TB to go before I am out of space. Some general testing online showed that the SN850 is really great with PS4 games in terms of load speeds and is average to above average when compared to competitor's drives with PS5 games. Overall I say this is the NVMe to get and you can chose whatever heatsink is best for you while saving money.

Working amazing with the PS5. Write speeds are around 6800. Had to use an MC1 Be Quiet! heat sink but I love it
Definitely recommend. Especially for the price I got it for.

Not good for PS5 overheats right away and makes your PS5 unusable. I thought it was my PS5 but went and got the Samsung 980 pro since then I haven't had any problems.

I ran out of space on my gaming drive, so I needed additional storage. I was dreading moving stuff over or having to mess with Steam or other launchers to make sure the games started correctly, but I was able to avoid the hassle with a second drive of bigger capacity.
It was so easy to install and setup. I pooled both drives to have a single volume and seamlessly continue gaming. The drive is very fast and reliable. I haven't had any issues with any of my games: no file corruption and launching any game is super fast.

I purchased the Western Digital SSD in the hopes of 7000 mb/sec. sequential read but was unable to use it to it's full potential because my Alienware motherboard only supports Generation 3 NVMe drives. I can't say how well it would perform as Generation 4, but I can say that when I benchmarked it, gets speeds around 3200 mb/sec sequential read and 3000 mb/sec sequential write. It doesn't heat up and is faster than the Micron 2300 1 tb NVMe drive that it replaced. It is a little bit faster than the Samsung 2 tb drive I have in my other computer. I have enough faith in Western Digital to say that I believe it can do much more at generation 4 but it still works very well at generation 3. So if your looking for a top of the line lightning fast SSD, this is what you want to buy. Along with my AMD 3900x, Nvidia RTX 3090, 40 gb DDR 4 3200mhz this drive made me happy enough to not return it for a cheaper generation 3 drive. If you have generation 4 capabilities I highly recommend this drive, if on the other hand you only have generation 3, this drive also works very well when it runs at that specification and I would recommend it for any gamer who needs a great SSD. You can download a WD app that runs in the background that allows you to set your NVMe drive to "gaming mode" and monitor the temperature, change different settings, etc... It is also very easy to install. If you have a mini screwdriver and know how to open your PC up and install it, it is very simple to take out the old one and replace it with the new drive.

Buy the one without heat sink

Well, I’d like to say this was not my first choice, because it was $10 more expensive than the Crucial P5 I ordered from Amazon. Unfortunately, after four days, with a so called one-day deliver, I still didn’t get the Crucial P5. So I went to my local Best Buy, and got this one instead.
The SSD itself is compact in size, and will fit in the PS5 expansion slot without any issue.
The PS5 indicates the speed is 5,800 MB/s, which exceeds the PS5 storage expansion requirements, so the job is done.
When it comes to the selection for SSD with or without heat sink, I did a bit of research, not too many, and the one with heat sink is $20 more expensive, which means $21.5 more expensive after sales tax, while you can get a heat sink for $7 even less which will work fine with the PS5, so I for sure chose the one without heat sink, because there’s really no magic between different brands of heat sink. Always be aluminum or copper or mixed alloys, with the dimensions cut to the size fit into the slots. Well, my point is, $7 heat sink or $20 heat sink really didn’t make too much difference in this particular case.

I bought this for the ps5 specifically since i was able to participate in the beta. I originally had the 1tb installed but moved to the 2tb because i know I'll need the extra space. THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT!!!! FASTER THAN THE SABRENT AND THE SAMSUNG! Easy to install and the read speed although faster than the stock ssd is slower than the 1tb. The 2tb read speed registered for me at 6154 mb/second.

Decent Speeds. However, after the 24 month Geek Squad warranty. It died on me 3 months later and I'm having to replace it. Overall it has been a great drive to use as my boot and install my OS on. The games are installed to my mechanical HDD.

Best Gen4 NVMe out there

Does what it's supposed to do... Super fast Gen4 NVMe and the WD Software makes it "game mode" which basically never lets the drive go to sleep (always in P0 power state). Cooling isn't an issue for me so the drive never gets over 49c anyway.
As for value that's always debatable, but for a 2Tb Gen3 with Samsung or WD you're still looking at $230 or so. I'd just pay the $100 difference and get this so you're set for a while.

Incredible way to storage more for gaming. I bought this for my ps5 and had no issues. It's loading games up faster if not the same as my ps5 storage and future proofs you. If you're hesitating and see this on sale, don't worry and buy it. I would buy a separate heatsink since they all do the same thing. Don't spend the extra money for the one that comes with a heatsink. Just get a basic one from amazon

Bought this for my Ps5. It performs as I hoped. The speed exceed most other drives and it was the top recommended unit for the ps5. You can’t go wrong with it. I bought a separate heat sink on Amazon as well for it and it’s been great with it. Not cheap,
but nothing really good ever is right.

Switched from an HDD to this SSD and it drastically made EVERYTHING so much faster. I didn't ever get the hype around SSDs before, but switching to this one definitely changed my view on them. Definitely keep your HDD for storage, but use this SSD to reduce boot times and speed EVERYTHING in your computer up! Just make sure it's compatible with your motherboard before you buy!

It works well with the PS5 and is a great value for the storage. IT DOESN'T COME WITH A HEATSINK. Keep this in mind. Personally, the speed is terrific and if you can find the Sabrent Heatsink and utilize these two you're looking at a very little need to upgrade you're internal SSD in the ps5, ever. (Also keep in mind that I purchased the 2tb edition) The Sabrent SSD is the only other contender for the ps5, since read and write speeds only really matter in specific scenarios. I suggest watching videos on this topic to determine which size and what speeds best suit you.
