Milo' tech tips on the WD easystore 14TB External

This should be a no brainer, at $309 its a little high if your building a home media server as newer movies and TV Shows take up more and more space so multiple drives are recommended. At $259 this starts to sound pretty good, just think about it, for just a nudge over a grand you can have 4 drives totaling 50.8 TB (that's formatted, because lets face it, if you don't know that you are not going to get a full 14 TB from a 14 TB drive then you need to do some reading up on hard drives and formatting, but still, that's an awful lot of storage and for $2,000 you can have 8 of these and either break 100 TB of storage OR do what i do and have every other drive sync'd so that you have a duplicate of all your information, thus if a drive fails, which they inevitably do, you will still have a backup. Now if you were forward thinking enough, and were able to get these on the 2020 Black Friday sale when tese 14TB easystores where $189.99 then your a smart shopper with a lot of storage. Warranty is easy, WD includes a link to its software which can quickly run a test on any or all of your WD drives and report back if the drive is healthy, has some issues, or is in immanent failure position, which makes RMA's fairly quick and easy so if you need storage, and who doesn't, then these are great, affordable drives with everything you need to add more storage to your Desktop, Laptop, NAS, Home Media Server and even many new TV's can play your content right off the drive as most, like my LG C865OLED UHD 4k TV have Alpha 9 or Aplha 9II processors and USB ports right on the TV making everything extremely easy, because you need to remember, most "Smart" TV's are basically TV's with a computer inside. As for these, its a win-win at almost any price point, also keep in mind that these are NOT the dreaded SMP drives so that is comforting and being USB 3.0 they are fairly quick and easy to use. One last tip, when transporting to a friends house or even from one room to another, I highly recommend unplugging the USB cable from the back of the drive and putting the drive in a carry case or laptop bag as most defects are caused by drops, even when the drive in powered off, and when those drops occur, if you left that thin USB cable plugged in, there is a good chance it will break the internal connector causing physical damage which is not covered under warranty, so treat your drives with care when moving them, and keep them in a well ventilated spot when they are in use. I give these an excellant score on just about everything but i must knock quality down a notch to just "Good" as the type of USB connector that plugs into the back of the drives is very sensitive, i would have preferred one of the sturdier USB 3.0 connectors or perhaps even a USB-C connector, however that comes with its own problems as USB-C is fairly new and not on most desktops, laptops, TV's or Blu Ray players that are older then 2 years, and even many brand new players running $500+ dont have USB-C so just use caution when moving the drives, but with that said, this is typical of almost all brands, not just WD, and your going to pay a lot more for a USB-C based drive and with that out of the way, i say these are my tech tips on the WD easystore 14TB External, Enjoy.

Got this on a Black Friday sale for $200. Best price had seen and have since. No problems. Runs cool, quiet. Have filled with almost 12tb of data since. No failures, issues. Have had on off luck with the Best Buy Easystore. Got a 12tb that heats up to 60c easily. So be sure to test capacity and temps for the length of return period. Don't just leave in box thinking is fine. This one has worked great, no problems like before. Good for storing large amounts of movies etc before the streaming sites censor them all. Would recommend.

Excellent WD external drive. Quiet and fast. Some people have mentioned that it is loud, but I can't get mine to make any loud noises. Now-- every now and then it will do something like calibrate the heads or whatever and it does make a small "chunking" sound, but it makes this sound rarely and it muffled. Transfer speeds are limited to your USB port. This is a USB3 device, so you can expect about 5 mbps when using a USB3 port on your computer. USB2 will be slower. I'm using this to back up several computers in the house as well as storage space to duplicate photos and other stuff. I am very happy with this-- especially for the price.

Personally I don't buy HDD larger than 8TB just because I fear that the more storage I get the more unreliable it can be, however not only has it been reliable but the speed is quicker than I had imagined. Normally with 8TB, I achieve 150-180mbs of write speed. I had expectations of it being the same, but once I had copied into a 14TB I easily achieved over 200mbs. I love these Hard drives and have always bought them since 2020, none have failed on me and i have over 20.

