Hey guys and gals...If you buy one of these, remember, and I cannot stress this enough, this is a spin up drive. Unplug when not in use, keep It in a padded and safe case, do not be rough with it, and it should, I stress SHOULD, last a good long time. These do tend to fail if roughed up even a LITTLE so be careful and you won't be disappointed. Don't put them near anything magnetic or with a motor on your desk like an extra hard drive or a cooling fan. I have lost 2 of these from failure, but I STILL like them for on the road travel and download backups.

This USB 3.0 external hard drive is fast, sturdy, very well-priced and convenient. I bought it because I had to back up data from my PC which has 3 separate 1TB hard drives. I had literally no easy way to back up my data before I did a clean install of Windows 10 Pro, until I bought this item. This little drive has enough space for all the data I wanted to save, and an extra TB on top, just in case. This thing is already on my "have before you leave the house" list. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone as a must have. You never know when you might need it, and at $100 for 4TB, it's a no-brainer.

I currently have this plugged into my Netgear Nighthawk for a readyshare server. The drive is handling being split into 5 partitions very well and it works great on all of my MacBooks/PCs when it comes to running daily TimeMachine backups/local cloud storage. This also handles storing videos and movies very well as I can access the files quickly. I only recommend this specific size model to people who are wanting to run huge backups on a disk drive, and/or people who want to run a local cloud storage. Make sure to only buy these drives when they're on sale! Other than that, it's an amazing product!

Return this items and a couple before it, due to not having any update software on device to play on any of the USBs port on a 55in Samsung LED TV. The WD Hard Drive is only a 3.0 device. This device must be certified as a multi 2.0/3.0 device to work with my TV. All other portable hard drives work perfect with my TV. I call tech support WD they could not help. Also, I went online for software updates and their are none!! I needed hard drives to show any movies and other videos onto my TV. So, am using my Toshiba hard drives and other WD hard drives that are 2.0/3.0 devices. I want by a 3.0 software only device again!!

I bought this to use with my PlayStation 4 and it works great. I cannot yet speak to how durable this product is since I have not dropped it and barring my cats knocking it off it will not be dropped. I also cannot speak for its longevity as I have only had less than a week. What I will tell you is that is that it is super easy to use. I plugged it in, and about 47 seconds later it was ready to use and the default storage location for new downloaded/installed software. It is compact external hard drive that is an excellent purchase for anyone who needs a bit more space to not delete older downloads.

This is a rather handy thing to have around. Easily carried in the Insignia™ - Hard Shell Case for Most Portable Hard Drives - Black I got with it. Smaller than a man's hand you could carry it pretty much everywhere. Some test results copying a 5GB file from my internal 1TB SSD drive: To my second internal 1TB SSD Drive (for comparison): about 11 secs @ 465MB/sec. (Note that's megaBYTES, not megabits. To my other external 2TB USB3 drive: 35 secs @ 145MB/sec To this drive: 46 secs @ 110 MB/sec. So reasonably fast and well priced. I recommend this to anyone looking for some good off-line storage.

    WD Red 4TB for cheap

I bought two, and opened one to use as an internal drive(the other will be an external backup for the first.) You will something to pry the case, a #1 philips to remove the adapter board and pliers or a #10 Torx to remove the standoff pegs. The model number on the one I opened is WD40EMRX, a 5400RPM, 64mb cache WD Red NAS drive, just as others have said. Pic of label attached. You are NOT guaranteed to get the same drive, though- some people get blues! The enclosure is very sturdy, but the plastic clips holding it together are not. Glue or tape will be necessary to re-use the enclosure.

I bought this to use as a Time Machine backup. I tossed all the WD software and just used DiskUtility to erase and format it. I partitioned it so that half of it was for Time Machine backups and the other half for regular storage. It seems a little loud which doesn't annoy me, but suggests it might not be as perfectly tuned as it might be. The true measure of this drive will be in how long it lasts. They all fail at some point and if I get 5+ years out of this one, I think I'll be happy. If I get past the 1 year mark, I may be able to recommend it, but not until then.

I purchased this external hard drive to back up everything on all computers in my home. I got this for $90 on sale at the store. It's pretty fast and I have seen speeds of 46MB/s to 112MB/s while transferring files using USB 3.0. I don't know why there's that much fluctuation, but it did stabilize to ~90MB/s when copying a single large file. It's not super loud or super hot. I haven't used the software yet so I can't comment on that. Overall it's a great hard hard drive at a great price. I can't believe how cheap 4TB is nowadays. I trust WD as well I've stuck with them for over a decade now.

