    Somewhat confused

When my old computer was dying it was recommended that I look into this "Passport" for large backup, rather than use multiple ("thumb") flash drives. So, when I was at the store to look at a new computer, I did purchase this. One of the selling points for me was that the storage is equal to that of the computer, so there would definitely be enough space to hold all necessary going forward. I'd never used one and found it far more confusing than a flash drive. It gave directions to register, download a program, and set up scheduled download times. This took quite some time. I then wasn't sure I was properly giving instructions to back up the folders I needed to hold for transfer to new computer. I had to leave it run for hours; and when I re-checked it seemed to be done. It cited the amount of space used, but no indication that all my transfers had been successful. I didn't like the "lack of communication." This is often the case today when someone does not have previous familiarity with task at hand. An online instruction guide was available, but having to go back and forth, scrolling to the correct page for instructions then returning to processing screen was very tiresome and confusing. Not feeling at all secure, I decided to do some transfers to my regular flash drives as well, but I ran out of time, as my installation was scheduled to begin. After I transferred everything from the Passport to the new computer, I found that some important folders had NOT transferred. I don't know why -- very possibly my own error, since I didn't understand what I was doing. Fortunately, I'd kept my not-quite-dead old computer handy, hooked that back up, and did another transfer to flash drives, and successfully downloaded the missing files....well, most of them: for some reason Dropbox would not transfer and I had to put it onto my desktop instead. With all the confusion, I probably wouldn't know how to succeed any better a second time. Good and bad at same time, I was later told that I hadn't needed to go through the registration and other steps I took, that they can just be done without all that. How can one know that without instructions to the effect? At present, after receiving help, it is continuously on and plugged in, and it is supposedly downloading info daily when computer is not in use. I hope this is true! Again, someone who already had familiarity with such a device might happily attach it and see successes. I'm not in that position. And I don't know how to test to see if the daily backup is taking place. So, for those in similar positions to me in terms of experience, I'd say this might be a good device, but get good instructions prior to purchasing and depending on it. For those more savvy, perhaps it is a good buy without caveats. Including my sharing of all concerns and the ensuing recommendations, I'll state that I'd recommend this in hopes someone else can feel better prepared for success. But for those in my position, I might not actually recommend it.

Does not give much feedback as to what it is doing

The older version Passport used to show what documents it was currently backing up. Now I really don't know what it's doing, other than I have xteen thousand gigabytes to go in a tedious process, with no forecast for when it is going to be done. I have to memorize the shortcut computer file names of each of the three computers I am backing up. The backup process goes for several hours before it shows any real progress. No reminder to set the computer to not shut down in midstream. I am assuming the documents I wanted backed up were, in fact, backed up. I tried some of them, but I really can't tell if I am seeing the document currently ON MY COMPUTER, or the same one ON THE PASSPORT. All in all, a very confusing product with very little helpful information. The instruction manual is there, but it is really not clear what many of the references mean. I have an older WD passport that I do not feel is reliable anymore, that's why I got this one. But the old one did tell me what it was doing at any moment. The operating system has gone downhill. I think it's working, but I really won't know until I have a hard drive failure on one of my computers some day, and that's the reason for this machine.

    This Drive is SLOW

I have 5 WD hard drives and they are all My Book types. This is the first time I've ever bought a My Passport and it's very slow. I'm not here to say bad things about it because it does work but it's so very very slow in the backup phase of using it with my Mac. The My Book takes off and gets the job done fast but not with this unit. It can takes hours rather than an hour like the WD My Book. If you're looking for portability then this is it but be warned that it's very slow. I'm having other problems with it also. It seems to never finish it's back up but the back up shows to have been completed. I've never had a problem with My Book or Elements.

While this external hard drive probably does what it is supposed to do (back-up files in case you need to retrieve them) it is surprisingly difficult to figure out. Inside the box, the only "directions" was a tiny slip of paper with a website. Even at the website there seemed to be an assumption that the user already knows what to do. No "getting started" or tips ... After using the backup function to copy some files off my dying computer, I tried to restore the files on my new replacement PC, only to find out it seems to only want to restore the files to the same PC they came from (?)

    Works Slick, but Install Cumbersome

Once you get past the cumbersome install, the Back up works slick and only backs up what's changed. There was no Quick Install Guide included as advertised (unless it was one line in the Readme file on the disk). The WD Discovery.exe installed apps and utilities, but not the Back Up function, which is the main ingredient. Found a button on the Apps tab to download this function as a separate step. It didn't install the Security function either, but I skipped that feature. Info about basic functions were buried and scattered throughout the online FAQ's. All this was time consuming.