I got this 14TB HDD for a great price @ $189.99, and in the last few weeks of use, I am left with no complaints; everything works as it should and I have not experienced any issue with noise or clicking as some others have reported, unfortunately. This is strictly for personal, non-professional use for backing up a variety of file types. I have not yet run the backup software that is included, or any other software for that matter, so I cannot comment on that. Nevertheless, it was a breeze to set up, quite straightforward really. I did notice that after ceasing to operate the drive (after having initiated activity between the WD and my internal drive, such as during a file transfer, and then going on about my business while leaving the external WD powered on), the drive spins down when not in direct use. This of course adds to its longevity and preserves its lifespan, as others have pointed out. This can, however, be a bit annoying as it requires a brief moment for the drive to start up again should you want to resume file transfer and such between the drives. But if it's working to its own benefit on the other hand, I can tolerate this minor inconvenience. The overall size and design of the case is quite decent, though short of extraordinary, if anybody was concerned. Although a matte finish would probably be ideal to avoid fingerprints and scuffs (reminiscent of WD's My Book model, it appears), I also appreciate the glossy finish on this one. It's nice to glance at this mini tower from time to time and realize that I am set for half a lifetime as far as storage solutions go :)

The Western Digital EasyStore 14TB is a storage solution that combines massive capacity with user-friendly features, making it a perfect choice for those in need of substantial storage space without the hassle. The standout feature, of course, is the enormous 14TB capacity. Whether you're a content creator, a digital hoarder, or simply someone who values having a single place to store years' worth of data, this drive delivers. It's a versatile choice for storing everything from high-definition videos to extensive photo libraries. The EasyStore 14TB is designed with simplicity in mind. The plug-and-play functionality means you can have it up and running within seconds, whether you're using it on a PC or Mac. The included USB connection ensures compatibility with a wide range of devices, from desktop computers to gaming consoles. In terms of performance, the drive maintains a reliable and steady data transfer rate. While it might not be the fastest external drive on the market, its consistent performance ensures that large files are moved without hiccups. One notable aspect is the drive's reliability. Western Digital is a trusted name in the storage industry, known for producing durable products that stand the test of time. With the EasyStore 14TB, you can have peace of mind knowing your valuable data is in safe hands. The drive's compact and sleek design makes it easy to place on a desk or tuck away in a drawer, without cluttering your workspace. Its quiet operation adds to its unobtrusive nature. While the drive itself shines, it's worth noting that it doesn't offer advanced features like hardware encryption or additional backup software. If you're looking for these features, you might want to consider other Western Digital models. In conclusion, the Western Digital EasyStore 14TB is an exceptional external hard drive that excels in providing vast storage capacity in a user-friendly package. If you're after reliable, hassle-free storage for your digital life, this drive offers outstanding value and performance.

    Drive Size Does Matter

When it comes to back up drives, or external drives in general, larger is better. This 14TB Western Digital EasyStore definitely fits that description. It made it to my desktop with its USB connection without prodding. I was also able to copy my 18,000 photos to it without any hitch. The only comment that I would make is that it makes a faint "knocking sound" when not writing data. Is it a concern? Don't know. I have had it now for 21 days, and other than the sounds, it has worked well. I may check with the Geek Squad just to be sure and report back.

If you are not already familiar, look up drive shucking. There is a standard desktop hard drive in these, and when on sale it's almost half price compared to same drive bought as a desktop drive. The warranty isn't great, but I've for thirty of these and have had no failures for several years. Hard drive reliability is way better than it once was.

I use this hard drive for storage of my PC games. For that purpose, it works great. Lots of space for lots of games. But do not try to play games directly off of it. Even if not being used, it will cause 20 second pauses while you play. Unplug it when you play. And transfer any game to your computer before trying to play. Also, it's noisy. So expect to hear 20 seconds of read-write noise even if not being used directly by your device.

Hard drives of this size are a pretty simple thing. Does it work, and how speedy is it? No, you're not setting speed records but when you're storing 14TB on an external drive, you don't need to. I max out at about 150-160MB/sec which is great for the USB interface, and it serves its purpose as a backup/archival drive. Worth it when you can get it under about $16-$17 per terabyte.

This was my first Easystore drive from Western Digital, but I've got a few Essentials drives, which are really the same exact thing. In all cases I highly recommend these drives, especially when deeply on sale ($199 for 14TB is pretty sweet!). They are fast, reliable, and even better, pretty quiet. I have some Seagate 14TB external drives, which are also reliable and fast, but they tend to be the Exos server type drives (in high capacity) and make so much noise that people often return them, thinking they are broken. They are just meant for servers, so the noise isn't a factor in that case, but for home use they sound like they are constantly dying. Anyway, these WD drives tend to be just as fast and reliable without all the noise, so they are my top choice. Knock on wood, but I've yet to have one be faulty, or die on me thus far. Great drives, fast, reliable, quiet, and reasonably priced...and massive storage. Hooray!

