Don't be fooled by the DURABLE CONSTRUCTION PROTECTS AGAINST SHOCKS statement. I keep this drive in my drone case which has hard foam cut out slots for storage. Had the HD for less than a month and I transferred all my 'important' data to it and 2 weeks later the drive stopped working. SMART is coming up with errors. Definitely a physical error on the drive when I tried to run the Western Digital tools and my own software recovery utilities. Now I need to buy another drive to cannibalize to get my data off the original drive (THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ROOKIES!!). IF you are going to use a portable drive to back up data, get 2 and make 2 copies. Also I bought this drive at a great price at Best Buy but I should have gone with an SSD drive for my important information rather than a conventional platter drive. This drive is still under warranty with Western Digital but I need the information that is stuck on it so after doing what I need to do to get the information off of the drive, it will not longer be under warranty (along with the new drive I will have to use to get my information off the old drive).

NOT good for transferring data from older external

I purchased the 4TB model because my older 2TB WD My Passport is just about full. Rather than waiting until the last minute I decided to start transferring my data over now. I installed the drive on my Toshiba laptop and noticed the really cool app features. Including but not limited to the ability to transfer right from my WD Cloud device. I then connected my older WD external to the same laptop to start the transfer process. Before i could start transferring, I get a message stating there's a WD update i need to install. We've all seen this message before... No reason to be alarmed. Well... After allowing the update... My laptop states theres an error on the drive and needs to be fixed! So... I'm not panicking yet... I let it go through the motions and it then states it could not be fixed. So.. The drive seems to allow me access to it. I still see my files. So, I'm puzzled for a moment wondering what just happened. I reboot my laptop. Everything boots up just fine. Then I try to open one of the folders and NOTHING'S IN IT!! I open another folder and it appears to be fine. So I start opening folders to see whats affected. A few are empty. The rest appear to be fine. I know what you're thinking.. The same thing i thought VIRUS!! Well, I have Norton Security and its current on the virus definitions. So what else could it be!? Meanwhile, I get another pop up message telling me i need to run another scan to fix my drive. Again I allow the process, but now MORE FOLDERS ARE EMPTY. I try to do a Norton file recovery and it doesn't work!! The majority of my irreplaceable files are in limbo or worse.. Lost! So.. You know I'm SICK TO MY STOMACH RIGHT NOW!! Im not sure what happened. So i stopped to regroup and will contact WD for a possible solution. I wouldnt wish or recommend this on my worse enemy!! I'll come back to let you know what happened...

    Should Be Called EASYFAIL

Bought this around July used it everything was fine, then a month or two ago it just started making a clicking noise, and refused to let me move copy or delete files from it!! Tried to get it to work On My Desktop PC and My Laptop but couldn't. Even ran check disk and it seemed to fix it for a while, but then it messed up again. Eventually found the WD Data life Guard tool and seems to have fixed it. Mine seems to have messed up when it had like 50GB or less on it. also sometimes would get tired of it not moving files and would just unplug it because it wouldn't let me eject it. Even though Windows says you can do that I wouldn't recommend it. If It doesn't want to Eject go to whee it says eject and go to devices and printers and most of the time you can click on it and eject it that way.

    Drive did not work

I bought the drive for my MacBook Pro. First, it would not show up in my directory as an external hard drive, I had to force the computer to recognize it. Second, since it was formatted for Microsoft, I tried to reformat it to Mac format, it took several hours and had an ultimate fail in formatting. In other works, a dead disk drive. The good thing, and I do like this about Best Buy, there was no questions when I returned it, got my money back and got a Mac formatted 2T WD hard drive, well worth the money because this drive works quite well. I have reformatted several hard drives to Mac format in the past, so the issue appears to be the hard drive itself, though when I looked at reviews for this particular drive, all the Mac owners said that when they tried to reformat this particular drive, it also failed.

