Additional Solid State Drive storage for your PS5
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been doing the game shuffle on my PlayStation 5 for awhile now, not having really enough storage space for multiple games. Sony provides a M.2 PCIe slot internal within the PlayStation 5 to be able to add additional storage to your gaming console. Western Digital has several different versions of SSD drives and capacities, I chose the 1TB model, but they have versions up to 4TB. This years model is officially licensed for the PS5 and has the PlayStation logo stamped on it. Performance wise it delivers fast speeds and with that comes some heat, which they address with a pretty beefy heat sink to dissipate some of this heat. I took the temperature of the SSD drive after some gaming and the temperature was 165 degrees. As for installation it is pretty simple to install in your PS5 and once installed the PlayStation automatically formats it. Now most SSDs can be used in multiple types of devices including Desktops, Laptops and external enclosures, with the heat sink the last two installations types may be a bit difficult, however for the advertised use in a PS5 it fits perfect. Pros: - high performance - heat sink to help cool the drive - easy to install in a PS5 - more game storage ! Cons: - may not fit in some laptops or external enclosures due to heat sync

Solid SSD for the PS5.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The WD Black SN850P NVMe SSD for Playstation 5 does exactly what you need it to do - add fast, reliable storage to your PS5 at a price that won’t break the bank. The performance was more than adequate, to where I could feel no difference between this drive and the internal storage of the console. Installation was simple, as was setup. Probably the only disappointment is that the stylizing of the heatsink is hidden in the console, but it needs to be so it can run cool. Installing this is very straightforward pop off the side cover of your console, remove the SSD expansion cover with a screwdriver, and install the drive. Reverse the process to complete the installation. This would be a good chance to clean the cooling fan, too. Once powered on, the console will set up the drive for use. You can then move games to and from the SSD. The only real drawback to the SSD is the idea of installing one can be a little scary for anyone who has never installed a computer component. However, I’m here to tell you that if you can use a screwdriver and put a SD card into a phone, camera, or console, then you can install this. So in closing, the WD SN850P is worth it if you need an upgrade.

Best Value Upgrade Your PS5 Can Get
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In short, if you could get a PS5 you found that its built in hard drive was nowhere NEAR large enough to handle much gaming. There were really only two options: an external hard drive (which wouldn’t run PS5 games, only PS4 and backward) or install an M.2 SSD as a second internal hard drive. This required researching specs of various M.2 drives to ensure it would be fast enough to work in the PS5 and also looking into how to add a heatsink as most didn’t include that and it WOULD require heatsinks to not melt down inside the hardest to find gaming console since the Nintendo Wii fiasco of the early 2000s. All that to say that Western Digital cracked the code for expanding your PS5 without breaking the bank or having to put much thought into anything. Their WD_Black are well regarded in the video game fandom, they’re good long lasting drives without costing a fortune. In fact, the external drive I’d been using for my PS4 games was another WD_Black Playstation drive and it’s been great for the past couple years I’ve had my PS5, so I can personally verify they do good work! The SN850P is no exception so far. It's nearly twice the capacity of the factory hard drive (of the 1tb capacity Sony installed, only about 670gb is available out of the box due to system files) and it has the heat sink built in so all you need to do is install it. Installation is easier than you’d think, removing the plastic “wing” of the PS5, undoing a couple screws, and putting in the WD_Black drive before reversing to put it back together. For the past week I’ve had it the speeds are on par with the default factory drive, and while it could change as it gets older it’s plenty fast enough even if it slowed a bit. Also, longevity isn’t something I can speak to but as before I’ve had Western Digital drives before and my most recent external Playstation drive hasn’t given me any concerns for years, I have no reason to doubt this won’t perform admirably as well. The price on this is right and the name indicates quality, there’s a lot of options on the market but I don’t think you could do much better (and you can do much worse!) if you pop a WD_Black SSD into your console. I really don’t think you’d be disappointed.

Official Licensed SSD for the PS5
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Searching for an SSD that is compatible with the PS5 can be a daunting task. You must ensure that the SSD meets the requirements. The plus side to this is that it is a lot cheaper to upgrade the storage compared to Xbox Series consoles since it’s using widely available computer parts. In order to avoid any possible headaches and travel back to the store it’s better to go with a Sony-licensed SSD. It will also save you the hassle of having to find a heatsink. Since the heatsink is already attached to the SSD installing the SSD should only take a few minutes. The only part I struggle with was removing the top cover of the PS5 in order to gain access to the SSD bay that is secured by a screw. Once you remove that screw you will find another screw that is needed to keep the SSD in place. All you have to do is remove the screw and insert the SSD with the exposed gold pins towards the bottom opening. Once you have the SDD securely inserted, use the screw to secure it down. After that re-attached the SSD tray and secure it down with the screw. After you have everything back together the PS5 will the SSD and let you know that it needs to be formatted. I also recommend that you go to YouTube to view the Sony video walkthrough of installing an SSD. Overall going with the licensed Sony option can cost a little bit more but it’s well worth it since you know that it will be fully compatible with the PS5. For peace of mind and not having to deal with the hassle of returning back to the store, I highly recommend the WD Black for your PS5 storage needs.