I bought this external hard drive with the intention of making a copy of everything on my USB flash drive in case it ever gets lost then will have a back up. I plugged it into my computer and it would not let me immediately transfer all of my files from flash drive to external hard drive. I'm going to have to make a copy of everything on my computer first and then transfer over the the external hard drive, which was a step I was hoping to avoid. It probably works great for other purposes, just not the one I wanted.

Bought this to move data from an old XP desktop to a new Win10 laptop. Purchased in spite of a warning about the possible need to reformat, computer migration was critical, and other manufacturers drives were not available. The data needed to be moved ASAP. Built-in install didn't work on XP., I had to manually intercede and reformat the drive. Really don't see the need for the limiting startup. Simple formatted drive would allow direct use by any windows computer with a USB. It worked fine after reformat.

Not compatible with Blu-ray & TV converter

I bought this for a ViewTV AT163 Digital TV converter. For recording shows. And either playing back with same or LG's BP200 Internet enabled Blu-ray player. While both these units sense "something" is connected to their USB ports. Neither unit can utilize the hard drive. Despite the manufacture's claims to the contrary. I did connect this hard drive to a Win 10 laptop and it worked perfectly. And, I like the hard drive doesn't need a power supply. I'll find another use for this storage device.

I am trying to use this as an external backup drive for my laptop. The Geek Squad set it up when I made the purchase. After a few weeks I realized it wasn't functioning as my backup drive and causing other problems with my computer. A few days ago the Geek Squad worked on the problem virtually but there are still problems. The hardware seems to be okay but the software and Geek Squad work have been disappointing.

Not a huge fan of these drives as they are pretty slow and can only reach about 95MB/s. BUT they are cheap and can get a decent storage size for under $100. I tend to buy these when I need to transfer something last second and when im giving the drive to someone else. Otherwise I am all SSD these days.

Seeing as I'm not a techie I don't know if it is downloading my info. and I don't understand the jargon tech support answered my question. I do like that it is compact and easy to store in a drawer until I'm ready to use it. I have it programmed for once a week. So if it is downloading I'd give it a 5 but because I don't know if it's working I'll stay neutral with a 3.

I purchased the drive after having a Click Free drive for 4 years. I want to alternate between the two systems. The WD solid state drive didn't tell me that I use Windows 10 OS to do the backup. When it was going on, I couldn't tell it was running. I left it alone for several hours and then I was informed that it was done. I expected more, but I'm probably going to be happy from this point forward.

This external drive should only really be used on a windows computer. Attempted to mount and format this to be used as a time machine for Mac, that didn't go well and alot of trickery in terminal was required to get it to work. (This is the first time a "windows" external HDD has given me this much trouble). Highly recommend paying the extra $5-10 for the "mac" version of the drive.

I bought the My Passport external drive as a backup for my laptop. I was told it would collect the contents I wanted and then do an auto-update if something changed on my Laptop or at scheduled times. As of now I do not know how to get it to do updates of the backup. I created the 1st backup fine..no biggie. I don't think it is doing the auto-updated backups.

Initially had an issue for some strange reason with an Intel driver which caused my computer to repeatedly disconnect from mi internet access. Whether it was a WD issue or an Intel one, it didn't exist till i plugged this unit into my computer. Presently i am using only the backup software, none of the other programs that came in this package.

I thought using this external storage would be easy to use but I found it overwhelming and difficult to understand all the steps,I even googled it and also didn’t really understand, they can’t expect everyone to be computer savy to be able to use such a simple accessory.

Disappointed by the fact they didn't have directions on how to install and what to do. No idea what the purpose of the "Quick Guide", double-sided small piece of paper, was for. Didn't find anything there to help install. I eventually muddled my way through install and figuring out how to use. Need better documentation. Seems to do the job.

WD replaces harddrive, but if data recovery is needed on these drive that may have bad sectors, you must send to Dallas, TX or somewhere midwest. No local facilities to do diagnostics & recovery. I'm finding that it is not a good idea to use a single source for data backup. Flash drives seem to work better and are more durable.

We have other My Passports. They are easy to use, but two of the three we have stopped working suddenly. We were able to retrieve the data on the first one so we thought we did something wrong. The second one got fried somehow and we lost all the data. We've learned to have two sources to backup data on so if we loose it on one we still have it on another.

This hard drive does what it is supposed to, store. Unfortunately i was in a pinch and needed a quick replacement, so for $60 i had to buy it. It is great for storage however i use external drives for my performances and it just does not cut it. The search "lag" time affects workflow. So if you need basic storage it's great just not for everyday use!
