I'm using this to store backups for a few computers. 8TB handles full and incremental backups for three computers. Easy to use. I do not use their included backup software so I cannot address that functionality. I read a lot of reviews before buying this drive. When the drive is operating, it can be heard, but it's not that loud.

Solid and healthy drive, but quiet clicking sound

Pros: Easy to use.
Cons: Quiet clicking noise when idle (this is normal), no power switch on the chassis.
WD backup software is good for simple 'set and forget' users - pick the multiple drives or directories you want to back up and it will take care of them and regularly update them if you set a schedule. It's also easy to access your file backups without using the backup software because they are stored in a plain directory structure.
Drive is quiet overall, but has a regular subtle clicking sound when idle (I checked online and this is normal). This is annoying if you have a very quiet room, but fine for an office environment or if you are going to keep the drive far away from you. You also have to keep the drive upright without covering the top, for cooling purposes.
Because of the sound I keep the drive unplugged, but that's also inconvenient because there is no power switch.
Drive comes formatted as exFAT so you may wish to format it to NTFS if you want to use Windows image backup utilities.

As time goes on the drives get bigger and bigger but so does the amount of data one produces. This drive is a wonderful way to ensure that my precious memories from camera, video, audio and most importantly computers gets backed up without running out of space. This drive is large enough to back up all of my household computers with room to spare! No problems with heat, connectivity or data transfer. Quite useful for taking contents from multiple smaller disks and archiving them all to one location.

I use a lot of external storage to offload video and photography files, as well as a backup for invoices and data. I’ve gotten to where I have quite a few, and I bought this to start freeing up other drives. It’s worked very well, has a quick response time and takes up minimal space on my desk. I’ve found Western Digital to always be a reliable brand and this purchase is no exception.

I have been using these WD drives for a long time. This is actually the 28th I've purchased (I do a lot of editing of very large videos). They are always reliable and fast, and this one is no exception.
They did make two changes recently that are minor annoyances to me.
The first one is that they removed the light from the front. There are times when I'm running some long processing, and I liked being able to glance at the light, see it is blinking, and know that long background process is still going on. Can't do that any more, I now have to look at the computer screen and find the appropriate window to know. Because the disk is just a solid black box now with no indicators at all.
The second one is that it is slightly noisier than before. Low thumping sounds that they didn't used to have. Not a big deal at all, but noticeable.
Those are just minor annoyances, though. They're good drives.

I edit videos for TV commercials and web based advertising. People in my industry need external drives to store all types of media. This brand has proven to be reliable throughout the years. Glad to see the prices come down. As production resolution increases every few years, more terabytes are required for the same length of projects.

This external hard drive is easy to set up with my apple computer. It is fast. So I do like this part.
I cannot tell this is great product: first and minor complaint is that it is slightly loud. I can hear it next room at night time.
Second and more important issue is that, once in a while, I cannot see any content that I saved onto this. so I had to unplug the hard drive from computer, connect it back again, and I can see all the contents saved onto this external hard drive. It is little worrisome this happened that I cannot see any contents stored onto this hard drive. So I ended up saving some of the more important files onto some other hard drive. I wondered what caused it and if this should happened.
I have not owned external hard drive with this capacity so I cannot compare to other products. This one has lots of storage space so that is very good to store pictures and videos etc all on one hard drive.

The hard drive seems to be working very well. No complaints, yet, and I only bumped it down a star because it could be faster and because it makes a little sound now and then when it's reading the disk that I wonder about. At the price I paid, the slower speed was expected. The sound hopefully is nothing. Probably is nothing. And it isn't loud, just a little brrp brrp brrp every now and then. After transferring 5 TB of data to it, I didn't feel like returning it because of a little brrp brrp brrp.

I’m a gamer and subscribe to various services that over the years have put me on the receiving end of a big number of great digital games. Only problem was that my game consoles had very limited storage with which to store these games. Which meant to play the games I had collected I was forced to constantly determine which games I would favor to download onto my consoles. So I spent a lot of time downloading games and making the difficult decision of which one to delete. But thankfully now these huge external hard drives are reasonably price I feel like a kid in a candy shop. Only tough decision now is which game to play now.