Great external drive and plenty of room. Used this for the Xbox One X and S and they work great. Only catch was it wouldn’t recognize the drive if it was plugged in and then turned the Xbox one on “the first time for setup”. The first use turn your Xbox One on after your signed in then plug the WD easystore drive in and the on screen will start automatically to set it up or go into settings-storage and do your setup there. Hope it helps great drive!

Copied about 1.5 TB of data from another USB 3.0 drive easily and fairly quickly (averaged about 80 MB/sec). However, after about a day, the drive appeared to fail and could not be accessed. I was about to return it when I tried the cable from another USB 3.0 drive. The drive functioned perfectly. I purchased a new cable rather than going through a warranty replacement. The drive itself is fine. It does appear to get hot with extended use. It is a 5400 rpm drive, so not the fastest. It works very well as a backup device.

Look, if you're trying to decide what portable storage drive is best for yourself and you have to look through every single comment to make that decision on every product, I recommend living a little, giving it a try and buying two, why two? its digital storage, someday, someway, something will happen to make it fail, so get two and use them and redundant backups, be safe then sorry and not wasting time going through every review

These drives, I have two, are solid and are great. They fit well in the palm of your hand while plugging in the USB3 cable and spin up quickly. Access time is good and it's easy to use as a portable drive. Do yourself a favor, get a case to keep your drive protected while it's being "portable", especially where the cable plugs in"as you would expect"! A good portable drive, this one, and a case will do you well, speaking from experience!

I got this item on sale and for the price of 4TB on the market, it performs flawlessly. Just plug and play and drag and drop all your files that need to be backed up over USB 3.0. I have never used the included software on the drive since I prefer to manage files myself, therefore, cannot comment on that. The plastic design is mediocre, but definitely does not feel cheap. No additional power sources needed as USB 3.0 cable takes care of transferring the files and running the device. The transfer rate is acceptable. Great for people who need a backup solution for personal files with portability.

I bought this external HDD for school. I currently run 4 different virtual operating machines off this drive with no issues. I picked it up on sale for $99 so I was a little skeptical initially, but now I just feel lucky to have caught it at such a great price. It’s not too bulky to put in your bag and haul around. It uses a usb type-b connector cable I easily found a type-b to type-c cable online for use with my MacBook Pro 13”. I did not use any of the pre-installed software.

I needed to back up the files from my server, I needed 10tb total, this and some older drives I already had got me covered. This drive was quick and quiet. I did think I might have gotten a bad one at first because I got what sounded like the "click of death". The thing about a USB3.0 drive is the power required is a bit higher than some of the older legacy ports can provide. When I plug it into a blue or red, 2.0 or 3.0 port everything is hunky dory. I think the problem some folks have with newer drives might be related to this.

Unit works well. No complaints. Priced at 99.00 made it a great deal for 4 tb Giving a 4 because I've had problems with HD externals in the past. Have had 2 go south. Both were due to usb connection. They hit a point where you can no longer plug them in. Due to bad solder connection. You can however remove them. I stacked the 2 aforementioned into a desktop. Maybe not fair to rate this one was others. But As-I stated had 2 fail for same reason. No reason to believe it won't happen when this given its portable. Lots of plugging and unplugging.

This is the best external drive I've ever owned. It was easy to format, always shows up on my Mac desktop, and I'm able to pull up my files with sufficient speed. I make art videos for YouTube, so I use it to store raw video files and finished projects. The large 4TB storage capacity is great! I've used external drives from C-Gate (decent, but sometimes won't show on my desktop) and LaSee (always have had compatibility issues with my Mac), but the WD easystore is the only one that has been trouble free. Definitely recommended!

Disclaimer: I'm bad with tech in general. Needing to reformat this is relatively simple in hindsight but since I needed it for both Mac and Windows, I ended up having to format it twice due to unclear instructions on their website that only suggested to reformat it just for Mac despite me clearly clicking on the instructions for both. Other than that, it has worked fine, a bit slower than my old Toshiba but hopefully, it'll last longer. HOWEVER, there's currently a better sale deal so go find that.

I still have the original ps4 with 500gb hard drive, which is basically pointless. 4tb is amazing!! if you want 2tb it is $20~ cheaper but you just as well get the 4tb. works great with my ps4; took less than 5 minutes to format and now all my playstation network games are on the external hard drive while my main games are on the internal one. I never buy the high quality games digitally; like COD, Star wars, Destiny because I never had the hard drive space, but now I can. and at an affordable price! I highly recommend this for any gamer.
