Overall it is a good hard drive. Between WD and the other company (that rhymes with teammate or rebate) you will always hear that some people have failed hard drives and many that don't so you can't use that as much of a deciding factor. On the outside, the hard drive looks good (I got black). It looks exactly as pictured with straight edges, no curves. It stands up, as pictured. I can't speak to speed and such, but it definitely moves my movies over very fast so I am pleased with that. Why 4 stars? This thing is ALWAYS falling asleep. It can't wait to sleep. So if it sits for a little bit without being used and you want to move something into/out of the drive or get to something in the drive, you have to wait for it to wake up. It is seconds (not minutes), but they are long seconds considering you just want to use it the way you would use any other drive. << This is what makes it very annoying. And then when it is waking up, it is so loud (like on an old tv show where someone is snoring and then they are awaken or disturbed from sleep and they are like "snort! snort! snort!"). You can hear the drive's spinning vibrations, loudly! Because of the sleep problem, I would have opted for the "other" brand, but this one was on sale. I bought two drives and they are used to store all my dvds (I am still working on this). One is for movies (and the like) and the other is for tv shows (and the like). I connect them to my router. I used PLEX, so they are connected to my PLEX library. That annoying sleep problem comes into play here as well. If I choose to watch something in PLEX, which means I am using the drive for the first time in a moment, I have to wait for it to wake up (listening to that *rumble-snort-rumble*) before it does anything. The lack of it being instantaneous would have been a deal breaker, but the "other" one was not on sale, so. I would still recommend it, but buy it knowing that it has been sleep deprived. Peace.

Good for Continuous Back-up but not Internal HDD

I own several of these WD MyBook External HDDs. They were purchased for different reasons for professional and personal uses: to back-up digital art renderings; to back-up high definition CT scans; for the continuous back-up of files, folders and system restore images for personal and work computers, and to back-up digital photographs. These drives work well for backing up files and folders, and the included WD software is adequate for this purpose. However, these drives have a limited read/write cache and slower spin speeds than HDDs designed to support an operating system and software/apps. Therefore, if you are planning on shucking these drives to convert them to use as internal HDDs you may find you are wasting your time and money. Most drives used in external HDD applications are designed for CONTINUOUS back-up of a system, not the more demanding reading/writing functions associated with multiple applications use such as simultaneously web browsing, editing artwork, editing video files, or accessing and editing large database files (e.g. Access, Excel). If you take anything away from this review it should be this: Continuous back-up and storage of files, folders, system images = good to very good. Conversion to use as internal HDD = expect shortened lifespan of the drive and limited performance, just go ahead and buy a drive labeled and designed for internal use. I gave four stars because the included software could be somewhat better.

Grand capacity, cheaper than an internal drive

I purchased this drive with the express purpose of opening up the case to remove the internal drive to put into a desktop Mac. Anyone else looking to do something similar, you'd be crazy to buy a bare internal drive for they cost much more for the same type of drive. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing how to pop open these drives. This one in particular is insanely easy with a few tools (compared to some I've dismantled). As an external drive, it's as one may expect. It's plug and play with a Mac. Reformat or not, delete the included software. If you're setting up a backup for your Mac use Time Machine or a third party backup application. It has a USB 3.1 micro-B 10 pin on the drive (that's the two loop, smashed "B" looking connector). I'll note that though it's part of the MyBook line of externals that it is squared off. Nice drive but no longer emulates the look of an actual book. Though my purchase was for the greater capacity drive I did put an older, smaller capacity drive in the enclosure and use it as it's meant to be. I have no issues with it. I'd recommend as is or if you're looking to dismantle. One note: my aging Mac Pro has issues recognizing the high capacity drive sometimes when installed, HOWEVER, reading any drive from the enclosure works fine (only slower due to external and spin up time for the platters).

