I purchased this device when I had my computer in at Best Buy to remove a malware problem and it was backed up by the Geek Squad, all information appears to be on the device. Only problem I can't figure out how to work the device and do another back up of my computer since no instructions for using device was included in the package. Inside box was a site to go to for instructions, but that lead to a 2 page info. stating it was easy to use, but still no instructions on how to use ? So I chatted with the geek squad on line and was told it would be better to bring the computer and the My Passport back into Best Buy to learn how to use the device, I have not had a chance to do that yet so it's hard to give a complete review on this device at this time. Everything seems to cost more money nowadays, and less help is supplied in the contains and the sites your referred to are usually hard to understand and/or of no help at all even when it states "easy fast set up instructions included" where are they ?? I only recommend this product because of the memory it's able to hold.

My wife's PC started the ever more frequent "Blue Screen Of Death" so we decided the right thing to do would be to ignore it and then be super disappointed when she lost everything... No... Wait.. That's I WOULD HAVE done...Instead, she decided to get a portable drive to back her stuff up. We went to BB and looked at the decent selection and found this little guy. It had pretty good ratings and was (as is most stuff we buy) on sale so we went with it. We got it home and unpackaged it, plugged it in and after a handful of minutes formatting, it was ready to go. She was able to move all of her important stuff to the drive. Transfer speed was decent and no files were lost, so yeah, it did what we expected it to do. I gave it 4 stars due to the little longer than expected format time compared with other portable drives we've used. In all, I would recommend it and would buy again since the price was right and the performance was as expected.

I have been purchasing so many items, it is hard to find where to start. I call Best Buy my favorite toy store because I have purchase several of almost everything in your store for my family and me, from TV's, electronics, automotive electronics, lap tops. computers, cameras, programs, components, accessories and I don't even have enough room to say all I have purchased. I am in Best but a couple times a week for years, because I enjoy the great service, and have always been happy with everything I have purchased. I know the store buy heart and even bring my friends and relative there to help them find what they need. As I said, it is my favorite place to shop or even just see what is new. Your Geek Squad technicians and sales people always have good advice and are very helpful. What more can I ask. I am 81 years old and enjoy doing things for my family and friends. Thanks for your good people and great products. Dave My latest purchases were a laptop and a 1 TBWD Passport back up hard drive (external), and some programs.

Able to use HD to backup both laptop and Desktop using Windows system backup. Windows does not backup files on SD so manually copy the drives I want to keep on Passport HD. Have a difficult time at first understanding how to use s/w came with product. Found some Youtube videos that explained how to use the s/w that is just for data backup not system backup. I am unable to keep the HD all the time connected to PC or laptop monitor goes black and the PC the monitor is not recognized if the HD is plugged in before the PC systems are booted up. Tried to contact support but they did not understand my question. I get enough value from the product w/o support and how I want/need to use it.

    Good for migration and backup

These devices are good for migration and backup. There are some caveats though. This device can have a password put on it, if you choose to do so and forget/lose the password then you will lose the data unless you jump through hoops and spend substantial money to get it back. On the otherside if your device is hit with a cryptovirus while this is locked it will not be able to access the drive as it shows up as a CD. So taking the good with the bad and depending on your needs these devices (Western Digital) can be fantastic or not a great fit.

Worked flawlessly for backing up Dish Hopper Shows

We purchased 2 of these external drives in preparation for backing up all recordings from 2 Dish Hoppers due to an equipment upgrade. There was plenty of storage to hold the amount of recordings from each Hopper. When the new equipment arrived the drives seamlessly integrated with the new Hopper and the recordings did not have to be transferred back to the Hopper to watch. One note is that the speed of these drives is not as I would have expected. Transferring data to the drive took a considerable amount of time and the drive became hot to the touch several times. Admittedly, there was a lot of data being transferred at one time but I would have expected these drives to keep up with the transfer and not get bogged down.

Competitively priced. Purchased two of these drives and configured in a RAID 1 set with Microsoft Storage Spaces Windows 8.1, then Windows 10. WD software does not run when configured in a Windows software RAID set. WD needs to update their software in order for their software to run when configured in a Windows RAID configuration. My career has been in disk storage hardware, software and marketing. I would have ensured that my company's disk products would have worked in RAID configurations. I would have thought that the disk drive manufacturer would have known to write their software so that it would function when their drives are configured in Windows RAID configurations.

This WD Passport USB drive is small and easily portable. No problems with using it on my Windows 10 PC. HOWEVER, if you are buying it to backup your system, look elsewhere for the software. The WD software included with the drive is literally PATHETIC. I got it installed but I could not get it to run a backup, whether manually or by schedule. In searching for a solution, I found many others have the same problem. So, if you are just copying your files and pasting to the drive to have a backup, NO problems. IF you want software to do it for you, look elsewhere for a 3rd party software or use the Windows backups available.

