The drives seem to do what they are supposed to as regards backing up my data, however, they run extremely hot and I have to use external fans to cool them down. Temperatures without the fans run at a minimum 50 degrees Celsius and on occasion have reached the mid to upper 50s, which is a danger zone for drives. I have software that I use to monitor this, but it should not be that I need these extra fans to keep the drives cool.

As a hardcore gamer with an ever-expanding library, storage space is always at a premium. Enter the WD Game Drive 8TB external hard drive – a veritable treasure chest for digital game collections.
First off, let's talk capacity. 8TB is massive. We're talking about potentially hundreds of games at your fingertips, ready to play at a moment's notice. No more agonizing over which games to delete to make room for new ones. With this drive, you can keep your entire library installed and ready to go.
The drive's performance is solid. While it's not as lightning-fast as an SSD, the transfer speeds are more than adequate for gaming purposes. I've experienced minimal load time increases compared to the internal drive, which is impressive for an external HDD.
Compatibility is a strong point. I've used this drive with my PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X without any issues. It's truly plug-and-play – just connect it, format if necessary, and you're good to go. The ability to easily switch between consoles is a huge plus if you're a multi-platform gamer.
Build quality is robust. The drive feels sturdy and well-made, inspiring confidence in its durability. It's also surprisingly compact for its capacity, making it easy to tuck away near your console setup.
One minor gripe is the lack of an included USB-C cable. Given that many modern devices use USB-C, it would have been nice to have this option out of the box. However, this is a small inconvenience in the grand scheme of things.
The price point, while not cheap, offers excellent value when you consider the cost per terabyte. It's a worthwhile investment for serious gamers who want to keep their entire library accessible.
In conclusion, the WD Game Drive 8TB is a game-changer for storage-strapped gamers. It offers vast capacity, good performance, and wide compatibility in a well-built package. While not perfect (what is?), it's an excellent solution for expanding your gaming horizons without constantly juggling installations. Whether you're a completionist who needs every game installed or just someone who hates deleting old favorites, this drive is a worthy addition to your gaming setup.

260 peak writes/transfers avg 255mb/s
Opposed to the self powered 120-130mb/s smaller 2.5" game drives.
-Pros
+Price(on sale) 180$
+Speed 200+mb/s 255mb/s avg IMO one of the faster large capacity drives, i hear its a 7200rpm 8tb WD gold drive, with no sata capability as far as teardown.
+Cooling option Some drives lack a cooling option which IMO insures the overall longevity of the drive, of which i purchased with a warranty
+Reputable brand of which i already have a warranty account established with my 2011 sandy pc's 2x 1tb black drives.....my current laptops wd m.2 blue drive. And eventual drive purchases. I list this as a pro it could be negligible depending on what you value as a consumer
+so for 20$ i have a bestbuy protection plan and WD brands warranty that comes with purchase.
-Cons
+As some reviews have stated it does make noise at times....i even feel the vibration on my desk/glass surface.....im afraid to put it on a mouse pad surface to reduce vibration bc i assume the reads/writes are going to be better/life wise if its on a hard surface vs a soft one idk if the internals can be affected if its on a surface that provides dampening....since SERVERS PC etc.....all have them hard mounted for example. IJS for overall lifetime of the drive in regards to ownership........the majority of noise complainers have it sideways mounted not vertically with mount...IMO i use mine right no cons here....

I had an external SSHD with another major brand, it was 4TB and cost me about $130, that drive lasted for almost 13 months and then one day, became nonexistent to any device that I plugged it into and was told by the manufacturer, that my warranty was out, so I had lost access to almost 3TB of downloaded games.
I find the beauty and manage to snag it on sale for a little over $150. Twice the storage for about $30 more and comes with a 3 year warranty! I just recently got my content re-installed on the drive and it works like a champ.
I have already noticed an improvement with game load times (not extreme but much better) and this drive honestly does not make too much noise for 7200rpm. I keep the drive next to the console and about 8-10 feet away from where I sit. The only time I have heard the drive, is if I have my soundbar on low or its the only thing making noise.
Overall, easily 5/5 for the price I paid and the quality that I am getting.

We love this drive on the Playstation 5. It was a great choice so glad I didn't worry about speed and get the 2TB Solid State for more money. No play lag issues so far and not noisy by my standards as other reviewers have mentioned.

Exactly what I needed to store lots of stuff quickly. So nice I can still walk in a place and buy items like this! WD black is reputable and so far this item has worked as designed. You do have to have a separate wall wart to power this which is a little annoying but no complaints on the speed.

I initially bought this drive because I thought it was a Western Digital Black drive which have a good reputation for lasting a long time. My WDBlack 600GB still works after 8yrs of service (2012).
This drive is an Ultrastar DC320 Data Center drive: MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) is 2million hrs. AFR (Annual Failure Rate) is 0.44%. Search the Western Digital website for specs.
Speed: any mechanical hdd will be outperformed by any SSD ever. The purpose of this drive is massive storage! I use it for my ps4pro and have about 50 games around 8-80GB each, and I still have more than 6TB of space! I plan on buying another one for my PC for cloud storage.
Cost: 0.03 cents per GB, that's minus the extra $$ for an external HDD case if you were buying the HDD separately perhaps.
Noise: WD Black HDDs are known to be worryingly noisy. This Ultrastar HDD is not. You might notice some movement if you're on a quiet PC (nothing compared to WD Black HDDs though), but if you're gaming it's pretty much silent.