In PS4, drive hiccups in cut scene playback

I purchased this drive as expanded storage for my PS4 pro and fully intended to play games directed of the WD drive. For the majority of games it is functional; however, games that are heavy in cut scenes playback falters noticeably. For example, in Kingdom Hearts for the PS4 every time there is a scene or camera angle change the scene freezes for a fraction of a second. It is just enough to take you completely out of the experience (as a comparison such freezing does not occur with the stock internal drive that comes with the system). I image this drive is suitable for the majority of uses, but gaming is not one of them

I have an older WD external drive, so I bought this new slimmer version. I am not very happy with the set up, it immediately asked if I wanted to backup cloud accounts I chose yes, it copied all file but two but didn’t show the two it couldn’t. I then tried to back up my laptop and cannot figure out how to do it. I have opened the manual but the directions are not clear and this is anything but “Easy” I am not happy with my purchase.

This is alot of storage for a great price. BUT it has been causing some issues with my PC. Not sure if there is an incompatible program on it. But it will repeatedly appear and disappear and not be accessible. When I went to the WD website to see if others were having problems, it was not listed as a product of theirs--making me think this is a BestBuy branded product. Still trying to troubleshoot this--will use it with my laptop and see if it has the same issues at some point. Would recommend it with reservation until I can sort this issue out.

This was purchased as a backup drive for important files. After purchasing, I went to look something up on the Western Digital website and could not find the purchased drive. Upon further research, I determined this is made for Best Buy and possibly with lower grade components or components originally intended to be an internal drive. I returned the item as I need an excellent quality backup. If you are using this for less important backups then it might work fine for you.

can't be formatted with latest Apple IOS

Very bad experience; both I and 2 Apple personnel were unable to format the drive to use it for backing up my MacBook. When I called Western Digital to discuss it, they told me I had to use an earlier Apple IOS to format it, and that if I looked far enough into their website, I should be able to find information about that [they offered me nothing, not even a complimentary drive, when I told them that I and Apple had wasted hours trying to format the drive].

I've used WD external hard drives for years; I have five of them. The latest ones, including this one, are handy and reliable, but are very very slow. This is true whether copying from internal hard drive to WD or copying WD to WD. Would buy a different brand if I knew of one that was better. Plan your backups and big copies as overnighters. Overall, I really like Best Buy.

Worked to backup old computer. Tried accessing it the next and the external drive would not mount. Everything I had backed up disappeared. Let the computer sit for a bit and was able to find the backed up items; but it's hit and miss when it works. Disappointed purchase for the amount spent.

Bought this in November and it must have fell from the desk while moving the computers around and lost everything. It shows there is something on the drive but it will not read it. Asked Bestbuy to see if they could recover the data and they said they could send it off and it would cost between 400-2000 to get the data. Bought a SSD for dependability.

I had a previous version from the same manufacturer which I had problems and it failed. When I ordered this drive, I am not able to get it to connect to my computer - which remembers the older model. WD Support is email only and initial response takes days - referring simply to the on-line "problem-solving" that I'd already tried.

Unit sat on top of computer as external drive and one day just appeared to be blank. Used about 2Tb. Ran WD tools - Smart Drive passed but failed both quick test and extended test. Windows now lists drive as RAW. Did not have power failure or pull USB cable without removing via Windows. Sad and unhappy.

I've had the drive for 2 weeks, and have already had to repair it 3 times. It refuses to eject under Windows 10, so I have to completely shut down the computer to unplug the drive safely. I was hoing it would be more stable than my old Seagate drive, but sadly, it's not

I absolutely hate the software. It seems easy to set up but it will not backup everything I included in the backup. I got a notification of an error report and it won't open. Online support by WD does not exist.

Once you get it set-up, this hard drive works very well. However, out of the box it is read-only and you have to install the proprietary software to make it work. I'm way too used to plug and play devices to give a good rating to something like this.

This is a Best Buy Hard Drive that is only branded by Western Digital. Western Digital doesn't even list it on its website. If you wait long enough, you can buy this drive for only $79. It is good only for file transfers and not backup of important information.

This drive is ok. Not even good. The drive started to die after copying 60gb of data to it in one chunk. Drive arm clicks?!?! WTF! ULTRA LOW QUALITY FOR A REPUTABLE COMPANY. I only buy western digital for my data. But never again an easystore

I'm no computer expert but found this not very set up friendly. Wish it was more step by step. If left plugged in all the time it seems to slow down my mouse even when not backing up.