Easy Upgrade to the PlayStation!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall, I would describe the performance of the WD Black SN850P as an excellent addition. it is great to immediately add the much needed extra storage as well as get consistent throughput in speed that you may not quite experience with an external drive option. First, it is very easy to install. You have to carefully remove the cover to expose the drive bay but once you have that off, using a phillips head screwdriver to pop open the drive bay is very easy. Insert the drive into that slot and secure it with the screw inside the bay. Close everything back up as it was and reconnect all cables before powering on. Once installed, the system will prompt you to format the drive which is self explanatory and goes quickly. After that is completed, you’ll see a screen about throughput and be ready to go. The additional storage space is most welcome as the system was nearly out anyway. It’s frustrating to have to delete applications and game save data to make it possible to play new games. The drive won’t solve all problems but it has at least allowed me to keep everything I’ve downloaded to date and keep playing. I have to be better about organizing and determining what I need to keep or not. Overall I would highly recommend this additional hard drive for anybody who wants to stop deleting applications and keeping a lot of things installed at one time. The slightly enhanced performance also serves as a nice benefit to the extra storage space. Definitely recommend this Western Digital SSD for your PlayStation.

Works Great
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really want to upgrade the capacity of memory on my ps5 but have to admit that I'm not the most handy of a person so I was quite intimidated by the thought of opening up the very expensive ps5 and installing this memory stick. But a quick search online there are quite a few videos showing how to do it and it didn't look as difficult as I thought. All you have to do is lay the ps5 flat with the ps5 logo facing the table. Lift and pull the side wall to the bottom of the ps5 and it should come right off. There is an expansion slot that looks exactly like the wd memory stick, unscrew the cover and pop in the memory stick. Don't forget to undo the screw at the end of the expansion bay and screw it in right at the end of the wd memory stick, basically to keep it in place. Once you do that and put everything back, plug the ps5 in and turn on to format the memory stick. Once formatted you can then have to choose it as location to store all your content. I transferred all my games to the wd memory stick and was really surprised at how quickly the files transferred. Games pulled up quick and smoothly and I have yet to encounter a glitch. I did read that this particular wd black is the official ps5 memory stick and you can tell because it has the ps5 logo on it. This really did give me that extra confidence in it. I've never used any other type of external memory on my ps5 but couldn't imagine anything better. It was so easy to install and get running. Definitely a big recommend from me.

Be sure to look up how to install before attempt
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The only reason I ALMOST took a star off, and I don't do this often or without pause, was lack of instructions as if I knew how to disassemble my PS5 already. Although not difficult, installation requires minor disassembly of the PS5 case, a cover, and installation of the drive. I figured no instructions, no problem and I went at it cold. Not to pat my own back, but it wasn't difficult. I probably took a lot longer to do it just because I was being careful and making sure there weren't any hidden wires or screws. A #1 Phillips screwdriver was all I needed, but I was keeping careful track of what I took apart and how. Once you get to the final SSD cover, installation is a snap. I just tried to take my time. Once installed and the case is re-assembled, the drive is automatically recognized. The prompts from the PS5 are clear what to do to format the drive and get going. My PS5 was running smoothly and didn't seem to lag before the update, so I can't comment on an improvement there. The drive that came in the PS5 seemed quick already. The additional storage space helped though. In short, instructions would have helped and saved me time. There seem to be plenty of videos showing what to do, so I didn't take a star off for it. Otherwise, it's a worthwhile upgrade compared to the stock SSD.

Expand your storage easily!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My son is now old enough to play and understand how to play and download games on my PS5. He actually plays more than me. So I've spent months having to delete old games that I never finished in order for him to download games that are age based for him. It pains me every time I have to go in and remove an old game. Well now with the SN850P from WD, that isn't so much of an issue. These come in 1tb, 2tb and 4tb versions. The SSD is constructed with what feels to be some pretty heavy duty materials. The heatsink is made with the SN850P and helps keep your ps5 cool while playing intense games. Install was super easy, there's plenty of videos online. Just snap off the plate and unscrew the housing where the internal storage would go. Pop in the storage and spacer and reverse the process. Once installed you format the SSD and then you can choose what files to move over to the WD. You can also choose to download all your games and files to the WD instead of your internal storage. I feel like the SN850P is just as fast reading as internal storage, at least there weren't any noticeable differences by eye. I very much recommend this product. Choose the size that best fits how many games you play or how much you game.

