I figured this might be an SMR drive, even though WD lied for months about which drives were SMR. They finally released a list after I had this installed and running for a while, and of course this is on it. It's fine for a backup drive, which is my use for this one, because it doesn't have to be fast. Three stars because it's cheap and quiet, and does what I need.

I take of lot of home movies of our grand kids and my 1.5 TB Hard Drive filled up recently so I needed something a little bigger and reliable. I checked out hard drives and decided on this one. I installed it and copied all my movies and have room to spare. The hard drive is very quiet and pretty fast. I have only had it for a short time so I cannot comment or long term reliability but most WD hard drives last a long time.

thanks to a sale this was the best place around to get a drive this size. i've run WD drives for several years, usuallythe green. I store a lot of media for streaming and whatnot so this is just what i need. Time will tell how this holds up as i got 7 years out of my last set of drives

Installation and set up were easy. Nice, quiet drive. Bought the 3TB model but after realized my computer (Windows 7) can only recognize 2TB. Looking into workaround.

I've purchased about 10 of these over the last 3 years to backup my photography. They are relatively fast and pretty reliable. The price is also amazing!

Working great so far. Runs cool, very quiet, and lots of storage for the money. When you format this drive (in Windows 7 64-bit) you need to select GPT partitioning in order to access the full 3 TB as a single partition, otherwise you'll need to format it as two smaller partitions. With Window's standard MBR formatting, you can't access more than 2 TB per partition. Do a web search for more info! This drive is meant for storage, not as a boot drive. I would not recommend it for your primary drive but as a secondary storage drive it seems to work great!

Purchased for use in a Thermaltake BlacX hard drive dock for backups, connected to my laptop via eSATA. Easy to set up, has decent performance despite the 5400 RPM spindle speed. Runs very cool and quiet. It's a bit slow to spin up, but that's not really an issue. If you're looking for an economical hard drive for bulk data storage, you really can't go wrong with a WD Green.

I built a NAS and I have 4 of these in RAID and have had no issues with these discs. Note that you will need to modify the parking on these discs if you use them (Google search will tell you everything you need to know about this). I use these off a recommendation from a number of sources. However, I am still going to move forward with replacing these in the near future with WD Reds (for NAS) as they are actually built/configured for NAS systems.

Bought to go along with my SSD boot drive. With 3 TB, it has all the room I'll need for a while. For those who are savvy to such things, it's a Western Digital 'Green' Drive. Nothing to do with the environment, it means its for 'everyday' use. The drive spins at 5600RPM instead of the faster 7200RPM you'd want for a boot or gaming drive. Since I use an SSD fo that it wasn't a issue. Installation was easy, and WD makes software available in case you want to copy your existing drive over.

It's a hard drive. The setup process is as simple as any other internal hard drives. If you know how to do it, it's as simple a putting LEGOs together. If you don't, you might have a easier time playing with MegaBloks. It fits 3TB (minus about 50gb lost to the ethers, sacrificed to the gods of partition formatting). Decent for storing all your suspiciously large files.

Really great drive. I've had success with WD external drives before and when the boot sector on my current internal drive failed, I needed a replacement quickly from a brick and mortar store and not online. The drive has more than enough capacity for what I need. It installed easily and mounted into the case with no issue. I was able to install Windows 10 from a USB Boot and get it back up and running so I could recover the data from my original drive. I've definitely noticed a difference in performance between the old drive and this one, a symptom of the failure that I had simply attributed to it being an older, though upgraded, machine. Haven't had any BSODs or unexpected failures after over a month of use.

I bought this hard drive because I needed a bunch of storage in my home NAS. Since Seagate has had some quality issues lately, I decided to take a risk and get a Western Digital (which I used to dislike). My NAS does a SMART test nightly and this hard drive has been working really well. I've probably got it 30% full and it seems fast and quiet.

Hard drives are a pain to shop for. Because of the nature of mechanical drives and because of the volume of sales even the best drives are going to be absolutely littered with negative reviews complaining about premature failure, DOA, or other problems. This can be very discouraging if you are shopping for a new hard drive as you simply want something reliable but there are really only a few companies that even make them. Well, stop looking and obsessing and comparing. These drives are fine. WD has some of the lowest failure rates of the mainstream drive makers (and no, I don't just mean that outdated Backblaze study), and they have decent warranty service. Is it guaranteed your drive won't fail? No way. This is still a spinning piece of metal and it's still a freaking miracle these things even work to begin with. They're incredibly sensitive devices and they're being shipped and handled more than they ever have in history. Every 6 foot drop off a conveyor belt is another added chance you get a dud. It's just part of the beast. That's why we test. Before you put ANY data on the drive. Test it. Run dskchck or some other storage testing program and look for any bad sectors. Run a SMART test and look for any stats that are out of range of where they should be. If you see a problem, return the drive. You won't even have to roll the warranty dice, just take it back to the store and get a new one. The chances of you getting two failed drives are even lower than getting one (not that it's impossible, some people have been struck by lightning more than once). I have 3 of these drives now and so far they're all working along just fine. Now, I'm not running a data center off them or absolutely hammering them on a daily basis, they mostly just store movies and games, but I still haven't noticed any issues. They're quiet, they run cool with minimal cooling, and they hold my data just fine. Wish they came with a cable but I had some around.

This is a good drive. Got it a a good price. I have had good success with Western Digital drives and I expect I will with this also. A little noisy at times. What surprised me was that on large and small copies I was getting the same performance with this drive (around 120 mb a sec) that I got with a 3TB Western Digital green drive I also purchased. More capacity with the green drive and its quieter, so you might prefer it. The disadvantage of the green drive (vs the black) is the shorter warranty. Note both drives were running off of Sata III internal connections. Also note. WD has changed the names of the drives from black / green to something else I don't recall.

I purchased this 3GB HD for HD video storage and editing. Handles DNxHD and raw HD files over 300GB each with no problems so far. Liked the drive so much I bought a second one a few weeks later. Too early to know if the drives will hold up over the long term, but so far so good.

Great hard drive if you just need space to store data. It's not extremely fast, but Western Digital drives are always more reliable than other brands in my experience. Also, Best Buy had the best price on this drive at the time of purchase, so that's cool.