The only complaint I have about this purchase is the relative lack of documentation that came with it. It "looked like" a plug-and-play device - and it is - but when I plugged it into my laptop that wasn't obvious from the onscreen instructions. So I had to call the Geek Squad to confirm. Other than that, I am very happy. Its 1T capacity is all I will ever need, and the price is quite reasonable. Very easy to set up and use. I especially like that it runs in the background without disturbing or slowing what I may be doing, so I set my backups for noon daily. That way I don't have to keep my laptop on during off hours.

Bought to backup a failing laptop drive but partitioned it to work with two computers. Old laptop had only a USB 2.0 port but drive worked fine (but slow as expected) even using the USB 3 cable supplied. I have not had the opportunity to try the backup software supplied with the drive yet. I would suggest anyone planning to partition the drive as I did, become more familiar with that procedure so as not to compromise the integrity of the software provided. I do not leave my drive connected all the time but I still get update messages on bootup. That is somewhat annoying and I have not figured out how to over ride that option.

I bought this to back up my current computer and an old Windows XP computer that I want to get rid of (which has USB 2.0). Before buying it, I read reviews and questions and answers and it stated that this portable drive was backward compatible. But after trying numerous times to connect to all of my USB ports, I was unsuccessful. It would not recognize the external hard drive. I even had a friend who works on computers try and he was unsuccessful as well. It works great with my current computer which is running Windows 10 and USB 3.0. It's a good product, but just be careful if you are trying to back up older computers.

While on business travel I needed an external backup drive on short notice and on a budget. After comparing what was on the shelf at the local Best Buy I choose this one. The laptop I used this drive with did not have a USB 3.0 port so I can't speak to the maximum transfer speeds, but it certainly wasn't any slower than my old drive. As for use goes, it's mostly plug and play. I did not like having to install an additional app on my laptop to enable password protection on the drive which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars. Despite that, I think it's still a good buy for the price and pretty easy to use.

I bought this drive for my wife as a quick single-cable solution for her Time Machine backup needs on her MacBook Pro. WD portable drives are religiously reliable and this one has been no different. I own two of its predecessors myself and the price/GB/Quality is a good ratio. I'd like to see more SSD offerings from WD in this space for faster backup and larger replacements for Thumb Drives but I hope they stick with the Micro USB 3.0 interface and begin to offer cables for USB-A and USB-C applications. That will be useful for the future but for now this is a good drive that does what it needs to do quickly.

While I like the WD Passport for its slender build and high-capacity (1TB in my case), I have found it to have issues at times with the Windows 10 platform, receiving error messages on several occasions that the Passport had needed to be scanned and fixed. Considering that I have had more experience with Windows-based problems since 1997, I'll try to give Western Digital the benefit of a doubt and look further into any communications glitches between it and Windows 10.

Originally, this was going to be my travel drive due to its cool color and modern look. However, I found that the rounded corners of the WD Elements drive (which I bought the same day) make that the more portable option. So, this drive stays home, very capably replacing an old WD My Book I used as a backup drive. It was so easy to connect, and I started transferring my files in minutes (I did not use the included software). I'm happy with the drive overall, and will buy more if WD makes them with rounded corners!

Only gave this 4 stars because I find it slightly non user friendly. The interface seems a little clunky, however the drive does the job. Once I got it set up there are no issues. I backed up an older computer prior to buying a new one. This gave me the security in knowing I wouldn't lose anything. Once I plugged into the new computer I found all my files that I had manually dragged and dropped from the old one. Didn't lose a thing. Worth your money. Buy this, you will probably have no interface issues (I can be a bit of a Luddite so it's probably me not the software).

Needed a faster portable hard drive with usb 3.0 data speeds. Usb 2.0 no longer was an option because of big files. The hard drive is easy to use. I use it for my xbox one s and ps4 for files only. Xbox and PS need to format the drive in order to store games. PS4 still uses the FAT32 format and does not read NTFS. XBOX supports NFTS but does not allow you to partition part of the drive. You have to format the whole drive which sucks. PS4 is probably the same with formatting the whole drive but have not tried since i don't want to use FAT32.

If I'm being totally honest, I got home and plugged this hard drive into my macbook pro, and it was "read-only" -- Not too alarming, since I had heard that I needed to reformat it first. The only problem was that I couldn't reformat it on my mac. After doing some research, this is a common problem amongst all brands of external hard drives (sometimes they just glitch when trying to reformat). I then thought to reformat it on a PC, and that worked. So now it is usable and seems to be as good as a hard drive can be. Just frustrating/nerve-wracking at first.

I have several WD Passport and Elements drives and they've all been reliable. This new version works well but as for the design of the case.... How did they ever think this looked good enough to put into production? The rounded corners of the older models and the uniform, smooth surfaces are far superior (in my opinion, at least) to the case on this drive. It also looks as though it's designed to open in the middle and the overall look is, for lack of a better word, discordant. But, it does what it's supposed to do and I guess that's all that really matters.

The thing I like about this product is that it's small and portable. You can take it anywhere and even put it in your pocket if you need to. I've been able to back up my Apple computer and instead of getting what seemed to be every day emails asking me if I want to pay .99 for extra storage I'm no longer getting those thanks to this device. I would recommend it to anyone who has a computer that doesn't require a ton of information to be stored (which is me) and likes small, convenient and portable devices.
