I don't recommend this product if you are the multitasking type of user. Firstly, the only way this product works is if you plug in both connections (one that looks like a old Motorola Droid charger and the other connection looks like a Samsung Note charger). Due to this product having two chords instead of one like SanDisk has in order for their products to work, I'm constantly tripping over it and have even dropped my laptop three times now (lucky for me it was at couch level so it didn't do too much damage to my laptop but still there is absolutely no need for two chords to be plugged in at the same time in order for the product to run SMH). It also effects your computer startup while plugged into your computer during the start up (the result you're going to get is as if your start up froze, you'll get that continuous wheel if you own a mac or downloading like bar if you own a PC. The only way around this is if you wait until your computer start up is finished and then plug in the two chords). It also isn't user friendly in the sense that it will freeze your computer or Internet or both when you're on internet especially if you have multiple windows or programs up (the result you get is finding out that the programs or pages that you are running have the "Not Responding" error message located next to your program(s) name or page(s) name on the same bar where you can exit out of your program. When this happens the only way around this without having to shut down your computer and loose your work is if you press Ctrl, atl, del in order to start your task manager and get out of the windows you're in only to have to reopen them and hopefully not have to do this again for a while, but sometimes this method doesn't even work. If it doesn't work then the last resort is you're forced to completely exit out of everything that's running including the work you're doing such as a school essay which isn't good if you haven't saved that essay or even if you have and you open it up again, you will only see the last time it saved so regardless you lost your work one way or another). In addition this product is ridiculously loud even when you're not using it but it's still plugged in (I would be on internet and at times hear the product. It's like the sound a computer makes when it's over working and starting to heat up, as if like the fan of the product is overworking so it doesn't overheat kind of sound I guess??? Idk it's difficult to explain but it definitely is the sound of a fan of some sort). Lastly, the directions of how to take care of the product (such as the temperature it can be in, what kind of plugs it shouldn't be in, the voltages the product can't handle, etc, etc) is written on a 2"X2" paper and the words are so small that even a person like myself who has 20/20 vision can't see it unless they use a magnify glass and even then it's still difficult to see. The directions (5"x8" about pamphlet) of how to use the product are also useless imo. The only pros to this product is it's easy to transfer your files into and you don't need to format it, that is if you're a PC owner. I'm not sure if this is the case with Mac users sorry. As stated before I definitely do not recommend this product especially to multitasking type of users.

I purchased a Western digital 8TB External drive to use as "Time Machine" backup drive with my iMac computer. After only three days I received a message stating "Time Machine Failed. Could not create backup folder.". I contacted Apple support and after multiple tech support sessions, it was suggested that the internal controller in the WD drive could be the probable cause. I reformatted the drive, erased the drive, REINSTALLED Mac OS High Sierra, all with no solution to the problem. I was told to return the drive to Best Buy and exchange it for a new drive, which I did. AGAIN, after only two days, the same error message began to appear. I then contacted Western Digital, and AGAIN the tech support rep had me erase all the data on the drive and reformat it again. The Time machine backup failed again with the same error message. I was told that my support ticket would be escalated to second tier support, and that I would be contacted by phone within 24 to 48 hours. I received an eMail from WD, stating that I had not replied to an eMail regarding my support ticket, and that the ticket would be closed if I did not reply. I did NOT receive a phone call, as I was initially told, so I contacted WD technical support again. Once again, the tech told me to erase the drive and reformat it. OK ... so I did. After two more days, the drive failed to back up Time Machine. Now I am back on the phone with WD tech support. A G A I N I am told that the ticket will be forwarded to level THREE support, and that I would be receiving a phone call ( YES A PHONE CALL) within another 24 to 48 hours. It has passed the second 48 hour period, and NO PHONE call, but I did receive another eMail stating that I had not responded to an earlier eMail set to me regarding this support ticket. IF I do not heard from Western Digital by 5 PM Friday February 23rd, I will return the second drive to Best Buy, and NEVER buy another Western Digital product again. So far, Western Digital has a very poor customer service rating.

