    Everything fails ...

I have been working on Computers since the 8.4Lb 5 Megabyte Hard Drive stuck in the original IBM PC (8080) Yes, that was before the P1, 486, the 386, and the 286! Those were Western Digital Drives too (some of them). I just wanted to say that if you have a drive over 3 years old, get a new drive, ghost it or copy it over to a new drive, and if the data is important to you put the old drive into a drawer someplace for safety just in case the new drive fails. Typically the lifetime of a hard Drive follows this: (purely guesstimations... but ill bet i'm close enough!) DOA -out of the Box : very slim - less than .05% , but like the manufacturer says, they cant manage someone at Walmart or Bestbuy driving a forklift and dumping a box of drives onto the concrete floor from 12 feet. They just gather them up and stock them without a care. Its interesting to note that WD (or any other vendor) will usually be able to track that kind of loss because there will usually be more than 1 or 2 failures in a particular geographic area. 1 to 90 days: less than 1% . Some of the drives may contain dirt of other foreign material that the drive picks up in manufacturing. This isn't typical, but something can stick to a set of heads... and it makes it into the unit and wham... as soon as it flies off the head or head support mechanism the drive could be destined for replacement. Generally, if you make it past 90 days you will have a keeper. Until then always be prepared and expect a failure so that you aren't surprised. If you are good after 90 days you will last the life of the drive. 1- 3 years: In the early days i think WD and a few other manufactures played with the idea that if they sold drives with a 1 year warranty (to folks like Walmart who demanded $150.00 Laptops!), that they could sell them exactly what they wanted... a drive that would only be marginal at a 1 year life expectancy. As I recall they had a "B" or "BB" nomenclature in the model. I cant tell you how many of these drives came back in the 9 to 15 month time frame, but I have to tell you that I probably replaces hundreds of these drives in that time frame. Probably the most consistently projected failure rate of any Hard Drive ever manufactured and sold of any manufacturer! I'm definitely NOT saying that WD did anything wrong, they simply gave the Laptop and PC manufactures EXACTLY what they asked for, 1 year warranty drives! And that goes to show you that a company that can be that close to designing a drive for a particular purpose, and can meet or exceed that objective, that close to the specifications asked for, is phenomenal as far as their ability to manufacture for any specified guideline. That shoes control of specification and maintenance of production to extremely tight standards. They get an A+ for that that program. Most drives will last 3 years without abuse. Ive pulled WD drives out of PC's from burned businesses, water damaged Laptops, Old equipment that had been in a basement that the mise have used for nesting... and these things are ridiculous... they start up! they run as long as the boards are in good shape and they aren't submerged. If you get 1 year you'll get 3. 3+ Years: At this age you should plan that any drive you have could fail... at any time... BE PREPARED! I always hear this: " But it was working perfect yesterday!" Yes... and that's the way it goes. Everything works until it doesn't... WD... Great Products for many many years.

NOT the drive the specs show

I just found the 4TB version in store (was going for the 2TB but they were out). If what was in the box for the 4TB is anything like the other drives, then it is NOT the same drive the spec's show. The drive found in the box was the WD40EZAZ (not the WD40EZRZ shown in the photos when you select the sold out 4000 MB selection) which is a SMR drive (256 cache) and not the CMR (64 cache) drive specified in the specs. If you want to know the difference google "SMR vs CMR Hard Drive". The bottom line is if you just want to store photos, documents, etc. on this drive, then it is a good deal. However, if you want to play games, record video/audio, or anything that requires long write times then this is NOT the drive for you. Go with the WB Black as those are still CMR drives (all sizes as of June 2021 except the 500 MB and 1TB). The serial number matched the outside of the box exactly (which is why they let me return it) but the model is not the WDBH2D0040HNC (which is the WD40EZRZ) listed on the outside of the box. Or that long model no longer means anything since it was the WD40EZAZ inside.
