WD blue DOES NOT work with it's own license of Acronis Data migration software. It was a huge waste of time. I switched back to Sandisk, which is also a WD product but obviously of better quality. DON'T BUY THIS VERSION OF SSD. Sandisk and Sandisk ultra cost the same and you get better results.

A lot of people will say an upgrade to your RAM, CPU, etc…is the easiest route to increased performance for a slowing computer. While in some cases that may be true, if you are still running a mechanical drive, a new SSD is the upgrade that will show the most dramatic and “real world” improvement.
That is what I found with this WD SSD. I popped it in an aging desktop and saw immediate results. I went with a fresh OS install, as I feel that is the best way for a clean start. Boot times were immediately ridiculously fast, applications loaded noticeably quicker and the whole system simply felt snappy. These are real world improvements you see and feel.
For most, that is what you are looking for and it should be more than good enough. Further, the drive comes with a MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) of 1.75 million hours as well as a 3-year warranty. There are a couple of comparable SSDs with similar performance and price with lower MTTFs but higher warranties, but I have never had any issue with any of my WD HDDs over the years. As a result, I am comfortable putting my data on their drives.
Ultimately, I really like this drive. It performs well, comes at an attractive price and is a great value. If you are still running an old mechanical drive, this is a great pick for a system upgrade. Further, if you are looking for a backup solution or some storage on the go, grab an enclosure and use it as an external. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

New life for an old laptop

I decided to try this drive to replace the 320GB hard drive in my wife's 6-year-old Acer Ultrabook. She was still using the laptop but I did hear a lot of complaints about how SLOW it was. The slow hard drive was one of the ways Acer cut costs on the Ultrabook, so I thought this would be a perfect test. The results were fantastic! It's like getting a brand new Ultrabook.
If you haven't swapped drives before, you'll need to buy an $8 external SATA enclosure so you can clone the existing drive to the new SSD. You'll also need some cloning software, like Acronis Software available for download from WD. I used EaseUS Todo Backup Free, and there are others available, too. You can also Google "How to Upgrade Your Laptop’s Hard Drive to an SSD" for a nice step-by-step set of instructions.
After cloning the drive (it took about 1.5 hours), taking the laptop apart, and replacing the drive, I booted up for the first time. It literally had Windows 10 booted in a matter of seconds. Opening Chrome or IE took seconds. Office apps loaded almost as quickly. My wife practically jumped up and down at how fast it was. It was definitely like getting a new laptop for less than $100.
The only downside to this drive that I can see is the 3-year warranty is a little shorter than some other similar drives on the market. But other than that, I definitely recommend this drive for breathing new life into an old laptop.

There's good news and bad news about the Western Digital Blue SSD.
The good news is that it's good basic fast SSD for not a lot of money and it will turn any computer or laptop that now runs on an ancient obsolete mechanical hard drive into something so fast, you will hardly believe it.
The bad news is that if you aren't comfortable tearing open your computer to swap out drives, searching out and downloading software to clone your old drive to your new superfast SSD, this job is probably way beyond your pay grade.
It's not hard but it is easy to get intimidated if you have never done it before.
But lets get back to the WD Blue first. Be aware there lots of SSD choices out there and some of them are a lot faster, on paper at least, than the WD Blue. For most people, that isn't going to matter a whole lot. The WD Blue is plenty fast enough, with 6 GB/sec transfer speeds, assuming you have the hardware in your PC or laptop to handle it.
Pretty much any computer made in past three or four years can handle an SSD. Windows 7 and 10 both are designed to work with the drives, which are pretty much plug and play once cloned. Ah, But what does that involve? First step: Go to the Western Digital Web site and search out the Acronis True Image software, which you can download for free. It is very easy to use. Dead simple.
Just make sure you don't have more than 500GB of data on your drive (including extra partitions) since that is the capacity of this drive. 400MB should actually be the max limit since SSDs need some dead space to function efficiently.
The next step is probably harder. If you have a laptop, you are going to need to buy an external case with USB connection. Slide the SSD into the case, plug in the USB, launch the software, pick the drive you want to copy. Pick the drive you want to clone. Clone. Once done (it can take 1-2 hours, depending on how much data is on your existing drive), you simply open your laptop, pull out the old drive, replace it with the SSD. Enjoy.
Some desktop PCs have internal connections that allow you add a second hard drive. If so, connect the SSD that way and then launch the software and clone, using the proper original and destination drives. Once done, remove the old hard drive, put the new SSD where it was and you should be good to go. You can also use the same technique as above using a USB connection to external case holding the SSD.
One bit of advice. Run checkdisk ( chkdsk/f) on your old mechanical hard drive before you start. This will eliminate any bad sectors, which might cause the cloning software to crash.
And don't forget to also download the free Western Digital SSD Dashboard software so you can make sure all is running properly once the new SSD is installed . The dashboard provides real time information of transfer speeds, drive temp and wear and tear on the drive. Yeah, they wear out just like mechanical ones do but most drives will probably last longer than your computer.
If any of this sounds too complicated, hand it off to the Geek Squad or a friend with similar talents.
In the end, you will not regret it. An SSD will make any PC or laptop faster than you ever imagined it could be. It is the best $100 you will ever spend on your computer.

