I had a terrible time getting this hard drive to communicate with mac or pc. Within months much of my data was corrupted and the warranty can only offer you another mediocre hard drive

    Broke in a few months

This was my newest WD external hard drive and broke in less than half a year without any trauma and I lost all data and had to pay over 2 thousand dollars for recovery. I would avoid this at all costs and definitely back up all of your data. My other WD external hard drives (easystore rather than My Book) are older and still functional. Felt too unsafe to store data, completely unreliable and a waste of money.

I couldn't get it to connect to my computer correctly and then I was locked out and couldn't access the data when I tried to reconnect. Confusing instructions.

This external hard drive saved me $1,300. My computer technician proposed a $1,500 hard drive w/much less data capacity. Easy to use;plug and play!

Easy to install hard drive with lots of storage. One note of caution: format it as NTFS before loading data if using with a Windows system. It came formatted as exFAT which stopped my system from booting while it was connected. You can not convert this drive to NTFS without destroying the data on it.

Creative professionals need space and speed now more mobile than ever. Our cameras and computers are smaller, but what isn't smaller is data. Filming in RAW and UHD can make storage requirements incredible on certain projects. That storage can't be slow either because we can't be waiting all day for renders now can we? I have 2 of these monsters connected to my editing machine and they are lightening fast and super reliable.

I purchased this 8TB External Hard Drive being that I have a WD MyBook 4TB. However, after only 8 months, my drive will no longer pull up or let me access my files! I can with other externals so I know it's not my computer or cords etc.. . I am EXTREMELY upset about all of the time I spent transferring data to this new drive and for it to now be useless:(

This is a good drive and serves my purpose as a simple, large backup drive for my iMac desktop. I had a 3TB external drive that was getting full so wanted to upgrade to a larger one. I moved my old backups to this 8TB drive and still have plenty of space to keep going. I understand some people don't like the lack of lights, power switch and odd data connector, but those items don't bother me as I don't plan on turning it off, moving it, or closely monitoring data read/write. My only complaint is that it is noisier than my old drive and I can feel the slight hum/spin through my desk. Not horrible but I definitely notice it compared to my old drive. For the price it is a great upgrade from a smaller external HDD.

The hard drive seems to be working very well. No complaints, yet, and I only bumped it down a star because it could be faster and because it makes a little sound now and then when it's reading the disk that I wonder about. At the price I paid, the slower speed was expected. The sound hopefully isn'thing. Probably isn'thing. And it'sn't loud, just a little brrp brrp brrp every now and then. After transferring 5 TB of data to it, I didn't feel like returning it because of a little brrp brrp brrp.

I purchased a Western digital 8TB External drive to use as "Time Machine" backup drive with my iMac computer. After only three days I received a message stating "Time Machine Failed. Could not create backup folder." . I contacted Apple support and after multiple tech support sessions, it was suggested that the internal controller in the WD drive could be the probable cause. I reformatted the drive, erased the drive, REINSTALLED Mac OS High Sierra, all with no solution to the problem. I was told to return the drive to Best Buy and exchange it for a new drive, which I did. AGAIN, after only two days, the same error message began to appear. I then contacted Western Digital, and AGAIN the tech support rep had me erase all the data on the drive and reformat it again. The Time machine backup failed again with the same error message. I was told that my support ticket would be escalated to second tier support, and that I would be contacted by phone within 24 to 48 hours. I received an eMail from WD, stating that I had not replied to an eMail regarding my support ticket, and that the ticket would be closed if I did not reply. I did NOT receive a phone call, as I was initially told, so I contacted WD technical support again. Once again, the tech told me to erase the drive and reformat it. OK ... so I did. After two more days, the drive failed to back up Time Machine. Now I am back on the phone with WD tech support. A G A I N I am told that the ticket will be forwarded to level THREE support, and that I would be receiving a phone call ( YES A PHONE CALL) within another 24 to 48 hours. It has passed the second 48 hour period, and NO PHONE call, but I did receive another eMail stating that I had not responded to an earlier eMail set to me regarding this support ticket. IF I do not heard from Western Digital by 5 PM Friday February 23rd, I will return the second drive to Best Buy, and NEVER buy another Western Digital product again. So far, Western Digital has a very poor customer service rating.
