Great for Time Machine - with a minor issue

So far the hard drive has been working wonderfully. It is fast and integrated well with my new Macbook. I needed something to backup my computer using Time Machine. Time Machine would take up a lot of memory especially if you're backing up multiple times a month. Having the option to scroll back in time, I needed much more memory than my previous 1TB drive. Now onto my experience - there's two parts in my story and the best part comes first. When I unboxed the drive and plugged it into my machine it quickly recognized the disk and asked me to set it up for Time Machine. I clicked yes and it lead into an issue on reformatting. Now comes the second part where it gets a little ugly. I had to punch in a couple of commands in the terminal in order to force delete the information of the disk from my computer and forcibly reformat the disk to be optimized for my Mac. In the end, the drive works well and the only qualms is its compatibility with Mac's Time Machine. The box does not lie, it is compatible with the Mac - just a few steps to reformat the disk is necessary and some knowledge in the use of Mac's Terminal.

I bought this neat little drive to back up media files. I use a MacBook Pro, and I wasn't able to format this drive for my computer. I tried Disk Utility. I tried Terminal. I watched numerous YouTube tutorials. Nothing worked. I was just about to return to Best Buy to ask for a Geek's assistance. Then I decided to do what I should've done in the first place...visit the WD Support Site. They give clear, simple directions for formatting the drive for the Mac: https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?h=p1&ID=3865&lang=en&p=238#highsierra So now it seems to be humming along nicely. The little white LED keeps flashing even when there's no activity on the drive. I wish it would light up only when data is being written to or read from the drive. That's a minor quibble. All in all, for the price, this seems to be a Best Buy best buy for sure.

The differences between hard drive manufacturers tend to be minor, but I have had slightly better experience with WD over Seagate. This 4 TB hard drive was priced to move at an amazing cost per TB price point. The USB 3.0 connectivity is great for most newer computers that can accommodate the faster USB 3.0 transfer rate. But there is an important caveat that you should consider. USB 3.0 is quickly being replaced by the faster USB C standard (a.k.a. USB 3.1) and the even faster Thunderbolt standard (found on the newest Macs). If you don't need an external drive right away, and you intend to purchase a new computer with USB C or Thunderbolt ports in the near future, you might want to wait a bit before investing heavily in USB 3.0 products. While the USB C standard is generally backward compatible, it's only a matter of time before USB 3.0 transfer speeds seem slow and out-of-date compared to the zip of USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt.

Would recommend to those seeking a new hard drive that is portable and more storage room. Bought this at half off the original price of 199 for 4tb. It not bad, but a bit too pricey for me. Was eager to buy it now at the promotion best buy member only gets and you have to buy this online only. Bought this to free up my ps4 console and at this size it definitely give room to your ps4 and your mind a set of space to breath easily. Was going to get a 6tb but didnt find one and this 4tb is only exclusive to best buy. I like that it is portable and only charge or power on by a usb cable. which is a big plus. As for data write/read speed i can't complain it does it what its suppose to do. I love the 4tb size and it is fairly more than enough to store those game updates to game downloads. Would recommend it to those who wants something portable, compact and large amount of storage space. Oh this is not my first WD hdd.

I needed a larger drive for TimeMachine and caught this one on sale for $80.00. I like that it is powered by USB so that is one less power adapter. It doesn't need to be fast to act as a backup drive and it is very quiet. The only fault I'll give it is that when powered downed, it remains in standby mode when attached to my usb hub, so I have to power the hub down fully if I don't want the pulsing light. Most drives are smarter than this one regarding that. So far, no problems and 4 tb is about the maximum I'm willing to go with mechanical hard drives since they tend to switch to shingle-type drives at sizes larger than this. I've had seagate and western digital and every other brand in between and none of them are better or worse than the others, so I shop by price and simply plan to replace every 2-3 years.

Preface: I already owned two WD My Passport drives previous to purchasing the Easystore 4TB drive. I have our Photos library migrated on my iMac to the external usb hard drive. My wife takes hundreds of photos on the daily and our 1TB My Passport was filling up quickly, so I purchased this drive for the extra store. I have had bad experiences with Seagate, Lacie and Toshiba in the past so I stick with Western Digital now FOR A REASON. I would give this drive 5 stars, but for some reason, I had a hard time getting my iMac to recognize it in the first place! honestly, I'm not sure what I even did to get it to see the drive, but somehow it finally did. Now I have my Photos and iTunes library exported onto the drive, freeing up countless gigabytes on my 2011 iMac. I purchased this drive for one hundred bones, and don't regret it. It was and still is a great deal. Don't hesitate!

What’s up fellow gamers! This WD easy store external HD is great, it works wonderfully with the PS4 I had a little problem with getting mine to work on my PS4, but that was straight O.E. I called Sony and they helped me set it up in like 2 seconds. After that I downloaded 2 or 3 full games with no problems it couldn’t be easier:) I love this hard drive. One thing though make sure you never disconnect it from the PS4 and not reconnect it before turning the system back on because it will give you an error message and make you defrag the HD. Now why are you still sitting there with no memory on you PS4? Run don’t walk to Best Buy and buy this Sweet HD you will love it like I do.

I was pleased to find the back up a reflection of my working drive and not coded and/or difficult to locate items while most other back up software has coded or otherwise recorded files. By accident I erased a file of images from my desktop that I was working on. I went to the back up. Unfortunately it was not complete as it was missing images and the back up file had images I had deleted from the original file still there. I hope that was because it was a very active working file. Hopefully my correspondence and other record files will be completely backed up and up to date. Random comparisons of other back ups to the drive contents show equal file contents.