This is the second one I had to buy. The first one failed after one year. To be exact, it was one week after the first year. Try to get the warranty enforced by WD is something else. They want information that unless you are a tech expert is next to impossible. Still do not have the replacement.

First off, this is a bare drive. You will not get software, rails, or cables with this item.
Now to the good stuff. This drive is fast. I trasferred 4gbs in 60 secs as a external drive and when it was installed the transfer rate did not vary very much. I used the website (WD) to download the Acronis software and drive firmware update (did not need it). After copying my C: drive to the new SSD , I was off and runing quicker than before. I came from a gaming system with a 256gb HDD and this was a breath of fresh air with the speed and size increase. All I can say is buy this drive and never doubt your purchase.
However, (yes there is always one) if you have a WD drive in your system already and used the Acronis software previously(older version), you will need to uninstall/reboot/and install the newer version to get the software to launch the disk copy portion. Other than that, it was very easy to set up and currently I am enjoying it all the time while gaming and doing some other drive intensive programs.

Transform Your Old Hardware

Let me start by saying that over the years I’ve built numerous computers and I’ve installed countless hard drives. While I’ve worked with many SSD drives from other manufacturers this is my first Western Digital SSD. My plan for this drive was a pretty typical application. I wanted to upgrade a two year old laptop to an SSD knowing that a solid state drive would breath new life into the laptop by speeding it up immensely.
To clone the drive I purchased a usb to SATA cable. These can be acquired inexpensively. They’re so cheap I think drive makers should include them with new drives. Including it would add next to nothing to the total cost. I was looking forward to seeing the speed increase so I proceeded with the drive installation. I’m glad I knew what I was doing because you won’t find any instructions in the box with this drive. There really should be for those less familiar with this process. I knew I needed cloning software to copy the existing drive so I headed to the Western Digital website and found the Acronis True Image WD edition software and downloaded it and installed it. I hooked the Western Digital SATA SSD to the laptop with the usb cable. I then went to disk management and initialized and partitioned it. I ran the software to begin cloning the drive and low and behold Acronis True Image WD edition wouldn’t run because it didn't detect a WD drive. What? I was baffled. This began several hours of messing with this issue while trying everything imaginable to correct the problem. I researched the issue to no avail and finally gave up and resorted to another software cloning solution which worked immediately and flawlessly. I then swapped the drives and quickly rebooted to a remarkably faster laptop. I suddenly had what seemed like a totally new machine. Boot times as expected were reduced substantially. Programs now responded instantly where previously with a regular hard they loaded sluggishly. What a transformation.
I was definitely disappointed that I experienced unexpected issues installing this drive with the Western Digital software but I was ultimately happy with the performance increase. This truly is a simple installation that anyone can perform to upgrade older hardware.
