This model is the current generation of the My Book line of desktop drives. I've owned older models and purchased them for clients. When 4TB would suffice more often I've gotten My Passport drives. They are much more compact and do not require an external power adapter. My Book drives have proven reliable and good performers in my experience. They have incrementally improved across generations. This model features a new case design which most notably replaced the rounded case that has been the norm since the original models years ago. The new case isn't attractive for me but it should have little effect on use. The MyBook drives are not just for computers, but great on game consoles. A friend and I put one on his Xbox One. We just plugged in the power, plugged in the USB and followed the prompts on screen to reformat the drive as external storage. Easy Peasy. BOTTOM LINE (for the impatient): The new model is a little bit faster than the last one I got a couple of years ago. It's faster than a similar My Passport drive, perhaps an advantage with the physically larger drive. This model (I got the 6TB size) is available in sizes up to 8TB. A pretty massive amount of storage on a USB drive! This drive shines with sequential reads and writes using Crystal DiskMark. This My Book has a new design that replaces rounded corners with pointy ones and adds some odd (to me) styling to the case. The new case shows fingerprints and scratches much more than the old. It's a purely aesthetic change. If these differences are not important for you or you prefer the old model's aesthetics, you may want to shop for the older model My Book. If you want more details, read on... SUMMARY: The My Book USB 3.0 drives are simple to use and come with reasonable software tools and backup/sync software. The drive includes: WD Backup, WD Security and WD Drive Utilities. I have my own backup solution and have not explored this software. If these are of interest, be sure to check for newer versions on the WD web site. Pluses: + This drive works fine with Windows, Linux or Mac out of the box. With Linux or Mac it performs best when reformatted with a native file system for the respective operating system. + This generation has 8TB, 6TB, 4TB and 3TB single drive models. Dual drive 12TB and 16TB models are available too. + This drive is faster than the last generation I used. Just noticeable in practical use. + The form factor of the new drive is almost exactly the same as before except for pointy corners. + It comes with a 4ft USB 3.0 cable (much nicer than the very short My Passport cables!) Minuses: - A power adapter is required. Happily it has a 6ft cord which is thoughtfully long. - The redesign of the drive case is not a plus for me. Not much of a minus either as it's not why I selected this drive. The worst thing is going with pointy corners. From a handling perspective rounded corners are nicer. - The warranty has been reduced from 3 years for last year's model to 2 years for this one. IN THE BOX: The My Book comes in a easy to open retail package containing the drive, power adapter and USB 3.0 cable. There are a couple small pieces of paper for warranty and quick-start. That's it. TESTING: I tested My Book 6TB model using CrystalDiskMark benchmark software and by copying 11GB folder of updates and files to the drive. This was to compare the benchmark with real-world copying. The 11GB folder has a broad mix of file sizes and types including files an over 2GB iso DVD images. For my testing the My Book drive was connected to the Renasas USB 3.0 chip set on my Dell Precision E6500 laptop. I have the latest Renasas drivers installed. The laptop also has a Samsung EVO SSD as the hard drive (matters for my real-world copy testing). CRYSTALDISKMARK Results: Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 173.515 MB/s Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 172.732 MB/s Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 0.666 MB/s [ 162.6 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 2.334 MB/s [ 569.8 IOPS] Sequential Read (T= 1) : 172.583 MB/s Sequential Write (T= 1) : 168.193 MB/s Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.595 MB/s [ 145.3 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 2.272 MB/s [ 554.7 IOPS] Test : 1024 MiB [F: 0.0% (0.2/5589.0 GiB)] (x9) [Interval=5 sec] REAL WORLD COPY: In my real world copy test the new My Book drive was noticeably faster than the older My Book. More on the writing than reading side. It peaked out at about 300MB/s with large files. It never dropped below 180MB/s even with large amounts of small files being copied to the drive. The newer drive may have a larger on-drive write cache or maybe it's just a bit faster drive. Maybe both. With big copies the new My Book may save you a few seconds here or there, but it's an evolution across models with each new one performing a little better. CONCLUSIONS: The My Book line of drives from Western Digital has been very good over the years to me and to my clients. This reliable and good to excellent performing line has a long positive history with me. This WD My Book model is an evolution over the older models I've used. I'll pick it for new purchases over the older model, but won't rush out to replace older drives. The new case design is not aesthetically pleasing to me . Overall it's a excellent successor to a 5 star predecessor and continues to be a very good external storage choice. For making improvements that outweigh a small misstep in case design and not making a mess of something that has been working well for a long time This new generation of My Book drives is worth 5 stars in my opinion. Hope this helps someone!

