I needed a high performance external drive for backing up and archiving files for the company I work for. While I know this drive is advertised as a "gaming drive", it's high throughput and overall high performance made it a perfect choice for my needs. This is the 4th "WD Black" drive I have purchased of different capacities (the first 3 were for personal use) and I am very happy with all of them. Cost a little more than others, but well worth the extra expense!

This device has made it possible for me to move over a lot of files off of my computer to make room for my games and other programs and files that I have. My system seems to be running a lot better! Thanks!

This product is excellent. Definitely worth the money. If you are buying for a Playstation 5 just be aware that you can only store the 5 games and then move them back to internal storage to play. The 4's can be stored and played from the drive.

    Great Large Capacity Hard Drive

I bought this hard drive to finally condense all of the data I've amassed on multiple drives in to one unit. The read and write speeds were pretty decent especially for a spin drive. It's nice that it's rated at 7200 rpms, as more often you see 5400 rpm drives at similar price points that perform slower. The extra USB charging ports in the back are a nice touch as well, adding more functionality. It also doesn't come with any bloatware or files that try to get you to sign up for all sorts of things. Once you plug it in, it's just a blank drive ready for whatever you want to put on it. It does make some clicking noises when under heavy load, but honestly I was pretty surprised how quiet it was during general use. Many of the drives I was transferring data from made all sorts of noises, but the WD black was pretty tame. The only thing that made me sad was the case. In the pictures it looks like it could be made of metal, where it is actually plastic. This wasn't a dealbreaker for me as the build quality is still great, but may be a bit misleading for some.

For PS4 games the speed compares favorably to the internal SSD, I loaded a Witcher 3 save in Novigrad which took 1:06 versus :53 on internal which is roughly only a 20% difference meaning that it’s read speed isn’t that far off from whatever the limit they’ve put in place when playing PS4 games on PS5. Given that you can now archive PS5 games to external storage having a huge fast drive like this is a good investment.