    Nice Hardware, but…

The hardware is great, were designed and ready to use out of the box. However, Having it ready to use out of the box also presents issues: my intent was to attach it to the router as a media server for the network. But the router doesn't work with ex-FAT formatting; which given the router is running a version of Linux (Linksys WRT 1900 ACS) is not surprising. It would have been much more convenient to have a setup option to select the format or (better yet) read the system characteristics and recommend a format. So, the router didn't work in native format. I found o format it wanted and reformatted the drive to EXT2 and it will work OK but I can't place it behind the firewall. So I attach it to the Win10 Pro box via USB3 after reformatting it to NTSF exFAT and now the system cycles through the reboot cycle infinitely: clearly Win10 is not happy with an NTSF exFAT 8TB USB drive. I managed to fix that, but it required another reformat into Fat32 which Win10 then mounts as GPT. Really a bit much to set the thing up. I'd still recommend it but a caveat that Win10 might get a bit snarky about it depending on your BIOS and other drive configurations. Also, don't expect to be plug 'n play into a router or a NAS system: they probably want something other than the default formatting.

This is a good drive and serves my purpose as a simple, large backup drive for my iMac desktop. I had a 3TB external drive that was getting full so wanted to upgrade to a larger one. I moved my old backups to this 8TB drive and still have plenty of space to keep going. I understand some people don't like the lack of lights, power switch and odd data connector, but those items don't bother me as I don't plan on turning it off, moving it, or closely monitoring data read/write. My only complaint is that it is noisier than my old drive and I can feel the slight hum/spin through my desk. Not horrible but I definitely notice it compared to my old drive. For the price it is a great upgrade from a smaller external HDD.

I bought this to use with my PS4. Once I formatted it on PS4, my computer will not copy files to it (as backup to photos or videos) -this is due to Sony's format -Not because of the actual device . So only PS4 applications can be saved on it.. The reason i gave it four stars is because it is way louder than I anticipated. I also have a WD elite 2 TB external HDD. The elite is whisper quiet... But this 8 TB is not. It is not horribly loud, and I'm not sure how loud other 8 TB drives are, but I am a little annoyed about that. I would still recommend it because I feel WD products are durable, and they continue to push the envelope. If you use headphones or keep the volume high, the noise obviously will not be an issue.

Purchased this external hard drive to expand storage capabilities on an Xbox One. Plugged the drive in to one of the three Xbox USB 3.0 ports, followed the prompt to format the drive to store game data, and was ready to go. It was easy to move existing game data from the internal drive to the external drive. Note: You will need space on your power strip or electrical outlet to plug in the power adapter. If you are using this drive with the Xbox One and use a lot of accessories that also need USB ports, you may want to buy a 4-port USB hub. I wasn't thinking about that when I bought this and had to pick one up later.

Easy to connect and use and natively works on Macs. It is very quiet in operation and powers on/off with the computer and can be set up for sleep mode. Downsides: It has a proprietary (USB) connector cable so you don't want to lose or forget to keep the cable with the drive. Also there is no power light or indicator so you don't know if it's powered on unless you look on the computer. Also, you will need to use the provided (installed on drive) WD tools instead of the Mac Disk Utility app to manage some functions - not sure about PC's. Despite the noted downside issues it's a very good drive - I've bought a few of them for various computers we have and wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

This unit has excellent storage capacity for the price. I do have a bit of an issue that is yet unresolved. It may be a problem on my end, but my computer doesn't recognize it on startup unless I boot with the unit unplugged. Boot, then plug it in and it works fine. It's probably just so huge it overwhelms my system. It's a little slow to wake up at times, but once it does its plenty fast to play video but editing is slower. I would not use it for storing something I'm working on, only finished products. Overall, it's a decent drive and I'm sure my problems are on my end as I am using a computer I built 5 years ago, so, ol girl's got some miles on her. I'd still buy it again!