I bought this unit (for backup purposes on a Mac) because of its substantial capacity and very reasonable price. Some specs claim the platter spins at 7200 RPM, but I believe 5400 RPM is correct, and that is sufficient for a backup unit. I have purchased many WD drives before, as well as competitive drives, and have found all of them to be well designed and (mostly) reliable, but I have discovered the hard way that they don't last forever. My "go to" units are G-Drive Professional, which are rugged 7200 RPM units, but substantially more expensive. Hard drives are pretty commodified these days, and you get what you pay for. I have no complaints (yet) about this one.

With apologies to George Carlin... I filled up my easyStore 10TB a while ago, so offloaded to another drive. Thus was looking for additional capacity. 12TB's were on sale occasionally, but decided to wait for the 14TB. Who knows when or if a 16TB easyStore will arrive. And my wait was rewarded recently. Ordered it on 3/17. Initially said it would ship in a week, but shipped on 3/19 from the Chicago area, got it the next day in SE Minnesota via Fedex. Inside a larger shipping box with inflatable bags to fill the empty space to keep the external drive box from sliding around. I ordered it so I didn't have to run clear across town to the local BB. Plus avoided the city sales tax as I am outside the city limits in a township. If there are problems I can still return/exchange it to/at the local BB instead of paying to ship it back. CrystalDiskInfo reports WDC WD140EMFZ-11A0WA0 5400 RPM. Firmware revision 81.00A81 Windows properties has Capacity: 14,000,517,541,888 bytes 12.7 TB First is decimal (1000's) second is binary (1024's) Divide the first by 1024 enough times and you will end up with 12.7 Powerbrick is still 12V 1.5A, but is rotated 90 degrees compared to the 10TB brick. Will fit better on a typical power strip, leaves more room. But at 1.2 inches wide at the base the bricks can't be adjacent, at least on my power strip. And the brick also partially covers the next ground pin. But a two wire plug should fit between them. First thing I did was run ChkDsk: 20:33:38.65 Fri 03/20/2020 C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk f: /f /r The type of the file system is NTFS. Volume label is WD 14TB. Then I ran WD Drive Utilities Complete Drive Test. That took about 23 hours to run. Lastly I ran HGST DFT (Drive Fitness Test) SMART Extended Test. That also took about 23 hours to run. In conclusion ChkDsk /f /r is by far the more thorough test. (Used Auto Screen Capture and MouseJiggle to capture the screens and to keep Windows 10 updating the windows. Standalone exe's, no installation needed.) Robocopy'ing (multi-GB size files) from the aforementioned offloaded drive to the 14TB was running around 110 MB/s write speed. Both connected to the same Sunix USB4300NS USB 3 card. Took a combined time of 27 hours to copy 9.58 TB from the offloaded drive and the easyStore 10TB to the 14TB. Had some three wire Thermaltake TT-1225 case fans removed from a disposed case. Mounted them on bolts to blow up into the enclosure. Pretty quiet. During the robocopy, the 14TB was 27 degrees. The other drive, 7200 RPM, in an Orico 6619S3-US-BK open dock, was 42 degrees. So far, so good...

I bought this on sale for right around $200, It was a good value at that price. I actually bought 10 of them. 8 of 10 were able to write at over 220MB/s. Two of them were a newer drive with a more recent manufacture date and hit 240MB/s but had slower random write throughput. They also get quite hot if your transfer takes more than an hour. I'm taking one star off because of the bad random performance.

I bought this on sale for $199, and that makes it a good value for me. I don't think I'll ever fill out the entire drive. I have the same drive that I purchased a couple years ago that is connected to my computer that I use as the main storage. I keep pictures, documents, ripped CDs, ripped movie files in this drive. Still plenty of space left. I bought a second drive to back up my files from my first drive. Pictures, videos and music files are invaluable to me. So, backing them up is a no brainer for me, and this drive feels like it has unlimited space for my usage. I don't keep this drive plugged in at all time, so it won't break or malfunction or become corrupt if I kept it on and plugged in at all time. I back up to this drive as soon as I save new pictures and videos into my main drive. Just FYI, this drive stops spinning after a period of inactivity, which is great for longevity, but you'll need to wait 10 seconds for it to "wake up" if you need to access it. If you need immediate access and quick speeds, this is not the drive for you. Go for an SSD.
