After 4 years of a lot of use my Seagate hard disk died on my Dell Inspiron N7010 laptop so the decision was simple, I knew I couldn’t afford a SSD and honestly I care more for storage than speed so basically I check online on Best Buy and came upon 3 options. Seagate, WD or Toshiba I already had Seagate and by all means I think they are good but I believe WD has the edge or at least that has been my experience and Toshiba I really wasn’t interested. I have 3 WD portable hard drives 1 terabyte each and they are still going strong just to give you an idea my laptop is on from 7 am to 9pm Monday to Friday and a few hours on over the weekend so that is a lot of hours of work for that old Seagate so no complaints just wished it last longer but that one was 640 Gb and this one is 1 terabyte so I’m happy with the extra storage plus I need something reliable and WD is very good in my opinion. It fit perfectly on my laptop I backup all my documents, videos and pictures and did a clean install of Windows 7 again, I had the original backup disk done by the Geeks here on Best Buy when I bought the laptop plus the extra Cd’s with all the programs from Dell so the installation was a breeze honestly the most painful part was waiting for all the windows updates and finally for the SP1 update which it took a while but I knew that so no biggie. You can clone your entire hard drive with their software and backup everything to another portable hard drive if you like or even to the new one with a sata cable if you have one. I have one from Acronis I got long time ago but I wanted to start fresh and no bring all problems to the new drive so I didn’t mind put back all my programs, pictures, videos and expend a couple of days doing that my laptop is faster now just like a brand new. The drive is super quiet and it works fine no problems at all if you are looking for storage and good price look no further, one other thing it may help you if your laptop is plug to the wall all day like mine I have it set to “High Performance” where the battery indicator is I’m not sure how is on other laptops but I suppose is the same usually it comes set to balanced but I need the speed and performance more than anything and I found this very useful. You may find it cheaper online by other vendors but if the hdd is faulty or damage and you have to pay to have it shipped back to them then you no longer save any money plus you have to wait a few days, one time I did get a bad one and it was here at Best Buy store but as soon as I realize the drive was bad I exchange it for another one at the store and in 10 minutes I was back in my house no problems and specially no need to wait. Some things are ok to buy online others like this not for me. Hope this review can help with your decision and good luck with your drive.

Get WD 1TB SSD 3D NAND Instead

I wanted to speed up my Dell i5 Inspiron 3650 desktop so I thought a new HDD would help. This product is MUCH slower than the Toshiba 1TB 3.5” SATA 5400 RPM that came with my Dell. Maybe the 3.5” version would have been faster but I didn’t go that route. Here’s what you SHOULD DO: I bought a 1TB WD SSD 3D NAND SATA 2.5” and installed it, cloned my existing Toshiba HDD with Macrium (free software) onto the SSD and then removed the Toshiba and used the SSD as the C drive. All operations, including boot up, now FLY! I give THAT product - the SSD 3D - a 5 out of 5 star rating. The SSD is also a 2.5” SATA device. It cost me $139 while this HDD costs $90 less, but it was WELL worth it. If you have the $139 to spend then avoid ANY HDD and go SSD 3D NAND. If not, I would choose my Toshiba 3.5” HDD 1TB that came with my Dell over this product, but keep in my the 2.5” vs 3.5” difference so that is not an apples to apples comparison. Since this product works I could not give it less than 2 stars to be fair, but the 2 star rating should tell you to get a faster product unless you are on a 2 star budget. If anyone needs more specifics on how to install or clone to an SSD don’t worry - I was a newbie at this but found tons of beginner internet articles describing the tasks.

I am a UCF student who is a very hard worker and my computer had everything on r since 2012. I never backed it up until now I know yo always do so because it crashed and I lost everything. This is the worst thing that can happen to a very studious student especially when you take all your school notes on your computer, etc. Anyways, I went into Best Buy to get a second opinion at geek squad and said the same exact thing that they could not retrieve anything, they really did everything that they could to help out. As a student we are broke, and I was trying to figure out financially how I was going to pay for my computer new hard drive, and the installation. Geek Squad knew I was under the impression of having financial problems and was able to relieve me and discount me. I was thrilled. But the amount of work the squad went through with me coming back and forth and changing my mind because my computer was everything to me I really do appreciate them. They were all so very friendly and always asked me if I needed anything, answered all my questions and explained to me the process and comforted me during the situation. I was so blessed to have such a great team to work with. Shout outs to the best geek squad at Best Buy at Waterford. And their wonderful management. My computer has been working great since and I have my old hard drive if one day I have the finances to retrieve that info.