Open the box and you'll find a 2x3 piece of paper with microprint titled Instructions. Installing the software is easy, unfortunately reading them is an exercise in futility. There should be an explanation of the available features recommended for your needs - there isn't. I would have expected a clear users manual that gave a workflow with "for this/that do this/that", the maker thinks you have a day or two to play around. It took Columbus weeks to discover America, it took me 3 days to get the RAID configuration working right!. Oh, and by the way, it is slow. Still searching for answers.

We bought this Hard Drive to put all our files from other hard drives so it will be on one drive ....after transferring files the hard drive just quit and the files were lost ...we took this back and it was within the 30 days and exchanged it for another ...well the next one was also bad with loud clicking ....I was thankful I took out the warranty as we had to take this one back also ....we have now bought a different hard drive and have good luck with this one ....I would not recommend buying this one as we lost a lot of files that can't be replaced .

Overall significantly disappointing, processes slow, loads slow, and seems to be loaded down already being brand new. I'm usually a firm believer in WD and their externals, but after this being my 5th one and each of them slow down quickly, and this one being new and the worst, I'm not happy. It's a good price and a good amount of storage, but it's almost not worth it due to the slow/sluggy-ness.

Have had the unit for a month+. It works, and the auto-encryption is super, but if want your drive to there all day every day, move on! You have to pull power on this unit at least 3 times a day (full day of use), for your system to recognize it and allow you to access it properly. It will show you the contents but no go on access/delete/add until a power cycle. Then ok most times. Had to do a system check and it found errors (repaired them). I'm done.

Drive worked perfectly we had it on a high-end surge protector so we are not sure what killed it. Frankly it's a 8 TB mechanical disk it's going to have a high rate of failure. My suggestion would be to get the MyBook Duo same manufacturer more expensive but it's 2 x 4 TB disks and seems to be more stable. We are returning our now deak book after transferring 3.7 TB of data to it and picking up a second My Book Duo.

I'm using this drive, essentially as a backup drive, and I've been using it for about a week. This week, out of the blue I got a windows error that "the drive was damaged, click here to scan and repair" or something to that effect. Not what one would expect from a drive that is this new and has been used so little. I've had drives that have gone years of much heavier use that have had no such problems.

I bought this drive. Plugged it into windows 10 computer, but it wouldn't recognize it. Downloaded drivers. That didn't help; Tried the same on a very new PC win 10 and it didn't work there either. Went to product website for assistance. WD realliy doesn't offer technical support and their knowledge database doesn't provide answers. I will return this to the store and buy another product from a different manufacturer. These things should be simple and work and there should be customer support.

    Broke in a few months

This was my newest WD external hard drive and broke in less than half a year without any trauma and I lost all data and had to pay over 2 thousand dollars for recovery. I would avoid this at all costs and definitely back up all of your data. My other WD external hard drives (easystore rather than My Book) are older and still functional. Felt too unsafe to store data, completely unreliable and a waste of money.

Because I am in the process of scanning negatives and transparencies taken during my first 30 years of photography, the WD My Book 8TB External USB Hard Drive is a great asset. Whether personally scanned or scanned by my lab, all scans are Hi-res. The WD My Book 8TB External USB Hard Drive seems to have an endless capacity.

I purchased this 8TB External Hard Drive being that I have a WD MyBook 4TB. However, after only 8 months, my drive will no longer pull up or let me access my files! I can with other externals so I know it’s not my computer or cords etc... I am EXTREMELY upset about all of the time I spent transferring data to this new drive and for it to now be useless:(

I bought this external hard drive to store all my digital media as my library continues to grow I need more space. Well it's only been a few months since the purchase and the device no longer works and has lost all the digital media I had stored on it. It's very disappointing that I could spend so much on a product that fails so quickly and loses all of my tv shows and movies. Would definitely not recommend

Cannot leave this drive plugged into any USB port in your computer. Your computer will stall when trying to boot until this drive must be unplugged to get your computer up again. It can be plugged in and used once the computer is up only.
