Dell Computer and Best Buy are on MY team!

Dell worked with me to provide important information on a disk for Best Buy's Geek Squad's use in replacing my hard drive. There was only a 9-day turnaround from the moment I took it into Best Buy...and the day I walked out with my computer turn-keyed. That's unheard of...especially with the coordination of service/product information that was needed to ensure the repair and replacement would actually happen. And, I was the middle-man! Dell treated me with the utmost respect as a consumer...realizing Best Buy was indeed willing and able to repair their product versus Dell thwarting repair efforts in hope of me purchasing a new Dell laptop. It never crossed my mind...as I received, "flash-drive service". In retrospect, that ideal experience...was not coincidental...but intentional...from both parties. Therefore, I envision myself purchasing a Dell in the future, from Best Buy, due to the spectacular service experience I incurred. That's a "match made in heaven"...and I am living on earth! Envisioning myself purchasing another Dell is a big statement coming from me, considering I have mentally prepared myself for the day when I can afford an Apple product...this is definitely a head-turner experience. I like the advancements available in Apple technology...but, I don't have to incur more expense to receive a quality product. I believe everyone should have access to affordable technology...ranging from our very young...to our very old...and in that regard, I think it should be free for them after a certain threshold of age! I would love to open their eyes to the "promised land" while they are here on earth! Our elderly suffer with tunnel-vision while the rest of the population's world is opening to vision beyond belief. We can connect them with phone service through their internet...and they wouldn't have to incur a mobile service charge. Now, we're talking about freedom!!! (A girl's gotta dream...). Again...an affordable product and service provider would make this doable. So, let's re-cap... the disk from Dell came overnight mail at no charge to me, the hard drive cost was $49, purchased at Best Buy, and my Geek Squad service price was exactly what I was quoted before the hard drive failure discovery. I'd say that's a "fair shake". My Dell computer is polished up shiny and new...and cruisin' at speeds as originally intended to. This family of 3 is especially grateful as we share this 1 device, and it accommodates all of our needs...efficiently and effectively. Thanks Dell and Best Buy...we make a great team! :)

Bought this hard drive (WDBMYH5000ANC-NRSN) to replace a Toshiba MK1237GSX on my HP Pavilion dv9420us with bad blocks. During the initial setup (using Win PE booted from usb), out of 10 to 15 reboots (didn't record the exact count), the drive showed up 3 times as unreadable in diskpart. When I finally got back into my Win XP installed on the second hard drive (the computer has two hard drives and the WD was going to replace the first one), the first time I was able to access the WD hard drive without any problem, but when I ran WD's own "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic" tool to test it, it showed up as having 0GB capacity, while ironically, the tool correctly reported the second hard drive (Toshiba) as having 120GB capacity. I rebooted and ran the tool again, now it correctly reported the WD hard drive's capacity of 500GB. However, after I shut down the computer and turned it back on, the hard drive showed up as "unformated", though in fact I had already made two partitions both formatted as NTFS during the initial setup. I rebooted the computer without doing anything to the hard drive to see what would happen, and again it came back to normal. I am not going to trust my system and data with such an erratic hard drive, and I want to caution future shoppers of potential data, money and time losses if they choose to buy it.

It was a good purchase because it was a very thin drive, and felt that it gave a good performance while using it with windows 10 on my laptop. Also I felt it did not heat up as much as other hard disks do. It had to do with being thinner than other hard disks of its size, since placing the hard disk on a metal bracket, and so it gave it some space from having the hard disk surface touch the inside flat surface of the laptop. It was 3gbs/second transfer rate, and I think the speed was 5400rpm, and it was also AF (advanced format) for about 52 dollars. It served its purpose, it was not refurbished, and it looked like a legitimate hard disk for a laptop and not one of those hard disks that are manufactured for placing in external usb hdd enclosures, and so I say it so you know you will be expecting to get a completely new hard disk from western digital brand.