Seems to work well thus far. I originally purchased 2 of these. One to use with my Xbox One S & one to use with my Dell laptop. I returned the one for my Xbox One S because though its game load speeds were comparable, it was a bit slower than my WD My Passport Ultra I purchased a couple years back (The old version). I decided to keep the one for my laptop and it is working well thus far. I had to configure it in disk management before I was able to use it though (I don't know whether this is because I had originally formatted it for Xbox One or is a requirement from the start). Overall I am happy with this drive. It looks nice, performs fairly well, and for $100 isn't bad at all.

I went shopping for a large external HD to back up my videos, and the WD Easy Store 4TB fits the bill (in addition to being priced right). However, the first one I bought was dead on arrival at home. Best Buy had no problem with returning it, and they managed to find one more of it. I swapped for the new one, got it home, and have been very satisfied ever since. I would suggest that, if possible, you take yours to the Geek Squad desk and have them verify that it works. Assuming that it isn't "after hours" they should be able to accommodate you. I can't rate it a 5 due to the first drive, but the second one is chugging right along (and it is a USB3 connection).

So much faster than my Samsung galaxy S5

My S5 was totally out of memory, I had to delete an app every time I wanted to add an additional one. It was definitely time for an upgrade. The transfer of information to this phone from the old phone was relatively easy. I did encounter a big glitch when trying to transfer my WhatsApp messages but eventually after many hours of trying and uploading to Google Drive they came in. It's so much faster than my old phone! It's a bother that you need to purchase more new charging cables (this phone uses C to A). So far, it's 3 days in use, and I'm happy, but the battery seems to run down quickly. Maybe I'm running too many apps.

I bought this to back up to my present 500GB HDD WD elements, partioned space for my mac time machine, and still have little over 2TB of spare data for future projects! Makes a relatively quiet rattle that you could only hear if you place the device next to your ear and parts feel even more sturdy than the WD elements HDD that I currently have. It's a perfect device if you only need space for storage and nothing fancy like transfer rates or USB-C.

This drive is a BestBuy exclusive and does not include the encryption software that is bundled with the standard Passport drives. I'm using this just for Lightroom photos and don't need encryption so no problem for me. The drive is fast enough for my photo editing. It connects flawlwssly though I wish they included a USB-C type cable. I bought a USB 3.1 Type C (USB-C) to Micro B (Micro USB) Cable ifrom Amazon which works perfectly with this drive at the rated speed. If you don't need encryption (and there's plenty encryption apps available for free) and can pick this up when it's on sale you've got a great deal.

This external hard drive is a great portable backup option. It was very cost effective compared to name brands, my guess because it is much more cheaply housed. We purchased it specifically to transfer photos and videos to. It is fast and convenient. The only drawback it has is that it is not nearly as durable as the name brand drive I previously purchased. I dropped it on our floor from about 3 feet up once and it popped apart. Very cheap plastic. I am going to add some duct tape to the outside for safety sake. I would definitely purchase again due to the bargain price since it does the job.

Hey guys and gals...If you buy one of these, remember, and I cannot stress this enough, this is a spin up drive. Unplug when not in use, keep It in a padded and safe case, do not be rough with it, and it should, I stress SHOULD, last a good long time. These do tend to fail if roughed up even a LITTLE so be careful and you won't be disappointed. Don't put them near anything magnetic or with a motor on your desk like an extra hard drive or a cooling fan. I have lost 2 of these from failure, but I STILL like them for on the road travel and download backups.

    WD Red 4TB for cheap

    Posted
    Chook

I bought two, and opened one to use as an internal drive(the other will be an external backup for the first.) You will something to pry the case, a #1 philips to remove the adapter board and pliers or a #10 Torx to remove the standoff pegs. The model number on the one I opened is WD40EMRX, a 5400RPM, 64mb cache WD Red NAS drive, just as others have said. Pic of label attached. You are NOT guaranteed to get the same drive, though- some people get blues! The enclosure is very sturdy, but the plastic clips holding it together are not. Glue or tape will be necessary to re-use the enclosure.

I bought this to use as a Time Machine backup. I tossed all the WD software and just used DiskUtility to erase and format it. I partitioned it so that half of it was for Time Machine backups and the other half for regular storage. It seems a little loud which doesn't annoy me, but suggests it might not be as perfectly tuned as it might be. The true measure of this drive will be in how long it lasts. They all fail at some point and if I get 5+ years out of this one, I think I'll be happy. If I get past the 1 year mark, I may be able to recommend it, but not until then.

Copied about 1.5 TB of data from another USB 3.0 drive easily and fairly quickly (averaged about 80 MB/sec). However, after about a day, the drive appeared to fail and could not be accessed. I was about to return it when I tried the cable from another USB 3.0 drive. The drive functioned perfectly. I purchased a new cable rather than going through a warranty replacement. The drive itself is fine. It does appear to get hot with extended use. It is a 5400 rpm drive, so not the fastest. It works very well as a backup device.

I needed to back up the files from my server, I needed 10tb total, this and some older drives I already had got me covered. This drive was quick and quiet. I did think I might have gotten a bad one at first because I got what sounded like the "click of death". The thing about a USB3.0 drive is the power required is a bit higher than some of the older legacy ports can provide. When I plug it into a blue or red, 2.0 or 3.0 port everything is hunky dory. I think the problem some folks have with newer drives might be related to this.

Unit works well. No complaints. Priced at 99.00 made it a great deal for 4 tb Giving a 4 because I've had problems with HD externals in the past. Have had 2 go south. Both were due to usb connection. They hit a point where you can no longer plug them in. Due to bad solder connection. You can however remove them. I stacked the 2 aforementioned into a desktop. Maybe not fair to rate this one was others. But As-I stated had 2 fail for same reason. No reason to believe it won't happen when this given its portable. Lots of plugging and unplugging.