Great for holding more games.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The WD_Black 1TB SN850P Internal SSD for PS5 is such a great addition for us to have for the playstation 5 because my children have tons of games and we are always having to take some off just to play new ones. Having the WD_Black 1TB SN850P Internal SSD for PS5 allows me to store a whole lot more games for them to play without having to take some off. It was easy to install and get setup. It did not take long to get it installed and working. The load times for my games were faster and i had no issues at all. It read all of my games faster and we were able to play games with no issues. The heatsink on this device keeps the drive running xool while playing. Overall, my family is thrilled to be able to store way more games onto the playstayion than we ever did before, we love how it didnt take long to set this up, it was easy and now our games load up faster. I wish we would have gotten this sooner because it has been a game saver for us from having to delete games from the drive just to play new ones.

Excellent Storage Addition to a PS5!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Finally, PlayStation made it easy to upgrade and add storage to your system without impact to your existing storage. There is also no compromise on data speeds! Install is simple for any gamer. While the SSD came with no directions (and it should) I simply went on YouTube and was able to perform the upgrade in little than 5-10 minutes. Start by powering down and unplugging your PS5. Open the PS5 cover/side which is the hardest part of the install which there is plenty of separate videos on. It's a pull up and out action. Find the hard drive open spot, remove the screw and metal spacer, move the space to the appropriate SSD size position, insert your SSD and lay on top of the washer (where screw hole is located on the SSD), insert and tighten the screw, and reinstall the PS5 lid. Turn on the PS5 go into your hardware memory settings and format your new drive (don't format your existing drive or you will cry). Then you're set! In the hardware memory settings you can select how the PS5 system chooses memory storage when downloading games, apps, etc. You can have it choose your new SSD over the built in storage or you can have it download to your built in storage first over your new SSD. Users preference. Adding this storage is not like an external storage ps5 device/hard drive/. No worries about having to plugging in a device through usb. No slow speeds due to a gaming running starting through usb. Simply just like adding an SSD to a computer. If you need more storage Western Digital offers this device in higher storage levels. Major plus! Sony recommends that you install an SSD with a heatsink and not all SSDs come with a heatsink and you would have to purchase this in addition to a hard drive. What's great is that the WD Black has a heatsink already built onto the SSD so no worries here! Plug and play!

WD - BLACK 1TB Internal SSD PCIe works great
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.WD - BLACK SN850P 1TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4 x4 with Heatsink works great in the Playstation 5. Got this last week and was so easy to install. Setup - Just follow the instructions for installing and watch a video to be confident. Inistallation was easy and quick - less than a minute. Startup the Playstation - it recognizes the drive, you choose to format the drive and then it is ready to go. Choose it as a storage for games and now you will have plenty of storage for your games on this playstation. Quality if the drive/stick is very durable and solid. I was impressed with how easy this whole process was to get this memory added so painlessly. I have done hard drive updates on laptops and desktop computers and always trying to make sure I don't lose screws or have extra when finished. You remove the cover by following a YouTube video for the Playstation, then remove the memory cover by removing the screw, then remove the screw and barrel that holds the memory stick in place after installing. Running games from the drive to your playstation is instant and pretty fast. Since it is tied directly to the motherboard on the Playstation there is no hesitancy at all. Highly recommend adding the additional space for your storage, I would recommend doing the 2TB drive instead of the 1TB if you have a choice. Definitely worth it.

Save all of your games to PS5! (Data caps solved!)
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really enjoyed having the ability to download extra games that I otherwise would have to delete and re-download taking up a ton of my time, not to mention putting me over my data cap for the month. Installation was a breeze, basically plug and play. I can't help but think why you wouldn't want to buy this Western Digital drive for your ps5 --especially if you're like me and are busy but like to keep a backlog of games ready to go. For those who wonder if they need the extra memory, I used to wonder if it was worth it to buy extra memory for games for my PS5 as well... and until recently, it wasn't a big issue - but now with Diablo 4, final fantasy 16, dead space remake, and a ton of PSVR2 games, I find myself often getting a message from my console that I'm out of free space, and I need to clear something out to download the latest and greatest games, while keeping some of my favorites. As games routinely creep above 100 gb, and a fixed storage size of about 850 gb or less, this is quickly becoming an issue. So this WD Hard Drive has eliminated the only downside of my PS5.