Five stars for the drive. Purchased to replace the failing OEM hard drive in an HP Pavilion laptop. Installation was painless and the new drive runs great. Spindle speed 5400 RPM is technically slower than the OEM drive it replaced, but I don't notice a difference in access speed. Five stars also for WD's downloadable Acronis TrueImage (ATI) software. ATI will backup all partitions including hidden Windows partitions and the boot sector, so the entire contents can be transferred to the new WD hard drive. Bootable ATI recovery disk can be created on either a CD-ROM or a USB stick, though the WD edition will only run if a WD drive is installed. ATI gets a fifth star for its ability to be installed and run from the old hard drive AND wipe the old drive in place. This is useful if you only have one SATA cable and you're replacing a non-WD drive.

Hi. So far the hard drive and Webroot have functioned properly, although I've already seen a few moments when they could have been faster. I also appreciate that your service person offered to install Windows 10. My problem is the way you sell the extra year service. You are not really going to give me a bad hard drive are you? And if you did, won't you replace or repair anyway (within, say, a few months time)? Even if you did decide I needed to pay for another hard drive, it would still be only another $80, less than half the price of the service. Ok, and I really appreciate that I didn't need to ask the obvious, in that you offer the internet security as part of the package, but why are you charging for it [I wasn't asked ahead of time... maybe I would have preferred another brand]. Just seems a bit tacky that $199 for for 1 year of service I hopefully won't need in the first year (if you did the work correctly) doesn't cover that. So, about recommending, I'd give a friend a recommendation with a heavy dose of "but, if..."

    Good Solid Hard Drive Affordable

This drive is AMAZING for its intended purpose. It is not a very fast hard drive - This is not the sort of storage that you would want as your primary drive to pair with you new 'gaming rig' with top of the line graphics and CPU. It will work just fine, but you will need to wait a few seconds longer for Windows to start up and for video games to load than you may be used to. If you want a fast drive, either get a Solid State Drive or 'WD Desktop Performance' or 'WD Black' hard drive (but these will be more expensive per GB and will consumer more power, except for the SSD which consumes less power). This drive has five very good aspects - 1) It has a LOT of storage for the price, 2) It consumes less than half of the power of a standard HDD, 3) It is extremely reliable, 4) It is much quieter than a standard HDD, and 5) It produces a lot less heat than a standard HDD.

Bought the WD hard drive to replace a failing drive on my laptop. Easy to install for those who may be intimidated to replace a hard drive, as for me I have bought and replace HDD for different Laptops/PC. I did a fresh OS install for my laptop. So far, so good my laptop is working fine. WD does provide Acronis True image Software that you download free from WD website to clone your HDD that would save you the trouble of reinstalling a fresh OS install, but know that it will clone the HDD for only using in the same laptop or PC as a back up and it will save you the trouble of having to reinstall your programs. The price was fair and the availability in stock to buy the HDD in the store is good.

BASIC Laptop Drive, cheap for size

By 'basic' I mean this drive is a serviceable unit but lacks the speed one would desire. For older laptops, especially for something to salvage client data onto, this is fine. When replacing a laptop drive, check what the speed is on the drive you are replacing. You would be surprised how many, even newer laptops, are running pretty darn slow drives.........well, this would not speed up or slow down most mid to lower range laptops. If you have a fast laptop, you should really go with the PNY solid state drive. But when replacing a 5400 speed or more basic this is fine. Hey, building or rebuilding just a really basic desktop? These can make do just fine and are in-stock at more often than the smaller end of the desktop drives.

I have a macbook from early 2008 , it was slowing down and my memory filled up. I didnt want to back everythin up on an external hard drive & have to deal with that every time I needed an old file. So I was so excited when I found out I could install a larger internal hard drive. The process was easy. I backed everything up on my external hard drive, used the removal/installation procedures I found online, reinstalled my OS & then with a click of a few buttons put all my data, photos, docs & applications back on my computer. My computer is faster now & I wont have to worry about space again for years, I was so excited my computer will last me a few more years and it was such a cheap easy solution. I definitely recommend it, I had no problems at all.

    Upgrade over OEM Hard Drive

I purchased this hard drive after having two previous OEM hard drives fail on my HP lap top. The cost of the Mainstream unit was about $30 more than the replacement cost of another OEM hard drive, but it will be worth it if the unit doesn't fail. I travel a lot, and my lap top takes some unavoidable knocks & bumps. The HP OEM hard drives lasted about six months each. I store all my critical data separately, so the biggest problem with the hard drive failures has been the loss of my lap top for 2-3 weeks. One other advantage of the Mainstream unit is that it was installed by my local Geeksquad, in about 5 days as opposed to 2-3 weeks to have the lap top sent to HP Tech Service. If you've had the hard drive fail on your lap top, I'd recommend at least looking into this option.