Purchased this drive while on a weekly sale. Great drive for the price. I prefer WD drives over other brands. This WD drive was priced similarly to the Seagate Drive of the same size. Drive is easy to use, fast, and has plenty of available space. I do not like the USB 3.0 cable that is used for the connection to the back of the drive. I have an older WD 3.0 Drive that has a regular USB 3.0 cable connection. This one uses the smaller connection that doesn't like to stay in as well. The Drive is also quite a bit louder than some of my other WD drives. I think this might be attributed to the 8TB size. Overall, this is a good value for the money.

I have never been let down when it comes to WD products. And had this one met my needs I am sure I would have been happy. Unfortunately, this product did not meet my demands. I needed a large storage space to do full system backups on 5 desktops and 2 laptops and accessible through my network. This product is suggested for only one computer thus making it difficult to backup others. It would not work the way I wanted it to even making it a shared device on the network. I took it back and ordered the WD 8tb My Cloud drive. This has the features I need and I am happy. I cannot fault the drive as I did not understand its limitations.

Removed one star because there is no power switch or light to control the UAB drive. It has a reasonable fast transfer speed. Runs quite and cool without fan. I bought this USB drive to store Acronis backups and other general files. I have it connected UAB 3.0 to a WD MYCLODEX2ULTRA network drive. It shows up as a Share and works fine. I'm old and wanted to have a lot of my file portable in case have to leave home with out WiFi. IT's big enough to hole what ever you need to move with you. And connected this way it is out of the way.

Drive looks nice on the desk and 8TB for around 200 is a pretty good deal. I actually purchased this more for the internal drive, which I did remove to use in another system. The internal drive has a generic label, but based on performance and other reviews, it appears to be a WD Blue (the days of NAS or HGST He drives for $200 are over i'm afraid). Note that the SATA/USB adapter board will need to be modded if using the enclosure with any other drive besides the one included. If you're just looking for an external drive with high capacity, it's just fine- fairly quiet and a good price.

The hard drive seems to be working very well. No complaints, yet, and I only bumped it down a star because it could be faster and because it makes a little sound now and then when it's reading the disk that I wonder about. At the price I paid, the slower speed was expected. The sound hopefully is nothing. Probably is nothing. And it isn't loud, just a little brrp brrp brrp every now and then. After transferring 5 TB of data to it, I didn't feel like returning it because of a little brrp brrp brrp.

The WD 8TB drive works as advertised. I only have on issue with the two that I have purchased so far. They are formatted as exFAT. I only use them with NTSF formatting, so I have to do a quick format to change it. All the previous drives I have purchased from WD were NTFS. Not sure why they are sending them our as exFAT now. It was disappointing to find out after I had put information the first one that it was not working properly. But, now I know to check them before writing info to them....

I have been using it with the PS4 since external HD support was recently implemented. It is working with no issues. I do not find it noisy and it is fast enough. I docked one star because it has no external drive light and I like to be able to see hard drive activity. I should point out many people do not like a drive light and find it distracting. So for you fguys-5 stars

I have 2 4TB drives in this same series (using one to back up my Qnap NAS). I needed this 8TB to back u my growing data on the NAS. Works good and USB3.0 FAST.. The proprietary USB cable is included - and the only really NEGATIVE thing about these models (maybe so its to deter using a normal USB cable that is TOO LONG to ensure proper data transfer..? idk ?)

I really prefer the WD HDD product line. They hold up for years and never have had problems with it. This hard drive has great capacity and a sturdy encasing. However the downside of this item is that it has no Led (light) indicator. How would I know if it is on or operating correctly, before looking at a screen (TV, monitor).

It didn't require anything special on my computer to use and you can just navigate though the file explorer in Windows, create folders and use the copy/paste functions. I don't like the fact that needs to be plugged in to the power to be used, so consider to have a connection available.

I use this on my Xbox One X as my mass storage for games that I don't play as often. It is a little noisier than my old 4TB MyBook, but nothing that would distract from a movie. Load times are on par with the internal drive, and I use a separate 512GB SSD external for faster loads. WD drives have never let me down, and I expect this to last for many years to come.
