The WD_BLACK D10 8TB seems to be the best external game drive you can purchase for the PS5 right now. I'll get right down to to the two main reasons why. First, as of the this review, Sony has an 8 TB limit on the maximum storage size its OS will support for a single drive, regardless if it is an HDD or SSD, internal or external. Sony may increase this cap in a future update, but for now at least, an 8 TB drive is your limit.
Second, the WD_BLACK D10 8TB External Drive by Western Digital spins at 7200 RPM. This is 30% faster than the majority of external storage out there on the market for your console in that most HDDs spin at 5400 RPM. 7200 RPM equates to faster read and write times. Therefore, even if you are utilizing a 10GB/s bandwidth USB port, you are still limited to how fast the drive's header can physically write and read data onto the spinning platter. I am getting 200 MB/s writes and 250 MB/s reads with the D10. This is about as fast as you can expect outside of using an SSD for external storage. And sure, though SSDs are preferable due to being much faster, they are still not cost effective for mass storage. By comparison, an 8TB SSD is expensive and really just not a practical cost effective manner for external storage on a console unless money doesn't stand in your way.
So I've listed the notable pros. Are there any cons? The 3.5" drive requires more voltage than USB can provide alone, so it comes with an external power adapter. You will need access to a power outlet. Another thing to mention is the case includes a cooling fan to vent heat as the 3.5" 7200 RPM drive runs hotter and needs airflow. Though pretty quiet, you can see still hear it running. That being said, it is drowned out by the sound of the PS5 cooling anyway. So this shouldn't be an issue.
All on all, an excellent game drive at a good value for fast transfers and mass storage. PS4 games can be played off the drive and perform to their optimal bandwidth limit. Fast transfer speeds allow you to store your PS5 games conveniently to free up needed space on the console's internal storage without having to delete.

Exactly what I needed to store lots of stuff quickly. So nice I can still walk in a place and buy items like this! WD black is reputable and so far this item has worked as designed. You do have to have a separate wall wart to power this which is a little annoying but no complaints on the speed.

This D10, is quick even for not being a SSD. It keeps up with the speeds and is a great external HD and with 8TB you can store all your PS4 games on it and the PS5 recognizes the HD and plays games directly from it and downloads directly to it. You can store PS5 games on it, but have to transfer back to the PS5 SSD in order to play them.

The WD_BLACK D10 Game Drive (WDBA3P0080HBK) hard drive seems to be working well as extended storage for PS4 Pro.
Notes:
* Make sure you have room at your power outlet, because the hard drive uses AC power.
* The hard drive has a cooling fan.
* The light on the hard drive lights up white while running with the PS4, and stays lit white while the PS4 is in rest mode after briefly turning off while entering rest mode. It turns off when the PS4 is off.
* The hard drive hooks up to the PS4 by USB cable
* At the time of the April 16, 2020 PS4 system software version 7.50 - the hard drive once correctly physically connected can be set up to use with the PS4 by navigating to Settings/Devices/USB Storage Devices/WD_Black D10 Game Drive/Format as Extended Storage. Additionally the hard drive can be setup as the "Application Install Location" by navigating to Settings/Storage then open the options menu and choose extended storage as the application install location to have future applications installed to the extended storage.
* At the time of the April 16, 2020 PS4 system software version 7.50 the hard drive will act as storage for "Applications" only when used as extended storage exclusively. Storage for Capture Gallery, Saved Data, and Themes will remain in the PS4 system storage.
* Applications can be moved from the PS4 system storage to the extended storage hard drive. As this is done the moving of the application will take priority and can not be done in the background. During testing it took about 20 seconds to move a 1.19 GB application to the extended storage hard drive using a standard PS4 Pro. In further testing it took about 8 minutes to move a 30.12 GB application.

Large Voulume very fast hard drive - plug and play no problems - easy networking to back up 4 home computers with plenty of room to spare - suprising how fast transfering numerous gigabytes of data was.

This hard drive has had excellent performance for me so far. I have it connected to my PS4 pro and loading from this drive is actually faster than from the PS4's internal 5400 rpm drive. I popped the drive open and the actual hard disk is an HGST hard drive that is meant for commercial use in server farms. Being a commercial drive reliability should be excellent. The case also has a cooling fan built in should the drive start running too hot. It's definitely not as fast as the M.2 drive in my desktop but in terms of space 8TB of solid state storage would cost you well over $500. So for extra storage of games or back up storage the speed is definitely decent and not frustratingly slow like some 5400 rpm drives can be. I definitely recommend this drive if you can grab it for under $200 its well worth it for extra storage on your console or your PC.