The price for the WD 1TB drive was reasonable. It was easy to install into the notebook PC because the PC manufacturer (IBM/Lenovo) had a good design compared to the Dell that was not designed to ever have the drive replaced. I was intending to get the Black but it was not available when I stopped in, so I got the Blue. Thanks to Best Buy for stocking the model WD10JPVT which has normal dimensions (instead of WD10TPVT that has a height of 0.49/12.50 so would not have fit). I used Acronis to re-install onto the new drive. Acronis was not able to copy from the old to the new drive because the block sizes were diferent, but Acronis clarified that Backup of the old then Restore onto the new would handle the difference in native media block size, and that worked without a hitch! The new 1TB WD drive was a 4K block size currently formatted as 512 emulated, and the old drive was 512 native, so copy to a different block size was not allowed) The full system backup using Acronis worked to my FAT32 backup because Acronis handled splitting the files as needed for FAT32 (Windows didn't do that for me, so my previous backups were always limited in size by the file size limit on FAT32. Performance was not found to be any slower than my previous drive.

I don't know how helpful a review of a hard drive can be. I needed a hard drive because my last one died. I bought this one at the store, took it home and installed it. I put it in a Macbook Pro. The installation involved taking the screws out of the bottom of the machine and taking the bottom cover off (with the machine closed and upside down). Then, there are 4 screws that hold the drive mounting bracket in. I took those off and slid the one mounting bracket off, disconnected the cable and took out the old drive. There is a small piece that screws into the side of the drive that helps the mounting bracket hold it in place - this drive doesn't come with those, so don't throw away the old drive until you're done with the installation. I simply reversed the process to put the new one in. If you're even remotely mechanically inclined you can do it yourself. Total installation time was probably 6-8 minutes. It works. Hopefully it will last as long as I have the computer.

Let's be honest, I could say that this is the best hard drive ever then you could get one and it could crash and burn right after you load all your precious data on it (luckily you kept a back-up right?). The truth is that, for me, this hard drive was exactly what the box said. I installed it into an early 2011 MacBook Pro without any problems. It has run happily ever since (albeit a bit on the noisy side at times). It hasn't crashed. The speed is exactly what I expected. I have no complaints. Will it work for you? Maybe. Odds are that out of the millions of these things that are made yours will be just fine. There is a chance that you may get a lemon but that's going to happen with anything you buy. Back up your data and don't get too upset if you are the exception. The rest of us thank you for taking one for the team. In summary: It's working and I don't have any complaints. I hope yours does too.

I purchased this as a replacement hard drive for a 13" Dell 2 in 1 laptop. After taking out the old drive, and putting this one in its place, I noticed it was just slightly thicker. If you have ever taken apart one of the new 'thin' laptops today to do anything, you will see there isn't much room in there. The thicker hard drive made it tough to get everything back together, but I was able to 'squeeze' it into place. I'm not sure if a Seagate drive is any thinner or if the solid state drives are thinner and would make a good replacement option, but I didn't want to spend a couple hundred bucks to find out. So I just went with this drive. It's still working fine 6 months later. So just be aware if you are getting this for a thin laptop that you may have some installation issues.

Out of the pkg the mouse on this computer was defective ,I have spnt hrs with Dell's tech who took control of the computer, but did not succeed in fixing it. By the time I realized that he couldn't fix it the return period with Best Buy had lapsed and I am holding a very frustrating computer. When i touch the mouse on the left I get an options window, it takes several touches in a remote area of the screen to get rid of the window. In order to get the mouse to work I have to use my finger nail on the extreme lower left of the mouse, which is often not successful. Often I have to punch the mouse repeatedly to get it to work. Also, the audio is raspy to the extent that the voice is not to be understood.

I purchased this unit as an upgrade to the 500GB unit that came standard with the MacBook Pro. It is easy to install, so the $50 price tag was much more alluring than paying 3x that much to have Apple install it. The unit operated fine for the first 6 months or so, but then started to exhibit slower and slower boot up times, and it seemed to get "lost" quite often and I spent way too much time staring at the beachball from h**l. Finally last week, it flat out would not boot up. Luckily, I had backed up the drive before this happened, so no data was lost. I would not recommend this drive, nor any other rotating media for a laptop application. The reliability is just too suspect. I upgraded to the PNY 500GB solid state drive, and I could not be happier with the blazing speed and stability of my system. It's literally like having a new computer.

I took my computer in so a window update I did could be taken off my computer. End result I received a call that the hard drive was corrupted and I need another one. When I got the computer back the only thing on it was Windows. I lost ALL access to everything else I had including my Yahoo email, which I still cannot access. I had to change emails and lost EVERYTHING that I had in the yahoo account. I cannot get my bill notification either. I do not believe I had a problem with the drive, I was using it and I had no problem until I hit the window update. I took the computer to another location and they gave me back my Microsoft office, but nothing else and they can't help me. I WILL NEVER take my computer their for work again.

The nine year old Dell I have HD finally threw the towel in. Had a new 1 TB HD installed by the guys at Best Buy for a very reasonable price that included the WebRoot virus program. This HD made the old Dell almost as quick as the new MAC Book Pro I have. I now run both lap tops side by side for different task and am totally impressed with the new life the Dell has. I really was just repairing the Dell as a back up computer - but now - I walk over to it and use it as a frisky lap top that it never was before. For no more than the up-grade cost of $79.00 - I would recommend to anyone that has an aging lap top to go to the Geek Squad and have them install a new higher capasity HD. You won't be sorry. Yes - the Dell Bloat wear is also gone - so that helps too.

