Overall great, no complaints
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my third WD external drive. No problems with the previous ones, just needed more storage capacity. I plugged this in to the computer, and began backing up not just the computer, but the other WD drive as well. The problem I do have with it, is it's loud and makes the desk vibrate, there is no light on it indicating it's actually doing anything, however from the noise it's easy to tell if it's working.

Massive storage space for reasonable price
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall this is a great buy. 8tb is a ton of space and $200 is very reasonable. I have had zero issues with Read or write speeds and although you can hear it working, it is not bothersome. My only complaint would be that it does go to sleep if unused. This hasn't been an issue other than it may take 30 seconds to get into a file if you haven't used the drive in a while. But it's not too bad and it doesn't disconnect or anything like that.

A Creative Must.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Creative professionals need space and speed now more mobile than ever. Our cameras and computers are smaller, but what isn't smaller is data. Filming in RAW and UHD can make storage requirements incredible on certain projects. That storage can't be slow either because we can't be waiting all day for renders now can we? I have 2 of these monsters connected to my editing machine and they are lightening fast and super reliable.

Good
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm not super tech savy, I bought this to add memory to my gaming laptop (to store my PC games). So far it works well! Once again I'm no which is why I gave it 4 stars out of 5, if there's something wrong with it I have no clue. I can get loud, but my laptop already gets loud when I fire up a game, doesn't bother me (I'm used to it). It helps that I got it on sale....

Great for back up
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I used this unit, to back up all my pictures and videos, that were taking too much space from my computer hard drive. I only wish it will have a LED or something to let you know when it's writing or reading. iTS very hard to know when it's actually working (reading or writing) It's fast also I ve been buying WD back up products for the last 10 years, AND NEVER HAD A SINGLE ONE FAILED on me.

Great deal for the peace of mind!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Plug and go, I did have to change the settings so this does not run constantly, but I'm glad to have a reliable backup plan for my older desktop setup. I can set a backup schedule and voila! Good size unit, not too big, it stands upright so it's out of the way. Feels well made, sturdy, good quality. Just plug in and go, super easy setup.

Good External Backup HD
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this external HD to backup photos. Easy to setup and is fast enough as a backup drive. I did not use the included backup software. It is third party and is overly complicated for my needs. I purchased an aftermarket solution online which simply backs up my pictures on demand.

Big, Strong and Affordable
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.USB 3.0 makes life easy. Super fast transfer vs. USB 2.0. I am a photographer and use this as a local back-up for all my shoots. It's big and will hold 1000s of RAW and JPGs plus PSD and additional files. Had it for two months. Had a number of WDs in the past and can't remember losing anything. I use this with Carbonite, and I feel safe, secure and ready to be backed-up for the rest of my life.

Always go with WD
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my fourth WD external hard drive. It is kind of loud at times and the transfer speeds are not that fast. It is reliable and holds plenty of movies. That is what I use it for

Good for Continuous Back-up but not Internal HDD
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I own several of these WD MyBook External HDDs. They were purchased for different reasons for professional and personal uses: to back-up digital art renderings; to back-up high definition CT scans; for the continuous back-up of files, folders and system restore images for personal and work computers, and to back-up digital photographs. These drives work well for backing up files and folders, and the included WD software is adequate for this purpose. However, these drives have a limited read/write cache and slower spin speeds than HDDs designed to support an operating system and software/apps. Therefore, if you are planning on shucking these drives to convert them to use as internal HDDs you may find you are wasting your time and money. Most drives used in external HDD applications are designed for CONTINUOUS back-up of a system, not the more demanding reading/writing functions associated with multiple applications use such as simultaneously web browsing, editing artwork, editing video files, or accessing and editing large database files (e.g. Access, Excel). If you take anything away from this review it should be this: Continuous back-up and storage of files, folders, system images = good to very good. Conversion to use as internal HDD = expect shortened lifespan of the drive and limited performance, just go ahead and buy a drive labeled and designed for internal use. I gave four stars because the included software could be somewhat better.