Great SSD for your PlayStation or PC.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The WD Black SN850P is an excellent Gen 4 SSD for use with your PlayStation or PC and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for an internal Gen 4 PCIe SSD. Installation is a breeze of course, just make sure that your PlayStation is updated to the latest software version just to prevent any issues. Luckily PlayStation uses standard sizes for PCIe SSD's so if you later decide to upgrade your PS storage you can still use this drive in your PC. Overall this is a really good product and if you're in the market for a storage upgrade this is a great choice. Just one thing to note, this appears to be essentially the same SSD as the SN850, it just happens to feature the PlayStation logo and supposedly can get up to 7,3000 MB/s versus the SN850's 7,000 MB/s. Not sure if this is a difference that you will actually notice or not but it's worth keeping in mind if you happen to find the SN850 for a better deal it may be worth going for that instead of the SN850P. The PS logo is nice, but since it ends up being internally mounted, you don't even see it after installing it.

Excellent Performance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With the rising size of games seemingly increasing with every release, additional storage is pretty much required at this point. This storage is an excellent way to extend the capabilities of your PS5. During my recent sessions with a number of games, the speed of this drive is at least as fast as the internal drive, and many times, it was actually quicker. Street Fighter 6 was noticeably quicker for loading after moving to this drive. While the internal drive included with the PS5 is no slouch, this drive can easily match it. In fact, it was outperforming it on my occasions. The only real down side to this drive has nothing to do with the drive itself. It's the process of installing it. Taking the cover and unscrewing the compartment on your PS5 is a little scary. I was a bit worried I would break the outer shell case of my PS5 while removing it as Sony suggested. Once removed, there is a screw to open the compartment the drive sits in, along with a screw and a spacer that keeps the drive aligned. You align the drive to the nearest slot/screw hole. Make sure to put the spacer back in! I almost forgot to put it in place as I was installing the drive. Sony has a good video explaining the whole process, but it still feels a bit more complicated than it should be. Again, all that being said, this drive is easily a worthy addition to the PS5, and the performance is superb. The drive is designed to make the process as simple as possible, and WD have done their part, including the heatsink and meeting all the requirements. Pros: Excellent speeds, well-designed Cons: Installation process for the PS5 is a bit involved (though this has nothing to do with the drive itself)

An extra 1 TB of gaming fun!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Hello friends, this is my review of the Western Digital 1 TB SSD with heat sink. I thought i would do a short review for folks who may not know how to install and use this SSD for the PS5. If you have a PS5 it's easy to open up and clean out dust or install a SSD. First off turn the unit off. Then unplug all wires and cables. With the top facing down you can remove the white bottom panel. This will expose a small metal cover with a number one phillips head screw. You need to remove this screw to access the slot for the Western Digital SSD. After inserting the SSD, There is a screw at the end of the opening with a standoff spacer. You will need to utilize the screw with the spacer to secure the SSD. Simply remove it from its location and carefully put the spacer under the end of the SSD and then use the screw to hold everything in place. All of these steps are needed to hold the SSD securely inside of the PS5. Mainly because when you put the cover on it will hang upside down inside the machine. Now simply reinstall your cables and start loading more games. I really like the Western Digital 1 TB SSD. It allows me to finish installing all my games, without having to erase anything off my built in hard drive. Keep in mind this is only a 1 TB card, it holds a lot, however if you have a need for even more storage, you might need to go with an external drive. The external drives can hold up to 10 TB easily, depending on what you purchase. I highly recommend this SSD if you have a PS5. 5 stars from me friends!

Easy install, no obvious issues
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Installing this SSD was pretty easy after I figured out how to open the SSD compartment. It was basically plug-and-play with only a Phillips screwdriver needed. After I installed it, on first boot it prompted me to format the thing, and after that it just worked. And that's honestly the highest praise I can give. Literally, the most annoying thing about this SSD was that the PS5 didn't quite seem to get the memo at first that it should install things to the SSD since the internal one was out of space, but eventually it seemed to figure it out and just install things to the new SSD. I have not had any further issues. The games install right, there's no issues with data corruption, they don't seem to run slower than normal regardless of whether it's a PS5 or PS4 game, and my system hasn't reported any errors. It's just an additional storage module, sitting quietly in the background and holding my games, without dangling from a cable like my expansion drives did on my PS4. The storage the PS5 comes with really isn't enough, so I really recommend grabbing one of these to add it. No weird errors, no troubleshooting, no risk of the thing coming unplugged while the system is in rest mode, and it gives you enough space to have more than five games installed at a time. I love it and I'd definitely recommend it.