I’m a photographer (not a tech wiz by any stretch of the imagination), and I purchased this 8TB drive to clear room off my ssd drives which I use for editing. I’m not able to invest in a NAS system at the moment, so this is my most immediate solution. File transfers are plenty fast enough, and I’ve had no issues converting RAW files to DNGs in lightroom. Great “cold storage” solution, and I’m sure I will purchase another one when the need arises.

If you need a large drive with decent speed then this is the external drive for you. Works great on PC, PS4 and Xbox and ok on PS5. I've mainly used it on my PS5 for PS4 games and it's pretty good but the PS5 is slow to read and scan all the installed games. I also found that using a external HDD in general slows down the PS5 UI and makes it slower to boot up for whatever reason. This drive is still good for the PS5 especially with the latest update that lets you archive your PS5 games on extended storage and it has decent transfer speeds. For the PS5 I'd suggest getting a Samsung T5 portable external SSD since its much faster and the PS5 seems to play much nicer with it. If you want the 8tb capacity however then this is the fastest drive for a reasonable price. As a PC, Xbox and even PS4 drive its seems to work better with there OSs for whatever reason. As for game loading it's faster than every other HDD i've used but not as good as an external SSD but that's to be expected. The drive is also kind noisy sometimes and it does require an external power brick to be plugged into the wall. Also the USB ports on the drive are power only so it's not a USB hub just a charging hub. Overall This is a great external PC drive with good speeds and a pretty good PS5 external drive for being able to keep your entire library installed.

I love the fact that this storage drive works with the PS5 Pro and was on sale when I purchased it. Most PS5 games have to be moved to the drive, then copied from the drive back to the Console, but PS4 games can play directly from the storage drive. Since purchasing this, my PS5 Pro runs much faster as well. Great accessory to have. (Just be sure to connect the USB port to the console's C Drive for correct compatibility.)

Fast and reliable drive. Easy set up. The dock is a nice touch as well. USB-C is much faster than my old drive this replaced. 0 issues. Only downside is it has to be plugged into external power, but that was expected. I have a desktop and use this for my backups of my streams and youtube videos I upload.

FAST! fasted external USB mechanical HD I have seen. Loads steam games as fast as internal SSD. Well maybe a couple seconds here or there but not noticeable and you get crazy storage for much cheaper than external SSD. Looks cool on the desk, lol.. The internal fan is kinda loud and the longevity kind of worries me.

Don't let the price scare you. When you do the math especially when compared to an SSD it's a great deal. And in all honesty you'll probably never need more than 8TB of space. It supports USB 3.2 which the next-generation of consoles should take advantage of and if you do get one you're ready to go with all your backwards compatible games. It's super quiet and has a built in fan that only turns on it it gets really hot. I've been running it for 2 days straight and fan never needed to turn on. Solid build and easy to setup. Even has two charge only USB ports on the back. Would recommend to anyone on the fence about getting one. And its faster than those smaller external HDD. 7200 rpm gives it a boost as opposed to most 5200 rpm drives.

Very nice and fast gaming hard drive to store all those huge pc games that take up hundreds of gigabytes to install. It does run hotter than other drives, so aiming a fan on it is well advised, especially during the summer. Very reliable and fast

In the end you get what you pay for and this drive is no exception. It's a hefty drive (weight wise) and a fast performer. I transfer large files of all sizes and the rate is both fast and consistent. WD Black drives have never given me a single problem throughout the years. The only downside I can think of is the 2 usb ports for charging are really unnecessary and are probably the reason why the power supply is 3a instead of 2a, other than that, you can't go wrong if you are in the market for a reliable and quality external drive, especially if you are concerned with reliability as well as speed.

Allows the ability to expand storage for ps5 and it is fast enough to store and play ps4 games on the ps5 saving valuable on board storage. Plug and play with the Ps5. We live in the country and have extremely slow internet so the ability to have my entire library downloaded once and still have plenary of space for more was amazing. With our internet it still took a couple of weeks running 24 hours a day to get the entire library on it. I do have both ps4 and 5 versions of the game on the drive and can easily transfer the 5 version to the ps5 to play or play the 4 version directly from the drive. Highly recommend! Game changer!