I originally bought a 8 TB external that I believed would work with the PS4 Pro unfortunately that was not the case. So figured I would try this out, a employee recommended this unit that he has on his PS4 Pro and it worked like a charm. Went home hooked it up to the back USB port on PS4 Pro connected it to the External Hard Drive, let it sit for a sec then plugged in the power for the external hard drive (yes, this external hard drive needs power adapter to work) and boom. After about 1 minute or 2 the PS4 Pro recognized it, so I was already impressed, last one I tried didn’t even recognize it after about 10 minutes or so. After the message appeared in top left (external hard drive detected) (give or take message being a little off on wording I suppose). Then I went through proper setting via PlayStation website (super easy) and let the PS4 Pro format the drive to work. Now I can say I have a 8TB hard drive on it and room for all the games I need. Make sure your PlayStation is up to date, version 6.20 is what mine is on. Thanks WD, made my night. Game on friends!

I personally think these were great investments. I bought one for my PS4 and another as a backup storage for my desktop and laptop. I downloaded my entire PS4 library onto one of these beasts and moved any games I'm currently playing onto the system HD. Then I unplug this until I need to access it. Pros: 1) You will never fill this up! 2) You can play games directly off this thing! 3) It's surprisingly quick for being so massive. 4) See pro #1! Negatives: 1) You can't use PS4's remote play or 2) PS4's auto/remote download when this is set as your primary storage (which is why I disconnect it when not using it). 3) The fan gets a little loud if its been on a while and starts to heat up (I played some games directly off the ext hd & discovered that). 4) You can't use this as an external HD for a PS4 AND a computer.

I have been using these WD drives for a long time. This is actually the 28th I've purchased (I do a lot of editing of very large videos). They are always reliable and fast, and this one is no exception. They did make two changes recently that are minor annoyances to me. The first one is that they removed the light from the front. There are times when I'm running some long processing, and I liked being able to glance at the light, see it is blinking, and know that long background process is still going on. Can't do that any more, I now have to look at the computer screen and find the appropriate window to know. Because the disk is just a solid black box now with no indicators at all. The second one is that it is slightly noisier than before. Low thumping sounds that they didn't used to have. Not a big deal at all, but noticeable. Those are just minor annoyances, though. They're good drives.

WD MyBook 8TB External Hard Drive

I'm a photo hoarder. If I have one photo, I have ONE MILLION photos. I'm serious...I have A LOT of photos. Whether I'm scrapbooking, framing photos, or creating online albums, I need every single one of those photos. I scroll through the photos over and over again, but I worry about the safety of my photos. The question...What happens if I lose my photos? is not a rhetorical question. I've had two serious hard drive crashes. Looking at that blinking cursor and knowing that there is no way to access any of my photos was devastating. After a hard drive crash, I purchased an external hard drive. The WD MyBook 8TB External Hard Drive was easy to set up, easy to maintain, and easy to use. I highly recommend the WD MyBook 8TB External Hard Drive.

I Purchased 3 to replace 5TB ones that are 3 years old and I couldn't be happier. This is just like having an internal HDD sitting outside of your computer. If you are using USB 3.0 it is ridiculously FAST! =) If you are moving large amount of data over to it use software or an imaging program that will verify the data was copied over successfully. Also, keep in mind they do tend to get very warm with heavy usage but that is true of all HDD's. This is NOT a backup system... don't treat it as such. Keep a copy of important things somewhere else. ALL HDD (INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL) CAN SUDDENLY STOP FUNCTIONING, THEY ARE ALL MECHANICAL DEVICES THAT CAN EVENTUALLY FAIL. I keep a copy of things at a different location just to be safe. It is cheaper and faster then paying for Data Recovery. -Richard

I chose to remove the drive from the enclosure so that I could use it in my server. Please note that did does void the warranty of the enclosure but on WD's warranty checker site the drive comes up as having 3 yrs warranty by it's serial #. If you choose to remove the drive, you will either need to cut the Orange wire on the sata power cable (Be sure to insolate the wire ends so as not to short out) or use a molex to Sata adapter (Recommended). This drive conforms to the new Sata standard which replaces the 3.3v line with a Reset. If you use the normal sata power connector then the drive goes into a constant state of Reset and will not work. I've had this for about a month now.

This drive is great and is fairly fast with transfers. There is a strange new louder noise with this drive but after reading about it, the noise comes from the different seek techniques that WD uses with the larger TB hard drives and the new Helium filled drives. This is a great drive for that backup that you have set to just auto backup every week (You do have that setup right?) so that in the event of a tragedy you can get back to where you need to be fast. This also allows you (if ever needed) to have a back up copy of everything that you can take with you at a moments notice if in a disaster zone and need to evacuate.