Best drive for Series X

This drive works GREAT for my Series X... It's a enterprise level drive, so it's designed to constantly be running if people were wondering... It can be a loud drive, but it's just part of the deal... This is a particularly great drive for transferring back and forth games to the internal Series X drive to make room because this kind of drive is designed to be able that kind of wear and tear... Best purchase I could have done fir moving all of my 350+ Xbox One games to my new system... Highly recommend...
Reminder that only the 8tb and up drives are the enterprise category drives... The 5tb and lower are WAY slower drives...

Lots of backup storage for the money

I’m using this hard drive as a backup storage for my iMac because it seemed like a lot of bang for the buck storage-wise. It’s plenty fast for backups, and it has enough space to last me for the foreseeable future. Setup was easy - I just formatted it for my iMac and plugged it in. There is a low thumping sound when it’s working but it’s not annoying - it’s to be expected. It’s a great brand that I trust, and I expect that it will last way longer than I’ll need it to.

WD_BLACK D10 8TB External Game Drive

The WD_BLACK D10 8TB seems to be the best external game drive you can purchase for the PS5 right now. I'll get right down to to the two main reasons why. First, as of the this review, Sony has an 8 TB limit on the maximum storage size its OS will support for a single drive, regardless if it is an HDD or SSD, internal or external. Sony may increase this cap in a future update, but for now at least, an 8 TB drive is your limit.
Second, the WD_BLACK D10 8TB External Drive by Western Digital spins at 7200 RPM. This is 30% faster than the majority of external storage out there on the market for your console in that most HDDs spin at 5400 RPM. 7200 RPM equates to faster read and write times. Therefore, even if you are utilizing a 10GB/s bandwidth USB port, you are still limited to how fast the drive's header can physically write and read data onto the spinning platter. I am getting 200 MB/s writes and 250 MB/s reads with the D10. This is about as fast as you can expect outside of using an SSD for external storage. And sure, though SSDs are preferable due to being much faster, they are still not cost effective for mass storage. By comparison, an 8TB SSD is expensive and really just not a practical cost effective manner for external storage on a console unless money doesn't stand in your way.
So I've listed the notable pros. Are there any cons? The 3.5" drive requires more voltage than USB can provide alone, so it comes with an external power adapter. You will need access to a power outlet. Another thing to mention is the case includes a cooling fan to vent heat as the 3.5" 7200 RPM drive runs hotter and needs airflow. Though pretty quiet, you can see still hear it running. That being said, it is drowned out by the sound of the PS5 cooling anyway. So this shouldn't be an issue.
All on all, an excellent game drive at a good value for fast transfers and mass storage. PS4 games can be played off the drive and perform to their optimal bandwidth limit. Fast transfer speeds allow you to store your PS5 games conveniently to free up needed space on the console's internal storage without having to delete.

This D10, is quick even for not being a SSD. It keeps up with the speeds and is a great external HD and with 8TB you can store all your PS4 games on it and the PS5 recognizes the HD and plays games directly from it and downloads directly to it. You can store PS5 games on it, but have to transfer back to the PS5 SSD in order to play them.

8TB WD_BLACK D10 worked for PlayStation 4 Pro

The WD_BLACK D10 Game Drive (WDBA3P0080HBK) hard drive seems to be working well as extended storage for PS4 Pro.
Notes:
* Make sure you have room at your power outlet, because the hard drive uses AC power.
* The hard drive has a cooling fan.
* The light on the hard drive lights up white while running with the PS4, and stays lit white while the PS4 is in rest mode after briefly turning off while entering rest mode. It turns off when the PS4 is off.
* The hard drive hooks up to the PS4 by USB cable
* At the time of the April 16, 2020 PS4 system software version 7.50 - the hard drive once correctly physically connected can be set up to use with the PS4 by navigating to Settings/Devices/USB Storage Devices/WD_Black D10 Game Drive/Format as Extended Storage. Additionally the hard drive can be setup as the "Application Install Location" by navigating to Settings/Storage then open the options menu and choose extended storage as the application install location to have future applications installed to the extended storage.
* At the time of the April 16, 2020 PS4 system software version 7.50 the hard drive will act as storage for "Applications" only when used as extended storage exclusively. Storage for Capture Gallery, Saved Data, and Themes will remain in the PS4 system storage.
* Applications can be moved from the PS4 system storage to the extended storage hard drive. As this is done the moving of the application will take priority and can not be done in the background. During testing it took about 20 seconds to move a 1.19 GB application to the extended storage hard drive using a standard PS4 Pro. In further testing it took about 8 minutes to move a 30.12 GB application.

I’m a photographer (not a tech wiz by any stretch of the imagination), and I purchased this 8TB drive to clear room off my ssd drives which I use for editing. I’m not able to invest in a NAS system at the moment, so this is my most immediate solution. File transfers are plenty fast enough, and I’ve had no issues converting RAW files to DNGs in lightroom. Great “cold storage” solution, and I’m sure I will purchase another one when the need arises.

Large Voulume very fast hard drive - plug and play no problems - easy networking to back up 4 home computers with plenty of room to spare - suprising how fast transfering numerous gigabytes of data was.