My old laptop has these great Harmon Kardon speakers and I just wasn't in the mood to shop for a new home laptop when mine died of hard drive failure. The Geek Squad explained the installation process to me like I was a 5 year old....they made it that easy. Hard drive went in...turned it on... Windows 10 installed...Windows found all the driver's...I then went and got all my stuff which I had backed up on G Drive and like magic... I was back in business. $50 and some great free advice saved me $1000 replacing this laptop... which is now the "same as it ever was".

    Good Drive, Hidden Acronis

The drive seems very straightforward to physically install and use. No indication whatsoever is given in or on the box regarding where to find Acronis. The WD website is absolutely miserable. Searches result in piles of mostly useless results. Searching based on drive model number brings up no download results. Finally found it after about 15 minutes of frustration: htt p:// support.wdc.com/product/ downloaddetail.asp? swid=119&wdc_lang=en [remove spaces when pasting] Acronis, once finally installed, was easy and friendly to use. Note that to "clone", you'll need to have both old and new drives simultaneously connected to the computer which for laptops may require an external adapter.

Ok, so I got this for my PS4, because my current HDD died on me. After installing this brand new Hard drive that I picked up at the local best buy, the hard drive just hung. The PS4 could read it. It can making a loud swishing and click sound every 2 seconds. After a hour of troubleshooting we figured it was bad. Went back to bestbuy for a replacement which was very easy. Installed the new replaced Hard drive and it worked great. I was able to reinstall the PS4 OS and got everything up and running again.

This 500gb Hard drive saved a 2 year old laptop from the junk pile and provided a cheaper way for a college bound student to have access to a laptop than to buy a new one. I personally feel Western Digital makes one of the most dependable hard drives on the market. I have purchased more than 1000 hard drives in the course of my 20 years as an IT Professional and I would estimate at least half of them were Western Digital and I can remember about 8 or 9 times I had to return one within the first year because an issue caused by a straight up drive failure or manufacturer defect.

Worked right out of the box with no issues. I only trust WD nowadays. Seagates are a shot in the dark at best. WD just keep going. I am a technician that installs HDD several hundred times a year. I only trust WD blues or blacks when it comes to drives you can find in a local store. In the 1990s it was Maxtor. Today it is WD. But stay away from the green version. Also, when buying an external WD, be careful. Many times I have come across bad external WD hdd that were listed as blacks. Only to find a green drive on the inside of the external case.

Great option for replacing broken laptop HDD

The HDD on one of our laptops was damaged after being dropped, so I did some research for replacements on a budget. I decided on this one as it was not only within budget (under $60), it had twice the space of the old hard drive. Although it did not come with instructions on installation, just a recommendation for having it done by a professional. It was fairly straight forward - Remove the back cover, unscrew old HDD and switch it out. For those who may not know, you will need to install an operating system, such as Windows.

This drive failed only after 17 days of use. It was outside the return policy for Bestbuy but I was able to get it returned via RMA to WesternDigital. The new drive works so far. The replacement drive was sent fast and the money on hold on my CC was released quickly. I am an IT Specialist and have seen drives fail out of the box. It is bound to happen. It was easy for me to get it returned to WD and get a replacement with no issues.

I bought this because the hard drive on my laptop crashed and at about the same time,my flash drives were somehow wiped while they were packed up to move to our new house. I had no other back up and I lost hundreds of machine embroidery files. I tried to restore them, but some of them were purchased too long ago and the providers did not have the records on file anymore. Now with the portable hard drive, I feel more secure that my files are safe from future mishaps.

I have an extensive collection of cat pictures and this hard drive is able to store nearly all of them. The pictures are mostly of the cat star, but there are a few close ups of paws and other mighty fine feline parts. All very hi res images of at least 10 megapixel. You can really zoom in on the cat tongue doing its thing and the starry night with various asteroids. I figure I will need a 1 TB drive in the next couple of years because the cats expire after a long life and are replaced with new ones anc then the whole photo series has to start all over again.