So far so good. We purchased this to expand the memory of our PS4 Pro and it works perfectly. This listing used to state it were exfat and now I am not seeing that in the description. Either way it formatted in mere moments and worked great from then on. Our games save directly to the PS4 itself, while actual games and updates are on this external hard drive. No, you still need the discs to play, for anyone wondering, but our reason for purchase was to be able to fit the games we own and their updates. PS4 just does not have enough memory on it's own.

OK, so Ive already transferred 62Tbs of Data from this little 8Tb external HDD and I have No complains. While hoked up via USB 3.0 I average about 175mbs transfer speed and Ive literally used this to collect the .mkv files from ripping my home Blu-Rays onto my home server. Its been handling so much data transfer and running at an average of 16-18 ours a day for 2 weeks straight to achieve this.. I’m impressed and its the biggest bang for the buck at 8tbs external HHD standalone period!

As with any larger external drive, there's some minor vibration (depending on the type of surface it's sitting on) when it's running. I replace the factory pads on the bottom with thicker self-adhesive foam or cork pads, which are far more effective than rubber in reducing noise and vibration. The drive can be password protected with built-in 256-bit AES hardware encryption, and comes with good backup software if you want to use it that way.

This is the fourth WD drive I've purchased over the years and this one hopefully will be as reliable as all the others. My oldest one (maybe 10 yrs old) does hiccup once in a while and has lost data because of power surges, but now that it's on an APU it still works great. I use this new unit for both backup and data storage for four computers and two external drives, and it still has plenty of room left over. I am pretty certain that this one will be as reliable as the others that I have, and I'd definitely buy another one of these when the need arises.

The drive was needed for an immediate need for work. It was convenient to order online and pay, but when sent someone else to go pick it up it took them a long time to find the order. (Not an issue with the USB drive of course.) We needed a drive with at least 8TB f storage and this one fit the bill. No issues what-so-ever in using the device. Once data was stored on the device it needed to be shipped to Chicago and arrived intact. We'll be using the same drive for the same need again.

I bought this because the then in use HD was on the verge of failing. I needed to transfer what was on a 3TB model before it was lost AND have sufficient room for future storage. I saw this model while in store and decided to buy it. I've used the products before and trust it. The storage size was right, the unit was on sale, and, as always, I knew that BestBuy stands by their sales. Operationally, it is plug and go. I haven't had any problems with it. If you need a massive amount of storage for a great price then consider buying this.

Inside this external enclosure is a superb white label WD 8TB hard drive with 256MB of cache that is as good or better than an 8TB WD Red. With this drive you get increased data density for about the cost of a retail hard drive half its size. In my server, this drive runs at about 20 C. I've read reports of external drives running much hotter in the external enclosures supplied by the manufacturer, but shucked and placed in a server, these drives run very cool.

As time goes on the drives get bigger and bigger but so does the amount of data one produces. This drive is a wonderful way to ensure that my precious memories from camera, video, audio and most importantly computers gets backed up without running out of space. This drive is large enough to back up all of my household computers with room to spare! No problems with heat, connectivity or data transfer. Quite useful for taking contents from multiple smaller disks and archiving them all to one location.

When I saw the sale price for this item when I bought it I was sure it was either a misprint or that I was buying something that would have a very short lifespan. I have had it since before I have had my XBOX one X and it works both on XBOX ONE and XBOX ONE X with no issues. I wish I would have bought two at the price they were but I haven't seen them for that cheap since.

I have been using WD disk drives for years and this unit My Book 8TB USB3.0 is ideal, in my case for backing up my data. I have several NAS's at home that backup data from all computers at home.... in this case, the My Book 8TB USB 3.0 was used to backup the backup servers. It is a REAL plug-and-play. No need to format the unit.... perhaps the only thing that I missed, compared to other WD external drives I own is a led light indicating that the drive is on.

With my old drive full and unable to perform any more backups, I knew it was time to upgrade and obtain more capacity for my large collection of photos, music and documents. The WD drive set up quickly and the Support staff was very helpful in walking me through the software launch. It has already performed multiple backups with room to spare and no issues at all. Most pleased with this purchase and the help from Best Buy and WD.

So I was waiting For the PlayStation update for the longest, I had all this games and I had to keep deleting them because my PS4 fills up so fast, and every time I wanted to play I had to wait for it to download. This was perfect after the update, I went with the 8 TB, and now I don't have to worry about space anymore and play all the games whenever I want or movies and music.