I bought this to use with my PS4. Once I formatted it on PS4, my computer will not copy files to it (as backup to photos or videos) -this is due to Sony's format -Not because of the actual device . So only PS4 applications can be saved on it.. The reason i gave it four stars is because it is way louder than I anticipated. I also have a WD elite 2 TB external HDD. The elite is whisper quiet... But this 8 TB is not. It is not horribly loud, and I'm not sure how loud other 8 TB drives are, but I am a little annoyed about that. I would still recommend it because I feel WD products are durable, and they continue to push the envelope. If you use headphones or keep the volume high, the noise obviously will not be an issue.

I'm a photo hoarder. If I have one photo, I have ONE MILLION photos. I'm serious...I have A LOT of photos. Whether I'm scrapbooking, framing photos, or creating online albums, I need every single one of those photos. I scroll through the photos over and over again, but I worry about the safety of my photos. The question...What happens if I lose my photos? is not a rhetorical question. I've had two serious hard drive crashes. Looking at that blinking cursor and knowing that there is no way to access any of my photos was devastating. After a hard drive crash, I purchased an external hard drive. The WD MyBook 8TB External Hard Drive was easy to set up, easy to maintain, and easy to use. I highly recommend the WD MyBook 8TB External Hard Drive.

Overall it is a good hard drive. Between WD and the other company (that rhymes with teammate or rebate) you will always hear that some people have failed hard drives and many that don't so you can't use that as much of a deciding factor. On the outside, the hard drive looks good (I got black). It looks exactly as pictured with straight edges, no curves. It stands up, as pictured. I can't speak to speed and such, but it definitely moves my movies over very fast so I am pleased with that. Why 4 stars? This thing is ALWAYS falling asleep. It can't wait to sleep. So if it sits for a little bit without being used and you want to move something into/out of the drive or get to something in the drive, you have to wait for it to wake up. It is seconds (not minutes), but they are long seconds considering you just want to use it the way you would use any other drive. << This is what makes it very annoying. And then when it is waking up, it is so loud (like on an old tv show where someone is snoring and then they are awaken or disturbed from sleep and they are like "snort! snort! snort!"). You can hear the drive's spinning vibrations, loudly! Because of the sleep problem, I would have opted for the "other" brand, but this one was on sale.
I bought two drives and they are used to store all my dvds (I am still working on this). One is for movies (and the like) and the other is for tv shows (and the like). I connect them to my router. I used PLEX, so they are connected to my PLEX library. That annoying sleep problem comes into play here as well. If I choose to watch something in PLEX, which means I am using the drive for the first time in a moment, I have to wait for it to wake up (listening to that *rumble-snort-rumble*) before it does anything. The lack of it being instantaneous would have been a deal breaker, but the "other" one was not on sale, so.
I would still recommend it, but buy it knowing that it has been sleep deprived.
Peace.

I bought this to store additional games and media on my Playstation 4. There is plenty of room for everything. Even if you don’t have that much content to store on it, it is nice to have the space available for later. It makes it much easier to access games, especially if your console’s internal storage is already full. Setup is simple as the PS4 knows exactly how to format it to work properly. Overall, a nice investment for if you have a lot of games and don’t want to have to keep deleting and reinstalling things. Then if you don’t want to use it for that, just plug it into your computer and reformat it and you can use it for your PC files, just like that. It’s so easy and convenient. Worth the money.

Purchased this external hard drive to expand storage capabilities on an Xbox One. Plugged the drive in to one of the three Xbox USB 3.0 ports, followed the prompt to format the drive to store game data, and was ready to go. It was easy to move existing game data from the internal drive to the external drive. Note: You will need space on your power strip or electrical outlet to plug in the power adapter.
If you are using this drive with the Xbox One and use a lot of accessories that also need USB ports, you may want to buy a 4-port USB hub. I wasn't thinking about that when I bought this and had to pick one up later.

So I purchased this external drive after running out of storage space for my Ps4. I had a 2tb and a 4tb and drove me nuts unplugging one drive to use another. So I consolidated my huge library of games to my external and it’s perfect. No deleting games I’ve used a majority of the space but have a few gigs left to spare. It’s western digital so it’s a good quality in my opinion and it’s very quite. I have a glass entertainment center so I can hear a little bit but a must if you have a lot a games a little pricier but it gets the job done and I was lucky to enough to get a Ps5 and currently waiting for it to come in and it’s said to be compatible with the new console version which is Great news.