I have never attempted to replace a laptop hard drive and, although there was a bit of a learning curve, I was able to accomplish it! The drive is quiet, as promised, and I now have the space needed to store and produce my music projects. The salesman (and saleswoman) who helped me, each, on two different days (as I was gathering the courage to try this upgrade) were helpful, knowledgeable, new exactly what I needed and were honest about what I DIDN'T need! I appreciated that!! I only spent what I needed to spend, got a great deal on the drive, confirmed my procedures with the salespeople, and successfully installed the new drive. I've been working my laptop hard for the last month and couldn't be happier! I would definitely buy WD drives/products again.

    WD 1TB disk for laptop

    Posted

Fair price for the disk at $79. I bought a USB WD 2tb disk to backup to. After hunting found a free partial version of acronis on the WD site. No instructions what so ever, tried reading the handbook available for download. Did the clone option, took 2 hours and the last it said was copying MBR successful. In setup I selected the USB to boot from. Wouldn't do it, suggested fixing it. It just cycled and would never boot. I could see all the information on the USB through boot to command and using the old DOS commands, but of course nothing would run. After some 5 hours of trying I took it back. I can't believe all the reviews that Acronis worked perfectly. This should have been a 3-5 step process with some good software. WD BIG FAIL on that part.

If you have realistic expectations you won't have any complaints. I am using this WD drive in an external with the intention of eventually using it in my Mac Mini for music storage. Even though I've had it a shortime I'm confident it will remain reliable for years to come - most of us know poor quality HHDs sounds like at start up- That is why it deserves five stars. It's not an SSD and you may not want to put it in your laptop as the main boot but it deserves five stars because it does it's job. *****

A solid 2.5" laptop hard drive. The only real drawbacks are that it spins at 5400 rpms, and has a cache of 8MB. Granted, for the money, those are honestly minor flaws. The hard drive is a solid performer, and start up [for a 5400rpm drive] is somewhat quick: opens to Linux Ubuntu 14.04 in 20 seconds (or faster). Additionally, the ability to save up to 1 terabyte of data is simply awesome. If it had a larger cache and/or spun faster, it would be a true 5 star drive. Heck, some would say that it already is a 5 star drive, when you consider the cost. If it lasts for over 5 years without a blip, then I would gladly upgrade my rating to 5 stars...so far, I've only had it for a few months...

All I needed was more space as Windows apps consumed my tiny hard drive. I was happy with XP but my hard drive was getting full and I wanted to dual or tipple boot Win 7 and maybe a flavor of Linux. I downloaded the software from the site and it did not recognize the new blank drive as a WD drive which halted my whole upgrade till I used a different partition copy program. Once I got past that chasm, things went smooth for installing the second OS. The transfer software would be better used on a desktop or find a better way to recognize the MFR of the drive. No hardware performance issues.

Purchased this hard drive to replace/upgrade a failing 500GB laptop hard drive. Swap-out was simple and straightforward; took less than 5 mins (most of which was removing/replacing screws and swapping the metal hard drive frame). Formatted easily and re-installation of OS & software occurred flawlessly (unable to clone due to errors on original drive). Faster boot time compared to previous drive, but that may be because of errors on previous drive. However, it is not slow to boot up. New hard drive continues to live up to expectations with no errors, and the extra capacity is a definite bonus.

The hard drive is perfect. the reason why I did not give it five stars. is that when I bought my laptop. I put full coverage and each time I use the geek squad lately. Stead of them fixing my laptop they kept breaking it. maybe it's just me But it just went in for a !!hard drive!! and all the sudden my window broke on it the handles broke on it and happen inside the shop in the Best Buy store! it's been almost 2 months and I haven't seen my laptop since then? They send it back to HP and hopefully something happens and I finally get my laptop or I guess I just buy a new one?

I've been most satisfied with past Western Digital products, and this hard disk is no exception. Just the drive I needed as a secondary device in my mid-2012 MacBook Pro, as its optical bay can't reliably handle SATA III devices. I may have given this advice before, but if you have between an early-2011 and late-2012 MBP and want to add a secondary drive to complement your SSD, you MUST install no later than a SATA-II device in the optical bay. This drive has performed quite efficiently and reliably since it was installed; definitely worth the trip!

My MacBook Pro fell & was damaged beyond repair that my OS couldn't be found on startup. I reviewed my options and decided my best course of action was to replace my internal HDD. I went to my local Best Buy to Locate a cheap but ample replacement and found this gem. After installation I was surprised at how fast it worked to be aging technology. My only regret about this purchase is how loudly it performs when reading/writing files. I would recommend to someone who needs a inexpensive replacement, but not quite ready to make the leap towards SSD.
